Truly, almost as good as being in the Cotswolds.......2003-12-08
I usually buy a picture book solely for its pictures---and I must say that the photography in this book REALLY captures the essence of this lovely part of the world---however, the text is enchanting, revealing, and has the ability to transport the reader in a way no other (in my experience) travel-ish book has ever done before. I am so sorry the book is out of print. If you have a chance to ever find a copy, buy it! You won't be disappointed.
Book Description
When financial consultant Keith Schooley took a job with one of the largest, most respected securities firms on Wall Street, he had high hopes for a successful career. He was proud to work for a company of such high integrity as Merrill Lynch. It didn’t take long, however, for Schooley to realize Merrill Lynch’s well-cultivated reputation was not based on what went on behind the facade. Merrill Lynch: The Cost Could Be Fatal—My War Against Wall Street’s Giant is Schooley’s detailed account of the disturbing incidents that eventually led him to a courtroom battle with the behemoth firm.

Lite read, mis-leading title........2007-05-15
Book was personal about certain managers at ML. Very common for industry. No earth shattering cases. Just routine sales management for whole industry.
A Factual Expose of the Dark Side of a Brokerage Firm.......2006-01-01
I found this book to expose the truth about the management of the firms that sell investment securities to the general public. Hopefully books like this will help to educate investors and the State and Federal governments about how things really work at the major Wall Street securities dealers. This was a great read for any individual interested in the arbitration process that is used to protect the broker/dealers from accountability for their actions.
admire Keith's courage to fight against ML by himself.......2005-02-07
After read his book, I really admire Keith's courage to fight against Merrill Lynch by himself. It tooks him a lot of time, energy, money to fight for his believing. I was a Merrill Lynch empolyee as financial advisor and was wrongfully terminated. After read this book, I was filled with the courage to fight against the giant firm. A Securities Industry Whistleblower's Profile in Courage.......2004-11-10
This book is a profile in courage of how a private attorney general suffered great personal costs while attempting to uncover corporate wrongdoing in order to serve the public interest. Keith Schooley's well-written book is an odyssey of his struggles with Merrill Lynch management that took him on a journey through nearly every regulatory agency, a blue-ribbon arbitration panel, and finally the Tenth Circuit of the U.S. Court of Appeals.
Mr. Schooley describes in detail how the "powerful and mighty" play the game inside and outside of a court of law, including unethical and perhaps illegal activities. It is a powerful story of the personal costs of whistleblowing and doing the right thing as well as an insider's guide to the world of the securities industry. This book provides insights into institutions such as the Wall Street security moguls, regulatory agencies, arbitration, and the court system.
In view of the current climate of corporate scandals - Enron, Arthur Anderson, WorldCom, Adelphia, and others - Schooley's book is an important one that offers a hard and disturbing look at Wall Street's largest securities firm. As a former employee of Merrill Lynch, Schooley gives a backstage view at what goes on behind the impression-managed frontstage. The public relations voice of corporate America differs significantly from the reality. Mr. Schooley documents a pattern of problems at the firm ranging from brokers to senior management, and suggests that the problems could be even be traced to the board of directors.
This is a book that should be read by not only Merrill Lynch clients, but all investors. Law students and lawyers interested in employment law, securities law, and tort law would also find it a valuable case study of corporate wrongdoing. Finally, undergraduate students interested a career in the securities interest will learn about the perils of the securities industry from this insider's guide.

"The Insider" it is not.......2004-11-10
This is the kind of self-aggrendizing drivel you should expect in a self published book. I guess no one else was interested in publishing the story.
The author worked in a tiny offie in a backwater town and took it upon himself to contact "senior management" in wiritng. I bet he is writing to Bush about the war in Iraq as we speak. I'm sure he will be self-publishing a new book very soon about how Bush ignored his concerns and tried to get his day in international court in The Hague.
Save your money and by a book from an author who didn't have to pay to get it published.

Book Description
When Canadian artist Maureen Enns set out to focus public attention on the grizzly bear she had no idea she would be embarking on a personal odyssey. Soon she was venturing into the remote backcountry of Alberta's Banff National Park and to the northern coast of British Columbia in search of bears. Terrified at first, she discovered that these powerful animals were intelligent, caring, playful and curious, evincing little of the ferocity that makes up popular myth. Grizzly Kingdom is a story of Mauren's struggle to find bears in the wild, and to reveal on canvas and film this majestic symbol of a fragile wilderness. Her artworks and photographs are presented throughout the book.

Disappointing.......2003-11-02
I expected to see several drawings or sketches of grizzlies and found interpretive art - not what I expected, nor cared for.
A fascinating look at bears from a different perspective.......1998-06-09
From the Canadian Annual Book Review - by Patrick Colgan:
This richly illustrated book opens with a map and chronology of artist Maureen Enns' travels in Western Canada. The flowing and candid accounts of these travels include discussions of the biology and management of bears; bears training aand relocation; the high wilderness and its wildlife; and the political, financial, and logistical frustrations of arranging filming and sketching (Grizzly Kingdom is linked with a televison documentary and a series of paintings of bears). The closing material includes a useful set of backcountry tips, a strategy for saving bear habitat, addresses of relevant conservation groups, and a bibliography.
From the Saskatoon Sun - by Tom Loran
People who have not had a lot of experience with bears seem, in general, to be petrified of them. That was the case with Maureen Enns. And her terror was magniied many times over when it came to grizzlies. But today, Enns can sit almost beside a grizzly in the wild and talk to it. What made the difference? Enns is a painter and wanted to do something about the big bears which are under threat across North America, even with very rigidly controlled hunting. To do something, she had to understand the animals, and to do that, she had to go out to them, and spend time with them. So Enns got permission to go into the backcountry of Banff National Park and use park facilities while there. The result was a greater understanding and appreciation of the silvertip, a collection of art and a book describing her fears and her experiences and including some of her art.

John Ruskin: The Later Years
ASIN: 0300032986 |
Amazon.com
He was the most famous and influential art critic of his age, and not so incidentally a stern critic of 19th-century English society, but John Ruskin (1819-1900) was so deeply Victorian in thought and expression that he has been out of fashion virtually since his death. British art historian Tim Hilton introduces Ruskin to modern readers in a meticulously researched biography that elucidates his groundbreaking contributions to the study and appreciation of art without mincing words about his personal problems. The Early Years covers the writing of Modern Painters, whose first volume made the 24-year-old Ruskin's reputation as a champion of contemporary artists like J.M.W. Turner, and of The Stones of Venice, which spearheaded England's Gothic revival. Hilton also examines Ruskin's close relationship with his parents and disastrous six-year marriage to Effie Gray, who received an annulment in 1854 because her husband had refused to consummate their union. (Hilton later concludes that Ruskin was sexually attracted only to preadolescent girls.) Lengthy quotations from Ruskin's diaries and letters vividly convey his personality: passionate in intellectual and social matters, argumentative, often insensitive, and prone to crippling depression. Closing in 1859, a time of frustration and stagnation for Ruskin, Hilton looks forward to his subject's mellowing of character and deepening of convictions in the half-century to come. --Wendy Smith
Book Description
This is the authoritative biography of John Ruskin, the most influential nineteenth-century critic of art and society. It draws on the complete text of Ruskin's diaries and many thousands of unpublished letters and other documents to provide fresh insight into the background and content of Ruskin's numerous books.
Customer Reviews:
Great if often dry rendition of Ruskin's life.......2002-01-04
An affectionately and well-written account of Ruskin's life (I'm referring here to parts 1 and 2 of this biography, taken as a whole). As another reviewer has pointed it, the book does move along nicely, leaving the reader feeling as though he has been given a solid picture of a period in Ruskin's life (the book is organized chronologically), though not that he has exhausted all possible accounts of it, accounts which could easily become boring to all but the most devoted of Ruskin's admirers. The only thing for which I would fault the book is its sometimes cumbersome, dry over-emphasis on facts -- lots of facts. We are too often told about where, what and when instead of why. Perhaps it was the author's intention to give an "objective" account of Ruskin's life, one in the shadow of which we'd paint our own picture of Ruskin the man. But that would seem to be contradicted by the obvious affection with which Hilton writes. Nevertheless, it was an informative read and the two volumes evidence Hilton's enormous work of scholarship. Ruskin was one of the most prolific writers we know of, but here Mr. Hilton shows that he familiarized himself thoroughly with Ruskin's works and letters. If for nothing else, we should be grateful for that. With a little humor and more analysis, this would be a near perfect biography. As it is, it's the most authoritative contemporary account of its subject and a fulfilling read.
Absorbing look into the life of a true genius.......2000-10-26
The first volume of Tim Hilton's biography, John Ruskin: The Early Years, is a fascinating look into the life and work of one of the truly great minds of the nineteenth century. Hilton treats Ruskin's eccentricities with a careful touch. The strangeness of the Ruskin life is there to see. yet the book is not overwhelmed by it. The star here is the Ruskin intellect and artistic sensibility. As a passing fan of Ruskin prior to reading this I felt hugely informed by this book. It is very nicely written and moves at a compelling pace.

This book provides a critical assessment and examination of the prose and poetry of Ireland's Samuel Ferguson. It presents a clear understanding of the shape and purpose of Ferguson's career as a writer, which extended over half a century. The scholarly sources from which Ferguson extracted many of his themes are carefully examined, as are the times during which Ferguson lived and wrote.
