Book Description
Flowers of Europe describes 2800 of the most common and interesting wild flowers to be found growing in Europe. For over 1900 of these species, the book provides detailed descriptions, their distribution across the continent, and their uses as poisons, dyes, foodstuffs, or medicines. It also
includes keys to the families and genera. The book's outstanding feature is its 192 pages of color plates containing roughly 1000 beautiful photographs of flowering plants in their natural settings. Line drawings are used to illustrate a further 280 species. Beginners in plant identification will
appreciate the illustrated glossary of botanical terms. Equally useful are the lists of the names of well-known plants in French, German, and Italian. First published in 1969, and familiarly known to plant enthusiasts as "the black book," this classic text by Oleg Polunin--one of the foremost
British botanists of his generation--has never been superseded. Ideal as a reference book for field trips, this reissued version will be welcomed by all students and researchers in botany, horticulture, or plant sciences. Conservationists, naturalists, and gardeners seeking a comprehensive guide to
the flowering plants of Europe will also find it invaluable.

Book Description
As our lives become more urbanized, many of us have lost the ability to name these beautiful flowers, whether in cities or countryside, in gardens or conservation areas. This comprehensive field guide will appeal to expert and beginner alike, with over 600 wild-flower specimens from the woodlands, grasslands, and chalk downlands and the mountainous, aquatic, and maritime habitats of Britain and Ireland. Each entry gives Latin and common names; descriptions of flowers, fruit, and leaves; and habitat. Anecdotes on historical background, medicinal or herbal uses, and common folklore breathe life into the text. Chapters also discuss the importance of wild flowers in their ecosystems, conservation and endangered species and offer advice on designing your own wildflower garden.

how to tell it's a flower.......2005-09-24
easy book with easy categories so you can work out what the flower is by its shape. has colour drawings which help, and gives all the names, local as well. some of the wild flowers turn out to be ones we buy and plant ie. not so wild. Very useful when you come across a plant and can't think what it is.

Customer Reviews:
I love this hemp book!.......2007-07-06
I've been making hemp jewelry for quite a while and i've been looking for new styles to get into, so i bought this book hoping to learn some awesome new braids and it definitley taught me just that! If anyone is looking for a hemp jewelry book in order to learn new styles in making them, this is definitley the book to get. It's perfect.
Great for beginners and beyond!.......2006-03-18
This was my first knotting book and I found it very easy to understand. It also explains how to begin and end in very clean ways that other books don't usually show you. Also shows you how to add filler or knotter cords when they start to get short. I particularly enjoyed the phishbone pattern. Very pretty and easy to do projects that look alot more complicated. There's lots of techniques here that you can use and expand on. The writting is not dry like a usual instruction book either. It's personable and fun!
Book Description
Here's what homeowners and gardeners have been waiting for: a top-to-bottom, accessible and authoritative, practical and appealing guide to one of their biggest outdoor investments -- their trees.
Jeff Meyer, host of public television's Tree Stories, takes his love and knowledge of trees to the place that needs them most: the American yard. Well-sited, flourishing trees not only provide lasting beauty and comfort, they can add thousands of dollars to the value of any house or property. In The Tree Book, Meyer presents more than sixty of the most popular native and non-native species in the United States and walks you step-by-step through selecting and growing these magnificent trees, including:
Buying the perfect shade, flowering, evergreen, or fruit tree to complement your house, yard, or garden
Planting and routine care, such as staking, watering, mulching, feeding, weeding, and pruning
Choosing trees that add beauty, from spring blooms to fall colors
Choosing trees for practical needs, from protection against seasonal winds to creating privacy or a barrier to screen out sights and sounds Growing trees in the city and growing trees in containers
Finding trees that attract birds, squirrels, and other wildlife
You'll also find helpful, amusing sidebars and appendixes that include everything from the best tree care products and where to buy them to how to talk tree, as well as an invaluable troubleshooting section on solving common tree problems.
Book Description
The ultimate gardener's guide to trees.
Of all the planting decisions a gardener makes, the choice of trees is the most important. In this beautifully photographed reference, distinguished horticulturist Allen Paterson describes how to choose trees and use them effectively as part of a successful garden design.
Selecting the right species for specific conditions such as climate, soil, and intended function are covered in detail. The book also considers the choice of trees in relation to the architecture of the house or adjacent buildings, the surrounding landscape, and the rest of the garden.
Inspirational and informative,
Best Trees for Your Garden offers practical and proven ideas for placing trees to best effect and using them creatively with other trees, shrubs, and plants. It also includes extensive advice for planting, pruning and maintaining garden trees.
The second half of the book is an extensive directory of the best garden trees. Entries for each tree provide essential details such as leaf shape, flower, height, spread, and speed of growth.
Customer Reviews:
A Beautiful Entry in the Books of Garden Trees.......2005-12-14
There are many books about trees for the garden. Since the number of trees is pretty much finite, each author works to differentiate his or her book from the rest in various ways. Allen Paterson does a good job of that in `Best Trees for Your Garden'.
In this beautiful, large-format book, Paterson describes over 300 trees, their appearance, distinctive features and preferred climate. There are many beautiful photos by Steven Wooster. They alone make the book a keeper. The book is not organized in the more common `handbook' format but with smoothly flowing text. Many readers will find that refreshing and soothing.
Although Paterson lives in England he includes North American specifics as well when it comes to growing conditions of the trees.
Most books about garden trees contain a section on tree care, landscaping, etc. That section is probably smaller than average in this book, but don't let that keep you away. It does contain a tree selector table and, unlike many books of the type, a list of commercial sources for many of these trees.
Very readable.......2004-06-27
The writer has extensive horticultural experience at prestigious institutions in England, Canada and the US. He brings this life experience and background to this book, and he is able to relate to gardeners in the climates and conditions of all three countries. Not only does he have a vast store of knowledge and practical experience on the topic, he presents it in a friendly and readable way.
This book is all about selecting the right tree for your garden. In his introduction the writer acknowledges the significance of selecting a tree that may outlive us. His first chapter, "Understanding Trees" is quite the best introduction to the topic I have ever encountered (and I've read a lot of tree books).
A later chapter, "Trees and Man", while only touching a few highlights, gives a useful overview of the ways in which man has made use of trees through the ages. Rather more than half the book is devoted to directories of broad-leaved trees and conifers. These choices, while somewhat subjective, would make useful and attractive trees in the right garden environment.
The book is nicely illustrated with Steven Wooster's color photographs.

How to Survive Your Baby’s First Year is here to help make that first year with a new baby a lot easier. The book offers advice from hundreds of parents who have made it through the first year with their own babies and lived to share the secrets of their success.
Customer Reviews:
Easy and good read.......2005-10-29
I don't have time to read a book cover-to-cover, so I appreciated 'How to Survive Your Baby's First Year'. I keep it on the night-table by my bed and read a few tips/stories every night. This book isn't meant to be an expert driven in-depth exploration of how to care for your baby. It's meant to share some good advice from real moms and dads on how to get through the first year with your new baby - and it does that well.
1st time mom.......2005-10-21
Somewhat entertaining, quick read, NOT informative. It was more about people sharing briefly their experiences than it was about actual useful tips. It's comforting to read about other parents going through similar challenges but you can read about that for free at one of those online newsletters [...] AND get some real, useful advice from other parents and experts in childcare. Not worth the money to get the book.
I won't be keeping this on my shelf for much longer.
Okay as a fun read..........2005-08-28
I think I got the wrong impression when I bought this book, I thought it would be a little more informative then it was. Most of the comments from other parents are "inspirational," not educational. I was looking for the book to actually give tips on infant care, but there was only a few of them that delivered on that thought. I think it is a good read only as entertainment.
Sister loved it!.......2005-03-05
It got this book for my pregnant sister, and she loved it! Said the stories were hilarious and touching, and the advice from everyday folks was fun and useful.
What to Read When You are Reading the "so called" experts.......2005-01-24
What a pleasant surprise. I was given this book and figured it would be like all the other baby books...i.e. they make you crazy. In the other books some expert tells you how exactly your child will develop and how you should respond. That's not real life.
Every child is different (as is every parent) and that is the strength of this book. The editors have interviewed hundreds of parents who have been through the same new born child experience. They share great and different advice. It is quite frankly a relief to know that there isn't just one way and that other parents share the doubts and experiences that the rest of us do. I highly recommend adding How to Survive Your Baby's First Year to your library.

Charles Burchfield's Seasons (Essential Paintings Series)
ASIN: 0874131863 |
Customer Reviews:
Covers the Bases.......1999-12-05
Mr. Baur's book gives a good coherent view of this great American artists life. It includes many black and white renderings of Burchfield's works and a number of colored plates. While not up to present standards for such a book it does present Charles Burchfield's life with a minimum of interpretation using Burchfield's own diary entries and letters to express the artists thoughts. Could be better, an update would be helpful with all Burchfield's works rendered in color. Be sure to visit the new Burchfield art center (as of 2000) at the corner of Union Road and Clinton Street on the banks of the creek that Burchfield so loved in Gardenville New York.
