Product Description
The nutrient-rich waters off the Northern California coast support a kaleidoscope of colourful fish and invertebrates sheltered by dense kelp forests, underwater canyons, inshore pinnacle and offshore rocky reefs. Playful sea lions, harbor seals and sea otters are just a few of the other attractions that divers regularly enjoy. This book describes 46 of the best scuba and free-diving sites throughout Central and Northern California - including Monterey Bay, Carmel Bay, and the Big Sur, Sonoma and Mendocino coasts - with full-color photos throughout.

Snorkeling Guide? This has nothing to do with Snorkeling.......2002-04-25
I bought this book and the Diving and Snorkeling Guide to the Cayman Islands sight unseen. Ususaly Lonely Planet has great books but not this time. This is a dive guide, not a snorkeling guide. Putting Snorkeling into the title is a blatent attempt to sell more books. There is almost no info about where to snorkel in Monterey or Northern California. Instead, the info is just about diving. Info about diving a site that is in 75 feet (etc..) of water has nothing to do with being able to snorkel it.
Good general reference, locals and tourists........2001-10-29
This is a great overview of the most popular Monterey/Carmel dives, with accurate dive information/directions and good guidance regarding levels of expertise. I've sent this to "warm-water-only" diver friends and made a few converts -- it's not shy about the cold water (easily dealt with by proper gear), but shows off the majesty of kelp beds and the delights of diving with seals, sea lions and sea otters to advantage.
More experienced buddies who thought they knew it all about particular dives have been skeptical watching me (a relative novice) pull this out of my bag, but after review commented that it's an excellent resource for dive planning (e.g., depths, navigation, surge, what to look for). For a tourist to the area wanting to get in a bit of diving, a great resource to supplement a local guide. For us locals, a nice addition to word-of-mouth, an end to playing "guess the species," and a great resource when arguing about where to dive next time .
A great resource for diving in Monterey/North Coast.......2001-05-19
I regularly dive the monterey area and I was looking for more information about the area, and the north coast. This book was great! Beautiful pictures and great information. The book works very well for deciding on a place to dive, and is a great reference for finding new dive sites.

Great guide to dive sites all along Northern California........1998-07-31
The book provides an excellent guide to dive sites from Monterey Bay northward to the mouth of the Russian River. Each dive site includes recommendations for diver ability (novice to advanced), descriptions of entries and exits, and details of the surf, water and environmental conditions. It also includes such important issues as parking, legal (and illegal) places to unload equipment and don gear, and nearby dive stores.
The beautiful photos are also useful for sharing the diving experience with non-divers!

Outsiders have long suspected that Wall Street is nothing more than a real-life Disneyland, where dreams are made and hopes are dashed with the speed of light and the randomness of lightning. By chronicling the rarely publicized, behind-the-scenes reality of some of its most incredible incidents and personalities, CNBC senior anchor Ron Insana brings this perception to life in Traders' Tales: A Chronicle of Wall Street Myths, Legends and Outright Lies. Read this collection of stories about the men and women who have won big and lost bigger, and never think about traders and their lives in the same way again.
Book Description
Acclaim for Trader's Tales
"I have rarely gone through a day without hearing a joke about Wall Street. Ron Insana captures the essence of the culture that creates those jokes with one hilarious tale after another. This book is great fun." -Stanley Druckenmiller Managing Director, Soros Fund Management.
"Ribald tales and outrageous jokes are as much a part of Wall Street as subordinated debentures, and Ron Insana has sifted through years of financial lore to collect the best of them. A funny, funny book, certain to draw a chuckle and a wry smile of recognition from even the stiffest Masters of the Universe." -Bryan Burrough Coauthor, Barbarians at the Gate.
"You can't beat Wall Street for witty and outrageous behavior. Ron Insana captures it." -Michael Steinhardt Managing Partner, Steinhardt Partners.
"Having worked on Wall Street for 20 years, I thought I had heard and seen it all. The secrets revealed in this book, however, are absolutely shocking." -Elaine Garzarelli Director, Garzarelli Capital, Inc.
"Wall Street has lots of traders' tales which bring us insight into the lighter side of our business. This book should bring fun for us all." -Mario Gabelli Chairman, Gabelli Funds, Inc.
Customer Reviews:
rate the book on what it really is--a storybook.......2003-08-21
I can't understand why this book gets so many bad reviews. This book is not a book of interviews, a book on fundamental or technical analysis, a book about Warren Buffet or Peter Lynch's investing styles, or a book about timing the market. This is a storybook, plain and simple. And it is a good one at that. Because I'm very interested in the market I purchased this book expecting exactly what I got. Tongue-in-cheek stories from the trading floor. And despite what other reviewers say, there is plenty to be learned from this work. The section about Donald Trump getting sued was great. The Donald got exactly, just exactly, what he deserved. I recommend this book to anyone who wants to learn about the market from a personal and less technical perspective. I was tempted to forgo purchasing this book altogether after reading it's miserable reviews. But because I consider myself a contrarian investor, I thought what the hey and bought the book. And I'm glad I did.
Stories aren't interesting (what's so incredible?).......2003-02-17
Ron Insana is a fine CNBC commentator who has been instrumental in turning what had long been characterized as dry news for a select few into witty and insightful stock market reporting with mass market appeal. His first book, "Traders' Tales" tries to wow the reader with a bunch of gee-whiz stories, but there's just not much to impress in the way of secrets, outrage, shock value . . . whatever.
After being involved with the stock market for twenty years (the last fifteen as a professional), and thus being familiar with many names of those involved in the stories recounted by Mr. Insana, I still didn't find any story "tantalizing" or "shocking." Heck, anyone who's ever played on a sports team or in a rock 'n' roll band during high school could probably come up with ten crazier stories for every one in this book. Instead, I thought the more interesting reading was in the chapters that gave historical perspective to the careers of Muriel Siebert, Ron Baron, Peter Lynch, and Jimmy Rogers, among others. Everything else was pretty dull.
There's a tad too much explaining about market movement, stock/option price fluctuation, trading floor characteristics (did you know that tons of money can be made or lost very rapidly?), chart patterns, etc., so I'm thinking that those familiar with stock and bond investing might wind up somewhat bored. Keep in mind, Mr. Insana was writing this in late-1995, way before many new investors were "seasoned" by the boom/bust in tech stocks, so some consideration of the time frame is warranted.
Overall, "Traders' Tales" might have mild appeal either to someone who has no experience with the stock markets, or to investors who might want to learn what all the market gurus we follow were doing decades ago.
A half-hearted attempt at best.......2001-11-28
What looked to be a promising collection of tales from the street fizzled almost from the start. Fairly lame stories, told with almost no writing style or flair whatsoever. And to top it all off, no appearance of editing at all. References made to "Truman winning the election of 1946" (he beat Dewey in '48) and "Home Depot, the home office supply store" (that would be Office Depot). I felt ripped off, and I got it from the Library! Save your money and re-read Liar's Poker or A Piece of the Action.
It's not interesting, nor funny, nor a book of tales, nor.........2001-06-25
I had been misled by the "advance acclaim" for the author by Stanley Druckenmiller and Michael Steinhardt. I really doubt whether they had finished the book at all. The book is so boring and full of dull short stories of a mixed variety that takes you nowhere and gives you no fun nor knowledge. Even worse, the story telling skill is really bad. In a word, dont waste your time and money on it.
Just a bad book.......2001-05-25
The book is of little value to anyone whether you are a professional investor or an amateur. Most of the stories are bland and simply not funny nor do they provide any insight whatsoever into the world of Wall Street. Bottom line: don't waste your time and money on this book.

Herb Gardens at Their Very Best.......2001-07-28
What do Elton John and The Jacksonville Garden Club in Florida have in common?
They both like plants and Rosemary Verey's Garden Designs. This book contains more than 25 of her designs.
From knots to plots and every size in between, Rosemary Verey has created a garden for it. Each garden design is accompanied by color photos, plant listings and descriptions as well as a watercolor layout. What I really like about the book is how many of the plants are herbs. Herbs are such a natural choice for the landscape because they bring life and use to the garden. I particularly liked her Outdoor Dining Room Garden. In a small space, she was able to create a relaxing atmosphere capable of hosting leisurely lunches or sumptuous suppers both enhanced by the wonders of plants.
Should be called "Great" Planting Plans.......2000-04-19
Rosemary Verey successfully explains years of gardening experience in yet another beautifully illustrated and informative book. She includes site photos, watercolor plans, and detailed but not overly exhaustive explanations and descriptions to both enchant and educate the reader. Verey's many gardens include projects of various sizes, styles, and intentions presented like a relaxing yet stimulating informal discussion. The author makes it easy to appreciate a myriad of garden design concepts including site issues, scale, and balance and she discusses her experience on the 'how and why' of color, texture, placement, flowering sequence, etc. I find myself browsing this book over and over, yet it always remains fresh with always more to appreciate and learn.
Book Description
One of the world's foremost garden designers shares some of her successful ideas.
Customer Reviews:
One of the best garden design books out there.......2006-03-19
"Garden Plans" is one of the two most inspiring garden plan books on the market (the other is Barbara Damrosch's "Theme Gardens"). Ms. Verey has an amazing eye for color and design, and takes the readers through a wide variety of her gardens. My very favorite is the ornamental vegetable garden.
Ms. Verey discusses 23 of her gardens at various lengths. A few of her plans only hava page or two of discussion, but most include a description of the entire process: the site, the client's needs, and Ms. Verey's steps to creating the perfect garden.
Though specific plants are mentioned in the designs, this isn't a how-to-garden book. Instead it is a how-to-plan book, filled with beautiful illustration. The plans themselves are colorfully painted, to scale, and each garden has plenty of pictures of it in full bloom.
It's also a fun book because most of her clients are royalty or celebreties, and it's interesting to get a peek at their personal gardens: Elton John's is particularly georgous.
Book Description
Nationally recognized parenting expert--and host of her own public radio show--Bobbi Conner identifies and explains the most important ingredients every child needs to grow and thrive. Conner helps parents understand the emotional, intellectual, physical and social context of their children's actions, then offers priceless everyday opportunities for developing the positive skills every parent wants their children to have.
From teaching curiosity and creativity to helping kids discover courage, this book covers many of parents' key concerns. Other sections include: problem-solving and decision-making skills, hope and optimism, learning to communicate, the role of competition, coping with stress, learning respect and more.
Thoroughly researched and written with clarity and compassion, this book is a bible of tried-and-true parenting advice and activities. In addition, it is interspersed with quotations from the national parenting experts featured on Conner's public radio program, The Parent's Journal, including Mary Pipher, Bob Keeshan, T. Berry Brazelton, Marian Wright Edelman and many more.
Customer Reviews:
Great book.......2007-10-10
This is a GREAT book. I HIGHLY recommend it. One of the best parenting books I have read.
A Book Brimming With Practical Ideas.......2001-04-10
This book should be on the nightstand of every parent. It helps you fathom the mysteries of why children behave in certain ways and what your role should be in guiding them at every age level from babies to young teenagers. It tells you step by step how to create a secure home environment for a young child and how to help an older one cope with school, peer relationships, stress, competition and all the other challenges of growing up. Although the author provides plenty of sensible advice herself, she's also picked the brains of many of the country's leading child development experts for their views which are found in boxes scattered throughout the book. I especially liked the way Conner didn't emphasize theory so much as the practical things parents can do. The book is packed with specific information and literally hundreds of tips, ideas and teachable moments. I highly recommend it.

Book Description
Jack B. Yeats is probably the greatest painter Ireland has ever produced, although he is often overshadowed somewhat by his more famous brother, the poet W. B. Yeats. First published to great acclaim in 1993, this is one of very few popular books on Yeat's work. With more than 100 colour plates and 175 black and white illustrations, it is an authoritative and glorious appreciation of Yeats's vast and varied output.
Customer Reviews:
Very disappointing illustrations.......2000-12-12
The majority of the illustrations in this book are in black and white, and those in color are consistently very muddy reproductions. Therefore, if you are tempted to buy this book because you are interested in the looking at Yeats's painting rather than in the extensive biographical and critical text, this book is quite likely to disappoint - and particularly at the price. If you are familar with the catalog that was part of the Centenary Exhibition of his paintings and drawings you will know that they can be reproduced with stunning effect.

The Aran Islands (Penguin Twentieth Century Classics)
ASIN: 1897959451 |
Book Description
This book is an overlooked masterpiece by one of Ireland's best-loved writers. In it Synge captured the idiosyncracies of everyday speech better, perhaps, than any other Irish writer, while his eye caught the details of a way of life that has long since disappeared. First published in 1910, it is now available as a paperback for the first time, complete with the evocative illustrations by Jack B. Yeats-universally regarded as twentieth-century Ireland's greatest painter.
Customer Reviews:
An excellent social history guide of early 1900s Ireland.......2006-07-28
This is a well-balanced and interesting book on the state of life in rural Ireland in the early 1900s. Mr. Synge and his illustrator, Mr. Jack B. Yeats travel through 3 counties, living off the hospitality of local residents. Mr. Synge seems to be great at eliciting views from everyone he meets. He has much knowledge of the governmental agencies that attempt to alleviate some of the worst hardships of the poorest counties in Ireland. He presents a very balanced view of the results of these efforts. In the process, he relates some great stories given him by his hosts. You can get a glimpse of some of the archaic speech patterns of the the times. I highly recommend this to anyone interested in social history. The artwork is also great.
