A great reference for offbeat finds in Sydney.......2003-08-05

In my first visit to Sydney I covered more ground and learned more about the city than my Sydney-veteran companion had seen in numerous trips. The maps and directions were accurate, and the tidbits were a great combination of history and quirky facts and folklore.

Sydney is a beautiful city and this books gets visitors out of the usual tourist spots. Many of these sites truly are hidden...I found myself searching a graveyard for a unique tomb, walking down a lizard-populated path of rainforest reserve hidden in the middle of a residential area, investigating the mystery of a missing heiress, and scheduling a shiatsu massage (the author was right...getting scrubbed, stepped on, and kneaded was an ideal finale to a day of touring).

For all those who think they know Sydney- be prepared to be amazed!! Interesting facts and local tales enable the reader to rediscover popular tourist areas such as Bondi and Kings Cross. Great walks for those interested in history.......2000-06-13

Viennawalks is a substantial book, with four detailed walking tours. It contains some of the basic information, such as transportation, eating, telephone usage, and banking (no hotel or restaurant listings). The main part of the book are guided walks around four parts of the city. The Stones of Vienna takes you through the oldest buildings, including the Jewish quarter; Vienna Gloriosa passes St. Stephen's Cahtedral, Mozart's Apartment, the Old University; Noble Vienna navigates through the Hofburg (Hapsburg's residence); and Fin de Siecle Vienna looks at turn of the century art and architecture (Otto Wagner's designs, including the Karlsplatz subway station, the museum of fine arts and the Secession). The descriptions are rich in history are are quite detailed (60-70 pages per walk). It is very readable and contains a few pictures. If you want to take one or more leisurely walks through Vienna, and have the time to go slowly enough to soak up the information from the book and the sites in front of you, then this book is highly recommended.

A must for those who are serious about exploring Vienna.......1999-03-16

Viennawalks is simply the best book of its type I have ever read. I first bought it in 1985 and have read it each time before I left for Vienna (at last count, eight!). The author's writing style is unlike any walking tour book you have ever encountered - it reads like a novel. One can tell from the descriptions and antidotes that the author is truly in love with the subject - and it shows! By books end, you feel as though you know the Author. I only wish he would write a volume II that explores the neighborhoods outside of the innerestadt (like Hietzing, Neubau, Spittelburg and Mariahilf). I would be the first in line to buy it. One word of advice to the potential reader - Reading the book before you go is certainly advisable, however, it won't mean a whole lot. But, after your return, you will not be able to put the book down! I have personally worn out 3 copies in the past 14 years! Good reading!

Great Tool 4 Novice/Intermediate Stock & Options Investors.......2002-02-06

Superb investing book suited for beginners and intermediately experienced market investors. Complete chapters devoted to leverage and hedging. Well-written, Caes makes his points clearly, this is better than some books devoted only to options. Use this book and study options for free at cboe.com. Stock selection and gaining an overall market viewpoint also thoroughly covered. I have used strategies covered in Caes' "Tools of the Bear" book to turn $5,000 into $11,000 in two months by buying naked puts. Small typeface makes it mandatory to read his books under very good light. Do not hesitate to buy because they were written a while back, they are still very relevant. Better than many highly hyped market books of recent years. Buy it!

SOME GOOD, SOME BAD...A MIXED REVIEW.......2007-09-16

This is not what you would call a "bad" book, it is just one that did not live up to my expectations. The author gives us around 15 folding projects with a single dollar, a number of projects with multiple bills. I was looking for a book with only single bill folds. Some of the designs are cute, some not so cute. The directions are easy to follow though which is a plus and it is quite easy to teach the young ones the more simple folds. I must admit that the children were much more fascinated with this book than I was. The cost of the book though is reasonable and you probably will not be wasting your money in the purchase. Overall, an okay book, but I would have appreciated a bit more.

Incomplete and Obscure.......2007-08-13

This is a cute little book, but I was disappointed because it contains only 15 figures to make with dollar bills -- five using one dollar bill, seven using two, and three using three bills. Also, I don't consider most of the figures to be interesting ones or anything that most people will recognize upon seeing them. The figures are: eagle, eel, European dragon, fruit bat, horseshoe crab, Jedi, Klingon bird of prey, Oriental dragon, Phoenix, Roger's Rabbit, scorpion, sea lion, squid, tiger shark and vampire bat. Nevertheless, I set out to make every figure -- only to find that steps were missing from the instructions and photos, and I couldn't figure out how to get from here to there on several of the figures. After several failures I ended up giving up in frustration!

There is a bonus included -- approximately every 12-14 pages there is a 2-page spread of "fun facts about dollar bills."

This was the first book I got on folding money and it was nice and all but the things you fold in here just didnt strik my fun fancy really. It was nice to learn the folds on though.

The problem with most self-help books is that we turn to them when all else has failed, and often it is too late to deal effectively with the current crisis. Not that they can't help to point us in the right direction, but the advice would have been a lot more helpful if we had sought it before we got into the problem. Unfortunately, human nature seems to adhere to the "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" philosophy. So we fail to anticipate future problems and find ourselves scrambling for help when "it (inevitably) breaks."

Fortunately, for parents today, there are some excellent books available that can help them prepare for their child's stages of development. These books, written by people who have worked through many of parenting's pitfalls, can make the journey so much smoother and more enjoyable. Dr. John Townsend, who often co-authors with Dr. Henry Cloud, has written a series of books dealing with parenting and relationships that definitely falls into this category. These titles include RAISING GREAT KIDS, HOW PEOPLE GROW, BOUNDARIES WITH KIDS and BOUNDARIES IN MARRIAGE, plus others.

We have heard that a child's personality and tendencies are formed by the time he or she is eight years old. So what hope do parents have when their 14-year-old becomes rude and disrespectful, refusing to follow even the simplest of family rules? According to BOUNDARIES WITH TEENS, help is available, and while the child's personality and tendencies will not be changed, his or her behavior will. This allows the family to function and mom and dad to have a measure of serenity.

Dr. Townsend says, "I have seen many teens become more responsible, happier, and better prepared for adult life after their parents began to apply the principles and techniques discussed in this book. Many of these teens not only made positive changes in their lives, they also reconnected emotionally with their parents at levels that the parents thought they would never experience again." So far very good.......2007-06-01

The book arrived yesterday (well ahead of the initial shipping schedule) and I started reading it right away (I have 3 teenaged boys). After only being about 40 pages in, I'm wondering why I didn't buy this book long ago. It probably could have saved our family some conflict and frustration. As the book says, it's never too late so I don't lose hope.

Excellent book, great practical advice for parents tackling many issues for adolescents. Love it.

A Must Read for Every Parent.......2006-06-28

This book is quick and easy to read due to its methodical layout. The first three parts of the book set the stage for helping parents understand the teenage mind and the general concepts of setting boundaries. Part four lists specific issues most parents of teens will deal with. In each specific issue, the author defines the problem and then describes how to handle the problem. I recommend parents read the book from beginning to end to get the entire picture and benefit of the author's advice. What's nice about the fourth part of the book is that parents can time and time again flip to the specific behavior they are dealing with and review the advice. So far, Dr. Townsend's advice is working wonderfully in our household. I wish this book had been around years ago when my oldest became a teenager! I plan to buy copies of the book for my friends with teenagers.

Dr. Townsend continues the fine tradition of the Boundaries series of Townsend and Cloud. As a youth leader, counselor, and as a father of 2 teens himself, Townsend addresses some basic underlying concepts for parenting teens. The first three sections of the book are entitled: "Be a Parent with Boundaries," "Understand the Teenage World," and "Set Boundaries with Your Teen." The focus here is equipping parents to build better relationships with their teens.

By far the largest fourth section of the book deals with specific issues involved in parenting adolescents: academics, agression, substance abuse, argumentativeness, breaking agreements, chores, clothing, curfews, self-mutilation, deception, defiance, family detachment, disrepect, driving, spirituality, ignoring parents, impulsive behaviors, the internet, handling money, moodiness, parties, peer relationships, phone usage, runaways, sexuality, and the silent treatment.

Townsend balances comforting parents in the difficult situations they find themselves in with teens, practical suggestions for working with teens on their own, and highlighting red flag behaviors that need professional intervention. The book is very readable and easily completed over a weekend. Following through on the suggestions will take longer, but Townsend helps encourage parents to hang in there!
