1 out of 5 stars Not Quite Match the Reputation of Compass American Guides.......2001-07-21

I was drawn to this book (Last Edition) because I read Utah and Montana in the series of Compass American Guides and loved those two. However, this one came out to be a big disappointment. It is not as well researched and written as others and borders on to be shallow and tasteless. By the way, how much did that international financier pay to have his picture taken in his so-called "palatial" home in the book? I just cannot see the connection between a man in his swimming short and the great state of Colorado. It did a disservice to publisher's reputation to include this title in the Compass series. I wish I could get back my hard-earned money I spent buying this book.

3 out of 5 stars Traveler - look for another book.......1999-03-17

If you are looking for a good travel guide you should choose another book. In these book you will find a lot of background information about Colorado (history,...). I miss information that every traveler is expecting to find in a guide like this. For example where and for how much you can sleep. Where to eat. What interesting places to see? How can you travel around? At the end of the book there is a list of restaurants and accommodations. It is so short that resembles yellow pages.

David Faber's The Faber Report is a scathing critique of the greed that permeates all levels of Wall Street, from analysts and investment bankers to money managers and brokers. Faber, who has been covering Wall Street for some 15 years--first as an editor and reporter at Institutional Investor and then, more famously, as a correspondent on CNBC--relates story after story about the conflict of interest that runs rampant between Wall Street and the companies it represents and the investing public. Organized into chapters such as "Why I Hate Analysts," "Why I Love Short Sellers," and "The Truth About Your Broker," the book mixes firsthand observations with advice to individual investors. For example, in the chapter on stock analysts, he advises investors to "Use mass upgrades and downgrades as a contrary indicator" and "Give less credence to positive calls, more credence to negative calls." While some readers may be put off by Faber's self-congratulatory tone, most individual investors would do well to consider Faber's main point about what really happens on Wall Street every day. This book should especially resonate with fans of CNBC's Squawk Box. --Harry C. Edwards

              Book Description

These days, when CNBCs David Faber talks, Wall Street listens. Unlike the talking heads that populate the financial news channels, Faber is a down-and-dirty investigative reporter. For six years, on CNBCs popular Squawk Box and in his own segments, Faber has broken story after story. Each day over one million people tune in to hear his daily report. Those who know the score know that Faber is the one to listen toespecially now that the market isnt doing as well as it used to. Now Faber has written the smartest, most innovative investment book to be published in years. Like Harvard Business Schools famous case study method, each chapter is built around a storythe story of how a stock was presented to the public. Then Faber extracts clear, easy-to-follow lessons and instructions on how readers can learn the stocks real story, just as he does everyday on CNBC. Readers learn not just how to pick the stocks they want to invest in, but how to avoid joining the penguins lining up for big losses. The Faber Report combines practical, down to earth investment advice with wild accounts of investor fraud, company misdeeds, and famous investors and banks that have led investors astray. 2 out of 5 stars Decent read, but not worth $.......2003-05-20

Explaining how analyists work and their associated confilcts of interest is very interesting stuff. However, this book doesn't really offer advice to investors on how to invest intelligently. In the end, this is a decent book with some good info on how the street works, but its not worth $. I dont plan on re-reading this one in the near future.

5 out of 5 stars Something For Everyone.......2002-09-13

Decades from now, when historians want to get a better understanding of what Wall Street was like at the turn of the 21st century, they won't need to look much further than The Faber Report. Faber's book paints an amazingly clear and comprehensive picture of today's investment climate, giving the reader gobs of insight into the inner workings of the Street.

The book has something for everyone; whether you're a novice investor trying to navigate the world of mutual funds or a hedge fund manager with a penchant for short selling, you'll find it eminently useful. (And if you happen to be the New York state attorney general looking for a blueprint to prosecute Jack Grubman and the rest of Wall Street, you'll find the book very worthwhile!) While the book covers investing basics with exceptional clarity (it has a paragraph on the P/E ratio that is one of the best I've seen), it also contains some headier material that more sophisticated investors will find helpful (his 12 point checklist for uncovering financial shenanigans is a keeper).

It's difficult to write a book that is both entertaining and instructive, but Faber has pulled it off in spades.

5 out of 5 stars The Brain's the best there is!.......2002-09-13

There's no one better in the world of financial reporting than David Faber. As a member of the media, I could only wish to be as connected, informed, and intelligent as he is. But most importantly, he's the best there is when it comes to sifting through the b.s. that has plagued Wall Street over recent years. This book is almost uncanny, in that it was written months before the dominant financial headlines that rocked the markets in the summer of 2002. We get the warnings about Worldcom, Imclone, and so on, well before anyone else does. Plus, he tells the reader where they can find raw data, what to look for, and the signs that a stock is trouble. Not really a "How to Invest" book, but rather, a "How to Be Informed" book. This book is a must-read. Faber tells it like it is. He was right in the 1990s when he warned on CNBC about the over valued Internet stocks, and time proved him right. By reading this book, you'll understand what to look for the next time Wall Street starts blowing a bubble.

3 out of 5 stars Good For Understanding Wall Street But Not for Making Money.......2002-08-19

David Faber is a good reporter in that he does not only repeat what information is given to him but injects some analysis and investigation into his stories. These capabilities are reflected in this book in explaining how the different hedge funds, brokers, mutual funds and bankers interact and affect the market. Although there is some fluff , all in all this book is interesting if only to satisfy your curiosity.
On the other hand, even though it gives you an understanding of wall street it offers no help on how to use that to profit. Considering that most individual investors are in the market to make money, this book leaves a gap to be filled. To that effect I found the book " Generate Thousands in cash on your stocks without selling them" recommended by another reviewer to be helpful in supplying specific strategies to recover losses on stocks in this market.

                      Book Description

For centuries the snow goose has signified the passing seasons to the Indians—its white feathers a symbol of the breadth of life and a reminder of the roles the birds played as messengers between heaven and earth. The importance of the geese in these roles is attested by their prominence in Indian lore and myth.

As a boy growing up in North Dakota, Paul A. Johnsgard measured his winters not by conventional time units, but in the days it took for the snow geese to return from their wintering grounds to Lake Traverse. In this book he recounts the story of one year in the life of a pair of snow geese-the incubation and breeding of the young in the Arctic, their hazardous migration to winter quarters near the Gulf of Mexico, and the spring migration back to the Arctic.

A must read for every bird lover, Johnsgard's concise and informative account of the year in the life of a Snow Goose was truly an enjoyable read. In total, the text runs just over 100 pages, and there are a number of black & white photos, many of which are not, however, of Snow Geese.

Nothing ever goes right for Eloise. The day she wears her new suede boots, it rains. When the subway stops short, she's the one thrown into some stranger's lap. And she's had her share of misfortune in the way of love. So, after deciding that romantic heroes must be a thing of the past, Eloise is ready for a fresh start.

Setting off for England, Eloise is determined to finish her dissertation on two spies, the Scarlet Pimpernel and the Purple Gentian. But what she discovers is something historians have missed: the secret history of the Pink Carnation-the most elusive spy of all time. As she works to unmask this obscure spy, Eloise has more and more questions. Like, how did the Pink Carnation save England from Napoleon? What became of the Scarlet Pimpernel and the Purple Gentian? And will Eloise Kelly escape her bad luck and find a living, breathing hero of her own?

"Deciding that true romantic heroes are a thing of the past, Eloise Kelly, an intelligent American who always manages to wear her Jimmy Choo suede boots on the day it rains, leaves Harvard's Widener Library bound for England to finish her dissertation on the dashing pair of spies the Scarlet Pimpernel and the Purple Gentian. What she discovers is something the finest historians have missed: a secret history that begins with a letter dated 1803. Eloise has found the secret history of the Pink Carnation-the most elusive spy of all time, the spy who single-handedly saved England from Napoleon's invasion. The Secret History of the Pink Carnation, a wildly imaginative and highly adventurous debut, opens with the story of a modern-day heroine but soon becomes a book within a book. Eloise Kelly settles in to read the secret history hoping to unmask the Pink Carnation's identity, but before she can make this discovery, she uncovers a passionate romance within the pages of the secret history that almost threw off the course of world events. How did the Pink Carnation save England? What became of the Scarlet Pimpernel and the Purple Gentian? And will Eloise Kelly find a hero of her own?"

                        5 out of 5 stars Great fun!.......2007-09-27

This was a wonderful book that I absolutely couldn't put down. The characters were fun and the plot was wonderful. I gave it and the sequel to my best friend who also loved them. Can't wait for the next two!

                        4 out of 5 stars good read--page turner.......2007-09-26

My sister-in-law gave me this book to read while we are at the beach, and I could not put it down.

Basically the book is split into two parts: In present day time, Eloise Kelly is trying to complete a dissertation on the spies the Scarlet Pimpernel and the Purple Gentian. She also wants to uncover truth about one spy who had never been unmasked, the Pink Carnation. As Eloise reads the papers/diaries/letters/etc. of these men, we are taken back in time so we can experience everything first-hand.

Luckily, I had not read anything about the book before I started it, so I did not have any preconceived ideas about the book. I did not expect it to be a fully historical book about the Scarlet Pimpernel or that time period, and thank goodness it wasn't. Wouldn't that have been boring! Instead we have romance, danger, espionage, adventure, and more. As stated in the title, it was definitely a page turner (as were her second and third books in this series--I am eagerly awaiting the fourth). So, if you want boring historical fiction, read something else, but if you want adventure, read this book!

2 out of 5 stars Willig is a Bad Magician.......2007-09-04

The concept is interesting, I was hoping that it'd be a fun read. My issue is with the way Willig writes. It reminds me of a little girl playing dress-up. You can see the literary devices and imagery she attempts to use, but it's used so clumsily that instead of being caught in the story the reader can't help but notice what she's doing. The characters are shallow stereotypes, and the dialogue is comically bad. Her prose has the subtlety of a chimp banging two rocks together.
I can't mix enough metaphors to describe my dislike for her work.
To illustrate her prose: "Richard felt like a hound eager to bounce off after a fox. Of course, he had better make jolly sure first that it was a fox, and not just a rabbit, or a bunch of waving leaves. Or something like that. Richard rapidly abandoned the metaphor." (pg. 129)
Too bad Willig didn't abandon that passage before writing it down. I hope the previous passage is self-explanatory. And yes, I am ashamed to have pressed on to page 129 of this book.
I was also embarassed to see that this was called "chick lit"...what does the quality of this book say for women's lit in general, even if it is supposed to be a fanciful novel, by being called "chick lit" it reflects on women's writing as a whole. Why isn't poorly written "men's" lit called "dude lit"?
That being said, the book is barely readable, and Willig never succeeds in drawing you in. If I could change my rating, I would give it one star. Consider all the stereotypes halfway into the first chapter and it's obvious who the Pink Carnation is and who falls in love with whom.

                        3 out of 5 stars Fun & Quirky & Dashing.......2007-09-01

Ok, I am a big fan of history tomes, historical fiction, historical romances ~~ anything that smacks of history, I want to read it. I cannot remember exactly how that love got started, but it's there and it's a vital part of what I read. This book ~~ while flawed ~~ is fun, dashing and quirky. I am not sure if it is historically accurate since I am not familiar with that time period ~~ but it definitely got me interested now and it will propel me into that direction.

Another thing that I love is two stories in one book. There is Eloise, a Harvard graduate student in London to complete her thesis on the two famous spies that saved England from France. She wanted to find out more about the elusive Pink Carnation and only one family has the information ~~ the descendents of the Purple Gentian, who did rescue England from the clutches of Bonaparte. Eloise finds the manuscripts and buries herself into the story of Amy Balacourt, a transplant from the French Revolution ~~ who lost her father and mother within a year. Amy desires nothing more than to avenge her father's death (who was beheaded ~~ her mom died of heartbreak).

Amy gets a chance to visit her brother who somehow survived. She brings along her cousin Jane and their chaperone, Miss Gwen, a formidable woman. The three of them were thrown together with Richard Selliwick, whom they thought was a traitor to their country because he is the director of Antiquities under Napoleon's employ. Amy wanted to join the Purple Gentian's league and save England.

It is a mixture of romance, intrigue with historical facts thrown in. It's cute. It's funny in spots. It's romantic. But the world's greatest book, it is not. One reason, the author tends to leave certain thoughts trailing off without coming to a reasonable conclusion. Secondly, there are parts of the book where it felt rushed and under-written. Thirdly, what started out to be an intrigue turned into a steaming ripping of the bodice romance ~~ which was not what I expected. It's almost if she's trying too hard to please too many types of readers at once.

It is a fun book. It is definitely one that I would share with friends simply because it's cute. It's perfect for those last days on the beach or on the long plane ride during the upcoming holiday season. If you are expecting a historical tome, this book is not for you. If you just want to read something fun and quirky with a little bit of dash thrown in, this one is for you.

4 out of 5 stars Good Balance of Romance, Mystery and History.......2007-08-29

Lauren Willig is all about mixing the genres on mystery, historical fiction and romance. I actually read the second book (The Masque of the Black Tulip) first and only liked it so-so. However, this first one is much better. The author makes the mixing of genres work in this book, where she didn't in the other. The romance wasn't too ridiculous, the characters fun and likable, the historical context appropriate (though ONLY the context is non-fiction, the story is entirely made up) and the mystery remain an undercurrent in the book without the other pieces taking over. Willig remembers each piece of book (romance, mystery and history) and balances them well.

These popular plants bred from various species of the genus Dianthus have long been garden favorites. The late John Galbally, together with his wife, Eileen, devoted more than 50 years to growing and hybridizing new cultivars, and this book represents the summation of that experience.

Casey Dorman's Phinneas and Kim Routledge are in the tradition of Dashiell Hammett's Nick & Nora Charles and the plot machinations of The Maltese Falcon. An entertaining romp through California's Orange County, both past and present, that'll leave you wondering what's fact and what's fiction.

If you remember Nick and Nora Charles, ( the "thin man" and wife) then you are ready to meet their modern equivalents Phinn and Kim, an amateur dectective and his wife who live on California's Gold Coast. They banter back and forth as Phin is drawn into a mystery almost against his will that he has to solve to survive. I enjoyed the setting. (I once had an office across the street from the courthouse described in the book.) The author's use of Vietnamese sayings reminds me of Charlie Chan. His description of academia is wicked and witty. I definately recommend this book.

                                      5 out of 5 stars Wonderful Resource.......2007-10-09

Not only does this book have a lot of names, a good percentage of them are beautiful, unusual additions that wouldn't necessarily spring to mind when trying to think of that "perfect name". Even more appreciated is the carefully researched information given with each name, including the history of the name, geographical origin, meaning, and famous people who have possessed the name in question. As a writer, I consult baby name books regularly for character names, and this is easily the best I've found.

1 out of 5 stars Nothing new here.......2004-02-15

This book was not helpful or interesting to me at all. Getting through it was a chore - I did get through it - but when I was done I hadn't found a single new or exciting name to consider. It doesn't include pronunciations, which I found disappointing as well.

4 out of 5 stars Loads of Information.......2003-01-09

This book contains everything you want to know about names. You will find definitions, related names, examples of people with the name and much more. A great resource to have as you make a very important decision!

4 out of 5 stars Lots of names. That's what you wanted, right?.......2002-12-04

For the standard long list of names in alphabetical order, this book does it well. Girls and boys names are separated into two separate lists, one making up the first half of the book, the other the last half.

Just about every name has its meaning and origin listed. Along with it are variations of the name. This was particularly helpful and gave some extra naming ideas.

But if you looking for something more inventive or creative, this book is not it. It's just a list of 20,001 names. Don't get me wrong, it does what it does well. But reading a list that long may start to bore you.

I'd recommend getting "Beyond Jennifer & Jason, Madison & Montana" by Linda Rosenkrantz in addition to this book. This book probably has more names, but the "Beyond Jennifer & Jason" book will probably keep you awake, and give you some good ideas. I have both books, and I'm glad I do.

I went name by name through this entire book and didn't once stumble across the choice of "Tikki tikki tembo-no sa rembo-chari bari ruchi-pip peri pembo." Perhaps this was #20,002.

It's a shame really as this will be suggestion #1 when the girlfriend and I finally settle down and start having kids. (Note to self: find girlfriend. Preferably one who doesn't mind Tikki tikki tembo-no sa rembo-chari bari ruchi-pip peri pembo as the first born's namesake).

Now you may say "that name is obnoxious. Who would ever choose to name their child that?"
The sort of person who doesn't believe the wedgie factor is high enough with names like "Bryndyn" and "Aynslie" that's who.

                                          Book Description

In this major revision of The Life of Samuel Johnson, Robert DeMaria makes a compelling claim for the attention of a new generation of Johnson's readers and admirers.Even as a child Johnson relied on his extraordinary powers of mind to distinguish himself from his family and to propel him into broader intellectual and social milieux. His hero was Joseph Scaliger and he dreamt of becoming a Latin scholar-poet, a citizen like Scaliger of the European republic of letters. His efforts and talents were remarkable. But financial and personal circumstances prevented him achieving his early dreams. Robert DeMaria describes his subject in terms of Johnson's own personal and professional hopes for himself and gets closer to the historical man than any previous study of the complete life and works.

                                                Book Description

Boswell’s Life of Johnson is established as one of the foremost literary biographies in the English language. This collection of new essays, commemorating its bicentenary, investigates Boswell’s achievements and limitations in both literary and personal contexts, and goes beyond the Life to examine the full range of Boswell’s writings and interests (in legal, social, theological, political and linguistic fields). Drawing Boswell out of Johnson’s shadow, the volume places him in a wider context, juxtaposing Boswell with other contemporaries and compatriots in the Scottish enlightenment, such as Hume, Robertson and Blair. In addition it investigates some of the critical and theoretical questions surrounding the notion of biographical representation in the Life itself. Boswell emerges as a writer engaged throughout his literary career in constructing a self or series of selves out of his divided Scottish identity. This collection combines new archival research with fresh critical perspectives and constitutes a timely review of Boswell’s current status in eighteenth-century literary studies.
