    5 out of 5 stars Nicely done..........2002-04-26

I gave this to my wife as a gift before our recent trip to New Orleans, and she carried this book everywhere. While any book like this is a bit out-of-date as soon as it is published, it was still very useful for finding all the sites and giving us good background information. One important note though is that Anne Rice is selling off her doll collection and the orphanage, so there is no longer any tour. That was really a disappointment.

5 out of 5 stars Perfect for the specialist.......2002-01-14

If you're going to New Orleans largely because you're a fan of Anne Rice's Vampire and Mayfair Witches novels, then this is an essential.

I used it on my first trip to New Orleans. It includes self-guided tours of the French Quarter and Garden District that include Vampire Chronicle and Mayfair sites respectively without leaving out the must-see unrelated sites and experiences. The only caveat is that zoo fans should be aware that the Audobon is one of the best in the country.

Three types of sites are covered - those related to Anne Rice herself, those used in - or speculated to have inspired locations in - the books, and those where parts of "Interview" were filmed.

With chapters on guided plantation, swamp and cemetary tours, as well as restaurants and hotels (the last including descriptions of ambviance that helped me considerably in my choice of hotel), you'll have everything you need to plan your trip and not miss anything like the Ursuline convent where Louis found Claudia and the Gardiner House that inspired the home that Lestat, Louis and Claudia shared.

Best of all, Ms. Dickinson wants us all to be careful out there in a city that can become ominous if you go too far off the beaten track sans tour group - especially at night. As she wittily reminds us, we're not all as indestructable as Lestat, and if an area - even one that contains an Anne Rice site - is unsafe, she doesn't hesitate to tell us so. Following her advice, you'll see everything you want to see and get home safe and sound.

Last year, for Christmas 97 we had to go to New Orleans to see my father's family, I was having a a horrible time because of the weather. (We went the year before for Mardi Gras, the weather makes my hair go afro-y; it doesn't help to use your normal hair-care products.) We went to the French Quarter the day we were leaving and pow there was this cool book. I had to get it, I've read all of the Mayfair Witches books. I recommend it to anyone that's ever wondered about where their favorite characters lived.

I saw this book in the bookstore and it's really interesteng. So mesmerizing that I couldn't put it down (thus being late to work). I realized just how much I had missed on my first visit to New Orleans. I plan on going again in Spring and I'm taking this book as a guide of sorts. Full of many great odditites of New Orleans.

3 out of 5 stars Seattle Utopia Exchange.......1998-11-26

This book is the author's elaborate BUSINESS PLAN (he says so himself on page 22 & 23) for building a facility to trade forward contracts and options based upon the nursery (trees) industry . The Seattle Mercantile Exchange, in other words, DOES NOT EXIST. The book is simply a 20% business plan, 80% primer on the workings of futures & options, too.

With the changes in the industry, I supposed the CFTC somehow approved The Seattle Merc, but it was not to be. After numerous calls to the Oregon and Washington State nursery associations, the CFTC, NFA, etc., nobody has ever heard of the SME. I finally reached someone who knew Capasso personally, who affirmed the non-existence of the SME.

Now, mind you, the entire book is written in the present tense, as though the exchange is underway currently. In fact, the book's inside flap description and marketing material will lead one to believe that the SME is in operation. This is entirely NOT THE CASE. In fact, the last word about the material development of the exchange is from Capasso. He had made investments into "development cost" for $250,000 to the SME and a grower who committed $4 million of "inventory" to the exchange. But nothing came about from it. Capasso claims "Even though all new ventures have start-up costs, the idea of an exchange for an industry that was conservative in its thinking and that approached change reluctantly was a risky venture, to say the least."

The rest of the book is textbook step-by-step on his business plan operating the exchange, including a contract example, clearing and settlement procedures, and a quote terminal.

So, in the end, what you have for the nursery profession is the Seattle Utopia Exchange. This does not detract from the books value. John Wiley & Sons brings out some consisently high-grade finance books, and this one is perfect for the futures' industry economic value.

The book's main value is spiritual food for professionals and entrepreneurs who desire to offset market risk in their business transactions. Capasso's clear writing, and concreate outline of the Exchange development, is a first step towards demystifying this part of finance. Even though with the dissapointing fact that I was mislead by the marketing of this book, it was worth it to see just how easy it is to create a futures exchange for just about anything :)

This book was loaned to me recently and WOW! was I impressed. As a motivational speaker and entrepreneur I've encountered and taught piecemeal most, if not all, the "secrets". Here they all are in one package in STORY form. Some of us learn better by illustration and this certainly provides that opportunity. What a fabulous experience!

I found this to be an entertaining story, which shows that there are opportunities in every situation if we only know where to look and how to take advantage of them. This book is an "easy read" and I would think young people, in particular, would benefit from it.

5 out of 5 stars An Absolute Find!.......2007-04-27

I recently bought Melody Crust's book after having bought what I thought was a book on applique and having been extremely disappointed and upset. If you wanted a book on brightly colorful quilts that would have been it, but Melody's book was what I was really looking for. If you are looking for a book on embellishing small quilts and wall hangings this is the book for you. It is bright, colorful, and chock full of ideas and techniques for creating and embellishing the quilts. While you could copy some of her creations she encourages you to create your own, and you can. If you have some small amount of sewing skills or none at all you can sew small pieces on your own. No machine is really necessary, though you might want to have an iron on hand. You don't need that much skill to sew beads to fabric, and any block can be hand sewn with just a running stitch. Most of your creations will never see the inside of a washing machine as they are for display only and won't need it. You don't even need to buy fabric if you have some old clothing you can wash, iron and cut into sheets for your squares, any fabric will do. If you just want some small pieces of handwork to do while you think or to teach yourself this is the book for you. The price you pay for the book is well worth it if you are looking for that one applique and embellishment book to spark your creativity.

Each individual chapter includes an 'Idea Gallery' of unique quilt toppings. "Quilt Toppings"is a welcome and enthusiastically recommended addition to instructional quilting reference collections for the novice needlecrafter and has a great deal to offer even the more experienced quilt maker.

This is a very quick and enjoyable read. It is clear almost to the point of being textbook, but with a humor that makes it fun rather than dry. Each spice gets a chapter. Infomation on each spice includes history and legend, current medicinal uses, crafts and household uses, as well as other interesting factual tidbits about the spices such as the coffe rituals of Arab cultures. And, of course, there are recipes that you can nearly taste as you read them. I checked this out of the library and now I am buying it for my own reference collection of cookbooks. It would be a great gift for anyone who cooks (or wants to learn).

You can tell that Maggie Stuckey is both a gardener and a cook. And, while the recipes, of which there are 200 for the 30 Spices listed, are enticing, it is her sense of history that I thoroughly enjoyed. Written concisely and clearly, her storytelling takes us back to the the lands and people who first enjoyed these spices.  We came across this book while looking for information on Cardamom and were hooked by the time we reached the entry for Elettaria Cardamomum. The spices ,and the recipes for those spices, included in this book are: Allspice, Anise, Caraway, Cayenne and Chili Peppers, Cinnamon, Cloves,  Coriander, Cumin, Dill Seeds, Fennel, Fenugreek, Ginger, Horseradish, Juniper Berries, Mace, Mustard Seeds, Nutmeg, Paprika, Pepper, Poppy Seeds, Saffron, Sesame Seeds, Star Anise, Tumeric, Vanilla. Also, conveniently included are the recipes for Curry Powder and Five-Spice Powder.

I just really don't get the point of this book. I love curry and I have many curry cookbooks that contain loads of info on the history of curry and the spice trail etc. (try Madhur Jaffrey's Curries and Kabobs). This book basically feels like fodder - full of useless trivia and a very bad recipe or two. I am dropping mine in the local book exchange, and not even taking one in exchange because it wouldn't be fair! (I only gave it 1 star just to write the review)

            5 out of 5 stars I loved this book!.......1997-10-27

Even though I am an experienced herb grower, I very much enjoyed this book because it had so many new and fun ideas. The chapter on homemade cosmetics was probably my favorite. I have made the "Gardener's Hand Salve", "Lavender Cologne" and the "Bath Oil". They all were great! I gave them away as gifts too. Be sure to try the Chocolate Mint Pudding recipe too. It is to die for!!

                  Book Description

For the first time, Basic Montessori opens the celebrated philosophy and method to a more general public. David Gettman has devised a clear and modern explanation of Montessori's revolutionary ideas about early intellectual development, and provides a step-by-step guide to the Montessori learning activities most commonly used with under-fives. These include activities for introducing reading and writing, counting and decimal concepts, science, and geography, as well as activities that help develop the child's practical and sensorial skills.

5 out of 5 stars The most accessible book on Montessori ever.......2006-08-01

'Basic Montessori' is one of the most popular renditions of Maria Montessori's philosophy and method, and it has been for nearly 20 years. This is because the author, David Gettman -- who attended the official AMI Montessori course, has a honours degree in philosophy, and is also an accomplished author and publisher in his own right -- has done the education world and parents a great favor by rendering Maria's early-1900s pedagogical language (similar in style, for example, to Henri Bergson) in modern, accessible, common-sense terms. This accessibility disturbs narrow-minded obsessives like A C Crook (see review below) who wish to keep Maria Montessori's actual thinking closeted away from the general public, so that only a chosen few are 'qualified' to dispense it. But the many thousands of educators and parents who over the years have read 'Basic Montessori' have deeply appreciated being given this access and insight, so that they too can benefit from Maria's wonderful approach to early childhood education. Long may Montessori's ideas be open and available to all!

5 out of 5 stars No Montessori home should be without it!.......2002-03-31

This book has been the clearest and most concise version of the Montessori method I have found yet. The introduction is excellent and seems to cover all the history of Maria Montessori and her philosophy without confusing issues or making it over complex. It gave me a real feeling of being able to implement her ideas in my home without having to hugely change the way my daughters lived. I found the descriptions of the materials and how to present them excellent; simple, as the presentations should be, ordered, so I knew what I should tackle next and with lots of varieties, so I could make good use of the materials I made or bought. I found a lot of confidence from this book - partly in my parenting techniques and partly in my ability to take to the do-it-yourself stores and make my own materials using his descriptions! If you are going to have one Montessori book - have this one!

2 out of 5 stars Very informative, but will never use.......2001-12-21

Yes, OK, Montessori is a great way for children to learn with play. Yes, many children can benefit greatly from this method. Yes, this book explictly lays out guidlines for this method, and includes lots of activities for preschoolers to do. BUT, even as a stay-at-home mom, I cannot imagine doing more than two or three of these activities at home. WAY too complex and involved. If you are a teacher, this book is for you. If you are a mom looking for educational activities to do with your children, look elsewhere. I was very excited about recieving this book, but it just didn't cut it for me. I don't have a sand table at home, and I don't have time to read this whole book (which is surprisingly substantial). Can't I just do flash cards or some fun crafts instead?

5 out of 5 stars Recommended Montessori Reading.......1999-07-19

This book gives a nice overview of the Montessori method and how it is used to teach small children. I am a Montessori teacher and parent, so I have looked at the book from both perspectives. I find the information very useful and current.

This is a surpisingly objective account in places, but it's interesting to see how the author, a qualified counsellour, often reverts back to a childhood linguistic mode when describing her early experiences. She's conscious of the effect that living in an orpanage has on the way she percieves the world as a whole. At times it feels like the book is written by 2 different authours, one a badly scarred orpanage vitim, the other an impartial commentator.

it works, though, it's often harrowing and should be enough to make anyone who perpetuated the institionalised cruelty of these institiutions feel ashamed. It's an angry, but not necessacarily bitter book that deserves a wide audience in Ireland and elsewhere.
