This book is a wonderful guide by an outstanding, dedicated climber. My husband and I had the privilege of climbing with Alli once. It has been our only climbing experience but she provided the expertise and encouragement to allow us to enjoy it. My husband and I are also Alli's dad and mom - so this review may reflect that bias! So far, I have bought at least 8 copies of her book!

This book is heavily overpriced and not worth buying. For a non-technical introduction try Amram/Kulatilaka, for the technical introduction read in particular the books by Mun. In my perspective - as a frequent author on real options - this contribution is a complete waste of money (and lots of it I may add).

An insightful overview and a practical reference.......2003-04-25

Rogers has written an outstanding book on strategic option analysis and decision making. Strategy, Value and Risk - The Real Options Approach provides an insightful overview of historical approaches to valuing strategic options such as, DCF/NPV and SVA, and compares them to the Real Options Valuation (ROV) approach. The book is well organized, concise and easy to read and serves as a practical guide for understanding when and how to apply these approaches.

I regard Rogers' book as an informative reference for anyone involved in evaluating strategic initiatives and find that it is a great complement to the corporate strategy standard, Valuation by Copeland, Koller & Murrin, which briefly discusses the use of option pricing and decision tree analysis to value corporate flexibility.

I appreciate the brevity of Rogers' book along with its focus on key concepts and practical examples, but admit that I would be interested in reading more of what the author has to say about historical and emerging approaches to corporate strategy and decision making. I also agree with another reviewer that providing access to the spreadsheets used in the case studies would be very helpful and further increase the book's appeal as a practical reference applicable to a wide audience.

The truth about real options..............2002-11-26

Let's face it, since the tech wreck and the collapse of Enron, the real options valuation (ROV) cult has taken a pasting. A number of commentators have expressed the view that ROV were just another way of investment bankers convincing investors to pay too much for assets.

To get a balanced insight into real options you should read this book. The truth is that the real option concept does provide a break through in thinking about risk, strategy and value....however, we need to recognise that it is also prone to abuse. As a colleague of mine one said "ROV is conceptually easy to understand - so when you are valuing a project it is easy for a creative mind to find valuable real options under every rock!".

The trick in applying ROV is correctly framing and valuing a real option - and importantly caputuring those "sold" real options (i.e. real options which detract from value). Most books on ROV tend to squib on this crucial stage of framing and valuing of real options.

This book, in a very concise, manner takes you from the underlying economics of ROV, through to the framing and valuation of real options. The best insights in the book come from the three detailed case studies which handily compare DCF and ROV valuations using three case studies (if you want the classic energy trading ROV case study, see case study 2).

If you buy the book, be warned - it is pretty thin. However, this is more than compensated for by the very clear argument from base economics through to valuation which will ensure that your conceptual understanding of ROV is better than other books which get bogged down in the types of real option (e.g. option to delay, abandon...etc) and are three times the length.

My one suggestion to the publisher is that a useful addition would be to provide access to the underlying spreadsheets used in the valuation - it would probably take most readers several days to reconstruct each case study.

This book provides a clear approach to grounding business strategy in the context of value and risk, going beyond conventional approaches focused on key performance indicators and the like. The text is balanced between practical case studies and discussion of the ideas and techniques underlying the "real options" approach.

The first half of the book brings together developments in strategy, real options, risk management and game theory to aid managers struggling to deal with standard financial analyses of their projects that may not be capturing the major sources of value they believe exist. The second half of the book describes the tools and mathematical framework, in a broad range of areas, necessary to practically implement the real options framework.

The text is easy to read and concise, and makes real options accessible to a wide audience in relatively few pages. While it would benefit from more detail in some places, this book should provide both a good introduction and starter manual for those curious about the link between value and strategy.

Balanced discussion on hot topic.......2002-10-25

Real options is a hot topic in financial management. Rogers has written a good book that strikes the right balance between big picture (this is the strategy portion of the book) appropriate for senior management, and details on the analytics appropriate for financial analysts and modelers. This balance is key because a common challenge for real options is making it less of a black box to senior decision makers. As the title indicates, Rogers places real options in a broad context of strategy, valuation and risk management -- some texts on real options come across purely as financial tools and miss this broader context. There are several realistic case studies included (IT project, electricity generation and pharmaceutical R&D). Senior management should read the first half, and financial techies can dig into the details in the second half. I would like to have seen a longer discussion on decision analysis; however, it covers a lot of territory in a compact size.

I'm not a financial analyst but I'm interested in analysing companies for my own investments. I found the book easy to read. It's a big eye-opener for someone who was not aware of all the accounting gimmicks that aggressive companies can play. I'm certainly a better investor now.

That being said, please note that this book won't tell you much about what you need to do to value a company and invest in it. It will help you spot troublesome companies and accounting tricks that don't look right, but after that you're on your own. You need more than this book to be a good investor, but this book is a pretty important part of being a good investor.

I needed this book for a Financial Statement Analysis class. It is a decent book, full of examples, so that makes it very interesting; however, the themes are very repetitive. It not an exciting book by any stretch, but it does have some usefulness.

The publisher limits how many pages can be printed. If you want to print say, two chapters, to take on the plane for reading, you can't print that many pages.

in all likelihood, average investors will not get much out of this book, as average investors don't pore over 10-ks, annual reports and conduct industry analysis prior to investing (which they should!). but for those above average investors who do (read: intelligent investors, per ben graham), this book is an excellent read.

2/3 of the book deals w/ alterting the investor to some of the areas where company mgmt can play games w/ the #s in order to goose the stock price. the examples were helpful, but the insights were not exactly earth shattering for experienced investors.

however, the last 1/3 of the book, on forecasts & security analysis, is worth the price of the book. in 100pgs, you get an MBA-level text on security / credit / financial statement analysis, complete w/ ratio definitions, caveats(!), and applicability. excellent stuff for the beginning or experienced analyst, and i will doubtless refer to the last 1/3 time and again.

This book is for someone that wants an overview style book. It reads as a novel, or loose conversation would be read. Not a textbook style (dry) book.

Great Falconry Book.......2002-09-12

This book was great!! It had so much information I had to read it 3 times to get it all. It has so much info like how to make your own equipment,how to train your bird, tells all the equipment you need to have, and so much more.

The book is very good except that most of the book is from a UK point of view. The book has some good adresses in the back for all of your falconry needs. If you are a novice a seasoned falconer,or just someone interested in Birds of Prey you should get this book.

As a somewhat informed novice, I found this book very interesting and informative. It has good descriptions of the birds used in falconry as well as thorough beginning training techniques. However, the buyer should know this book was written for falconry in the UK. Topics such as governing laws, terrain terms and types of quarry are often "foreign" to ours in the U.S.

This book provides an indepth look at all aspects of falconry. The section on preparing to recieve a bird was very helpful and detailed. I have never read a book which has provided such a detailed description of all common birds used in the sport. I recommend that everyone who is beginning in this sport, or is considering taking it up should read this book. The only problem about this book is that it talks too much about the law in England, which is not relevant to us in North America.

I found "Falconry: Art and Practice" very interesting and fascinating. The author included personal details, sometimes humorous, describing the beauty of the art, not just the instructions and facts, helpful as they were. The book was also easy and enjoyable to read.

Essential for anyone interested in Falconry or Raptors.......1998-12-03

This is a great book for anyone interested in falconry! EmmaFord describes everything in detail and she guided me through myapprenticeship with ease. However, it also contains sound advice for the experienced falconer.

She discusses the most common hawks used in the sport and guides one through the manning and training of the three main groups: Shortwings, Broadwings and Longwings. At the end of the part dealing with the training of the group, she explains hunting with them in detail.

There is a complete chapter on equipment and will help the apprentice to choose the right equipment, with the hawk's safety in mind .

For those unfamiliar with falconry terms, there is a nice glossary explaining them in detail.

I would advise anyone interested in hunting with birds of prey to get this great book by one of the leaders in the field! END

This is an excellent book that looks at many exciting designers and some of their gardens (A.E. Bye, Raymond Jungles, Dan Kiley, Steve Martino, Susan Child, Rios Assoc., Murase, Cardasis, Delaney, Isobelle C. Greene, etc). It is a great inspiration to a landscape designer, and is helpful in that it tells the reader the plant and hard materials that have been used in the featured gardens. It also cites the project brief as well as the site limitations for each garden. A really great book that looks nice on my coffee table AND is useful to me in my work as a landscape designer. Truly inspirational, well-researched, and beauftifully presented. BUY IT!

An entertaining and reassuring look at the mind of the teen. I agree with other reviewers that there are few practical techniques for the parent. However what we needed most was to know we were not alone and that this was a normal part of our kids development. This book was just the ticket.

Understanding Teen Girls.......2007-10-05

In reading this book, it really hits home. He takes real life situations and applies them to your concern and life. As my daughter is only 14 some of the scenarios are not as effective as I would like them to be. I do understand that he has to cover all audiences. As well, I realized last evening in reading the book, that children's minds do not mature until age 25 and I thought I was crazy. I guess this too shall pass, it is just nice to know that other people feel the same pains that you do when dealing with teen age children. I also understand the reason why we send them off to college for a while, this is to keep our sanity as well.

I have found this audio book to be a great help in trying to deal with teenage issues. Most of what is stated is common sense, however, a lot of us need a reminder now and then. In addition, there were also a number of ideas presented which were contrary to the route I would have taken, in trying to manage my teenage son.

This book is a painless method of learning to deal with today's teenagers and why saying, "...but I didn't behave that way when I was your age" is simply irrelevant. Practical advice in a book that is a real page turner. I couldn't wait to read on from the example of outrageous teenage or parental behavior to the "this might work better" solution. Being a grandparent, I gave it to my long suffering son, the father of two teenage girls.
