Useful and precise tool for molecular microbiologists .......2006-06-26
Very well presented book to get introduced into a great microbial group (Pseudomonas). It can be used as text book for undergraduate and PhD students as well as for researchers willing to get contact with one of the most useful bacterial genus. It can go very deep in the precise subject but allways easy to follow even without special background.
Highly recomended!.
Book Description
Each chapter explores a different island, offering background on its culture as well as important travel tips: time zone, language, transportation, lodging and camping options, and currency.

From OUTSIDE Magazine.......2001-11-22
"You haven't experienced the Caribbean until you know what an island tastes like, what it sounds like, what it smells like and how it feels--including its mud and thorns," writes M. Timothy O'Keefe in Caribbean Hiking, a new book detailing almost 400 hikes on 30 islands. Filled with regional maps, plus tips on gear and safety, this is the definitive guide for hot-weather adventurers interested in more than sunshine and beaches. (OUTSIDE Magazine, Dec. 2001, p. 124)

brought me to places I would never have known about.......2001-05-04
After having bought Adkins' "Appalachian Trail: A Visitor's Companion," I thought I would give his guide to walking the Caribbean a try. Thoroughly researched, the book directed me to some of the best walks and hikes I've ever had. Using it, my vacation became an exploration of isolated and uncrowded beaches, desert landscapes, wet rain forests and steaming volcanoes. As examples: on Dominica, I caught a glimpse of the endangered Sisserou parrot, on Saba I followed century-old step trails and in the British Virgin Islands walked completely around an island without seeing another person. If you are unsure of venturing out on your own, local guide companies are identified. For those who want less of an adventure or who only have a few hours (such as cruise ship passengers), Adkins has included walking tours of the historic port towns and botanical gardens. He even directs you to beaches where you and everyone else is permitted to enjoy the sun sans clothing. As far as I know, this is the only book dedicated exclusively to walking and hiking the islands.

Skimpy but Useful Beach Guide: Get a Used Copy.......2003-03-11
This is an un-ambitious guide book, but I found it useful on a return trip to this delightful island. Note to the editors: Why not print the driving directions accompanying Robert Stone's descriptions in a small font. Driving directions often take-up more space than the place descriptions. After all, St.Martin/St.Maarten is just thirty-seven square miles. Getting from one place to another is almost intuitive. One main road circles the island and the destination points are almost all on the perimeter. The map of the island on pages 8 and 9 is excellent and easy to refer to while caught in traffic slowdowns in the French city of Marigot or while waiting for the bridge to lower at Simpson Bay. PS: You didn't tell us about the traffic, the narrow roads, the goats, the quick turns on steep hills, and the uneven road quality. Note to the author: Your descriptions are skimpy. Why not give us a little more information, for example, about the flora and fauna. At Orient Beach I was surprised to find some beautiful cactus in bloom. And how about those different birds poking about the salt ponds and the frigate birds lazily circling high above. Your photographs are fine and relevant. You give us a list of taxi fares, but this information dates quickly. Most visitors using your book will rent cars. Maybe a list of annual celebrations such as the Heineken Regatta at Simpson Bay or Carnival in Marigot would be of greater value.
Run Away.......2002-06-29
Just to clarify - if you are cruise ship type or a resort compound type, this book is for you! For the rest of us that can find our way around a phone booth, forget this book.
Don't Bother.......2002-06-29
Well, no wonder this book was panned by others. Have been to St Martin before, by the way. A mere 48 pages, canned information that probably is in every version of this series. Yes, it directs one to some places, but no suprises, information probably available at any hotel or by asking a local. Like so many travel guides, it glamorises everything. Phillipsburg is a large tourist trap/cruise ship town - tee shirt/jewelry sort of place. Yet this book calls it quaint - give me a break! Run from this book or resell it as soon as possible.
Not worth the price.......2002-05-13
It took me about 20 minutes to read this book. It provides only the most basic information, of little value to the first-time visitor who would also like background and/or history of the area. It's no-nonsense-to-the-extreme style is boring, and paints a very dull picture of St. Martin. The only reason it deserves even one star is for the colorful photographs.
Day trips on St.Martin.......2001-05-24
I bought three books when planning my trip to St.Martin."Ulysses due south","St.Martin/St.Barts Alive" and this one.The first two are excellent sources of information."Day trips"offers only brief descriptions and directions, which is ok I guess, but you'll still need one of the other books(I preferred Ulysses)for a broader overview.I'll be going back, but"Day trips on St.Martin"won't be going with me.

CARIBBEAN AFOOT, A Walking & Hiking Guide.......2000-04-03
An incredibly useful, readable guide based on the author's personal experience. It's subjective, but the author explains why he liked or disliked the particular trail (or island, or city, or historical site or whatever!) Includes length of the hike, level of difficulty, time estimates and even info on what type of shoes one should have (sandles okay, walking shoes, serious hiking boots, etc.) The author highlights points of interest along the way, tidbits of history, and additional information about the area. It focuses on the trails, but also points out good snorkeling nearby and beaches to avoid due to dangerous undertows, etc. An informative introductory section covers interesting cultural considerations, plants and bugs to avoid, historical information and useful overall suggestions. The hikes are actually organized by island, and are very easy to follow. The only thing that would add to the enjoyment of this book would be color photos, but that would also make the book more expensive and probably heavier to carry! It's definately a useful book for anyone hoping to explore nature trails in the Caribbean!

Good, enertaining story, learned a little, but c'mon - $40 ?!?!.......2006-04-01
Why are people asking upwards of $40 for this book? You gotta be kidding me. $5 maybe.
I owned this book a couple of years ago when I lived in Calgary Alberta, home of the notorious Calgary Stock Exchange, and coincidentally the city Alexander Tadich, the author, lived in and the exchange he was working at and writing about.
(Before it was merged with the slighty better Vancouver Stock Exchange, these two exchanges were infamous for the numerous penny-stock scams involving small oil and mineral companies, that promoters would use to pump up hype, then dump and fleece "investors" who bought into the hype.)
Alexander Tadich was a broker on the Calgary Stock exchange, and met many of these shysters, whom he profiles as the "Rampaging Bulls" in this entertaining, comical book. If you are looking for hard facts, there are none here, but rather Tadich profiles how these promoters work, pumping and then dumping "exciting" companies with no financial value.
While regulators have moved to clean up those particular exchanges, the game continues on everywhere (ie. the pink sheets of unlisted companies) because there's always money to be made. (Rent the movie "Boiler Room" for another example.)
In fact, today in my mailbox I recieved an expensive 20 page color broadsheet promoting a company with a "Medical Breakthrough" in Stem Cells. Lots of quotes from Nobel Prize winners, etc. I just smiled to myself, recognizing the exact same game Tadich describes, and checked the fine print. Sure enough, a paid advertisement in cash and stock and "Shares of the company are thinly traded and 'Rampaging Bull's name' disposing of the shares 'may' adversely affect market price."
The game remains the same. If you want an entertaining story of how the game is played, read this book, but don't get fleeced for $40.
To save yourself getting fleeced in the market follow one simple rule I learned playing the penny stocks myself: NEVER BUY ANY COMPANY THAT IS LOSING MONEY. Most of these "hot" stocks have great prospects, the next cure for cancer (literally) or a diamond mine, and not a dollar in actual profits. Don't worry about "missing out" because a great comapany this year will continue to be a great company next year, and the year after and ten years on, giving you plenty of buying opportunities.
Good luck and good investing!
Read this book before you buy ANY penny stock.......2002-04-13
It could save you THOUSANDS ! I have watched hundreds of people lose money on scams, pump & dumps & promotions. This book tells you what is going on and why you will lose your money. Its VERY rare and expensive because of its value.

Applique .......2006-07-13
This is another excellent book to add to my clollection. Easy to follow
Charming, whimsical applique patterns--fantastic!.......2005-03-16
I have bought a number of Piece O'Cake books, and each one teaches me something new about applique. The thing I love about this one is the variety of designs. This book contains 100 charming applique patterns and five or six projects combining the blocks. Piece O'Cake originally published a book called "Dear Pin Pal" that had 50 applique designs. This new book combines those 50 designs and adds 50 new ones. Among others there are multiple flowers, trees, teapots, shoes, hats, houses, cats, chickens, and of course a piece of cake! If you have tried Becky and Linda's foolproof techniques taught in "The Applique Sampler" (something I highly recommend if you are serious about learning to applique) and you want to combine some applique blocks to make something all your own, this is the book for you. The chicken quilt is my favorite. It combines simple patchwork, fabulous fabric and color selection, and applique for a charming quilt. ***FYI There is a printing error. The blocks were printed at 4-1/4" inches instead of 5", which the body of the book says. This is important to know when enlarging designs to fit a specific space. The publisher has included a yellow sheet stuck to the inside cover explaining the error and how to enlarge the blocks at their printed size. Since these are applique patterns, the error does not detract from the usefulness or value of the book.***
Excellent! A+.......2004-08-23
This book has TONS of great patterns!
There are tons of flower patterns all are original ideas, never seen before flowers. There are also several houses, household items like a telephone, apron, chair, there are several butterfly and a dragonfly patterns and lots more. Along with all of these patterns, the authors show you several ideas for turning the patterns into quilts. An idea that I thought was great was that the authors created a redwork quilt using their applique patterns! If you have a tricky time with math this book makes it easy to enlarge or shrink the patterns you want to create. Also included are terrific directions easy enough for beginners.
This is an amazing collection of patterns by a couple of great women.

Book Description
English artist Barbara Hepworth (1903-1975) created a unique combination of subtropical garden and sculpture park at Trewyn in St. Ives-a haven of peace that acted as a showplace for her sculpture, a working environment, and an opportunity for Hepworth to pursue her other great love, gardening. This book is a beautiful record of the plants and sculptures at Trewyn throughout the seasons; it explores the evolution of the garden, its purpose, the placement of the works, and the relationship between Hepworth's abstract sculptures and the natural forms that surround them. With specially commissioned photographs taken in all seasons, two essays on Hepworth's work at Trewyn, and full descriptions of both plants and sculptures, this is a wonderful addition to the literature on St. Ives and on Barbara Hepworth.

Book Description
Wildly funny tales and practical wisdom from the authors and other womens breastfeeding experiencesto reassure readers that there is no one way to be a great breastfeeder In this perfect antidote to lactivist propaganda, award-winning writer Andy Steiner weaves together hysterical anecdotes and tips from the trenches to offer comfort and realistic advice to new nursing moms. Spilled Milk will help them understand that not all babies are going to get it right away, that breastfeeding can hurt even if youre doing it correctly, and that baring your breasts in public will actually become shamefully easy with time. Steiner writes: Looking back at my milky adventure, I realize now that while breastfeeding is a natural act, its also a difficult one. And after amassing an impressive collection of how-to breastfeeding books, nipple shields, lactation consultants, breast pumps, nursing bras, storage bags, and wicked breast infections, I can only say that the one thing that was missing from the experience was a book that could tell mein a casual, non-preachy tonethat I wasnt alone, that everything was going to be okay. That is the book that Steiner has written. Her fresh viewpoint; casual, girlfriend-to-girlfriend advice; and the books great price make Spilled Milk the ultimate shower gift for moms-to-be.
Customer Reviews:
Yet another great breast feeding book!.......2006-12-31
I totally reccomend this book to anyone wanting to read about breast feeding and be amused doing so. She has a way of making you the reader understand that it's ok not to be perfect at it and that everyone can learn how to be a successful breast feeder.
Tiresome fluff.......2006-06-14
I disliked this book for the same reason that I disliked the collection of essays in the "Mommy Wars," edited by Leslie Morgan Steiner. Both books over-represent women who work in the publishing field (journalists, columnists, editors, etc). There is a certain tone that columnists seem to share today and it gets tiresome to me. There were so many cute and sassy anecdotes that had nothing I could truly relate to or learn from. Just lots of fluff strung together by the editor. My recommendation is to find stories about breastfeeding from a wider range of women through bloggs or just talk to the woman around you.
Great book for first-time breastfeeding moms!.......2006-01-03
While my baby isn't due for another 3 months yet, I plan to breastfeed and am looking for all the helpful advice I can get. This book provides the most common-sense and enjoyable reading I've found on the complicated subject of breastfeeding. It is very funny and "down to earth." As someone who is trying my best to prepare myself for motherhood and is also an admitted perfectionist about many things, I needed a book like this to help me keep everything in perspective. Steiner is very reassuring and encouraging and offers a lot more helpful, practical advice than many of the other breastfeeding books out there. Plus she provides a great bibliography at the end for further reading! I know I will be rereading this book when my baby is born and I would highly recommend it to other new mothers.
Just what I needed!.......2005-11-07
As a new mother, I purchased this book because one of the advertisements stated 'it is for those of us who think we are doing it (breastfeeding) wrong, which is all of us.' After I received the book, I couldn't put it down and once finished, I started it over again and again. Yes, I am reading it for the third time now. It is extremely motivating and forgiving. You usually see one or the other, motivating or forgiving, but in this case you got both perspectives. The book is definitely pro-breastfeeding, but it also provides testimonials of women who for one reason or another were unable to breastfeed and it shows that is ok too. I was touched by the "weaning" chapter with all the love and sweetness only us mothers will understand. I already bought two more copies and sent them to new mothers. The book really made me feel lucky and special to breastfeed my baby.
Much-needed, well done, and a wonderful read.......2005-09-30
Why aren't there more books on breastfeeding? Spilled Milk fills a baffling literary gap. Steiner writes beautifully and inclusively about a complicated, highly personal subject. Mothering (parenting) infants and small children can be isolating and anxiety provoking and this book reduces those problems. I have given it as a gift to 2 new moms.
Book Description
World-renowned textile designer and weaver Jack Lenor Larsen reflects on his extraordinary life and career in this beautifully illustrated memoir. From the postwar design scene to anecdotes about his collaborators I.M. Pei, Louis Kahn, and Edward Larrabee Jones, this is a fascinating account by a man whose name is now synonymous with exquisite woven fabrics. Larsen is also an accomplished gardener and garden designer, a tireless traveler, a patron of younger artists, and an avid collector of crafts from around the world.

What about His American service?.......2007-06-28
This book is interesting because O'Sullivan Burke's early life in Ireland and South America are revealed in detail. Howeever O'S Burke in the 15th NY Engineers and as a key member of the Fenian Brotherhood in America are hardly touched. In fact O'Sullivan Burke is identified as a member of the Brother Shearer's Circle in New York--actually that was Lt. Colonel Dennis Burke, 88th NY. O'Sullivan Burke was active with the Washington, D.C. Circle---since he was stationed at the Navy Yard for over a year. Also there is no mention of his relationship with Michael O'Brien, Manchester Martyr.
