Wind-of-Fire: The Story of an Untouchable is a social commentary and critique of the institutions and social attitudes that support animal segregation and speiciesism in everyday life, particularly in the realm of traditionalist religion.Clair interweaves her insights with her odyssey as a seminarian, accompanied by her dog, Wind-of-Fire, as she attends the Graduate Theological Union in Berkeley, California. As an animal rights theologian with a cutting edge theology, Clair is not ordained within any traditionalist denomination. Her first service for nonhuman animals, which developed into a Ministry for Animals, took place in a Presbyterian church in Berkeley, where she held a memorial service for her dog, Wind-of-Fire, when she passed on. Dogs and one cat as well as their humans attended the service, and all present were offered a "universalist eucharist." The service was picked up by AP and UPI and created controversy. The events that lead up to the service and the service, itself, are fully described in the book. According to a British theologian, "Clair has the accolade of being the first in the world to do serious work on the theology and practice of animal-inclusive liturgies." In Wind-of-Fire, Clair questions the humanocentric nature of liturgy in organized religion and the exclusion of nonhuman animals from its rituals and rites. She notes that invisibility, as with women and other minorities, results in oppression and injustice. Clair's book is a moving autobiographical testimonty to the rights of animals to live justly across species. She has been called a "religious foremother" of the animal rights movement.

Moving on from Jewelry: Fundamentals of Metalsmithing, McCreight has produced an excellent reference book for the metalsmith. Certainly not intended for a beginner, this book is inspirational in the examples shown, beautiful photography, clear consice instructions and more than adequate step by step photographs of some of the techniques. This is more about techniques used than a project based book. Even if you are a beginner, the photographs/gallery alone are worth buying this book for so that you can aspire to create pieces on a par with some of the artists represented in this book. I will never look at a box or locket in the same way.

Another great reference by McCreight.......2006-02-21

I found the section on hinges to be worth the price of the book, and another section on catches is almost as good. Many other topics are covered as well. The color photos illustrate what can be done with the techniques and materials being discussed. A wide range of styles is portrayed, and not everyone would find all of them to be attractive, but that really does not matter. You can create something in your own style using the techniques described. This is a reference work, but I also consider this an instructional book with a number of projects anyone can pursue if he or she owns the basic tools for metalworking.

Another Excellent McCreight Instructional Book.......2005-08-16

After having enjoyed his "Jewelry: Fundamentals of Metalsmithing", I decided I definitely wanted to purchase Tim McCreight's book on boxes and lockets. I had no doubt that this book would be as informational and interesting as the previous book, and I was not wrong. This well-written book excels not only in its specialized instruction in hinges and catch mechanisms, but also in its foundation of basic and intermediate metalsmithing. In addition, the wealth of color photographs of works by many other artists in addition to the author provides a veritable trove of inspiration for one's own original pieces. The appendices provide helpful information and numbers pertaining not only to fabricating boxes and lockets, but to all silver and goldsmithing in general. I must concur with the general consensus that McCreight's book are all essential resources for the metalsmith.

A "how-to" book that really shows you "how-to"........2001-03-25

Tim has gathered beautifully photographed examples of remarkably intricate and creative boxes and lockets. However, rather than intimidate the novice, his instructions are so clear that one can turn out a modest success quickly. This book is to box making what Stark's book is to chains.

Highly recommend........2005-02-24

This book literally changed our lives! It gave us an insight into our 13 year old son, which we would have never have been able to arrive at alone. I purchased 4 books on this subject and read them all. The other three were pretty much psycho babble....stating the obvious and not offering any real solutions. While this book doesn't promise any quick fixes, it does give you some tools, suggestions and, most of all, support. It feels so good to know that your kid isn't the only one. That they aren't underachieving because they are lazy or just don't care. Now, I see that it's just not that simple. It give you a different perspective, from which to see your child and changes your approach on how to deal with issues....especially when you are a Type A overachieving Mom. Parents, arm yourself with the insights that this book brings. You will be a better advocate for your child as you deal with teachers and administrators.

Beautiful book on a soulful and inventive artist.......2000-05-11

Miriam Schapiro, now in her seventies, has been making art since childhood. She grew up in New York City, the daughter of an artist father, a powerful intellectual who became her mentor, and a mother who was a dreamer, a bookworm, and a fabulous housekeeper. (Years later, the home arts reappear in some of Schapiro's ground-breaking feminist installations.) Striving to be an artist in a critically harsh and often socially difficult male-dominated art world (anecdotes abound), Schapiro created paintings, lithographs, and paper, paint, and fabric collages, and later, original and amazing installations and collaborative works. She was a teacher, too, and provided inspiration and community-building skills to countless students and women artists. Her awareness of women's lives informed much of her later work, and her observations are insightful and powerful. This book is generously illustrated, and provides a detailed biography as well as a picture of the various art scenes of this country, midcentury and beyond. Schapiro's recollections and journal entries, along with the author's careful and extensive research, form the source material. First-rate book on a terrific artist.
