        Book Description

This updated second edition features new information on Governor's and Ellis Islands. Experience a New York City most tourists, and even most natives, never see. Within the city's boundaries are dozens of islands—some famous, like Ellis, some infamous, like Rikers, and others forgotten, like North Brother. While the spotlight often falls on the museums, trends, and restaurants of Manhattan, the city's "other" islands, each with its own personality, offer the day-tripper everything from nature trails to military garrisons to sailing excursions. This detailed guide and comprehensive history to forty islands tells their colorful, often lurid stories, and will give you a sense of how New York City's politics, population, and landscape have evolved over the last three and a half centuries. Full of offbeat stories and little-known facts and legends, this is much more than a travel guide. 22 black & white photographs, 10 maps, index.

5 out of 5 stars A must read before a water tour of NYC.......2005-11-21

Whenever we take guests on a cruise around NYC I am the designated tour guide who points out all the sights. People are always amazed by all the little known stories about the history of the city as viewed from the water that I can relate to them. Many of them I gleaned from this wonderful book. After you read this book, a ferry or circle line ride will be a totally new experience.

5 out of 5 stars Author's response to misleading review.......2003-10-31

NOTE: This is not a review. We are the book's authors and are writing in response to the careless and misleading comments made by reviewer "erikbaard."

"erikbaard" seems to think we should have written a narrowly focused book catering to his personal interest as a kayaker, describing such minutiae as seagull eggs. But our book is intended as a history and guide book, an approach we believed would entertain, intrigue and inform a far broader audience. So while we did detail the natural beauty-from the garnet and feldspar on Twin Islands to the towering hickory trees of Hunter Island--we gave far greater focus to the tales of colorful people (Nellie Bly and Mae West) and momentous events (the General Slocum fire and the building of the Statue of Liberty) as well as the marvelous attractions that those islands accessible to the public hold.

"erikbaard" also attacks us for a "self-congratulatory" tone because we dubbed a handful of islands as being "forgotten." How can they be forgotten, he asks, if he and other kayakers know of them. While kayaking is growing in popularity in New York, it's a safe bet that a small percentage of the 7 million New Yorkers are out there paddling. And having spoken with thousands of New Yorkers about the islands since this book was first published in 1996 we are equally certain that the vast majority of people coming to this book know little or nothing about most of these islands, even those that we didn't call "Forgotten"-islands like North Brother Island or Swinburne Island. We are not self-congratulatory, simply enthusiastic about sharing all we learned in our research.
(But "Erikbaard" is quite self-congratulatory, and mistakenly so. He boasts several times about visiting these islands in his kayak. However, many of these islands-including Swinburne Island, which he mentions-are part of the Harbor Heron Project and if he visits without permission he may be doing irreversible damage to an important bird refuge through his adventurism.)

In addition, he implies that we didn't visit the islands and instead relied on interviews with historians. He also criticizes our tone toward working class residents as condescending. We did visit the islands-we even watched them bury the dead in the Potter's Field on Hart Island and Sharon went into the jails at Rikers Island-and did several years worth of historical research but we also talked to ordinary citizens, residents of the islands or people whose lives were touched by them, like Adella Wotherspoon, the last survivor of the General Slocum disaster. And if you ask them-as we have-- they will say not that the tone is condescending but that we accurately captured life on their islands in a way that few other journalists ever have.

The reviewer also condemns us as squeamish and too liberal because we didn't mention islets-barely more than rocks, actually-that had the word Negro in them. In point of fact, those islets don't exist anymore and we make passing mention of just five of the many such islets that once existed there, picking just a few of the most colorful names like "Bald Headed Billy" and "Bread and Cheese." It seems that "erikbaard" brings this point up solely to glorify a short article he once wrote and to relive his glory days when he got to interview a city parks commissioner.

Then comes a blatant inaccuracy when the reviewer accuses us of ignoring Native Americans. In fact, they are mentioned throughout the book, where appropriate-however, the reality is that they rarely lived on these islands and used them only occasionally so there is minimal recorded history related to them. If he was not so intent on trashing our book, however, he would have noted our chapter on Bergen and Mill Islands that delves into the Canarsie Indians, the wampum they produced and how they defended themselves from the Mohawks and later traded with the settlers.

All in all, we were quite dismayed by the combative approach of this reviewer. If you are interested in a book on kayaking around New York, then maybe he will write one for you. In the meantime, if you want stories about Typhoid Mary, the invention of the hot dog at Coney Island, the inspiring presence of herons and egrets in New York, and the development of the tight-knit community of Broad Channel, then we hope you take some time to explore "The Other Islands of New York City."

5 out of 5 stars New York City Rediscovered!.......2002-11-15

As a native New Yorker, I heard of many islands that occupied the waters that surround the five boroughs of the city. As I flew back into LaGuardia and JFK airports I even began to notice them from above. Obtaining information about these islands was very difficult, even from local libraries, and therefore when I found this book at a local bookstore, I was delighted that someone came up with the idea of publishing such a book.

From Roosevelt Island to Cuban Ledge, the authors give a very thorough and well researched book on the many islands inhabiting the New York archipelago. Many islands which were once islands, but have long since been connected to the boroughs by artificial landfills are also covered here (e.g. Coney Island-Brooklyn, Hunter Island-Bronx, Battery Park area-Manhattan, etc..) are also covered here.

If you live in the city or plan on visiting, please make sure to pick up a copy of this guide, and make sure to visit the many hidden treasures found in this city.It makes an excellent companion book while aboard a plane or even in the subway.

Schwab's revolutionary approach to success in the face of adversity
Since its founding in 1973, Schwab has led the full-brokerage market by stressing customer service. Today, Schwab has established itself as a company with a unique identity: old-fashioned integrity meets technology-empowered financial services. Charles Schwab tells the compelling story of this organization's uncanny ability to reinvent itself around an unchanging set of core values. This book is organized into five sections, each representing a critical juncture for the company when it was forced to reinvent itself or be consumed. Along the way, Kador highlights Schwab's immutable laws, direct from the Chairman and CEO: 1) Create a cause, not a business; 2) the corporate vision is only as good as the values of its culture; 3) welcome upheaval. In the whirlwind economic environment we currently face, Charles Schwab provides readers with valuable lessons on how businesses can survive and thrive in any situation.

          5 out of 5 stars Ex-Schwab Employee - Like a Walk Down Memory Lane........2004-09-15

As an ex-Schwab employee (1991-2000), I recommend the book highly. Having firsthand knowledge of the people and many of the events that were reported in the book I found the historical portions of the book to be accurate.

John Kador has done an excellent job of capturing the history, heroic vision and ethics of Schwab (both Chuck and the company) and how the company revolutionized the discount brokerage industry and the distribution of mutual funds. Also, I thought his comments and perspectives into the many challenges the company overcame, and current hurdles to overcome, were incredibly insightful.

John writes in a narrative style that reads more like a fiction novel than what one might expect for a "business book". As I said, I'm an ex-employee and still found it to be a page-turner. I couldn't wait to read what else John had accurately captured about Schwab's long history. I have recommended the book to all of the Schwab employees and ex-employees I keep in touch with.

The book was written prior to the most recent re-emergence of Chuck Schwab as sole CEO of the company, so much has changed since the book was finished, but I still believe it is a great read for anyone who is interested in the history of one of the few revolutionary Fortune 500 companies.

This one is worth buying. You won't regret it!

4 out of 5 stars Good book about a great subject.......2003-02-26

Schwab has redefined Wall Street. He and Bogle have been two lone voices calling for ethical treatment of the customer, and they actually have tried to practice what their preached. The is the first book about Schwab instead of by him, and it is worth reading.

One of Schwab's greatest strengths is adaptation, but that means that any book written about him and his company will quickly be out of date. In this case, it was written before the US Trust acquisition and before he gave up the co-CEO role. It was also written at the beginning of the long, painful downturn following the crash of the NASDAQ that has hurt Schwab as much as anyone.

I can't wait to read the sequel.

As an ex-Schwab employee (1988 - 1996) I really enjoyed reading this book. I worked for or with several of the folks interviewed and was at HQ in San Fran. the day after the earthquake--pretty incredible day! I have recommended it to all of my ex-Schwab buddies.

          4 out of 5 stars Insightful!.......2002-12-17

Business writer John Kador describes the evolution of Charles Schwab & Company, a former discount brokerage blessed with the ability to transform itself through four different incarnations. Kador emphasizes Schwab's commitment to integrity and customer service, a code that enabled it to prevail despite upheavals and threats. While the book focuses on the company, the running portrait of Chuck Schwab gives it a personal core. Kador highlights Schwab's concern with exercising his values and leading a highly principled business amid an often shady industry he saw as corrupted by greed. Kador's engaging narrative style is designed to inform and entertain general investors, executives and managers. At times, the discussion of Chuck Schwab and his company sounds almost too laudatory, as if the book is an in-house publicity piece. We from getAbstract recommend that readers should take all that sugar with a grain of salt, given this otherwise compelling dish.

I love this book. It has tons of stuff in there that I've never even thought of doing. The instructions are clear enough, and the little illustrations are helpful. I just wish that the pictures at the beginning of the different sections were more clear. There's a picture of a number of skeins of yarn and the opposite page has a "key" to the opposing picture, telling you which yarn was made using what technique. It's a little confusing at times and I wish there were some more in depth pix. But other than that the info is great, and amazon has a great price! I'm not giving up my copy any time soon! =0)

Having gone to Nova Scotia for a spinning workshop in exotic and novelty spinning, this book was a wonderful find on my return home. Diane Varney clearly and consisely details how to create slub yarns, snarl yarns, fuzzy yarns, boucles, various cabled yarns. Using her techniques as a foundation, the possibilities become endless to apply these to any combination of fibers and embellishments to one's yarn creations. A definite plus to any spinner's library!

I have only been spinning for a short while, but I knew I wanted to explore beyond the basics, maybe get into making art yarns and the like...this book fits the bill perfectly, it assumes you know basic techniques and explains ways to move beyond....I am very pleased with this book!

This book is an excellent choice for anyone wishing to better understand how plants function and grow. The reading level and scientific information seem appropriate for those with a basic knowledge of science or gardening. What makes this book special is that it contains in-depth, useful information about plant form and function, plant needs and requirements, how to propagate plants, basic gardening info, pest and control practices, and an excellent guide to planning and maintaining landscape plants. I use this book as a textbook in my high school Plant Science course - the students enjoy the reading level,(the key vocabulary terms are displayed in bold print), the drawings and pictures, and the fact that this book is an excellent reference book that they can actually use outside of school. The copies we use have black and white illustrations and photos - if you're looking for pretty pictures for the suburban garden this is the wrong book - but if you love plants and wish to help your knowledge about plants grow and blossom this is the best book I've seen for the novice and pro alike.

I purchased this book because it received a Teacher's Choice Award from
Learning Magazine. I am impressed! It contains many ideas that can
be easily implemented into daily routines. In addition, there are
strategies for handling those more challenging situtations that some-
times occur in the classroom. Any beginning or veteran teacher should
                    benefit from the suggestions.

This book does have some useful ideas, and could be referred to in certain circumstances, but a lot of it is commmon sense, and it feels a little repetitive.

I was expecting well written chapters on management, with maybe an appendix at the end with specific incidences that could be refered to. Instead every page is on something different. It's organized in bullets and covers a lot throughout the book, but is not too helpful because it doesn't go in depth on any subject.

It's an okay book, but I don't think I got my money's worth.

                    Book Description

Why another book on Duchamp? Because of all the previous books on Duchamp. Arguably the most influential artist of the 20th century, Duchamp, the son of a successful notary, was also a shrewd manager of his image and interests--so much so that many of those who have written about him have been dazzled by his self-created persona when trying to assess his elusive legacy and equally elusive character. Marcel Duchamp: The Bachelor Stripped Bare is not the first full-length biography of Duchamp, but it is the first to present him in all his human contradictions and to take a refreshingly objective look at his real contribution to modern art. The well-known facts are beautifully explored here: Duchamp's myriad personal relations (with family, lovers, collectors, and artists ranging from Man Ray, Picabia, and Breton to the Stettheimer sisters and the Arensbergs); the creation of major works such as the "readymades" and the "Large Glass"; his passion for chess and presumed abandonment of painting. But beyond this, author Alice Goldfarb Marquis looks past the diffident, humorous mask that Duchamp wore with friend and acquaintance alike, to explore the passions and insecurities that motivated many of his artistic and personal evolutions. She separates the artist from the con artist, to determine just how profound an influence Duchamp has really been. Based on numerous unpublished sources and first-hand interviews, Marcel Duchamp: The Bachelor Stripped Bare stands as a groundbreaking contribution to the ever-burgeoning field of Duchamp studies.

If you believe in God, read the Calvin Tomkins bio instead. If you don't, read this one. If you're not sure, read 'em both.

I believe this is only the second book-length biography of the Dadaist, non-Dadaist (perhaps pre-post-Modernist) painter, artist, post-painter, icon and darling of many. Duchamp is a figure that inspires much talk of isms. He was embraced by the Surrealists, the Pop artists and experimental types during the Sixties, the Postmodernists of the Eighties, and a whole lot more since. By signing a urinal (or was it a toilet bowl?) he created much existentialist angst among the artistic classes. His legacy includes those who cart wheelbarrows full of junk into expensive gallery settings, as well as others almost as sauve as he was. He put his name on the map by throwing out the idea that art can only be made with materials bought in art stories, i.e. paints and clay. He for one preferred shopping in hardward stores. Was he a genius or a hoax? This is the question people like to debate. Certainly he was a humorist, and very ironical. Since his early disillusionment with the Art Establishment, he made much of the idea that the only thing left for art to do was shock. And he was very good at this. The superlative I'll add is that he inspired more thought about art than anyone else in the Twentieth Century. Painting will no longer be just "retinal" (or "painterly" as someone has translated this term).

If you enjoy this kind of back-and-forth, you will enjoy this book. Given he was a master ironist, it is fittingly ironical that he should get this more critical handling than usual, by Alice Goldfarb Marquis. Perhaps it's the sign of the times. In another even less kind book, Donald Kuspit blames him in part for ushing in the End of Art. (Surely rubbish, even if too much rubbish has indeed entered the so-called hallowed walls of art.)

You get the picture - if you want a fauning bio, this aint the one. But perhaps it's a necessary corrective after so much gushing. Marcel Duchamp once gave his own version of the dictum, "the only bad publicity is no publicity." By that measure, this volume, which is quite well researched, certainly adds to the MD stock. Ms. Marquis is as much about assessing the damage he has wrought on art as the things he has brought to it. Or to rephraze it from the point of view of a believer, of the damage others have wrought in his name. In one of the more shocking lines, she says that "the Avant-Garde has been marching to his beat ever since, as it marches off a cliff." Strong words, but perhaps this is a moment for art to take a new direction.

During his life Marcel Duchamp very much promoted the idea that there should be no single correct interpretation of his work, or any work. He saw the spectator as playing an important role in the creation of the art. And so it seems just to have this new biography, that veers from the traditional platitudes about the great man. While I don't necessarily subscribe to all the feminist interpretations now being circulated (Kuspit, Amelia Jones, Marquis) I nevertheless find it refreshing to hear this one. For instance: the Large Glass (his masterwork) is a temple to the female Christ...
