              5 out of 5 stars Excellent Read.......2006-03-30

I found this book after attending an online class at bettertrades.com and have never been happier. It's simple and to the point, and makes clear all of the various strategies for trading in a volatile market. Go for the gusto and keep your losses small! (Because there will be some!)

2 out of 5 stars As basic as it gets..........2004-07-20

Could the people with an interest in the sale of this book please stop writing ridiculous one sentence reviews praising this very basic book! The reason most of the reviews of this book are one sentence is because it is the same person trying to restate biased praise. If you are absolutely brand new to trading, this book is fair...but beware. This book was suggested to me by a sales rep. at Wade Cook and you know what happened to him. That affiliation alone should scare you.

4 out of 5 stars Its Title Says it All.......2004-06-18

I've read some of the previous reviews that dislike the lack of technical analysis, especially in the beginning of the book. However, I must say that this book is about how someone could make a living by trading in the stock market, including setting up his own home office, incorporating, among other things not directly associated to trading stocks or options.

With that said, I believe this book is quite good. Its main objective is to give a trading novice a solid footing in what it takes to make a living by trading in the stock and options markets. It is a fast read that does not delve too much into the products Mr. Eldridge's company sells, but stays with the point of the book.

If you're looking for in-depth technical analysis of stocks, you might be disappointed in this book. However, if you're looking for a quick read that could benefit your portfolio or might quicken your transition from your day job to trading full-time, this is the book for you.

              5 out of 5 stars Outstanding.......2001-01-08

This is by far one of the best books for traders ranging from beginner to advanced. It presents market dynamics and trading strategies in easy to understand concepts. This book has proved to be invaluable in helping me make more money. As a matter of fact he even has a website at bobeldridge.com.

This is a great book. The author breaks away from the "buy and hold" philosophy and helps us to see that if we treat our investing like it was a business, then we can do well in "bull" or "bear" markets.

Speaks to a wide range audience as information interestingly applies to rank beginners, but holds your interest with the case studies even if you are a seasoned investor.

This is another great book by Barbara. The illustrations are excellent, and very inspiring. Some people need a little boost to get their creative juices flowing, and this book will certainly do that! Considering what her classes cost, and the costs of her patterns, this book is a real deal.

                  4 out of 5 stars Colourful book.......2006-02-27

I liked the quick technique for the patchwork bags explained in this book, but still feel that the bags in the first book have the edge. As usual the photograpy is fabulous, and the colours are a feast for the eyes. If I had to buy only 1 book, I would buy the first one though.

                    Book Description

Drawing on their own and others' research on decoding, Carmen and Geoffrey McGuinness developed a highly successful reading method, entitled Phono-Graphix, in their first book, Reading Reflex published by Free Press, 1998. This reading method has a much higher success rate than phonics, and it is now being used in many schools in the U.S and other countries and by a large number of reading remedial specialists. Unfortunately, once a child can decode a text, there is no guarantee that she will then necessarily understand what she has read, and, to date, there have been few, systematic, research-based methods for teaching comprehension. To develop their path-breaking Language-Wise approach, the topic of this book, Carmen and Geoffrey McGuinness looked at a wealth of cognitive development research related to comprehension. Verbal intelligence, they show, requires the following: good vocabulary, adequate memory, a knowledge of grammar, strong logical reasoning skills and some measure of creativity. Carmen and Geoffrey developed a series of approximately forty lessons to help children, from six and up, develop these skills. The lessons are fun and can be incorporated into whatever the child is currently reading. The lessons are also accessible & hands-on so that both parents & teachers can easily implement each lesson plan.

1 out of 5 stars Basically a waste of money..........2006-08-11

...the first half of the book can be summarized as an argument that thinking about what you read will help you understand it better and thinking before you write will help you write better...I doubt anyone would argue with that...in the process they attempt to introduce various aspects of thinking that may help...most of the concepts, however, probably are ones with which you're already familiar...not surprisingly they manage to plug their other books, their website and their training seminars every few pages or so...and like many similar "pop" psychology type books there are many "anecdotes" of various indivdual successes they've had...the last half of the book is devoted to various "verbal intelligence activities"...unfortunately the activities are presented only in the most general fashion...for example, "Guess What" is nothing more than a guessing game where the teacher is supposed to provide clues to the pupil as to an object the teacher has in mind...no specifics as to what sorts of items and what sorts of clues would be best or most interesting -- it's up to the teacher to figure out should be chosen and how the clues should be presented...and this is the case in every activity...I don't know but if the teacher happens to be your average parent I seriously doubt they will possess either the time, energy or initiative necessary to come up with all the ideas required for the activities...moreover, I doubt that many would have sufficient training to know what ideas would be appropriate for a given age group, what ideas would be most interesting to a given age age group, etc...also, frankly, most of the activities presented seem quite boring...for example, one activity involves the teacher providing two words (e.g. cramp, lagoon) which the pupil is to use in a sentence...I just don't believe many kids would rise to the occasion for that sort of challenge...in summary, I seriously doubt anyone will find this book to be very useful -- either theoretically or practically.

5 out of 5 stars Great Book-but not the workbook.......2004-06-30

I think that Carmen and Geoffrey McGuinness have hit the nail on the head when it comes to both teaching decoding skills and verbal intelligence. These books have been a great help teaching my dyslexic son to read and comprehend. I finally found a system that worked!

But, the "Language Wise Support Manual" that goes with this book is pricey (about 3 times the price of the book) and unnecessary. While it might help a classroom teacher who needs worksheets that he/she can send home for the student to work on, a parent can just use notebook paper to do the activities.

For example, to go with "Using Elaboration in Writing" page 234 in the book, the workbook simply as a sentence at the top of the page that says "Fill both pages on the topic of________", followed by two pages of lined paper. A great number of the pages are like this.

5 out of 5 stars If I hadn't found this book my son might not be able to read.......2003-08-03

This book gave me my first insight how to overcome difficulties associated with learning to read. The phonemic breakdown of the English language is remarkably well laid out and easy to understand. The precision of the text and user friendliness helped me find my son the help he needed to read and helped me be his coach to help him not just read better but comprehend more thoroughly and accurately. He read the latest Harry Potter book - almost 900 pages - in a week. He is 10. This book helped me understand that although some kids more intuitively make comprehension decisions while reading or listening, those critical evaluation skills asscoiated with language can be optimized by practice and breaking down the process to help a child take it one step at a time.

                    5 out of 5 stars OUTSTANDING.......2000-04-12

Carmen and Geoffrey McGuinness have added the perfect complement to their first book, "Reading Reflex." I have previously believed that there are two components for reading, decoding and comprehension. I now believe that they should be decoding and language development. Through my already extensive involvement with the "Language Wise Method", I am convinced that comprehension is a byproduct of verbal intelligence. I have witnessed it with my own eyes. Understanding what one reads proliferates when syntax (the categorical and functional relationship of words), vocabulary, attention, memory, logical reasoning and creativity improve. But verbal intelligence is not limited to producing comprehension, but has manufactured writing skills, communcation skills, memory and much more.

The comprehensive presentation concerning what verbal intelligence is, human motivation, the nature of language, vocabulary, comprehension, attention challenges, memory, logical reasoning and creativity, make up the first section of the book and supplies the reader with a solid foundation of knowledge about the real issues. Section two presents an aggregate of about forty activities that all team-up to produce the end result, verbal intelligence or making one language wise.

Having read, studied and applied this book to numerous children, I have obtained outstanding results to date. One example is a tenth-grade girl, comprehending at first-grade level who reached grade-level in 15 one-hour sessions with me.

The efficacy of this program is due, in part, to the way in which children are taught. Most of us are aware that when a child discovers something, the likelyhood that she has learned it increases. Through implicit/discovery learning, children are engaged in problem solving, connecting words, analyzing, metacognition, increasing their own vocabulary, and more.

I give "How To Increase Your Chid's Verbal Intelligence" a five star rating. It works and it's a blast.

Just to thumb through Edward Lucie-Smith's Lives of the Great 20th Century Artists is to be overwhelmed by the vibrancy and range of styles, eras, and personalities that have shaped artistic and cultural perception throughout the last hundred years. Arguing that "twentieth-century artworks cannot be understood fully in total isolation," Lucie-Smith includes in each biography not only some sumptuous reproductions but also photographs of his subjects at work, at play, posing as the Next Big Thing (Salvador Dalí, 1937) or caught off-guard in relaxed mode (Naum Gabo with his wife in the south of France, 1920s). A pictorial biography divided into an impressive array of sections, the book concentrates on every essential movement, from fauvism, which heralded the birth of modernism, through the varied forms of European expressionism and American abstract expressionism, to British pop art. In two of the most effective chapters, the artists of pre- and post-revolutionary Russia are studied in detail, and an unclassifiable but impressive array of artists, such as Yves Klein, Louise Bourgeois, and Jean-Michel Basquiat--who "represent new approaches to the problems of making art"--are explored. This is a fascinating record of some of the most arresting visual images of the last century, and an intimate study of some of art's greatest proponents. --Catherine Taylor, Amazon.co.uk

                      Book Description

In our era, artists have become stars. Creative personalities are always fascinating and to learn something new about the twentieth century's greatest artists, whether eccentric or sober, outspoken or reclusive, has never seemed so compelling. In this book, Edward Lucie-Smith relates some of the strangest, saddest, most glorious, and most intriguing life stories of our time. One hundred artists who have shaped our perceptions in this century are presented in lively short biographies. All the entries are illustrated with important works, self-portraits, and photographs, and the book includes an excellent guide for further reading. Clearly grouped according to style and era are modern art's pioneers from Picasso and Duchamp to Louise Bourgeois and Jean-Michel Basquiat. Lucie-Smith vividly evokes the lives of these great personalities and guides the reader through the maze of different styles and movements with authority and verve. Informative and entertaining, illuminated with anecdotes and balanced historical judgment, this is a wonderful collection for everyone interested in the art and artists of the twentieth century.

                      4 out of 5 stars where's Andy Wyeth?.......2000-07-08

I would have given the book five stars if, after having read through the entire book and encountered several rather obscure artists with whom I am not familiar, I had not suddenly realised that Andrew Wyeth was not even mentioned in the book. Why? He most certainly is twentieth century, and most certainly is an artist. Not even an obscure one. Bad enough that NC Wyeth only considered himself an illustrator of books and not a real artist; it is certainly reprehensible that his son, one of the greatest painters of any century, should be left out of a book which purports to chronicle the lives of the great twentieth century artists. This happens to be a very good book, a good overview of the various movements in art during the last century, but it has rather pointedly ignored a very fine and important artist whose enormous body of work should be at least be mentioned. And I won't even mention poor Norman Rockwell, who chronicled every day life in his own century much as the great artists of the past painted what was prosaic to them and very exotic to us. Maxfield Parrish was also ignored in this book. Not an artist, I guess, just an illustrator with the greatest understanding of light since Rembrandt. Oh, well. I feel much about this book as I do about "Great Poetry" collections which always manage to leave out that which I love the most. Everything, I guess, is a matter of opinion. If you know absolutely nothing about twentieth century art, this book will certainly give you a good introduction to the various artists and important movements. Perhaps the writer, Edward Lucie Smith, should have considered two or three volumes, in order to more completely cover this subject.

How does this book differ from the book published by Rizzoli in 1986 titled Lives of the GreatTwentieth Century Artists.? I find it interesting that this is not marketed as a second or revised edition.
