Description:
We examined denitrifying bacteria from wet soils and creek sediment in an agroecosystem in Oregon, USA that received inputs of nitrogen (N) fertilizer. Our objective was to determine the variation in denitrifying community composition and activities across three adjacent habitats: a fertilized agricultural field planted to perennial ryegrass, a naturally vegetated riparian area, and creek sediment. Using C"2H"2 inhibition, denitrifying enzyme and N"2O-reductase activities were determined in short-term incubations of anaerobic slurries. A key gene in the denitrification pathway, N"2O reductase (nosZ), served as a marker for denitrifiers. Mean denitrifying enzyme activity (DEA) was similar among habitats, ranging from 0.5 to 1.8@mgNg^-^1 dry soilh^-^1. However, the ratio of N"2O production, without C"2H"2, to DEA was substantially higher in riparian soil (0.64+/-0.02; mean+/-standard error, n=12) than in agricultural soil (0.19+/-0.02) or creek sediment (0.32+/-0.03). Mean N"2O-reductase activity ranged from 0.5 to 3.2@mgNg^-^1 dry soilh^-^1, with greater activity in agricultural soil than in riparian soil. Denitrifying community composition differed significantly among habitats based on nosZ terminal-restriction fragment length polymorphisms. The creek sediment community was unique. Communities in the agricultural and riparian soil were more closely related but distinct. A number of unique nosZ genotypes were detected in creek sediment. Sequences of nosZ obtained from riparian soil were closely related to nosZ from Bradyrhizobium japonicum. Although nosZ distribution and N"2O-reductase activity differed among habitats, relationships between activity and community composition appeared uncoupled across the agroecosystem.

Many unique books can be made by building on just two basic structures, the Eastern-based accordion fold and the Western-developed codex (the kind with sewn pages). Artist and bookbinder Sue Doggett explains both methods in detail, supporting the step-by-step instructions with colored diagrams. The book stresses process over product; the 10 projects in the final chapter are as fully explained as the techniques and variations in the first six chapters, but the scope of the project section is far more limited and the photos of finished products less numerous than in some other titles. Newcomers or those with less time will find more immediate satisfaction with a choice like Marie Browning's Handcrafted Journals, Albums, Scrapbooks & More. But for those interested in an in-depth lesson on high-quality creations, this is an excellent guide to the subject. --Amy Handy

An excellent resource for beginners on up!.......2007-01-03
This book was the first I ever purchased to learn the art of bookmaking, and after finishing several projects from the book and a course on bookmaking, I still refer to it for help sometimes.
It has a comprehensive section on tools, including which tools you really need versus those which are just nice to have. There is also a lovely section on paper.
The book gives detailed instructions on a lot of different projects which encompass many different types of books, as well as truly inspirational gallery sections. Even friends who aren't into "making stuff" have oohed and awed over the art books inside. This book is great to follow a specific project (or follow any of the variations suggested) or to thumb through and get ideas - and you will have many after looking at it. It's great for those who have a hard time doing long projects too - there are lovely folded books which can be completed in an afternoon, and projects requiring a minimum of materials. I love reading the history behind some of the forms, as well as how the author incorporates found objects into her books.
I have a lot of craft books, and this is definitely one of my favorites, and one of the best-used.
An excellent reference book.......2005-03-30
This book is my favourite in my collection of books on the subject. (And I have quite a few!) In each chapter, different techniques for book binding are explored, e.g.- sewing over tapes, accordian folding, etc. Each section also contains a photo gallery of books that the author and other artists have created using particular techniques discussed in the chapter. This set out means that the book is a great reference guide and is also a fantastic source of inspiration for creating your own original designs. Bookworks is also great for beginners as it finishes with a comprehensive 'project' section explaining how some of the author's works were created.

Ordinarily, I don't buy books that show specific projects and then give instructions. However, this book features truly unique and inspiring ideas for wonderful art/books. For example, star-shaped books (looking from above, not pages cut out in star shapes), books with three-dimensional pages (like classic Italian stage design), and books using innovative approaches, not just "pop up" stuff. If you choose rubber stamps that are "NOT cute," then you'll like this book. No, it doesn't have anything to do with rubber stamping, per se, but I'm making a point: Real artists will love this book. Within hours of just browsing through this book, I had already set up a major bookmaking project that is tremendous fun, and more personally expressive than most paperart projects I do. If you don't buy this book, please get your library to order it. This is a must-read if you're interested in paper and art.

In addition to beautiful photography, there are clear step-by-step directions for making many different kinds of books. The directions are easy to follow, with large illustrations of exact steps.
There is enough variety included to interest an experienced craftsperson, but presented in such a way that a beginner is not overwhelmed.

This is a wonderful bookbinding book. The projects here range in skill level from beginning to advanced. Step-by-step instructions accompanied by color illustrations guide you seamlessly through techniques & projects.
I like how the techniques, such as folding types, pamphlet sewing, multisection sewing, attaching covers & making containers to place the books in are taught before going on to the projects.
My favorite book is actually four books assembled with Japanese style stitches & encased in a wraparound box. It is really nice that it shows you how to rebind your favorite books as well. I have not seen this covered in other books.
I love two-page gallery sections that follow each book type. They are very inspiring. The supplier's list & bibliography are nice bonuses. With lots of fresh ideas, this book makes a great gift for yourself or a friend.

Best beginning gardener's book........1998-01-19
I was very disappointed to find that this book is no longer in print. It is by far the best book I have found for the beginning gardener. It's descriptions and colors for planning a garden and/or finding a type of flower, plant, or shrub are wonderful. It is a very easy book to follow in searching for what you are looking for.

All parents and teachers of young children should read this guide to dealing with discipline issues. There are many different examples of ways to deal with common parenting dilemmas, so there is bound to be one that fits your situation. The author gives the reader a set of tools designed to build healthy, happy, secure children. Follow her instructions and you will be happier, too.

Self centered and biased.......2006-10-21
Stewart does give a number of experiences in shocking & vivid detail, but I was hoping for more time spent on the experiences of the people in Africa, opposed to HIS experience of Africa and five entire chapters on his own experience of being shot.
The horrible experiences of the people he sees deserve much more attention than a decadent (an example on page 159) Western reporter who meets an unfortunate experience. On top of this he brings slanted and self-admitted ignorant views on Africa ("The more I discovered, the more I grew angry and disgusted at Africa's recent colonial experience, but I still knew little about African history" page 35).
Stewart makes a few blanket accusations against the West for all that is wrong in Africa ("Europe demonstrated to Africa that self-serving greed outweighed all else" page 129) with no mention to the equally ruthless Arab slave traders who oppressed Africa before the white man. The book makes Stewart seem more self centered than compassionate. His criticism of the west is best re-directed to his own book: "the West's luxury and comfort comes before the human rights of African citizens" page 130.
A good introduction to life in the war zone.......2004-12-01
Ian Stewart's "Ambushed" is a commendable book worthy of use as a introduction to life behind the lines, however it falls short of the actual horrors of war. Stewart's writing is linear, easy to read, and palatable for most readers and the stories he has to tell are courageous. However I am a bit reticent to give his book four or five stars because he, albeit probably unintentionally, doesnt portray the soul-crushing horrors of war as they really are. Having worked and witnessed the atrocities in Sierra Leone, the DRC, and Cambodia myself I sympathize with Ian but I can assure you his book is a trip to Disneyland compared to the actualities of the situation in these war torn countries. I'm glad that his book brings light to the Sierra Leone situation (which fortunatly is being extinguished) to the public. If one wants a more to real life of todays modern and barbaric wars I suggest reading Jon Steele's "War Junkie". This horribly named book was written by an ITN news photographer but he should have been a journalist. Jon has covered twice as many wars as Ian(not that this is a comparision) however no book has ever given me nightmares or brought more emotion to what really happens behind the lines as his book has. Read it with caution, I can still smell the stench of Rwanda's murdered...
The true story.......2003-12-02
In this book you get the information you will not see on any TV station. You recieve first hand the experience of a war reporter. The author is very good about telling you the situation before he travels to his destination. He doesn't hold anything back. He makes the story come alive with his descriptions.
My favorite part of the book was his recovery period. He had to work so hard to find out who he truly was and what he had to overcome was amazing. It opened my eyes to the dangers that reporters face to bring us the news.

I read Freetown Ambush published by Penguin Canada. If this is the American version of the same book, I highly recommend it.
Stewart's description of Ivory Coast and the disintegration of a society is compelling and the descriptions of the inside workings of the AP is very interesting. The touching story of his recovery is short and sweet. His writing style keeps moving and he explains the confusing situation in West Africa very well.

When I first picked up Ian Stewart's "Ambushed: A War Reporter's Life on the Line" I had some trepidation. I worried I would finish it with the same feeling I had when I read "All the President's Men." I enjoyed that book, but I had a feeling it was only really compelling to people interested in history, politics or journalism. Not that those topics are boring - they just don't always have much heart or soul.
With Stewart's book, I was pleasantly suprised. Although a good portion of the book focuses on the political climates he faced as a war correspondent, it also gets to the heart of how war affected people in the places he covered. With relative grace, Stewart manages to balance the bare-bones reality of war with the personal struggles he had covering it as the Associated Press' West Africa bureau chief. He brings real emotion to the book by describing both fighting in the streets and the reactions of children who see it every day.
But the real heart of the story is apparent in the final third of the book, after Stewart has been shot in the head by rebels in Sierra Leone. As he describes the rehabilitation process following his injury it becomes more and more evident what war reporters really face. It's really compelling to analyze, along with Stewart, why those journalists do what they do and whether it is worth the sacrifice.
In the simplest terms, the book is interesting because it tells one person's story in a way that most people, not just journalists or history and politics buffs, can relate to. By showing how Stewart covered war and how he dealt with it personally, "Ambushed" opens a window into war that most of us will never get to experience first-hand.
