DON'T TAKE IT WITH YOU,.......2000-10-26

There are good maps of the subway system in all Metro stations, this map is so big unfolded that it's very inconvenient. You might use it at home to get familiar with what's what, but it's not useful when you're actually on the subway system. better to buy a Good Guide book like Dorling Kindersley Travel Guides: Barcelona and Catalonia, it has a metro map in it, and lists subway stops for major tourist sites. Subway maps are available online from the Official Barcelona metro authority. Download a nice 8x11 map that will fit in your pocket. Free.

Great Guides.......2000-07-02

I ordered both Barcelona & Madrid before my May trip to Spain- saw them in the Magellan travel catalogue a couple weeks before I left town, and thought these might be helpful. As it was my first time in Spain and I speak only a little Spanish, they proved really helpful, much better than carrying around a guidebook.

For my recent trip to Europe I purchased this map and another for Prague after seeing the high praise for them. Was I disappointed! I was in Prague for four days and Barcelona three. These so called maps only confused me. I would not have purchased them if I had been able to preview them beforehand. Unless you already know the layout of the streets like the back of your hand, these maps will only serve to confuse. Many tourist kiosks sell much better maps with metro info and street layouts for less than a dollar. Again, unless you already know the city very well you would have to have another city map just to help you figure out Brein's map. After my miserable experience with these maps I can only say that the high praise I've seen for these maps is more than a little suspect. Calm down now, Polly, just changing your cage!

First part of this book is about reading financial statements. If you already know the statements, you don't need to read the first part. However, even if you can read the statements, the second part, case study, will be helpful to your real analysis.

I found the chapters are not very in detail. I was using it as the textbook and the lecture notes are way better. I read the book at the begginning but stopped in the middle as it doesn't really help. However, the end of chapter case studies are pretty good.

Useful if cumbersome.......2002-12-16

This review applies to the edition WITH CASES. This isn't recommended for anyone who is just starting out with choosing investments. Beginners might be better off with a more general overview of financial statement analysis (FSA) like Higgins' "Analysis of Financial Statements" or Fraser and Omriston's "Understanding Financial Statements".

This was one of two textbooks used in a financial statement analysis course I took for my MBA. Most chapters are down-to-earth and as a whole the book is well-written.

The other text we used was Penman's "Financial Statement Analysis and Security Valuation" which was also a great resource as far as gaining a basic understanding of the mechanics of financial statements and how to build a valuation model.

I contrast the two books because while Penman provides a run-down of several different models analysts can use (and does a good job of arguing for the Residual Income Model of valuation model as being the best), Palepu delves into the implications of companies' choices of accounting methods and provides more insight into what different kinds of businesses should look like in terms of their financial statements.

The cases at the end of each chapter add a lot of value to the text because they get students to focus on the specific issues detailed in each chapter. By picking apart different companies' financial statements we learned to use financial statements to assess the success or failure of companies' efforts to carry out their business strategies.

This is a required text at my school, but after having read the first 5 chapters there is almost nothing of value that I have read. I have spoken to several people that have used this text for the class in prior semesters and they told me that they had stopped reading it after the first several chapters also.

Excellent Capstone Book.......2000-10-12

This book is an excellent description of all the elements that would go into reviewing a potential investment opportunity. It is not a detailed book in one category, such as financial accounting, but it ties business strategy analysis, financial analysis, forecasting analysis, and valuation analysis together. Most other books focus on one area and don't tie all of these together well. This one takes you down the path to evaluating the opportunity to its fullest. It is an excellent capstone book after you have sifted through the details of strategy, finance, and accounting.

I never get tired of looking through this quilt book, and that's more than can be said about many others I own. But even beyond that, I have already made one quilt (Peek-a-Boo Baskets) from it, and have expectations that I will go on to make make two of the others as well. There are so many classics in here, you can hardly wait to try them. That's evidence that the book is truly inspirational!-- not only loving the pictures, but going on to actually make something from the book. The patterns and instructions were perfect.

Fabulous for 1930's prints .......2006-11-10

Like all quilters we need a cat's nine lives to do all we imagine inquilting. This book has great patterns for Aunty's, clothsline, feedsacks etc. If you like those prints this book is a must. I have quite a few books on quilting. I collect books like fabrics (not quite). I love my library of books and fabrics but I am fussy. Most of the books I have bought are thoise that have been given 5-4 star ratings when I am looking for specific content.

I greatly enjoyed this book........2007-04-18

I somehow "acquired" this book. (I don't remember where, when or how I acquired it.) I began browsing through it by just looking at the author's great pictures and reading the captions. I kept getting distracted because I would continue on and start reading the text also. Finally, I just gave up that route & read the entire book, cover to cover, text and captions together. Even though I don't have nearly the size to work with of most of the featured gardens, I still enjoyed the book. It gave me some useful, practical ideas to incorporate into my own outdoor space. I especially like the feel of most of the gardens that they just "happened", weren't really planned. (But of course they were planned out but they have that feel to them - more like walking into a meadow, "cultivated" wild areas & some wild "cultivated" areas.) Living in Montana, I enjoy picking up this book in the middle of our 6 month winter & dreaming of spring.

This book is excellent and loaded with common sense solutions for everyday behavior problems (and they work). I just took a Love & Logic class at our local YMCA and there wasn't anything "heavy handed" in the teaching materials we received or the videos of the authors we watched. A heavy dose of empathy is always used with their methods i.e the "love" part of love & logic.

As a parent and a school counselor I highly recommend this book and all the resources from Love and Logic! They are excellent tools for parents and teachers. Book Fails To Deliver Expected Quality.......2003-01-14

Having read several recommendations for "Retire Early," by John Wasik, as a good book on retirement issues, I as anxious to read it. Maybe it's like being told a movie is good before seeing it, then being disappointed, because after having read "Retire Early," I can't see what all the fuss is about.

The book's preface gets things off to a good start, as there is hardly a mention of how to accumulate or magnify one's nest egg and all that financial stuff that can be found in so many other "retirement" books. Here we get goodies like, "There is clearly another path that is more satisfying than the one we know," and "...for most of us, it's hard to break the chains that make us wage slaves." This is promising stuff.

But after a first chapter, which is also promising, the good stuff ends abruptly.

Unfortunately, the bulk of "Retire Early" is a compilation of all the financial basics you can get from a million other sources. And like so many of the "new" retirement books emerging, covering all the bases of financial advice seems to be the name of the game. Thus, we get advice on determining your nondiscretionary expenses, buying a car, using only one credit card, paying cash for meals, and on and on. And how about this for great advice: "For most people, real wealth is accumulated only if they spend a lot less than what they make." Now, there's something you can take to the bank with you on your next trip.

This stuff goes on for about 150 pages: All kinds of financial dribble that, like many other books of this nature, surely includes something to offer to most. But the point here is that I was told this was a really good book on retirement. When do I get to that? Surely there is more to retirement than all this financial stuff!

Bingo: Like an entirely different book, that last 30 pages are a hodgepodge of advice and information from nearly every conceivable angle other than financial. The problem is that it is too little too late, and much of it seems more appropriate to a "drop out" persona than a retiree. Some of it borders on just plain weird, like the author's suggestion to write down a list of one's failures in life. With this he says, "throw it in a drawer or file and review it later." Boy, that would be a valuable way to start your retirement plans. And how about his comparison of his "New Prosperity" with "Traditional Retirement?" Two of the entries here are "Chance to pursue passions" vs. "Chance to play golf all the time," and "Part of a global community" vs. "Member of gated community." Where are we going with this? Are we about to define "alternative retirement?"

Then, to end the rambling, non-financial stuff, there's a chapter on happiness, where we find quotes from 14 books in just five pages, as if the author did a quick skim from books off his favorite bookshelf.

I'm sorry, folks, I think the book is a mess, and I hope that this onslaught of retirement primers that start off with financial basics and all their inconsistencies, then end with rambling advice on how to be happy and fulfilled, soon will run their course.

I'll stick with my two old favorites: "The Joy of Not Working," by Zelinski, and "breaking the watch," by Savishinsky. While there will probably never be the perfect "retirement" book, I think those two are at least valuable contributions to the quest. I don't think this Wasik book holds a candle to either.

Simply Excellent.......2002-08-26

I loved this book so much I read it four times. Mr. Wasik takes the reader through all the steps neccessary to plan for an early retirement. The whole book is engrossing.
One thing is dated a bit though: I dont think that a technology mutual fund is the best bet right now...but I guess I could be wrong.
If you read this book you will figure out what you will do when do retire. This helps you to visualize more clearly and make you want to achieve your goal that much faster. It may also prevent much boredom in those years.
Like I said, this book is excellent and I read it four times.
The reference section is excellent. And I loved that Wasik covered the guy who runs the Retire Early Homepage.
Wasik makes a wonderful suggestion at the beginning of his book: Develop your skills, interests, and abilities, and have great faith in your dreams.

Covers all the bases..........2002-04-24

The financial planning in this book was excellent, but the added value to me was the advice Wasik provides on how to enjoy and prosper with early retirement. He spends several chapters discussing the value of work and personal pursuits. How to form a personal ecology that balances growth, spirituality, and life passions. He also recommends many intriguing titles for further exploration of the topic. I'm 48 and ready to move on, and this book was just what I was looking for.

Retire Early - and Live the Life You Want Now.......2000-06-17

I have read several books on this subject and all seem to have some overt or hidden agenda to preach. John Wasik presents a very doable plan with common sense steps for achieving your goal. No hidden agenda here, just solid advice and very practical bits of usable information. The financial plan in Retire Early is the most realistic I have seen in any book. This is not a read once and discard book. I use it as a reference guide and refer to it often.

Great for senior managers and executives.......2007-04-16

There aren't a lot of really good books about performance management, and performance measurement specifically, available yet. Too many of them are overly prescriptive in what to measure and very light on the details of how to measure (properly).

Because I specialise in performance measurement (and have done for over 14 years now), I've read quite a bit in this field and expected that Gary's book was going to be another one I'd refuse to recommend to my clients and subscribers.

But that's not what happened. I actually really enjoyed Gary's book, and support a lot of his philosophy about performance management. It's got to have strong alignment to strategy, it's got to be well thought through, it's not really about scorecards and technology, it's about making it easier to execute strategy, and it's about reliable and objective data.

It's a great book to give people that really need to take performance management more seriously, particularly senior managers and executives. It's not a book for the operational manager that is new to performance measurement (in this case try "Performance Scorecards" by Chang and Morgan).

Quantifiable vs. Qualifiable Performance Management Systems.......2005-03-23

I met Gary at a SAS conference the other day and we had a discussion on various issues. One of them being the query of why so many strategies to improve performance fail. Is it in the design or the execution of strategy? Gary popped the commonly accepted view that it is failure to execute otherwise sound strategies. And I replied, being a Strategy Consultant for over 16 years, that I haven't seen a sound strategy yet. After some debat we agreed that design and execution are equaly important.

This book is about execution of sound strategies using a series of quantifiable performance management methods. These are most popular in the Anglo-Saxon (US/UK) world and have been exported to the European mainland as well where they compete with qualifiable performance management systems. What is the difference? Quantifiable PMS' are based on measurement and consequences as strategy and tactics are imposed top-down. Qualifiable PMS' however are based upon a 'meeting-in-between' strategy process where productivity is boosted by inspiration, motivation and creativity. Employee involvement is the key. Instead of using fixed targets and bandwiths, one would use waypoints and scenario's, leaving the control of execution to operational teamleaders. (In W.W.II the Germans were 1.7 times more effective than the Allied forces using qualifiable techniques, even though they were outnumbered 3 to 1 by allied forces using quantifiable techniques). Qualifiable techniques are based on the assumption that operational conditions and short term objectives change all too rapidly for a rigid approach of planning & control. But if operational teamleaders understand the strategic and tactical objectives they can easily adapt to new conditions.

However Gary's latest book is the best book on quantifiable PMS' since Maximum Performance Management by Boyett & Conn (that actually tries to combine qualifiable and quantifiable techniques).

Business performance in context of today's environment.......2004-05-17

If execution is the goal these days, then this book brings an interesting perspective -- it's both big picture AND 'how to do it' at the same time. Cokins does a great job of putting the execution imperative into the larger context of "why." A good read for a reminder of basic performance management tools and for exploring how they work best in the context of today's tough business environment.

Great Graphics in Performance Management.......2004-05-16

Gary's book, on Performance Management published by Wiley, does an excellent job of pointing out there are no "Silver Bullets" or management tools that solve all problems. Combinations of the right techniques is an art. Bold graphics and flow charts in the book do much to stimulate the thought process. Business failure is often a result of inadequate performance management systems. Survival in today's global economy requires many of the better performance management techniques described in Gary's new book. A great addition to any business library.
