then this is a book you should have a look at. The instructions to draw your own feathers and tips on how to quilt them are plenty in this book. There are lots of examples and I tend to use these as opposed to drawing my own. There is something for all types of quilts, I machine quilt my quilts and have found these designs easy to use.

Useful for hand- or machine-quilting.......2006-07-24

Some quilting books have nifty-looking designs that are oddly shaped or inappropriate; I've never felt the desire to quilt something in the shape of a duck, even if it's a *pretty* duck. Or they're complicated (I can't trace this design, much less sew it). Or you can't figure out how to follow the design to quilt it (you want me to pick up the needle *how* many times?).

Instead, Judy Allen introduces you to the techniques of drawing your own feather designs, and gives lots of examples. Frankly, there are so many examples, and they're all so *nice*, that I've never needed to learn the full techniques to create my own.

It isn't that I think the designs in this book are absolutely stunning, per se... but I've realized that I almost always wind up using a design from Allen's book. From simple to fussy, she has dozens of designs with feathers, from hearts to circles to borders. I don't say "Wow," a lot, but I find that I do say, "That one would fit right here."

The sizes are also reasonable, and the book lays out almost flat. While, of course, you can always photocopy to resize a quilting design, I've found that most of the examples are just-about-right for a typical block.

If you love to hand quilt like I do, then this is a book that you will want to add to you collection:) It will enable you to draw any kind of feather design and fill any size space with appropriate size patterns. There are great ideas for blocks, sashing and corner options. These patterns are wonderful because they can be quilted by hand(which I luv), but also domestic sewing machine, and home quilting system or professional quilting machine. This book has something for all levels of quilters.

The book is very easy to follow. It starts out with basic information and helps the reader follow along as more details are added. I thought it was a very good introduction to understanding Feng Shui.

it's not your average McFeng Shui...and that's a good thing!.......2006-09-14

this book is wonderful. although i'm usually wary of books that seem to exist solely for the purpose of dumbing down a complex subject, this book provides all the background knowledge necessary to understand the feng shui approach. if you're looking for a quick-and-easy way to apply feng shui to your home/office/life, this is not the book for you. if you have an open mind and would like to understand the philosophy of feng shuit, then is book is a fabulous introduction. the authors freely admit they didn't write this book to perpetuate the "McFeng Shui" junk that's rampant out there. however, they categorize areas into 'the least you need to know' areas to understand how to apply feng shui concepts.

initially i was irritated flipping through the first half of the book, becuase what i wanted to do was apply feng shui to my new home which is under construction. however, i felt i should at least give the book a chance and sat down to absorb the message the authors were getting across. although applying feng shui principles doesn't start until two thirds of the way into the book, the knowledge i've obtained in reading the background information makes me much more comfortable that i'm 1) accurately determining the current feng shui so that i can 2) select the accurate remedy to fix negative qi. in my opinion, there's nothing worse than spending the time to learn and apply feng shui principles only to find out that i've got it all wrong!

I had hoped that a book titled 'complete idiots guide to feng shui' would do all it could to simplify and explain the practice. I was very disappointed in this book, which goes into dreadfuly complex details about feng shui rather than guide you through it's practical application in your own home. Oh well. I don't recommend buying this book.

Not That Helpful.......2006-07-22

This is a book of 'technical' presentations of Feng Shui. It lacks the 'how to' of using Feng Shui in our lives. It skips past the meaningful ways to apply all that technical information into practical applications. A waste of money and time... there are much better choices than this book.

The all time best Intro to Feng Shui book!.......2005-11-15

The title is deceptive... this is really not the 'idiot's version'. It is a comprehensive book that covers the history, the reason for, the traditional methods of Feng Shui in an easy to understand format(this is relative... it's not 'easy' as in, paint this wall red and put a lucky charm on that door. Feng Shui is a complex art/science).

The book is huge... and not nearly as comprehensive as I hoped. If you ever looked at a real Chinese version, keeping in mind that each entire Chinese WORD is 1 letter in size, the book I saw was 6" thick, on onionskin paper around 14" x 12" in size. No kidding.

I want the Encyclopedia Brittanica version, but alas, I have to keep adding to my collection of Feng Shui books, bearing with repetition after repetition of Feng Shui Introduction first.

This is hands down the best 'first book' you can buy, and I refer to it more than any other book.
