Customer Reviews:
I made money with this system, but BE CAREFUL.......2003-09-02
I purchased this book in the mid 1990s, and began trading commodities options with a small account (because I did not have enought capital to meet the margin requirements for trading the stock indexes). I traded crude oil short spreads exclusively, and made money consistently for several months. However, I ignored the money management rules to my peril. I did not close out positions that were in the money at expiration, thinking that I would simply buy the contracts to cover the options that were exercised. WRONG!!! The market went limit up for several days, and when I was finally able to get out, I had given back 10 months worth of profits. I was so shaken by the experience that I stopped trading for a long time. Although I agree with another reviewer that the text can be confusing, and Dr. Schiller does erroneously mix his terms, the underlying statistical model appears valid. I paper-traded the system based on historical and real-time data before committing money to it, and I actually used it profitably for some time. I would consider the book a useful addition to a trader's library, subject to the caveats mentioned.
No guarantees.......2003-01-02
A friend insisted he'd learned by reading this book how to safely and consistently generate sizeable sums of money by selling puts using the market indexes. In fact, he said I was stupid if I didn't do the same. That was when the S&P 500 was above 1000. Now he no longer wants to talk the market and registers only pain when I broach the subject. Even without reading the book, I have to question whether the title isn't misleading. Is it really insider's information? Is it really automatic? And is it really "extremely low risk'? (Unlike my friend, the author at least stops short of calling it "no risk.")
Grossly inaccurate.......2002-07-08
Which is worse, a NYC taxi driver (Wade Cook) giving oversimplified financial advise, or a PhD computer programmer writing on investments? The common denominator is that both present and overemphasize the "sure thing" concept.
Mr Schiller demonstrates why people with PhD in computer science should not write a book on investment. The intro itself is misleading with "no risk, short spread, protected straddle" in bold print in the same paragraph. Three shortcomings 1) terminology is absolutely WRONG; 2) understanding of "assignment" GROSSLY FLAWED; and 3) ignores margin requirements where some examples are not possible on a $50,000 account.
TERMINOLOGY: What he describes as a "short spread" is actually a short (or naked) straddle - selling a call above the market and a put below the market. By industry standard definition, a "spread" is selling AND buying a call (or put) on the same security at a different strike price. Ironically, what he describes as a "protected straddle" is actually 2 spreads - a call spread and a put spread straddling the market price. He then goes on to explain more complex positions while intermixing spread and straddle terminology.
ASSIGNMENT: On page 47, he notes that the LONG option in a protected straddle or butterfly spread are "in the money (by design) and subject to involuntary early assignment." He ignores the fact that the LONG position is further out than the SHORT position to create the net credit that he advocates. More important, long options are NEVER assigned, only short options are. Long options are EXERCISED at the instruction on the holder which starts the assignment process.
MARGIN. Too complex for this review, but totally ignored in the book. Some firms, like Schwab, have $50,000 min equity requirement for naked options on broad based indexes (like the OEX) That is net remaining after the higher of 3 other rules. His $50,000 account wouldn't support 1 contract, much less the total of 17 contracts on page 82. You can't trade yourself into a maintenance call!!!!
READER BEWARE!
A consistant step by step plan to earn a trading income.......1997-08-04
Not just theory and abstract ideas, this book states a specific trading plan that I have followed and profited from. The book compares 4 or 5 ideas to compare, but then tells the reader, this is the one to follow. It involves the selling (writing) of far out of the money OEX index options, short term. Performed as the author states, it is a consistant winner with controlled downside risk. Less than 200 pages and easy to read
Book Description
The Top Gun business model focuses on working with high net worth clientele.
In Top Gun Financial Sales, leading investment advisor D. Scott Kimball suggests that by dropping 80 percent of your clients and never taking on more than 50 clients financial salespeople can substantially increase their profits and production. Using the same principles taught to United States fighter pilots at Top Gun, Kimball created the Top Gun Sales Business Model. It is a model that accentuates the importance of working closely with a few high net worth individuals in lieu of trying to half heartedly serve thousands of smaller clients.
Customer Reviews:
Don't Waste Your Time or Your Money.......2003-11-25
This is a re-hash of the author's previous book. Trust me, if you've been in the business longer than a year, you've heard all of this before. In this case, the revolutionary idea is "having a small number of very affluent clients." Wow! What a novel idea!!! The title of the book should be 'How to Make A Bunch of Money Off Poor Schmucks Trying to Make a Bunch of Money.' A much better book is Duncan MacPherson's 'The Promise of The Future.' http://www.paretosystems.com/index.html is the web address. This guy should be ashamed.
Some Ideas Unrealistic, But Sharpens Your Focus - Good Read.......2003-11-10
I have been in the financial services industry for almost 16 years, and have seen and read just about everything out there. I came upon Kimball's book after reading an excerpt in one of the industry's trade publications. It piqued my interest, so I went for the book.
Going after only those clients who would yield commissions of $250,000.00 per year or better is unrealistic - especially if those are the *only* clients you're seeking. It's fine to go "elephant hunting" (as it is commonly called) while building your client base with (what Kimball would call) "smaller" accounts of $500,000.00 to $5 million in assets. But to cut out 80% of your book when you're feeding a family of three or four or more is not realistic nor is it recommended.
By the same token, I agree 100% with Kimball that it is imperative to elminate clients and prospects who waste your time. Time is your greatest asset in this business, and you cannot afford to lose a single moment to an individual who does not want to either pay you or unconditionally accept your advise for a fee.
While I disagree with Kimball's philosophy regarding account size, shaving your book (I do - although not as drastically as depicted herein), or the number of accounts you should have, many of the ideas he brings forth (while not new) are fantastic when it comes to refining your focus regarding what you need to do day in and day out.
I think the book is worth it simply for the latter. All in all, a good read.
Top Flight Advice.......2003-08-07
This advisor lays out some of the best thinking in the business. Really helps get you focused and think about your business in entirely different way. As you can see from the reviews below, some people just don't get it and never will, which Kimball admits in his book is one of the biggest issues he encounters - the inability of some people to accept responsibility for thier position in life and do something about it. I suggest everyone buy the book who is in the business - if you do 1/2 of what this guy says you need to do every day, you're business can't help but go up. My guess is that we'll encounter the reader from Cleveland at the counter at MacDonalds before the year is out.
Would have given zero stars 00000.......2003-07-28
This book is a bunch of old hash. Has this advisor really done what he has written. If he is talking with only people who can give him $25,000 annually in fees or commissions, wouldn't you think his average account size is $2.5 at 1% ROA. So only 40 accounts to do a million. He stated in am email "When we are in a building mode, we are seeing as many as 40-60 new prospects every month, face to face. That is almost 3 appointments a day. When do you have time to call. I asked him a question via email about a script to use and received the following:..."We call them on the phone, identify ourselves, and ask them if they would have a half hour to meet with us in the next week or so. this makes them usually ask us why. So we tell them." I ask is this advice worth the asking price with a follow-up book on prospecting. I think NOT.
Ideas that Work.......2003-05-01
I have read virtually every book dealing with how to grow as an advisor. This book is at or near the very top.
Many large firms are good at telling advisors WHAT to do but not HOW to do it. Mr. Kimball shares his experience and ideas, that given time will work. Any advisor, like Kimball, that has reinvented his business several times obviously understands how to find the money.

Customer Reviews:
Duck Callers Delight !.......2006-11-06
After reading this book, I find it to be one of the most if not the most informative instructional tools for any turner who is interested in making high end and high quality duck calls. It breaks down the process of making calls from, choosing materials, styles and basic understanding of the sounding techniques needed to make the best call. It is easy to read and has information not usually made available to the turner who is looking to start out making calls, or to the experienced call maker, looking to improve his or hers technique. The photos are excellent, the colors are vibrant, the handling of the step by step proccess is superb, I would have to say there is not another book on the market of such detailed quality. Since purchasing this book I have turned many calls that have gained me nothing but praise from friends and family, and made enough profit to keep purchasing high quality materials to continue making calls....this book is a bargain in its own right. Buy it with confidence. Share it with pride.
Lathe Projects.......2006-08-19
Great book and subject. Very interesting project for the lathe. Good details and information>
Outstanding Book.......2006-02-25
This is an outstanding book for beginners and old pros. Everyone can learn something about duck calls from this book!! Kudos to the authors for giving out years of experience.
Very good - How to book.......2005-12-09
I would recommend this book to anyone interested in turning calls and has some woodturning experience.
An excellent book on turning several types of Calls, most on the breath type for ducks and other game. You get a short history lesson, then straight into the anatomy of a call and how it works. The tool and material section will even help the novice to know what is needed to begin a new woodturning experience.
A chapter covering the design of the barrel and stopper gives the turner the requirements needed for a good call. The book also furnishes some good plans and patterns but encourages you to work toward your own unique designs. Then the book does a very good job, step by step, on the turning procedures. There are many side bar articles on personal preferences on the different parts of several type of calls. Then it concludes with several finishing ideas and also how to take care of the calls in the off season.
Great ideas and instruction.......2005-11-06
Turning Custom Duck and Game Calls is a well-written easy to follow book on making game calls. I'm exicted to try the ideas in my wood shop. The pictures were clear, and easy to understand. I recommend this book to anyone interested in duck calls and has their own woodshop.

Extremely Helpful.......2006-03-26
This is a wonderful book. I used it to give a presentation at my church on Answering Tough Questions that Children Ask About God.. and Harold Kushner writes such accessible material. It was also useful to me in speaking to my own children about these difficult issues.
Wonderful Book.......2000-11-24
This is a wonderful book. It gives very useful advise to parents who are asked questions about God. The book addresses the easy questions. If you want to be able to answer the hard questions I would suggest you get a copy of An Encounter With A Prophet
supurb analysis of common theological questions.......1997-08-27
This is a supurb discussion of the questions that confront not only chidren, but adults bearing the burden of orthodox creeds. Don't be fooled by the title-this discussion is helpful to all of us who are young, either in chronological age or theological perspective
Excellent for parents & even adults with ?s about God.......1996-11-05
I was taken by surprise when my 3 1/2 year old asked me what God looked like. I thought I'd have another year or two before encountering these tough questions.
I quickly went to the library and got all the books on explaining God to young children. Most books assumed I wanted traditional explainations from mainline religions.
This book actually got me thinking about my own concept of God and where I got it from. I'd recommend this even to people without children.
(Oh, it did help me in a continuing dialoge about God with my 3 1/2 year old

Book Description
Henry Salt (1780-1827) was a key figure in early 19th-century travel, Egyptology and diplomacy. Celebrated for his extraordinary expeditions to Abyssinia, which rivaled those of James Bruce, Salt became the British Consul-General in Egypt during the most fascinating period of its recent history, and was the friend and confidante of Mehemet Ali, Pasha and founder of modern Egypt. He employed the colorful Giovanni Belzoni to excavate at Thebes and Abu Simbel, and undertook important archaeological research at the Pyramids of Giza and the Sphinx. Salt built up a breathtaking collection of antiquities, including the head of Ramesses II now in the British Museum and the sarcophagus of Seti I in the Soane Museum. His close circle included such characters as Burckhardt, Bankes, and Caviglia, and Champollion praised his work on the decipherment of hieroglyphs. Trained as an artist under Hoppner, Salt's paintings of India, Abyssinia and Egypt rank alongside those of David Roberts and Thomas Daniells. This study, the first modern biography of Henry Salt, is a long overdue appreciation of a significant and sympathetic figure, and a vivid evocation of a fascinating period.
