I like the Afoot and Afloat series by the Muellers better.......2007-06-18

Some charts in this book are very hard to read because they are full sized charts shrunken to book size. The Mueller's hand drawn "maps" cut to the chase and provide a fast, simple references to approaches, park facilities, shore-side facilities, fuel docks, buoys, etc. The Muellers are much more informative about individual places. This book is also too large and heavy IMO, it tries to cover too much. I carry real charts anyway, so why screw around with these miniature sized ones.

I'll moor it on my bookshelf and take my old copy of Marge and Ted's book when we leave tomorrow.

The Best for Puget Sound and the San Juan Islands.......2001-02-06

After 10 years of cruising and teaching sailing/cruising skills in this area, and this is the best guide to all of the US waters of Puget Sound and the San Juan Islands. Should be on all charter boats, but often is not, so if you are chartering inquire.

Add a "BBA Chart Kit" for detailed charts, and for the Canadian Gulf Islands "The Dreamspeaker Guide," and you are set!

Finally, adding this season's "Waggoners" guide will give you the latest contact information for marinas, etc.

The first, and still best, cruising guide we bought.......1998-12-22

This was the first book my wife and I purchased when we started boating in the Puget Sound 5 years ago. We have bought dozens of boating books since. This is still our favorite. We have worn it out and are now buying another copy to keep at the house. The descriptions of harbor entrances are more complete than other books we use - we always use Scherer's descriptions for new approaches. The book is fun to read - includes sidebars of historical or social interest. Nice photography and an eye-pleasing layout. (Tidal current charts are included in the appendix.)

Investment pro Michael J. Panzner offers an insider's guide to Wall Street that will appeal to investors on several levels. He starts with easy-to-comprehend definitions of stock market terms such as "short-selling" and "equity-derivative products," and advances to more sophisticated concepts. With his down-to-earth approach, he demystifies the jargon, hype and superfluous data. What's more, he provides an excellent account of the historical factors and recent innovations that have altered global finance. His "10 laws of the new investment universe" are useful and comprehensive. Unfortunately, Panzner tends to glorify the past, glossing over well-documented foibles to focus on modern sins. Still, he provides a frank and insightful view of Wall Street's seductive lure. We recommend this book to investors who want to understand today's market.

nothing new, but detailed explanations.......2005-06-24

While the basic premise of the book is that "investing world has changes and therefore so should you", is certainly true, it doesnt really bring anything original or substantially novel. The author discusses in great detail, well supported by data and analysis, the impact on different aspects or the new "rules of the jungle". Topics such as as increased appetite for speculation are well know now, but the facts behind those conclusions are explained in a detailed manner. Overall, it is an interesting treatment of the topics, though brevity is not one of the author's strong points. Dont expect to find any significant information that will alter your portfolio, but it may give you some info on how things work in stock markets and some of the trends associated with trading. Could have been a 4 or 5 star book, but the arguments and explanations are a bit too long-winded....

Longing for the good old days.......2005-05-30

I didn't warm to this book. The author seems to lament the 'good old days' when individuals were forced to relay their orders through brokers. This offered brokers a wonderful insight on the directions markets would take since they had first hand information about the next day's trading session, from the best and worst traders. A broker can make a lot of money with that.

Alas, these days are gone. People now use electrical order placement systems and brokers are just as clueless as the retail traders. Pity. Of course, few of us had this inside track and I'm not sure we need to lament its passing.

The musings described above make up the bulk of the book. Here is a summary of the changes. Each of these topics is given chapter long treatment.:

Intraday volatility:
New rule: Intraday share price volatility is on the rise.
Old rule: In the past, wide intraday share price swings were less common, and when they did occur they were often associated with unexpected geopolitical or economic developments.

Trading like commodities:
New rule: Stocks are increasingly being bought and sold like commodities.
Old rule: In the past, institutions generally bought and sold stocks based on traditional methods of investment analysis, often with a longer-term perspective in mind.

Approaches and attitudes:
New rule: Investing and reason frequently give way to speculation and emotion.
Old rule: In the past, institutional buying and selling was primarily driven by logic and measured analysis (although emotions have always influenced investor behavior).

Information and communications.
New rule: More information and faster communications often have unexpected consequences.
Old rule: In the past, information tended to circulate around the marketplace in a slower and more orderly fashion, and the telephone was the primary means of communication.

Derivatives:
New rule: Derivatives are exerting a growing influence on share prices.
Old rule: In the past, the action in the derivatives market was generally secondary to what took place in the underlying cash markets (except on certain occasions, such as Triple Witching Fridays).

Seasonality and cycles.

Market Indicators:
New rule: Many traditional market indicators are becoming less reliable.
Old rule: In the past, many market indicators were less widely known and were not affected by today's rapidly changing market forces.

Global factors:
New rule: Global factors and foreign investors are exerting a growing influence on share prices.
Old rule: In the past, American investors and domestic concerns were much more relevant to the direction of U.S. share prices than overseas influences.

The book is also sprinkled with 'action plans'. Here are few:
"...when a stock abruptly breaks out of a clearly defined trading range on relatively heavy volume, creating visual "gaps" on a daily bar chart, this is often a sign that a dramatic change in the outlook has taken place."

"When volatility begins to intensify after share prices have fallen for an extended period of time, it often indicates that a downtrend is nearing an end, at least in the short run."

None of this interests me a great deal. Upon reflection, the title suggests a much better book, something along the lines of 'Post 2003 changes in securities trading rules, and how to use them for competitive advantage'. This book would investigate the surreal world of Sarbanes-Oxley, how securities are added/subtracted from the Russell 2000, etc.

A very good read.......2005-03-06

The most appealing aspect of this book is the thesis itself -- the investment world is changing. This is the first book I've read that effectively addresses many of the cause-and-effect relationships taken place in today's stock global market. I thoroughly enjoyed the derivatives, trading like commodities and the global factors chapters.

Overall, I found this book to be a very good read.

Disappointing.......2005-03-06

My reason for purchasing this book was because a number of experienced and well-known markets participants gave great reviews for Stock Market Jungle. Don't make the same mistake I made. I doubt that most of the reviewers listed in the book actually read it. The book itself adds little to anyone who is the least bit knowledgable about the financial industry. Your time would be better spent reading any one of a thousand other business/financial books.

I bought the book almost 2 years ago when I embarked on my farmhouse renovation. I confess, at the time the book was over my head. Thank goodness for an amazing contractor...here I am 2 years later, and I decided to read the book cover to cover. Wow...everything the book covered was done to my house and now, I actually understand it all! It's 1 thing to upgrade from 100 amp to 200 but it's another to understand why! I've learned alot in the past 2 years and whatever I didn't understand the book explained!

Do Not Buy This Book.......2007-03-19

I have been fixing up older homes for many years and this is the worst book I have ever read on the subject. This author's opinions are a detriment to all older homes. He has a section devoted to how to hang a bunch of Victorian stuff on a non-Victorian house and states that any bathroom built before 1930 has no redeeming values and should be gutted. Furthermore, what he states as facts are totally wrong. For example, he says that the Craftsman period began in 1915. (Gus Stickley went out of business in 1916.) For the respect of all older homes I strongly recomend that you do not buy this book.

My house IS NOT hopeless!.......2002-03-09

I laughed my head off reading this book, from beginning to end! I can almost see & hear Mr. Dworin, sitting on the front porch of his latest project, a mischevious glint in his eyes, answering each of my stupid questions with a real-life-experience story. His wry humor, and (obviously) extensive experience with "worst-case" structural problems and mid-project surprizes convinced me that EVEN I can do a lot of the work my old house needs myself. He's taken the scary part out of the equation.

Thanks Larry...by the way, can I call you for help when I grossly over-estimate my own ability?

Best for specific styles of homes..........2001-08-29

I was disappointed when I received this book to find that much of it is devoted specifically to Victorian and Craftsman homes and architecture. While these styles are mentioned in the book description, you should realize before you buy that this book really is best if you own one of these two styles of homes...otherwise 150 of the 400 or so pages don't really apply. Sure, some of the general information is universal but I was looking for something particular to older homes in general and something about my style of home. My husband and I are experienced do-it-yourselfers of Cape Cod-style homes and we have more Capes and Colonials in our neck of the woods than Victorian and Craftsman homes and found little for us in the second half of this book. However, it is certainly a fine book for anyone who owns a style emphasized between its covers. The author applies his experience and expertise on specific styles to provide nice detail for the right homeowners and renovators.

This book is a boon to Texas vegetable gardeners. Judging from discussions with other gardeners in my neighborhood, this book is comprehensive and useful to gardeners ranging from novice to experienced. It covers topics from the average first and last frost dates in the region to selecting varieties of seeds that will do well in Texas to a specific review of 50 of the state's most popular vegetables. It even includes some information on vertical gardening.

As background material for this book, the reader is referred to "The Scientist in the Crib" (Dr. Gopnik, et al; Perrenial, 2001). It offers a fresh and detailed evaluation of the language acquisition process by infants. At about 6 months of age, a critical change seems to occur. The specific pronunciation patterns of the language(s) heard begin to be retained in a very focused manner. Also see "The Monday Tape" (The Snow Water Corporation) at Akilo.com for more insight into this process. This audio tape, one of a series, provides multilingual speech patterns for infants. These tapes are available exclusively through Amazon.com (not available in stores). It appears that they should help an infant (birth to age 2) gain good pronunciation skills for many widely used languages.

This is a great baby book (and I'm not just biased because I'm one of the baby models in it!). There are plenty of helpful facts and ideas, as well as a lot of useful how-to.

I recently read this book during my pregnancy, having read other books like, "What to expect when you're expecting", and the Mayo Clinic Guide, and this was the best book out of all of the books I have read. I found it well-organized, concise, easy to understand, and extremely informative. I highly recommend it to any expectant mother or father!

It is not only an informative source about the rarest and most sought-after wrist watches by Patek Philippe, it is also lavishly illustrated with amazing color photos that almost stick out of the book. To be able to glimpse at a similar quality of wrist watches you would have to find a specialized museum or fly to Switzerland to the Patek philippe factory.
Makes you envious of this private collector who had the vision and the foresight, as well as the money, to start collecting these marvelous and almost unique masterpieces.

Patek Philipe Complicated Wristwatches.......2000-12-24

Complication is the upmost level in watchmaking and Patek Philipe is the upmost swiss watchmaker. These two things meet in this beautiful album. The history of Patek Philipe complicated watches from 20s up to 80s represented by gorgeous photos. Every watch is represented by dial, movement and case back pictures. The book may serve both as a nice reading and as a collector's book. Excellent print. The only minus is the lack of detailed movements information (ref. number provided for every watch).
