Open Escape to Tuscany and you are there, heart and soul, abducted by a photo of the Castello Ripa D'Órcia. The 15th-century crenellated castle sits high above a valley of olive groves, wheat fields, and vineyards. Skim some more and you're exploring the rocky isle of Giglio among the mint, myrtle, and lavender. Or you land in Torre le Cannelle, an isolated stone tower by the sea from which lookouts used to scan the waters for Barbary pirates. Covering everything from olive and grape harvests to Carrara marble, the Apuan Alps, monasteries, sulfurous spas, medieval cities, the cowboys of Maremma, and the artistic glories of Florence, the tiny dream book also has a chapter of practicalities (with maps, directions to these lovely places, and lodging options that range from villas and castles to hermitages), providing the necessary details to allow your body to catch up to your soaring Tuscan fantasies. --Stephanie Gold

Customer Reviews:
Depends on your knowledge level.......2005-02-03
Please purchase with caution. Someone with an advance understanding of investments will not find this book useful. More history and description of microcaps than acutal strategies or tips for selections.
Great book!.......2003-08-22
As an avid investor and market researcher, I found Dan Coker's "Mastering Microcaps" to be the standard on investing in microcap companies. Unfortunately, while other books shed light on small caps, Coker goes the extra mile, producing 200+ pages of data on microcaps and how to select microcaps for possible investment. This is definitely the definitive book on the subject and I continue to enjoy reading Bloomberg Professional Library books.
A must buy for your investment library.......2000-08-19
This is a fascinating read...the entire Bloomberg series is fantastic but this book and Bloomberg's book on IPOs are great. The book points out valuable readings and web sites to utilize. I would say this book ranks up with the best.
Microcap Stocks Have Been Profitable For This Investor.......1999-10-20
I have always been interested in low-priced stocks. As a preteen, I used to look at the stock tables in the American Stock Exchange, where I found many low priced stocks, and pretended that I was buying and selling. As I got older I have remained loyal to buying low priced stocks, but only after much investigation. "Mastering Microcaps" teaches strategies that I have used, and many that I plan to use. Another very helpful book that compliments this title that has been valuable is MAKING DOLLARS WITH PENNIES: HOW THE SMALL INVESTOR CAN BEAT THE WIZARDS ON WALL STREET by R. Max Bowser. Both books contain strategies for stock selection, when to buy and when to sell. I recommend "Mastering Microcaps" to everyone who has a love for small companies with great futures.

Book Description
This book is a goldmine for experienced and novice boat builders and wanna-be boat builders alike. Based on classic skin-on-frame boat building techniques of the Inuit, learn step-by-step how to construct seven boat styles, from a kayak to a canoe to a small sailboat. Discover innovative materials, such as the well-named "ballistic nylon," that result in strong but incredibly light and transportable skin-on-frame boats. Builders are encouraged to apply their own judgment to a few basic rules and every aspect of the boat can be customized. Detailed instructions are complete with illustrations, diagrams, photos, personal anecdotes and a thorough tool guide.
Customer Reviews:
Great book on skin on frame building.......2006-08-01
I bought this book first and then bought Chris Cunningham's book. Both books compliment each other and since I do not know much about this process, I consider both required reading before I build. I really enjoyed this book. The author really tries to stay faithful to the spirit of the craft where possible. Of course, sealskin is no longer used but there is no glue for the joints (just lashing) and no varnish (linseed oil) so that the boat can remain as flexible as possible. I like that several designs were provided to show the possibilities of making skin on frame boats besides kayaks. It is a fascinating read of an ancient boatbuilding method. I am used to building small boats with wood, epoxy and varnish. I always like to try and learn new methods, so I am glad I came across this book. While this book does not provide all of the minute details and pictures of the Cunningham book, it still is very worthwhile getting. The author's fondness for this craft is contagious and comes across well. I would love to take a course at his shop sometime.
Building Skin-on-frame Boats.......2005-09-01
This is an excellent text for those who are interested in building their own "baidarka" or greenland style kayak. The text is interspersed with history and advice on technique as well as construction details. This is a must-have if you are planning on building your own kayak or "baidarka".
Excellent background and introduction to building.......2005-08-26
Well written and illustrated, Morris' book covers all the details. This book provides a good basic background and a thorough presentation of the design and building processes. You will find all the information you need to design and build your own boat(s), including a good discussion of "urban beachcombing" for materials. A good value for the money and a worthwhile addition to the boatbuilding library.
Valuable.......2005-08-24
This book is a very good base to understand the full process of building a SOF. Good coverage of all aspects but lack precision on some points, and not clear enough to me. I had to complete information with the book of C. Cunningham. Maybe some points are clear to the writer, but not for the novice. Even a good choice but we must have a good knowledge of craftmanship o9r complete with other information.
errors, errors, errors.......2005-07-29
While this book is full of useful information, you must be carefull as it has a number of errors.
In many places the text does not match pictures or drawings. For example, following the text will give you a boat with 9 frames, following the diagrams gives a boat with 11 frames.
When dealing with shaping the gunwales, the text first says cut at an angle about five inches long, then it says six. Six appears to be correct. The book says to cut the keel 1 x 7/8. Later the text appears to suggest but does not come right out and say, that the keel should be 1 x 3/4.
Even with it's problems, Building Skin on Frame Boats is still a winner. Building Skin on Frame Boats gives you lots of background, hints, tips and not just how to do things, but why, which is important for understanding the process.
I recommend that you purchase "Building Skin on Frame Boats", and you also buy "Building the Greenland Kayak, A Manual for its Construction and use", by Christopher Cunningham. Read both very well, and take the best of both books.
Just be sure to read the whole book, then as you build read well ahead of what are working on.

Good Resource.......2007-08-21
I like that this book covers the whole spectrum. It's not just about convincing him to do what I want.
Book Description
Nampeyo, the famous Hopi-Tewa potter (ca. 1860B1942), is known for the grace and beauty of her work, but very little accurate information has been available about her life. Romantic myths, cultural misunderstandings, and outright distortions have obscured both Nampeyo the artist and the person. Based on an exhaustive search of first person accounts, photographic evidence, and interviews with descendants, Kramer provides the only reliable biography of the artist.
By the turn of the century, Nampeyo had revitalized Hopi pottery by creating a contemporary style inspired by prehistoric ceramics. Military men, missionaries, anthropologists, photographers, artists, and tourists all collected her unsigned work. This biography contributes to an understanding of changes on the Hopi reservation effected by outsiders during Nampeyo's life and the complex response of American society to Native Americans and their art. Kramer also presents the first stylistic analysis of vessels made by Nampeyo.
Customer Reviews:
Readable and authoratative biography of a legendary artist.......1999-03-11
Barbara Kramer writes a much needed biography of Nampeyo, the Tewa potter. This book is a comprehensive look at Nampeyo's life, as both a member of the Hopi/Tewa nation, and as a seminal artist. Kramer also succesfully challenges much of the conventional wisdom surrounding Nampeyo's life and work, some of which has persisted for almost a century.
While setting the context in which Nampeyo lived and worked, Kramer also draws a vivid picture of life in the Hopi/Tewa villages at the close of the 19th Century. Beset by archeologists, ethnographers, and missionaries, the Hopis attempted to maintain a way of life and culture that had sustained them for generations.
Kramer writes in a clear, accessible style, and makes liberal use of quotes and other references from Nampeyo's extended family. For anyone interested in the history and development of 20th Century Hopi pottery, this book is a must read.

Book Description
Samuel Beckett's "high energy and boisterously libidinous"(Booklist) first novel--a wonderfully savory introduction to the NobelPrize-winning author during this centenary year.Written in the summer of 1932, when the 26-year-old Beckett was poor andstruggling, Dream of Fair to middling Women offers a rare and revealingportrait of the artist as a young man. Later on, Beckett would call thenovel "the chest into which I threw all my wild thoughts." When hesubmitted it to several publishers, all of them found it too literary, tooscandalous, or too risky, and it was never published during his lifetime. In the novel, Belacqua--a young version of Molloy, whose love is dividedbetween two women, Smeraldina-Rima and the Alba--"wrestles with his lustsand learning across vocabularies and continents, before a final relapseinto Dublin'" (The New Yorker). Youthfully exuberant and visibly influencedby Joyce, Dream of Fair to middling Women is a work of extraordinaryvirtuosity. Beckett delights in the wordplay and sheer joy of language thatmark his later work. Above all, the story brims with the black humor that, like brief stabs of sunlight, pierces the darkness of his vision.
Customer Reviews:
Early, polysyllabic Beckett .......2007-04-11
A one-star review should not be allowed to stand alone for this book, though I may provide inadequate challenge. A fan in particular of early Beckett, i.e. of "Murphy," and of the first part of "Watt" which features a certain Mr. Hackett, I found this exuberant, flamboyant exercise in quasi-poetic comic prose almost their equal. There are individual sentences to savor, for words-as-music (if one consider string quartets and oompah bands both musical), that describe outrageously comic situations and personae with an almost ferocious originality. Yes, the work's style, certainly the hero's stream-of-consciousness interlude, owes quite a bit to Joyce, but Beckett's signature dark humor is already richly manifest. Bleakness expressed in richness, buffoonery in elegant phrases, in color and obvious love of the medium. Beckett may have outdone Joyce in a cheeky display of authorial devices whereby he breaks boundaries of fiction and inserts himself, reveals the writing process, etc. All of this scrambles along, full of surprises, without the least pretentiousness but only the enthusiastic abandon of breakneck youth.
This would be a feast for a literary polyglot, but even if, like me, you don't understand much Latin, little French and less German and Italian, and aren't familiar with, or sure of the meanings of words like

The book shines fresh as rainwater. If you haven't yet, read "Murphy" first, then this one.
Bombastic........2002-11-21
A text ... as an autobiography: Beckett's dream of women after being ... raped by one of them.
His dream is a, now and then, hilarious and blasphemous, but mostly, irrelevant stream of grotesque and excessive verbal displays and of exaggerated metaphors. He uses different language combinations and different quotations of other authors. So, his model is obvious, but he's a bad epigone. This book has no plot, no plan and misses the basic art of writing: it reproduces feelings, instead of arousing them.
One should read a comment by another Nobel Prize winner, Naguib Mahfouz, in 'Adrift on the Nile', where he punches Beckett KO: life could be absurd, but not the royalties.
I consider the work of Samuel Beckett as grossly overrated. A good play is 'Waiting for Godot', which is in fact an evocation of people who didn't understand the words of Nietzsche's Zarathustra 'God is dead'. But afterwards it became mannerism, just a pose.
