Introduction to biology of fungi.......2001-01-11
Modern Mycology , 3rd ed by J.W. Deacon, is a useful introduction to the fungi for advanced undergraduates and grad students in botany, biology or horticulture; a lay person would have to have an unusually good background in biology to get much from the book. A very brief survey of modern classification is given to the level of division, with the rest of the text focusing on various aspects of the biology of the fungi. Various biochemical aspects of fungi are particularly well covered and there are interesting treatments of decomposer communities, mycorrhizae and fungi as pathogens. The book is copiously illustrated with clear line drawings and black and white photos and there are 23 beautiful color plates. I would like more systematic information, but I understand that this is the area of mycology most in flux.

It's easy to argue with the selection of 30 treks chosen from around the world, but there's no arguing with the presentation. Each annotated trip is accompanied by big colorful photos of awe-inspiring scenery: the pastoral highlands of England's Coast to Coast walk; Machu Picchu rising above the ruins on Peru's Inca Trail; austere glacial cirques in Colorado's Maroon Bells-Snowmass Wilderness. The images, in fact, will have any game outdoorsperson chomping at their camelback and ready to hop on the next flight to one of these far-flung and sometimes isolated locales--so it's a good thing that there's so much more than pretty pictures. Route maps, walk profiles (showing difficulty levels and altitude gains), and "factfiles" set expectations and provide essential information (e.g., climate, flora and fauna, transport, background reading), while a detailed itinerary provides a suggested breakdown of daily mileages and camping spots. Some of the classic treks include the California Sierra's John Muir Trail, Vermont's Long Trail, part of the Pyrenean High Route between France and Spain, a Nepalese loop in the shadow of Everest, Mount Kenya in Africa, and New Zealand's Ring of Fire. Even if you don't manage to wear down your Vibram soles on any of these glorious trails, just flipping the pages of Classic Treks will stir the calf muscles and probably send you out the door to your nearest trailhead.
Book Description
" Classic Treks will help you realize your dreams -- of trekking among the world's highest mountains, discovering remote areas far from the noise and stress of civilization, encountering rare animals and birds, glorying in sunsets over snow-covered peaks, and experiencing the satisfaction of completing some of the world's most spectacular hikes. Written by a team of experienced guides who have hiked each of the featured treks, the text evokes the scenery, wildlife, forests and flowers, and local culture -- and transports you to some of the most beautiful and remote parts of the world. Detailed fact files provide all the essential information needed to plan your trip: distance and duration, difficulty and altitude, permits, maps and guidebooks, when to visit, health and personal safety, as well as key features about wildlife, plants, facilities, local food and customs, and scenic highspots. Stunning photographs, illustrations, and specially commissioned maps combine to give a vivid picture of the special nature of each hike and also provide a visual guide to the terrain and difficulty level. A practical introductory section gives advice on choosing a trek, equipment, preparation, general health and safety, tips on camping and provisioning, and guidance about how to protect the wilderness in which you are hiking. From the depths of the Grand Canyon to the foothills of Everest, Classic Treks provides both inspiration and information to help you plan your next adventure. Hikes vary from two days to three weeks in length, and from high altitude climbs in rugged, remote country to undemanding coastal walks, so that no matter whether you are a highly experienced hiker or weekend adventurer, you will find routes to suit your capabilities and inclinations. With a worldwide directory of useful contracts, and covering all the major mountain ranges in North and South America, Europe, Asia, Africa, and Australasia, Classic Treks is sure to be the ultimate inspiration for hikers worldwide. More than 350 color photographs and illustrations."

wonderful read.......2005-03-19
What a great armchair book, I am inspired to do two new walks. wish there was a sequel, thisis a great book for checking out various classic walks, and decicding if they are for you. I love the format, please, please write another one.....
Lovely book... pictures and information could be better........2002-08-23
Having been to 5 of the 30 I have noticed that the hikes are most definitely spectacular, but the photos in this book are not. They are nice, just not spectacular and if you are a professional photographer in front of something spectacular then you should be able to take a spectacular photograph.
Do not think you can plan a trip on the infomation in this book. It gives you a basic overview and a place to start your research.
The list of 30 is great and I hope that I can finish them all. I finished the longest in the book last summer and it was truly spectacular.
Great book with great suggestions and cautions.......2000-08-01
I greatly enjoyed this book. The pictures and advice have prooved to be accurate and timely. The only addition I would add would be alternatives to trips that last longer than 3 or 4 days. It's a great book with great and useful information. I would recommend if for anyone who likes to dream of vacation well in advance and for whom planning and anticipation is half the fun.

Book Description
Since the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) took effect at the start of 1994, production and trade in goods and services have become ever more integrated in the region. Banking and financial systems thus also must increasingly inform, adjudicate, transact, invest, insure, and intermediate all across North America. Presently, however, there is no single or up-to-date source of information on the banking and finance systems of current (Canada, the United States, and Mexico) and prospective (Chile) NAFTA countries. This volume presents the first report on the banking and financial structure of each of the three NAFTA countries and Chile.

Big Dogs Little Dogs: The World of Our Canine Companions.......2002-09-14
If you love dogs, you will love this book. This is a coffee table style book with lots of great pictures and interesting reading. This is one book you will enjoy again and again. Makes a great gift for other dog lovers.
There are much better choices out there........1999-01-24
Published as a companion to the A&E television special by the same name, Big Dogs Little Dogs is, to put it mildly, disappointing. Many photographs are poorly composed and sometimes even grainy and out of focus, while the accompanying text leaves the reader with many questions. For example, what breeds of dogs are pictured, what are they supposed to be doing, and just who are those people pictured with them? Fans of dog shows and other canine sporting events will be appalled at the obvious ignorance of those who put together this book. A photo on page 54, for example, shows a Border Collie in the process of failing an obedience exercise by taking the bar jump the wrong way, yet the accompanying text not only fails to mention this, but fails to differentiate between conformation and obedience competition.
The only positive thing that I can possibly say about this book is that it does contain lots of pictures of a wide variety of breeds engaged in different activities, including frisbee, agility, herding, and assistance. Just don't count on the text to fill in the blanks!

Inspired by her love of fabric, Susan Carlson developed an approach to fabric collage that ultimately resulted in astonishing pictorial fabric art of richly layered textures and patterns. Her superb draftsmanship and masterful sense of color yields quilts more akin to painting than piecework. Luckily, she is just as expert at explaining her methods to others as she is at using them herself; the result is a book filled with crisp color images of her own work as well as some by her students, along with well-written text that details everything quilters need to know to start using her techniques. Rather than present specific how-tos to duplicate her designs, she teaches readers all her secrets so they can create their own designs, using her amazing works as inspiration. --Amy Handy
Book Description
The incredible underwater landscapes, still lifes, and portraits on these delightful pages illustrate how free-style collage techniques can produce exceptional quilts. With no limits and no rules to follow, the book simply demonstrates how different patterns were made. The technique is fun and easy, and the reader does not need a degree in art to produce images that are imaginative, creative, and artistic. Good tips for choosing fabric, drawing patterns, and finishing methods are included.
Customer Reviews:
For anyone interested in breaking free of traditional quilting.......2007-05-14
This book has so much creative inspiration in it! I did traditional quilting for 8 years and while I still love it there was something in me that would long to do something with all those fabrics that had printed animals and trees and bright flowers on them. Something non traditional. This book along with "Beautifully Embellished Lanscapes" by Joyce R Becker made my creative muse completely take off! Even if you don't like fish the techniques and inspirations in this book are sure to inspire you to make something that does capture your fancy. Sometimes there is something about seeing what other people have done that makes the wheels starting turning in your mind and helps you to come up with your methods. If you are even considering this book I would recommend you buy it and give it a try.
For Glue and FISH LOVERS.......2006-03-11
The title of this book is very misleading. First and foremost the ONLY technique recommended (or explored) by the author is cutting and GLUING fabric (yes, "GLUE"). The technique is developed from a combination of foundation and applique quilt methods; hence, the 'free-style' method, is to substitute glue for any and all other peicing methods. In addition, "No Rules" is not a 'play-on-words'; her techniques require extensive drafting/drawing, piece numbering etc. . Therefore, exact guides, measured 'seam allowances' (glue overlap allowances) etc., are imperative to her method.
Ms. Carlson is a huge fish lover. I, unfortunately, am not. 95% of the examples and 100% of the 'exercises' are of FISH. I had hoped for a wider range of subject matter; or that the book description had included this very relevant fact.
All of this being said, the book is very well organized, with lots of color photographs, well written, and true 'hands-on' step by step approach to the author's method.
However, unless you want to glue fabric and depict a lot of fish, I would recommend giving this title a pass.
Opens Up a Whole New World of Quilting Possibilities.......2005-04-14
I'm very new to quilting...having just completed my first quilt and I was looking for what to do next when I spotted Susan Carlson's Free-Style Quilts A "No Rules" Approach. The idea behind this book (and the title) intrigued me. The artist's work, and those of her students are very inspiring. I couldn't wait to start, so armed with the book I went to my local fabric store (okay truthfully I went to all the stores that carry fabric in a 30 mile radius). It changed the way I look at textiles. Picking out fabric, always so much fun now has a new dimension to it. Fabric I might have overlooked in the past holds so much promise/potential. Now I look at the patterns or textures thinking, could this become a fin? Oh, this would be perfect for a butterfly's wing! It's like creating a painting with fabric. Her free-style approach is very freeing. You can use an enlarged photocopy of the picture as a template to cut, but that's more of a springboard. Thanks Susan, I'm hooked. I've posted a picture of my first free-style project (it's still in progress). My mind is brimming with ideas from photos I took in Hawai'i, from flower shows, maybe this summer I'll even attempt a portrait!
What an amazing lady!!.......2005-02-28
I'm shaking. Literally! I have books for Africa on quilting and not one of them has made such an impression as this book. Susan Carlson is simply an artistic genius. Her quilts are nothing short of amazing, the beauty and the realism surpasses belief! Her techniques are simple, clearly explained and shared with enthusiastic joy. I started my own fan-fish, before I'd even finished the book! You're an inspiration Susan, thank you for such a marvelous, delicious book-it's certainly wet my artistic appetite and if I didn't live so far away (New Zealand), I'd be signed up for your next class!
Great Inspiration...and she shows you how.......2004-03-15
This book by Susan Carlson was THE first book that captured my attention, involving a different approach to quilting. I picked up her book at my local library, but I have since purchased my own copy. The traditional quilt patterns have been copied and rehashed so many times, and because they are now being mass produced and sold in department stores--I feel that traditional quilting has suffered somewhat. I was looking for something that I could create that was different and more individual. I like this book because Susan has been very generous in the information that she shares, and although many quilting books claim to do the same, many fall short of the mark. (If you will read the reviews of other "notable" quilting books-you will see what I mean.) Anyone who is looking for a new approach-buy this book and you will not be disappointed at all. The other books that I could recommend, would be the Gee's Bend books, and Piecing: Expanding the Basics by Ruth B. McDowell.

"Nobody plays with me." "All the other kids pick on me." If these are complaints your child often voices, by all means, don't just ignore it. Author Hara Estroff Marano asserts that popularity--how well your child is liked by his or her peers--is the single greatest determinant of a child's happiness and success at school. Yet wanting a child to be popular is nearly taboo in our society, with most parents stressing academic rather than social achievement as a goal.
Marano, an editor for Psychology Today, closely examines and interprets the research on children's interactions and their ability to get along with peers. She finds that kids are becoming less socially competent, and rejection--while always a powerful interpersonal force--has recently become more lethal. Socially rejected kids who have absorbed a message that violence solves problems may even avail themselves of deadly weapons. Marano stresses the importance of play in developing social skills, and decries the phenomenon of the over-scheduled child. A full third of Why Doesn't Anybody Like Me? focuses on what parents can do to help their kids improve their social interactions, and includes suggestions for dealing with bullies and assisting the aggressive child. This book will have parents eagerly turning pages, making mental notes, watching their children's interactions, and working with them to improve their social competence. --Ericka Lutz
Book Description
A parent's love is absolutely essential, but there comes a point when it alone is not sufficient -- when the epiccenter of acceptance shifts from home to school, from family to peer.
This practical, persuasive guide shows parents how to raise their children so that they will be popular -- well liked by their peers. Social competence in children of all ages, Marano says, is not a luxury. Rather, it has an essential impact on a child's later life -- on his or her health, happiness, intellectual capacity, and above all, success.
But how can parents foster the qualities and skills shared by every popular child? And what can mothers and fathers do when their youngsters stumble, struggle, or suffer?
This friendly, impressively researched, and enormously informative guide explores a wide range of issues and concerns including:
- The perils of overprotective -- how to safeguard children without smothering them, and how to turn a shy boy or girl into a confident kid
- Good kids, bad kids, and outsiders -- who gets picked on, why schoolyard cruelty hurts everyone, and what a parent can do when a child is having trouble
- Peer pressure and interpersonal solutions -- how children learn to interact, from the playpen to the playground and beyond, and how parents can foster crucial social skills at every age
- Temperamanent and tantrums -- why youngster act up, from the Terrible Twos to teenage rebellion, what such behavior means in different situations, and how parents can turn conflict into cooperation
Prescriptive and practical, "Why Doesn't Anybody Like Me?" offers parents down-to-earth advice on everything from helping their children make new friends to managing schoolyard bullies. Marano's perceptive insights are powerful psychological strategies parents can use help their children build the interpersonal skills that will carry them through life that form the core of every strong friendship, every satifying marriage, and every successful business partnership.
Customer Reviews:
This is really for a teacher or counselor.......2007-10-04
I was just curious as to what it talks about. I read the foreword only and I felt as though it was not only realistic but outlined as though there is some formula for someone to like you. It may have been informative for someone else but not for me because I do not care who does not like me. Usually people that do not like you do not like themselves and you remind them of something that they are not and never will be.I passed it on to someone else. If you buy this keep in mind that if you love yourself, to not care what someone else thinks becomes second nature. Books cannot generalize a subject like this because everyone is different and there is always inner spirits of people in conflict with one another. If people do not like you that means you are doing something right. Probably not everything but something.
Don't buy this book!.......2007-05-24
Only buy this book if you want to feel your child is a loser, it's ALL your fault and there's nothing you can do about it, EVER! I'm not even going to pass this book on, it's going in the trash! That being said, there are some great kids social skills books out there: 1.) The unwritten rules of friendship 2.) Nobody likes me, everybody s me 3.) Good friends are hard to find
Interesting and Informative.......2004-10-16
Citing considerable scientific research, the author paints a vivid picture of the social dynamics of a child's world. She describes in detail the different social "categories" children are automatically placed in by their peers (bullies, victims, etc.) as early as kindergarten and first grade. For these categories, the author describes how differences in parenting styles and methods can contribute to a child receiving a particular label.
As a parent of a toddler and a preschooler, this book helped me to understand how I can contribute to my children's social development in a meaningful way. Topics such as the importance of free play vs. organize classes, and how to help the developing brain learn to manage emotions were particularly helpful. I feel lucky to have read the book early in my children's lives, since I now have some specific tools for helping my child become socially confident.
The author makes it clear that social issues arise early, and can stick with a child for life. Unfortunately, the book provides little guidance for parents of older children who are struggling, and how to change. In that regard, the title seems to be somewhat misleading -- unless you consider your children to be "raised" when they hit kindergarten! Also, the book is far from a "guide". Though the content is excellent, the sections that provided specific tips for parents were overly simplistic and seemed to be something of an afterthought.
For parents of very young children, I would consider this book a must-read. If you have an older child who is struggling, I think the book might miss the mark.
It SUCKED!.......2004-10-13
I hate the book. It was the worst thing i've ever seen! What ever you do, do NOT buy this book!!!
Excellent - For Parents of Kids Having A Hard Time.......2002-10-04
This is a good base for parents whose kids are having a hard time in school. I found it to be very Cause & Effect which was just what my son (and I) needed. I read it three or four years ago when my son was having a dreadfully hard time. I put the concepts from the book to practice in my own way (i.e., "movie dates" with him where we watched movies and discussed emotions and 'reading' people's body language). No my son is 12 and in 7th grade and he has friends, not tons, but a few, but he is happy and content. Kids like him, he doesn't feel desperate to fit in.
This book is very practical and well worth the time to read and money spent to have it be part of your library... along with Brazelton and Sears.

Book Description
George Frederic Watts (1817–1904) was a titanic figure in nineteenth-century British art. The father of British Symbolism and portrait painter of his age, he forged a controversial career that spanned the reign of Queen Victoria. This book, the first in-depth biography of Watts, sheds new light on the pioneering spirit and breadth of mind of the artist.
Drawing on Watts’s abundant personal correspondence and diaries and an array of other contemporary documents, the book chronicles the artist’s career and personal life, including his friendships with Edward Burne-Jones, Frederic Leighton, William Gladstone, and Alfred Tennyson and his relationships with a series of singular women. The book also examines Watts’s wide reforming zeal and political agenda as well as his role and dealings in the Victorian art world.

Book Description
This is the first ever general history of nineteenth-century English rural workers. Reay provides a fresh perspective on England's rural past, reintroducing those often excluded from more traditional historical approaches, and stressing the diversity of working communities and the dynamism of rural life. Reay challenges stereotypes of rural England, arguing that the extent of localization is so compelling that it forces a rethinking of a unitary "rural England."
