Customer Reviews:
Forget Snorkeling Info.......2003-12-18
I bought this book primarily because I am going to Fiji in two months and wanted info on snorkeling. Boy was I surprised to find only half a page devoted to snorkeling. The rest of the book is a brief description of various dive sites.
The book does have nice pictures and basic information regarding the more popular dive sites in Fiji. But as a snorkeling reference, it is worthless.
For Scuba Divers Only.......2003-08-23
This is an attractive book which the scuba diver will want to order. It maps and describes 74 of Fiji's top dive sites and the color photography is excellent. Despite the title, however, those interested in beach-based snorkeling will find little of use here as almost all of the sites included are accessible by boat only. Even the new Waitabu Marine Park off Taveuni is mentioned only in passing. There's virtually no practical resort or restaurant information, and the first quarter of the book is devoted to brochure-style hype you can read on almost any Fiji website. Critical reviews of dive facilities are strikingly absent, so this book is of no help in selecting a specific scuba operator. Five pages of listings in the back of the book provide basic contact information, but even this is out of date as all Fiji telephone numbers have increased from six to seven digits since the book was published. Most of the email addresses are also wrong, so substitute @connect.com.fj whenever you see @is.com.fj. Nevertheless, when one considers the cost of a scuba tour to the South Pacific and the lack of any alternative Fiji dive guide, all of the above criticisms are mute and serious divers will click this title straight into their shopping carts.
Lacking basic information.......2003-04-07
This book is seemingly a compilation of dive locations frequented by dive resorts, with little independent research or reviews of specific dive outfitters. The book lacks basic information on water temperatures, currents, winds and seasonal influences. The independent traveller primarily interested in snorkeling will also be disappointed in the lack of practical information on the best sections of the main islands for shoreline snorkeling.
a must buy for Fiji.......2002-11-15
Simple no-nonsense guide to diving in Fiji
This is THE current book on Fiji diving (no pun intended...).......2000-12-29
"Ni sa bula vinaka", as it is said in Fiji. As a master diver who has dived since 1956, and has visited many of Fiji's dive sites, I can heartily recommend this book to anyone contemplating diving Fiji. The Mahaney - Witte team- authors, photographers and dive tour guides well-known and respected in the diving community- are knowledgeable and credible. Mind you, NO book can ever catalogue ALL of Fiji's diverse and innumerable dive sites... but this book is well planned, has a very good selection of sites- rated for conditions and experience levels- and information for the would-be Fiji diver. The book has some maps, and a visual feast of photos. In summary- going to Fiji to dive? Be prepared for stiff currents, and a kaleidoscope of colorful fishes and soft corals... and BUY THIS BOOK! Dive well and safely.

Limited and outdated information in a handy size........2000-12-29
As a master diver who has dived over 40 years and has visited many of Fiji's dive sites, I would advise any potential diving visitor to save their money here and buy the newer and much more complete Lonely Planet "Diving and Snorkeling Fiji" by renowned dive guides Casey Mahaney and Astrid Witte (also available on Amanzon). Just be aware- Fiji has so many and varied dive sites visited by day operations and liveaboards NO book can really do justice comprehensively. Nope, no connections with LP or Mahaney, I just want to save other divers the trouble... and if you love diving, you will LOVE Fiji diving!
Mediocre Basic Guide to Fiji Diving.......1999-07-24
This book gives limited information on approximately 20 dive sites in Fiji. The descriptions and photos are adequate, but are relatively brief. The book makes few recommendations, but provides a decent place to start rough planning of an independent dive vacation.

Customer Reviews:
Stock Spllits.......2006-08-21
This is an excellent "how to" book written by someone who makes a living in the stock market. There is no "fill" or other generic stuff, it is all valuable information.
Sub-standard book.......2006-05-18
I have read many investment books but this book is just a piece of garbage. Compare this book to a late night commercial on TV where the guys claim that they made $50,000 in less than a week. But in practice people end up loosing money. If profiting from stock split is an effective technique, do you ever think Darlene Nelson will disclose the secret to the public?. I have been testing this strategy for the past five months and I can very well say that this never works...If you guys are want to make money in Wall street, learn from experts like William O'Neil, Martin Sweige, Jim Cramer etc.
I bought this book because of excellent review found on this site. Now I am convinced that those reviews were posted by the author or people who work for them. What a shame!.
Lot of repetetion.......2005-09-28
The entire book could be written in about 25 pages. The same ideas has been said over and over again sometimes makeing it confusing. But a good read all in all.
Stock Splits: a highly profitable way to make money.......2004-07-11
Most people have heard about stock splits but know nothing about them or why they are so powerful. Some people have even been dupped by supposed financial authorities who claim that there is no benefit to stock splits. This is pure nonsense.
Stock splits are a powerful and highly profitable way to make money in the stock market. Stock splits substantially outperform the market as a whole. Don't believe me? Are you a doubting Thomas?
Do this this. Do back and check on the following stock symbols:
ADSK, EBAY, and CFC for starters. Then go to Yahoo and click on stock splits and check any other stock you want to and compare these stocks witht he market as a whole. Result? In good times or bad times, stock split companies have way outperformed the market as a whole. Some companies like EBAY and CFC have done incredibly well. Had you bought ADSK and held on to it after it split, you would have more than doubled your money.
One problem. How do you profitably play splits? Aside from WADE COOK's WALL STREET MONEY MACHINE series, this is the only book that discusses stock splits and it does it even better than Wade
Cook does in his books.
The Nelson's have taken stock splits and from actual experience developed it into a science.
With stock splits it is possible to make 200% annualized returns. Put that into your IRA or regular account and tell me what that is worth to you!
Great book for all success oriented investors.
Good book on playing stock splits.......2003-09-27
Most people are ware of stock splits, but how many people know how to play them properly?
This book picks up where Wade Cook leaves off in WSMM#1 and WSMM#2-Stock market Miracles.
I like the fact that the Nelson's explain NOT to play all stocks just because they are going to exercise a stock split. Rather, they explain how to find the best stocks and trade them successfully.
I made and continue to make continous cash flow just by playing splits and rolling stocks.
Other books I recommend are WSMM#1 and WSMM#2-Stock MArket Miracles and WSMM #4 and Rolling Stocks.
Ignore the naysayer. Obviously he hasn't read ot tried the advice. His loss!

Customer Reviews:
Don't waste your money........2006-10-09
This book is horrible. I'm using it in my advanced accounting class right now and all I can say is that this book is a waste of time. Its exercises are backwards, not in any form you'd ever run accross in the real world. There's no explanation for the topics. You're thrown into the book expected to know all of the information it presents. If this information is new to you you'll need another accounting book anyways. Save your money and just buy a nice, well written text book.
It's a great book with very useful examples!.......1998-11-12
If you are looking for a book that will help you to understand complex Financial Accounting using cases taken form the real life, this is your book!

Book Description
Presented on these exquisite pages are the most beautiful, most innovative quilts being designed today, all selected from the world-class 14th Biennial Quilt National Exhibition. For almost 30 years, the exposition--which travels throughout America--has served as a showcase for contemporary quilt artists who expand the boundaries of the craft. Large, spectacular color photographs, and the artists' personal commentary, will fill home quilters with inspiration over and over again. All the pieces are genuine artworks meant for display rather than practical use, and they set the standard and serve as the model for other art quilts. From computer-generated images to abstract patterns to human figures, these designs are state of the art.
Customer Reviews:
a must for art quilters.......2006-11-10
I would recommend this book to anyone who is into art quilts. The Quilt National exhibit is a good indicator of trends in fiber art. I received this book shortly before I went to Quilt Festival in Houston, where Quilt National 2005 happened to be included in the special exhibits. If you can't see the quilts in person, get the book!
Quilt National 2005.......2006-03-10
The photos of the quilts are stunning. The color resolution is good and the photos show detail.
A great book on the current state of the art.......2006-02-02
Well photographed and documented, this book is a great snapshot of what's current and exciting in the field of art quilts.
Disappointed.......2006-01-14
I don't know whats going on in the art quilt world these days, but it seems to me that the more you can change the structure of the fabric, the more chance you have to get into a venue like this. These quilts pretty much all look alike to me, and it appears to me that the artists have qualified for this venue by slopping, dropping, and plopping as much gunk on the fabric as it can hold. There is more to art quilting than surface design! I do have to say that there are some truely breathtaking works in this book, but over all I was extremely disappointed. There is more to art quilting than pure abstraction and embellishment!

Author of
Grace-Based Parenting and the best-selling
Little House on the Freeway, Dr. Tim Kimmel helps Christian parents avoid the potential problems their well-meaning parenting styles could create. This book offers a new way to look at the "ideal" Christian home and shows why "cocoon-style" Christian homes don't always work.
Many parents have "done it all" when it comes to the checklist of good Christian parenting, only to see their son or daughter step away from their belief system and embrace other lifestyle choices.
Dr. Kimmel helps to increase the chances that your children will develop a vibrant faith early in life and stick with it on into adulthood. It will also provide help and hope for those already dealing with a rebellious teen and teach them how to lead the child back into a walk of faith.
Customer Reviews:
Analyzing your Parenting.......2007-09-30
This is not about tattoos and rock and roll and controlling your child (like others have assumed), but about what you can do as a parent to help your child not turn away from the Christian faith they have been raised in (rebel). It might surprise you that Dr. Kimmel actually encourages you to allow your child to experience the world and not be sheltered by a "Christian everything" community. He talks about the importance of your child's faith being their own, and not a "hobby" they are a part of because the parent has a strong faith. He points out decisions that many Christian parents make, which actually backfire. Being a child who rebelled, he is right on the mark. It has helped me (now as a parent) as I can identify mistakes from my youth that I do not want to repeat with my children. I strongly recommend this for every parent who wants to encourage their child's spiritual growth and not hinder it.
Can't I give it 10 Stars?.......2007-07-12
Obviously, those who rated this book low, based on their comments, did not read the book.
This book has very, very, very few words about how to "raise" our children.
It will, however, cause the parent reader some uncomfortable moments as Dr. Kimmel shatters the standard American Christian ideas of "requirements" for raising Spiritual Children.
Dr. Kimmel will focus you on your own spiritual walk. What are you showing your children about what you believe real faith is by the way you live. He will allow you to see that how you live out your faith in your daily lives impacts how your children grow in their faith.
As a child raised in a strict religious environment, this book provided me a good framework for really understanding why I turned as far away as possible from "religion."
This book is a keeper - something to be reviewed at least annually as a spot-check on how am I walking in my faith - and to remind me that there are 4 little eyes watching how I live and what they see will impact them much more than what they hear at church or school.
One warning for those Christians who believe that by shielding your children from worldly influences you are benefitting them more than those who send their kids to public school, or allow their kids to read Harry Potter or go to movies, etc - this book might offend you. Give it a chance - get all the way through it and evaluate it with an open, prayerful heart. Ask the Lord if there is any truth He would like you to think about? Perhaps for your family, your choices are the right ones, but Dr. Kimmel definitely presents another way of looking at things.
Excellent book for every Christian parent.......2007-03-16
As a Christian parent I often feel intimidated by the task of passing my faith on to my children. I picked up this book from our church book table and am so glad that I did.
It was not so much about rebellion, as about how to raise your children to NOT see rebellion as an attractive option. What a weight was lifted off my shoulders as for the first time i really caught a vision of what path to follow to help my children grow up knowing and loving Christ.
The book has a message of truth and hope - not condemnation - though the author has strong things to say about what environments tend to breed rebellion. I highly recommend this book along with Grace Based Parenting by Tim Kimmel.
Biblical Parenting.......2007-02-19
Dr. Kimmel's book helped me understand a great deal of my own teenage rebellion years ago. I know that I am ultimately responsible. However, it comforted me to know why I was frustrated as a teenager and why I rebelled against my Christian faith for several years.
This book covers the different styles of parenting that breeds rebellion. It is a great read for students, adults, parents, and parents who no longer have children living at home.
I taught through this book in a parenting class. It proved to be very helpful to them. Some parents shied away from it because of the title. They didn't believe their kids were rebellious or ever would be. As Dr. Kimmel will state in his book, not every child rebels the same way. Their rebellion may come later when they are out of your house.
This book is for everyone. Even for those parents who believe themselves to be the model parents who do not need a lesson on biblical parenting.
As for the student on the front of the book. I have been in youth ministry for many years now. I have also taught in Public and Private Schools. Is this what many teenagers "look" like. Yes it is. But the question is, "Should it be?" Whether you are a teenager or an adult... you should give a great deal of thought as to what it means to be in the world but not of it.
If you are a Christian... I believe the real issue is not clothes, hairstyle, piercings, etc. The real issue is Christ-likeness, holiness, being aliens and strangers in our modern day Babylon. Real Christians will understand this. The world will scoff at it. If Christian teenagers desire to look like the world... you know there is rebellion lurking in their hearts. Man's sinful nature says, "Express yourself!" The world seeks to throw off all forms of authority. Trust me... I remember why I got an ear ring when I was a teenager. I remember why I rebelled against my parents and the faith. I didn't see biblical Christianity matching up to what was modeled to me. I was tired of fighting against the grain of culture. "If you can't beat them, join them." This was my thinking. I did what I did out of pure human "free will" rebellion!
Of course, if the parents are dressing like the world, acting like the world, and are not modeling Christ in every way... the rebellion lurking in the child's heart may be a learned thing. Most of the time... this is the case. Although, you will occasionally have children who rebel despite their parents loving guidance.
All mankind is born rebellious. Man ultimately wants to do his own thing. This is not just a problem for teenagers, but for adults too. Every child should be given the opportunity to choose their own way when they reach a certain age. If the parent is confident in the way they have raised their child, they will have no problem releasing them to make their own decisions when they reach the time to leave the nest.
I have seen two extremes among parents: some let their children do whatever they want AND some do not allow them to make any decisions for themselves at all. These children do not have the true love of God modeled to them. They have parents who parent by worldly wisdom. If you're not willing to let your child choose his own way at the end of high school (and possibly sooner) then you haven't done a very good job of parenting.
I highly recommend Dr. Kimmel's book. If you are a worldly person... this book will not be of much help to you. However, if you are a Christian and are concerned about biblical parenting or you were a rebellious teenager years ago... this book is for you!
Absurd, irrational, insane, and vomit-worthy.......2006-12-16
I would like to know what this author is a "doctor" of? I find it somewhat surprising that someone can go through that much schooling without once encountering information which completely counters the absurd beliefs he holds. Rebellion is about releasing humanity from the clutches of social conditioning. We have obedience and conformity to authority smashed into our heads from the moments we're born, brainwashed by television and school to believe in our nation, economic system, and give up your life and time to work for someone else, lead an insignificant life destroying the Earth to die at the end of it all.
Religion is a product of modern society. Humans have existed for over 2 million years and we've existed in our current species, homo sapien sapien, for over 100,000 years. Religion is only 10,000 years old and Christianity is only 2000 years old. Were we seriously "living in sin" for 99.9% of human history? And even when you look at us now compared to the amount of people who do not fully embrace evangelical christianity, are 97% of us "living in sin?" Religion was created as an arm of the state to help the coersion of humans into obedient workers for an absurd society. This is not a dissenting opinion, it's mainstream anthropology. Religion is made to enforce authoritarian ideals and beat people into a point where they submit willingly and do not naturally rebel against the horrible force of law and morality (Carefully crafted to meet the needs of the power elite), continuously using the truncheon physically and psycologically to control us from reaching our true potentials of real freedom, autonomy, and liberation. By society's definition, freedom is the ability to do what the government deems unimportant.
If you want to help your kids, tell them to think for themselves, live free of all restrictions and resist any social force which limits their ability to exist freely. Tell them that one day we will tear all this down and dance on the ashes of churches, corporations, governments, and economies, and once again embrace our truest and most amazing desires in voluntary association with humans, non-humans, and the Earth.
If you want a wakeup call from the horrible and miserable daily reality authors like this seek to defend and enforce, read books by Derrick Jensen, Daniel Quinn, Crimethinc, and Raoul Vaneigem
Plant your rebellious seeds, revolt against the prevailing artificial reality, fight the revolution of everyday life!

Book Description
A cross-sectional view of Renaissance Florence through the story of one celebrated merchant family.
"Through vivid depiction of the worlds of banking and business in Florence and at the papal court in Rome, this book contributes greatly to our sense of the texture of Renaissance life. The authors bring to life the thoroughly three-dimensional men of the Spinelli family through judicious use of telling detail. It is a rare pleasure to read a study in which the getting of wealth and its spending, the two primary and intimately connected preoccupations of a Renaissance patrician, receive equal attention." Dale Kent, University of California, Riverside
The private archive of the Spinelli, acquired by Yale University's Beinecke Library in 1988, constitutes the largest fund of information about a Florentine family anywhere outside Italy. The Spinelli of Florence tells the story of these merchants and their ascent to social and economic prominence during the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries. This book gives an intimate portrait of daily lifethe worlds of papal finance, silk and wool manufacturing, and household affairsas recorded in letters and financial ledgers preserved for two hundred years since the extinction of the male line.
The fame of this family rests largely on the extraordinary success of one individual, Tommaso Spinelli, who broke into banking through the Alberti and Borromei organizations, later to serve as depository general under Pope Eugenius IV and financial officer to three subsequent popes. Tommaso sought to raise his status in society through ties of marriage and business rather than entering the political arena, which had led to the demise and exile of older, established Florentine families, notably the Peruzzi and Alberti. Like his contemporaries, Cosimo de'Medici, Giovanni Rucellai, and Francesco Sassetti, Tommaso poured his considerable wealth into the patronage of private palaces and villas in Rome and Florence, as well as through donations to the great Franciscan churce of Santa Croce. Despite his reputation for magnificence, it was Tommaso's obeisance to the codes of religious decorum and his adherence to older artistic traditions that allowed him to commemorate himself and his family without censure.
The authors of this collaborative study, an architectural historian and economic historian, add significantly to our knowledge of private and papal banking, wool and silk manufacturing, and patronage of the arts. The Spinelli of Florence is important for scholars of history, economic history, social history, and art history.
"By synthesizing the enormous cache of Spinelli documents, by publishing the most significant of those documents, and by setting these documentary tesserae into the larger historical mosaic of Renaissance Italy, the authors have provided a well-rounded picture of the rise and decline of a prominent Florentine patrician family." William E. Wallace, Washington University in St. Louis

More to the Story.......2007-05-08
Visiting Florence, the bulk of the Renaissance history of art and power concerns the Medici. Rightly so. But if you dig deeper, there are Palazzo's and artifacts of a complete society. Some were allies of the powerful like the Medici, some opponents, and most lived and prospered between. The wealthy merchant family, the Spinelli's, were one such family. "The Spinelli of Florence" fills in the details of wealthy merchant and banking families that triggered the renaissance from the dark ages, and returned civil interactions lost one thousand years before.
With examples of his generosity in Rome and Venice as well, Thomaso Spinelli's contributions to Florence's St. Croce are outlined in detail in "The Spinelli of Florence," with diagrams and photographs. A visit to the church using "The Spinelli of Florence" as a guide, converts the trip into a treasure hunt for the dozens and dozens of Spinelli "stemma," or Coat of Arms found on doorways and columns and alters and windows everywhere. But for one generic ID of a "stemma" on display in the museum and one ancient Latin inscription, untranslated, there is no on site mention of this family's obviously significant contribution to the church that contains Dante, Michelangelo, Machiavelli, Galileo, and a shrine to Florence Nightingale.
"The Spinelli of Florence" fills in some of the mystery of this society emerging from the dark ages, and gives referenced detail of Renaissance business interactions.
