Remarkable book!.......2001-04-20
Less than a day's drive from New York, Boston or Philadelphia, here are magical wilderness preserves, teeming with wildlife. Over 5,000 square miles of forests, lakes and mountains, the Adirondacks are among the most beautiful preserves in the world. The Catskills have deep gorges, great waterfalls, forested mountains, and some of the best fishing streams in the state.
Here is the best guide to these mountains, with tales of the early Indians who roamed the forests, the first explorers, and the constant wars among the French and British, then the American colonists, for control of the land. But the book is mainly a guide to enjoying the region today. After sections on how to get there, the quickest and most scenic routes to and through the parks, the author details the places to stay, everything there is to see and do, the public and private campsites, and the best hiking trails. You'll also find expert advice on hunting, fishing, wildlife photography or just the most beautiful places to relax. The print edition was 192 pages.

Customer Reviews:
A must-have for anyone who enjoys the winding route 28.......2004-01-16
I grew up just off route 28, just outside Kingston, NY. My dad owned a business that is listed in the opening sections of the book, too. Life existed around route 28. But it wasnt until I was able to drive and explore it, that I truly began to appreciate it. Its the best way to view the Catskills in that area. Today I live near the north-west portion of the route, and use it frequently in the summer to travel into the Adirondacks. This book provides an excellent guide to all the sights and sounds along the way through NY's two great mountain ranges.
More than just a travel guide........2000-07-04
I've never seen a travel guide like this one before. I came across it when I was looking for another book about New York State and bought it on impulse. Many travel guides are very selective about what they include -- biggest hotels, most expensive restaurants, etc. But this travel guide tells absolutely everything that is on Route 28 ! Each entry is short but the author is clever about sneaking in bits and pieces of inside information. I thought I knew what was in Kingston (NY) but I have been driving right by it's best kept secrets. I had to laugh at his description of another area I was familiar with as having "soft, lumpy hills" because that's precisely what they look like. This is just an incredible book if you want to take a theme trip -- all the sports museums or all the antique stores. I can see that I'm going to be putting a lot of milage on my car because of this book!

Book Description
New York Times best-selling author, Robert Hagstrom argues that more than ever before the analytical tools displayed by the best fictional detectives are in fact high-level decision-making tools that can be learned and applied in the investment world. In fact, these skills are desperately needed to counter the market hype that has developed over the past decades.
Customer Reviews:
Clueless.......2006-08-04
The idea behind this book is that traits of good crime detectives will also be traits of good investment analysts.
This is done by giving small samples of some of literature's greatest detectives. Then you are to apply the traits you see in the markets.
Mystery lovers will be disappointed. As you are never given enough information to solve the detective's mysteries. Nor are you even given the solution as that would spoil your need to read the original. You instead get choppy pieces that don't really shed much light on anything.
Investors will also be disappointed. You are told such wisdom as do your own investigations, look at all the clues, keep an open mind, etc. No one could argue with such logic, however what did you learn from such things that you did not already know?
There are little or no ideas on where to look in the market for opportunity. There are no strategies discussed that have not been covered in dozens of other books.
It is not that I doubt what the author is saying. It is that I do not believe much is said that any reader would not already know. Of course knowing is different than doing, so perhaps someone would read this book and say "Oh yeah, he is right I should not rely on stock analysts" or "Hmmm market psychology would be a good thing to look into".

love this book.......2007-01-31
loads of wonderful things to knit in this book, just wish it was cold for longer so I can get wear them all
Fun, interesting, and different.......2006-09-23
I bought this particular book because I wanted guidance in making brimmed hats. I don't expect to be felting much but the patterns will be a place to start. What I liked about Vicki Square's book, as opposed to some other hat books, is that each of the hats is significantly different from the others that I think I'm getting my money's worth. Many of the hats are shapes I wouldn't have thought of myself.
True, I won't knit any of them in the exact colorways or details shown, and I may omit a few of the "finishing" touches. But in the world of "people will put anything on their head (E. Zimmerman)," these are pretty cool. I have a feeling I'm going to have to make a frontier in lace for myself... but then, I run to the exotic.
Point, however: I bought the book for the suggestions and direction and I haven't knitted a pattern as written, and probably never will. Can't offer any guidance about how easily one can follow these patterns.
What's Under the Hat?.......2006-07-06
Knitting is a new passion for me. History is an older passion. This book contains both. Knitting patterns include easy and fast to advanced techniques. The blurb about the origins of each hat is the surprise under each hat. The only drawback, perhaps, is the expense of some of the recommended yarns.
LOVE IT.......2005-12-13
Finally a book that has what most of us really want, some funky funny hats. If you are looking for a nice ordinary hat, then stop right there and DON'T get this book. Howevery if you are wanting something EXCITING, different and very creative then grab this book. My 9 year old is a hat wearer and THANK YOU, I was running out of ideas.
Funky Crazy Hats with FELTING.......2005-12-08
The most useful hats in the book and wearable patterns for the general population will probably the the felted hats.
Unless you live in my neighborhood. (A slightly left leaning younger crazier population who will probably put anything on their heads.)
The cowboy hat, fedora and derby are all felted, lovely and very wearable.
The samurai headdress is something my exboyfriend would have begged and cried for until I knit it for him.
The other projects all have their uses. My Ren Faire friends ooohed and ahhhhed over a couple of the projects. (The Frontière and the Renaissance Beret)
And other projects that look crazy (the Chinese Knot Topped Calotte) looks a little too-too in the hot pink and yellow but would be adorable in a different color scheme.
If you're looking for some different hats, it might be worth a try. If you want to try felting a derby it'd absolutely be worth a try.

Cloister herbs.......2007-08-19
The Bonnefont Cloister at The Cloisters museum in New York City is a lovely space overlooking the Hudson River just above the George Washington Bridge. Meticulously planned and planted, the herb garden contains only species of plants known to have been grown during the Middle Ages. It is a joy to visit on a warm spring or summer day. Sweet Herbs and Sundry Flowers is a readable, beautifully illustrated description of the Bonnefont Garden, a valuable resource for any herbalist or historian. It's a permanent fixture in my herbal library.

A glorious volume devoted to the flowers and gardens of medieval times, enhanced with historical detail, medicinal and herbal lore, gardening wisdom, and 140 exquisite color photographs.
Customer Reviews:
Lavish.......2006-04-27
Not a herbal or medicinal guide, Medieval Flowers is a lavishly illustrated compilation of history, folklore, usage, and the significance of herbs and flowers in medieval life. Example: St. John's Wort was a tool of divination, which predicted the course of love and the chances of matrimony, depending on whether a cut sprig wilted or remained fresh.
A welcome addition to my history and gardening libraries.
Less than expected.......2004-05-24
Good for a coffee-table book, with some spectacular photography. However, the actual information on the plants is not in-depth, and the book does not cover a very wide range of plants. I would not recommend this book for a serious gardener or researcher, as there is not enough information to make it worthwhile.
Disappointing.......2003-10-01
The best part of this book is Clay Perry’s flower photography. He is one of the finest flower and garden photographers and his illustrations of growing flowers in this book are classic. Mind you, some of the illustrations of flowers picked and arranged are far too cute for my taste.
The text of the book is just average. It’s literate enough, but it has no spark of life or interest. The research is O.K too, but it covers no new ground and offers no new insights. I found that disappointing because this topic has opened up in recent years and more rigorous research and more lively writing could have enriched the book and offered the reader greater awareness and understanding of a seminal period in our garden history.
The material is well organized and there is a decent bibliography. With some flair and vision this might have been a book worth reading.

Customer Reviews:
Actually quite good, overall, if a bit too broad in focus.......2007-07-30
Let me first say briefly that I don't care for the "Complete Idiot's ...." series name. It's one thing to be called a "Dummy" by another popular series, but a "complete idiot" is taking it a step too far, at least for me. So why did I pick up the book and read it? Well, frankly, most of the other titles available looked a bit too dry, and this was cheap.
In spite of my prejudices against the book, the first four chapters really impressed me, particularly the foundational discussions that analyze what role "stuff" plays in our lives and why we become bound to "stuff." This section of the book cut pretty deeply. As a matter of fact, I should go back and reread it every year or so.
The middle sections of the book dealing with actual organizational techniques, were in my opinion good but only average. I read a couple other organizational books at the same time as this book, as well as many web sites, and found that there is a lot of common wisdom about organization that is expressed in different words, but is more or less equal. However, if you really need this book, then it's likely that you need a plan to be laid out for you, even if it is only common sense. After all, not all recipes are amazingly creative, but we still need to follow a recipe!
Toward the end, the book includes chapters on organizing your taxes, your finances, your pet supplies, your vactions, etc. This is where I more or less lost interest. It's also the primary reason this is a four star (maybe three and a half) rather than a five star review. I've no doubt that these chapters may help some readers. However, if you just want to organize your "stuff," then you may be left wishing for more advice on organizing general THINGS and less advice on organizing specific items such as vacations and taxes.
Very helpful with organization.......2007-04-07
This is an excellent book. It helps you put together a plan to get started. I just got rid of 30 bags of stuff I didn't need. Nice and refreshing. It has helped me with my shopping problem. I highly recommend this book.
Happy.......2007-02-17
Book looks like it is what I want. Received it in good time and excelle nt condition. Thanks so much. KA
This book changed my life, literally........2006-02-04
With all the harsh reviews of this book, I had to put my two cents in. All my life, I had kept everything because I was so sentimental. Any little thing I was given, no matter if it was useful or not, was to be kept. I spent most of my teenage years perenally cleaning my room. It's not that I was a slob persay, but that I didn't have enough room to keep everything put away neatly. So it overflowed into my attic.. which was a mess as well.
When I went to college, the clutter came with me. Finally, the summer of my freshman year, I saw this book (2nd edition I think), in a bookstore and picked it up. I can honestly say it was a Godsend. Georgene Lockwood gave simple advice for dealing with the clutter that had taken over my life. It took me all summer to put everything in order. I had to get over the "attachment" I had to each item. I followed Lockwood's common sense approach for cleaning out each room, and closet. I gave things to friends, charities, had yard sales. For the first time in my life, I started to keep a filing system following the principles put forth in this book. I learned what chores I should do, and how often to keep the house cleaner. Now I have my own home, and it may not be perfect, but the amount of clutter is very low, and pretty much everything has a system.
The straight forward style of writing may be intimidating to those who aren't ready to make a life change. It's kinda like dieting, you have to be ready to change. If you're willing to make a change and strictly follow the steps in this book, you'll be all set.
dissapointed..........2005-10-05
ive read over 10 guides in this vien. this one's an overall dry read. i know my review's harsh but its the truth.

Book Description
On February 22, 1916, Ralph Albert Blakelock's haunting landscape Brook by Moonlight was sold at auction for $20,000, a record price for a painting by a living American artist. The sale made him famous, newspapers called him America's greatest artist, and thousands flocked to exhibits of his work. Yet at the time of his triumph Blakelock had spent fifteen years confined in a psychiatric hospital in upstate New York while his wife and children lived in poverty. Released from the asylum under the aegis of a young philanthropist, Blakelock was about to become the victim of one of the most heartless con games of the century. This remarkable biography chronicles the life, times, and madness of one of America's most celebrated and exploited painters whose brooding, hallucinogenic landscapes anticipated Abstract Expressionism by more than half a century. Like the best biographies, The Unknown Night brings to life a vanished world, the late-nineteenth- and early-twentieth-century New York — a city of artists' studios and spiritualists' salons, shantytowns, and millionaires' mansions. Color and black-and-white illustrations are included.
Customer Reviews:
Fascinating Account of a Brilliant Yet Fragile Artist..........2004-11-10
Blakelock's life is beautifully portrayed in all its glory, madness, and sadness. There is something so haunting about this biography, it leaves one feeling very sorry for this poor man. I had never heard of Blakelock but now have a deeper respect for his work, and more importantly his shattered life.

Blakelock's paintings of moonlight have the weird, dissociated values of gesture that we associate with a much later generation of American painters (e.g. Pollock or De Kooning), at least according to controversialist Glyn Vincent, who notes that Blakelock, after a traditional and demure career as a minor artist of the Hudson River Valley school, made a great breakthrough as the 1870s turned into the 1880s. Unfortunately, insanity came along for the ride, and before long Blakelock was clapped into a mental home even as the prices of his completed paintings soared in a seller's market in the ateliers of the corrupt NY art world.
Enter the real villain of the story, a seductive and beautiful "philanthropist" who, under cover of helping Blakelock's worthy, long suffering and penurious family, worked to rescue him from the asylum but secretly to transfer the title of all his work to her name. You won't believe that one woman was capable of so much skullduggery, but such is the gift of Glyn Vincent's writing that you ALMOST do. Vincent is wonderfully accomplished and always looks to contextualize the individual incidents and privations of his characters inside a wider social sphere, which is much appreciated. Once you start reading THE UNKNOWN NIGHT, its story will never leave your soul.
