4 out of 5 stars Museums in depth, plus a surprisingly useful general guide.......2004-06-12

This is a small book, chock full of information for the London visitor who expects to spend a lot of time at the major museums. While most travel books devote a few pages (at most) for a museum, this one spends 22 pages on the National Gallery alone.

In addition to the mundane details, such as opening hours, charges, and tube station -- which are a lot less mundane when you're in need of that data! -- the museum listings show you the highlights (i.e. the art you'll want to see if you're on a mad rush), plenty of maps, and a wing-by-wing guide. For example, for rooms 52-53 of the National Gallery, it says (in part), "The paintings in this room and the next were made before 1400, and show how the rather static, frontal style we recognize from Byzantine icons gradually incorporated greater realism, through the influence of Giotto." And then it tells you a bit about the paintings (or whatever) you're looking at. I'm not sure this is better than a live guide, but it's sure an improvement from wandering around the place, feeling as though I'm supposed to be impressed but unsure why.

The book gives detailed information about these museums: National Gallery, Courtauld Gallery, National Portrait Gallery, British Museum, Wallace Collection, Sir John Sloane's Museum, Tate Modern, Saatchi Gallery, Tate Britian, Queen's Gallery, and the Victoria and Albert Museum. Each is grouped by neighborhood, so you can plan your day at Westminster or South Kensington, etc.

If that's all it did, it might be worth the modest price... assuming you're doing a trip devoted to museums. But if, like me, you'll spend only a bit of time in the museums, buying (and lugging along) a book solely on that subject might seem silly.

However, that's where I was pleasantly surprised. Art/Shop/Eat London really does live up to the Shop/Eat part of the equation. For each neighbhorhood, the book includes a section called "On Route," which lists commercial galleries as well as other, and smaller attractions (such as the London Transport Museum or the Photographer's Gallery). You'll also find a list of shopping destinations in the surrounding area, everything from bookstores to clothes to kids' stores.

*Quite* appreciated is a description of the eating and drinking at both the museums themselves and restaurants in the surrounding area. As I'm sure you know, sometimes a museum cafe is a destination in itself, and sometimes it's an overpriced fast-food joint. This book really guides you: "small and can be very busy," or "sophisticated French cuisine, with a surprisingly good range of vegetarian options." Plus, the general restaurant listings are clear enough (if short) that I'm certain I'll take this book with me on my next trip.

It does list hotels (also by neighborhood), but they're nothing to shout about. You'll probably want to turn to one of your other travel books (or the Internet) to find a place to stay.

Intended for curious adventurers whose travel budgets are a tad shy of luxury, Fodor's UpClose London does an admirable job of sharing enough information "to help you plan your trip ... without nailing you down." The authors, self described "writers and poets, slackers and straight arrows, and travel writers and journalists," start with the basics (air travel and rail passes, money, telephones, where to lay your sleepy head, etc.) but waste no time in directing you to tours, galleries, pubs, theaters, patisseries, shopping, sports, and music--all reached via the ever-navigable Tube (London's subway system).

If you don't have a local friend to accompany you on your treasure hunts and explorations of Olde London Towne, UpClose London is your second-best companion whether you're staying for a week or a year. Restaurant and hotel reviews are arranged by price, and the write-ups offer the inside skinny. In the mood for a traditional British meal? For less than £10 you can eat at the Quality Chop House, which "still serves large portions of hearty British grub like eggs, bacon, and chips," but also offers fare that "is almost a parody of the traditional: Bangers and mash becomes Toulouse sausages with mash and onion gravy." Need to know where to shop for secondhand clothing, paraphernalia for left-handers, or inexpensive furniture? You can find that out, too, by perusing the information in chapter 7.

Although UpClose London gives you the goods on top-rated attractions, the real focus is on helping you experience the "heart and soul of London" off the well-beaten tourist track. From the introduction through guide's end, you'll find gentle encouragement to venture out of your comfort zone: "Sit at a table if you want privacy; better, help prop up the bar, where no introductions are needed, and new acquaintances are quickly made." It's probably the best travel advice you'll ever get. --Heidi Robinson

5 out of 5 stars You're going to LOVE BRITAIN! .......2004-09-23

I've spent a year in England and have made >30 visits all together.

Here are my reviews of the best guides....to meet you r exact needs.....I hope these are helpful and that you have a great visit! I always gauge the quality of my visit by how much I remember a year later......this review is designed to help you get the guide that will be sure YOU remember your trip many years into the future. Travel Safe and enjoy yourself to the max!

      Fodor's
Fodor's is the best selling guide among Americans. They have a bewildering array of different guides. Here's which is what:
The Gold Guide is the main book with good reviews of everything and lots of tours, walks, and just about everything else you could think of. It's not called the Gold guide for nothing though....it assumes you have money and are willing to spend it.
PocketGuide is designed for a quick first visit
UpCLOSE for independent travel that is cheap and well thought out
CityPack is a plastic pocket map with some guide information
Exploring is for cultural interests, lots of photos and designed to supplement the Gold guide

      MapGuide
MapGuide is very easy to use and has the best location information for pubs, hotels, tourist attractions, museums, churches etc. that they manage to keep fairly up to date. It's great for teaching you how to use the underground and the double decker buses. The text sections are quick overviews, not reviews, but the strong suite here is brevity, not depth. I strongly recommend this for your first few times learning your way around the classic tourist sites and experiences. MapGuide is excellent as long as you are staying pretty much in the city centre. When you get to be an old London hand, remember that the classic Londoners guide will always be an A to Z (zed) map and guide. If you want to go a bit beyond the central core of the city (perhaps to Windsor, Hampton, or further away) you really need the proper AtoZ to be able to find exact routes and streets.

      Time Out
The Time Out guides are very good. Easy reading, short reviews of restaurants, hotels, and other sites, with good public transport maps that go beyond the city centre. Many people who buy more than one guidebook end up liking this one best!

      Blue Guides
Without doubt, the best of the walks guides.... the Blue Guide has been around since 1918 and has extremely well designed walks with lots of unique little side stops to hit on just about any interest you have. If you want to pick up the feel of the city, this is the best book to do that for you. This is one that you end up packing on your 10th trip, by which time it is well worn.

      Michelin
Famous for their quality reviews, the Red Michelin Guides are for hotels & Restaurants, the Green Michelin Guides are for main tourist destinations. However, the English language Green guide is the one most people use and it has now been supplemented with hotel and restaurant information. These are the serious review guides as the famous Michelin ratings are issued via these books.

      Let's Go
Let's Go is a great guide series that specializes in the niche interest details that turn a trip into a great and memorable experience. Started by and for college students, these guides are famous for the details provided by people who used the book the previous year. They continue to focus on providing a great experience inexpensively. If you want to know about the top restaurants, this is not for you (use Fodor's or Michelin). Let's Go does have a bewildering array of different guides though. Here's which is what:
Budget Guide is the main guide with incredibly detailed information and reviews on everything you can think of.
City Guide is just as intense but restricted to the single city.
PocketGuide is even smaller and features condensed information
MapGuide's are very good maps with public transportation and some other information (like museum hours, etc.)

      Lonely Planet
Lonely Planet has City and Out To Eat Guides. They are all about the experience so they focus on doing, being, getting there, and this means they have the best detailed information, including both inexpensive and really spectacular restaurants and hotels, out-of-the-way places, weird things to see and do, the list is endless.

4 out of 5 stars Great travel guide, but poor maps.......2000-07-02

The Upclose travel guides are my favorites, but their maps really leave something to be desired. If you want to explore a city without spending a fortune, these guides are for you.

              Book Description

Dr. K. Ravindran's new book goes far beyond other derivatives books in explaining the universe of high-level derivatives. Unlike the majority of derivatives books, which provide simple descriptions of the hot derivatives products of the moment and become outdated when the next crop arrives. Customized Derivatives gives you a quick but comprehensive groundwork in the essential building blocks used to develop ALL derivatives! Once you have mastered these building blocks, this revolutionary book minimizes complex mathematical equations as it shows you how these building blocks are used to develop today's most complex and versatile derivates. As a result, you can quickly understand the uses and values of new options and derivatives vehicles as soon as they are placed on the market. With 142 customized exhibits and graphs, 51 detailed examples, and 11 clear and concise methodologies, Customized Derivatives: Reveals the 11 building blocks of exotic derivatives, so that you can take advantage of the most advanced and versatile investments in the derivatives, using specific examples and with as little complex mathematics as possible, to help you brush up on your knowledge and skills before you risk your company's capital in the arena; Supplies ageless and proven tools for pricing derivatives, modeling the asset value movements underlying each derivative, and using these models to arrive at effective valuation for any underlying derivative.

              Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Loads of Lattice Examples.......2004-05-14

Customized Deriviatives does two things that most books on options do not: 1)Provide 2-3 page in-depth descriptions of many exotic derivates and 2)Illustrate the decision process that is required to model these options using lattices. By using lattices to describe the option pricing process, Ravindran avoids producing yet another dreary options book full of equations and succeeds in producing something that somebody with less than a masters in math can understand. This may not be info that an options expert would find necessary but I had fun using this book to throw models together in conjunction with my quantitative finance class. Next to Haug's "Guide to Option Pricing Formulas", this is the most useful options book I own.

5 out of 5 stars simply and elegantly written book on exotic building blocks.......1998-10-12

The book provides alot of intuition and explaination for a topic that is usually not explained well. i would recommend this book to anyone who is interested in marketing of exotic derivatives.

                Book Description

Nothing is quite as beautiful as the Japanese lamp or lantern. Edward Turner gives both novice and experienced woodworkers the ability to create remarkable lighting devices including bedside, overhead, freestanding, and outdoor lamps. All designs come with detailed instructions and rich color photographs. Projects are rated, with something for every level of ability.

                3 out of 5 stars Japanese lantern.......2007-08-14

This book is full of beautiful projects, but beware. It is also full of errors and inconsistencies. Be sure to read the instructions fully to make sure everything makes sense and that instructions at different points agree. Example: on one project it tells you to use half inch wood, but the assembly instructions call for 3/4 inch wood. In another place a drawing shows a part to be 8 inches, but when you extrapolate it makes the project 7 feet wide.
I expect to build several projects, but I now know to proceed with caution.

                5 out of 5 stars Get Lit.......2007-05-07

This is a beautiful looking book describing some wonderfully nice looking and creatively constructed lamps. The photographs of the lamps are high quality, and the book is like the works illustrated, clean and simple in presentation. I was going to give it 4 stars based on a gut feeling, but felt I was stretching to find something negative, thus I've given it the benefit of the doubt. I can see that others note where some measurements are off in places, but the presentation and style and beauty of the final product made me go for the higher rating in the end. Just be wary during construction, you will be fine.

The 18 designs are amply distributed around various types and themes. You will need a reasonably well equipped workshop to complete many of them or a willingness to work the wood in various ways otherwise (including the optional use of Japanese hand tools). I bought the book mostly for inspiration as to ideas for my own lamps, and as to that, the book fit the bill fine. One could extrapolate the designs in this book and enlarge them to make some really wild house/room lighting. So if you lean toward this kind of style, you will probably find this book to your liking. You must follow the guidelines for lamp distance and temperatures if using the paper approach here. I'd consider substituting an approppriate plastic or glass where possible, and when it wouldn't impact the artistic presentation of the lamp.

All in all, when considering the content and potential for reward even if building only one, you will find that this book is likely going to represent money well spent. I look forward to any sequel.

Really cool projects. A little concerned about using shoji paper, lightbulbs could reach hi enough temps to catch fire. Suggest using stained glass for the flat projects.

The well-documented drop in confidence, happiness, and sense of worth as young girls move toward adolescence is discouraging and unacceptable. As this interactive book from the authors of the Choices series shows, there are many ways to bolster girls whether starting at birth or considerably later on. Checklists, quizzes, and questions encourage parents to examine their own attitudes, define what it means to be male and female, and learn nitty-gritty strategies to help their daughters. Psychologists, researchers, and regular folks are abundantly quoted in this earnest, often enlightening book.

5 out of 5 stars A must-buy for the mother of any daughter!.......1998-03-03

                        This book is a 20!

This is a pen and book process. It asks questions, gives activities and planning guides.

The first part teaches the definition of self-esteem and helps you evaluate your own upbringing and the attitudes you learned as a child that--even though you say you won't--you'll teach your daughter.

It shows you how what you say and DO will help her develop a `Hardy Personality'. It gives a stage by stage strategy for raising a `identity achieved' daughter.

But it isn't just a here's-how-to-do-it book. You develop your own plan for raising your daughter, and part of it is how you will change your own behavior to achieve it.

The authors say: Think of this book as "Raising a Daughter 101". Yep. That's what it is. I just wish I had this 30 years ago when my daughter was an infant, instead of my granddaughter.

But don't give up hope--even if your daughter is a teenager (or 30 like mine) there's a lot to learn in this wonderful book.
