Customer Reviews:
bangkok is all about night life.......2002-05-30
If there is one city I recommend for night life its BKK. The place just doesnt go to sleep. Buzz buzz buzz. People up at all hours eating and drinking, noodle carts, flower markets by the river (which I found when I read about it in the groovy map by the way), dance clubs, barsm go-go joints, etc. Not for the faint of heart although I guess people like that can still find stuff to do if they are into serious shopping and temples...This map was by far the best one that I bought as its alot more reader friendly and down to earth. ...Pretty funny. Lots of stuff I didnt find in LP. Def. recommend it. I also bought the groovy chiang mai - not as comprehensive, but BKK has alot more going for it in the night life dept. anyway.

Great but buy the new edition (orange cover)!.......2007-09-26
I just moved to Bangkok and have found this map so immensely handy that I had to get another one (my husband kept stealing our shared copy!) Now we have copies of both this edition and the updated one. While this is great, do yourself a favor and get the updated on with the sunset photo on the cover.
Very Practical-Thai & English written locations great for cabs.......2006-03-16
I visited Thailand for the first time last year. My first night there, I took a cab from Bangkok, followed the tout cabdrivers advice to to go to a certain hotel "bad mistake". I stayed at an awful, expensive, and overpriced excuse for a room. I was so disgusted by this experience that I left for Pattaya the next day. Pattaya was very nice, but I think I missed out on the true Bangkok experience. I bought this guide before I go on my trip this year, and I am very impressed with it. It has many words of wisdom from an experienced traveler. I enjoy his sense of humor and fun practical map. The graphics are excellent and having locations written in Thai as well as English will increase your chance of getting to your destination. Two thumbs up!!!
practical+informative.......2005-09-15
This map has all the necessary highlights on sights, restaurants and hotels. The map is laminated so it can take alot of abuse during your travel. It really prepares one well prior to the visit. One of the best maps I have ever used.
Get Groovy IN Bangkok !.......2005-08-17
I bought this map and guide expecting it to be a cute add-on and I didnt think I would actually use it for real info on my trip to Bangkok. BUT not so! I used this Groovy Guide way more than the guidebook I brought with me. Its packed full of really good info about temples, places to visit, what to avoid (scams and fake tour guides, gem scams and tuk-tuk scmas) what to defeinitely do (best views, best river trips, best massages) and what to eat (amazing street food!!) I totally used this map to bits for my stay and was worth every cent. I would say it was way better than the other guide books and stuff I had and didnt really use. The maps is easy to carry around with you. Highly recommend.
Cool guide for funky traveler!.......2005-08-09
I liked this cool and hip guide which told me where to go for bars and clubs. I also liked the fact they had a gay section. The map is laminated so it wont tear or get wet. It is pretty cool and you wont feel dumb carrying it around with you as you tour the city.
Book Description
In the tradition of his acclaimed books Eyewitness to America and Eyewitness to the American West, David Colbert draws on diaries, private letters, memoirs, and reportage to bring the 400 year history of the world’s most famous street to life in the words of the people whose lives were deeply entwined in Wall Street’s performance. Eyewitness to Wall Street illuminates how the getting and spending of Wall Street is inextricably linked with America’s national character.
From our first IPO–the European fund-raising that launched America’s colonization–through today’s mass obsession with the Dow and Nasdaq, Eyewitness to Wall Street brims with accounts from people who saw it happen–poets and speculators, patriots and criminals, politicians and reporters–including Daniel Defoe, Mark Twain, Franklin D. Roosevelt, Andrew Carnegie, Muriel Siebert, Warren Buffet, Connie Bruck, Christopher Buckley and Michael Lewis. Their accounts reveal the myriad ways that Wall Street has served not only as the epicenter of American finance but as a major factor in the larger events of American history, from the way Wall Street traders saved the Continental Army from bankruptcy and helped finance the Union during the Civil War to how Americans were suckered by the bull market of early 1929, and struggled through the rebuilding of modern Wall Street.
More than half of the book is devoted to the contemporary era, defined by the “greed is good” 1980s, the bull market 1990s, and the Internet millionaires and inflated markets of the twenty-first century's beginning. But whether it’s a description of how Wall Street took its name from a wall of logs in New Amsterdam or a look at our present-day market mania, the eyewitnesses collected here share a knack for revealing the human side of business.
Through the firsthand reports of those who experienced the manias, panics and crashes, Eyewitness to Wall Street is a colorful, dramatic and revealing work of popular history.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent! A must read for any investor.......2003-07-01
I completed this 369 page "story book" in two days. It had been so interesting that I just could not put it down.
It's no exaggeration to regard it as a story book. Somehow the reality is more harsh and crueler than fictitious TV drama and movies, and the history of the investment world is surely no exception.
Back to the book. This is in fact an excellent collection of writings from books, journals amd newspapers of different witnesses to the author's selection of major debacles of the past four centuries. There are twelve parts of unequal period, with a timeline of critical incidents in the beginning of each part, followed by selected witness reports as mentioned above. Certainly, not everything could be accounted detailedly (so I would like to recommend "Devil Take the Hindmost: A History of Financial Speculation by Edward Chancellor", a book that dug deeper but not as wide) but readers certainly would have a very correct idea of what went wrong.
As a CFA charterholder (not yet, passed all three levels of exam but not paid the fees), I strongly recommend AIMR to put this book into the required list of reading to warn its members of the limitation of the financial techniques or theories or calculations or integrity stuff we try to preach. Anyway, a must read for anyone, especially serious players!
p.s. One minor drawback: Soros was not there. He should have been.
see the brilliance of wall street's greats.......2002-01-27
this book gives you a window look into the brilliance of wall streets finest players , as well as the big scammers. this book gave me a better knowledge of how the market works and how the economic cycle is always repeating itself. it gave you a nice history into how wall street was established and how it evolved into the market it is today.
Highly Recommended!.......2001-11-16
Editor David Colbert collected a multitude of printed source material - diaries, private letters, memoirs and articles - that spans 400 years, and, as the title promises, provides plenty of accounts from eyewitnesses to Wall Street. Organized chronologically, the book also includes Colbert's timelines and his original introductions for each piece. Divided into sections that reflect every era, the book is an insightful and often hilarious romp through financial history. We [...] recommend this book to all readers - there's something here for everyone, even if you don't think you give a hoot about the stock market. Colbert's collection is a sweeping, unusual look at social, economic, political and cultural history.
Terrific -- very enjoyable and informative.......2001-09-26
I don't work in finance, but I found Eyewitness to Wall Street very enjoyable and informative. It's a sweep of stories that captures the impact of Wall Street over the centuries -- and this subject seems even more relevant after the terrorist attacks that attempted to end the Street's intense vitality. This book does a wonderful job of defining and explaining, and thoughtfully celebrating, that vitality.

Provides color photos & directions for a range of fountains.......2001-08-08
Paris Mannion's Create Your Own Tabletop Fountains (1-58180-103-3, $24.99) provides a fine guide to creating the fountains which have become so popular in hardware and houseware stores. From supplies and materials to crafting 15 selected fountains using shells to pots, this provides color photos and directions for a range of fountains.
Create Your Own Tabletop Fountain.......2001-05-09
Wow! Lots of great info and imaginative projects in gorgeous color layout. The feng shui cures, tips on hiding the cord, and how to drill slate were particularly helpful to me. I got a noisy pump, and this book tells ways to make it operate quietly! It answered all my questions on fountain plants, how to turn the fountain off and on without getting under the couch, where to get decorating accents, and how to water seal and patch clay pots.
The illustrated projects make it so easy to get the results I want. I am very happy with my purchase and feel like I know the insiders' secrets.
Awesome fountains!.......2001-05-08
I compared several fountain making books, and found this one to have the most complete information and the best instructions. The step by step photos are better than the drawn diagrams found in other books, because they tell the exact sequence of events in building a tabletop fountain. I also found this book to have the most useable projects ( I was not interested in outdoor fountains and the plumbing challenges inherent in making them). I have already made 3 awesome fountains, the most ambitious being the copper leaf fountain, which sounds like music and drowns out the noise of traffic that I used to hear in my living room. I had no trouble putting it together following the photos and directions. When it splashed too much, I found the remedy in the book, too. The author's lists are amusing and informative (example: 10 ways to hide the cord, how to quiet noisy pumps, and 10 ways to know you need "fountains anonymous") . The book describes a fountain as an "oasis connecting you to nature." That pretty much sums up my feeling when I go home after a busy day and hear throughout my house the endless sound of falling water.Because the projects vary in difficulty, I would highly recommend this book, no matter how much fountain building experience you've had.
Great instructions and photos!.......2001-03-18
If you've read the other books by Paris, you know that they are filled with information. Paris thoroughly researches her subjects and when you've finished reading, you feel like you've been given an education. There are from one to four outstanding, detailed color pictures on every page. The fountains range from very simple to advanced in degree of difficulty in assembly. The instructions, like the photos, are highly detailed. The book will make an excellent gift for anyone interested in fountains.

Book Description
Today's "formal garden" features an exciting combination of elegant and romantic elements. These 12 richly illustrated arrangements, created by a leading designer, feature "imaginative symmetry"--the free planting of plants within a symmetrical framework. The result: a dynamic blend of rustic and urban, open and hidden styles. Adapt the author's plans and planting schemes, choosing from many styles of hedges, herbaceous borders, terraces, water features, kitchen gardens, pergolas, to create a classic garden all your own.
Book Description
From the Japanese Zen Garden to André Le Notre's Versailles, the?history of landscape reveals that every garden embodies a philosophy.?Focusing on the metaphysics, aesthetics, and theology of the seventeenth?century, Allen Weiss's analysis offers new insight into the major gardens?of this period: Vaux-le-Vicomte, Chantilly, and Versailles.?
?From the Meditations of Descartes and Pascal's?Pensés, to the intrigues of court politics, Weiss reveals?how the structure of these gardens reflects -- sometimes literally -- the?power of Louis XIV, the relationship between God, King, sun, and infinity,?and the new science of optics. Weiss's sophisticated yet highly readable?text combines contemporary theory with a careful historical reading. He?gives us a richer understanding of gardens than allowed in more?traditional formal and stylistic analyses.
Customer Reviews:
A Paradigm.......2006-10-07
What would you rather do, talk about making love, or make love? If your answer is the former, then (A) please don't bother reading on, and (B) good luck! Talking about making love makes absolutely no sense whatsoever. It's absurd! The same holds true of art. Oh yes, there are those movie critics, art critics, music and CD critics, you know, all those people who think that their opinion matters. (What's worse, of course, is to write a critique of a critique as I'm doing here [lol].) Think about it in practical terms: out of a population of six billion people, why would you rely on the opinion of ONE human being? That makes no sense whatsoever. If you wanted some sort of opinion that was worth a hoot, wouldn't you ask more than one person? Or even more importantly, why wouldn't you trust your OWN judgment instead of somebody else's? Makes no sense to me whatsoever! Unlike other disciplines -- politics, religion, sports, etc. -- there is no "middle man" in the arts: there is no politician, no priest, no referee. ONLY in the arts do you have a direct relationship between the two parties, that being the art object -- the particular work of art -- and the "receiver" who "interacts" with it -- the listener, the viewer, the reader, etc. What a unique, simple yet powerful relationship and process! So, IF you are going to write about art, you better do it right: you better speak the truth by examining the subject methodically. And this is exactly what Mr. Allen S. Weiss has done in his "Mirrors of Infinity: The French Formal Garden and 17th-Century Metaphysics."
Mr. Weiss has chosen a very narrow subject for his dissertation: the aesthetic examination of the French Baroque garden through the analysis of only three gardens -- Vaux-le-Vicomte, Versailles and Chantilly -- by the era's greatest champion, Andre Le Notre. (Note that I did NOT state `three masterpieces', because, as Mr. Weiss will correctly prove, the gardens of Versailles are NOT a masterpiece. It might be one in terms of size, but certainly not in terms of design. It was a surprise to me, too.) At the core of Mr. Weiss's dissertation is his examination of this era's logic through its aesthetics, and therefore, he begins the book with the analysis and explanation of the contemporary paradigm both in the arts, philosophy and sciences. Excellent! (Every landscape design book should do that.) In the Preface, Mr. Weiss discusses the aesthetics of various garden designs of various eras, i.e., the Zen garden, the Italian Renaissance garden, etc., in order to provide a general background of garden logic, so to speak. Also, it is important to note that Mr. Weiss, throughout the book, questions the visitor of why he/she visits a garden and how this mindset affects our perceptions of a garden! In the subsequent chapter, Mr. Weiss explains the aesthetic transformation that occurred within the Baroque era from "motion" to rigidity, the latter being the paradigm for Le Notre. In the following three chapters, Mr. Weiss gives both a historical account of each garden as well as a complete aesthetic analysis to show what makes each garden unique. Finally, Mr. Weiss concludes with a Postface in which he recounts a couple more historical facts about the French Baroque garden in subsequent centuries, and concludes by, once again, questioning us why we, the visitors, enter these gardens. This is actually very important.
With this book, Mr. Weiss has not only given a thorough dissertation of French Baroque landscape design, but has elevated the level of dissertation of a landscape design era to such a degree that all future discussions of any other landscape design era MUST now be as methodical and complete as his: he has "raised the bar" of landscape design dissertation.
The Quotation of Versailles.......2000-03-09
This book was recommended as further reading in my History of European Garden Design course, and proved helpful in understanding the quotation of Versailles to the imperial gardens of Rome, and then lead me to research why L'Enfant would use Versailles for the blueprint of Washington D.C.
Elegant, gracefully erudite, and concise........1998-08-29
An elegant, gracefully erudite and concise intellectual history. It is a focussed and yet wide-ranging look at the function and meaning of French 18th century formal gardens, specifically Vaux-le-Vicomte, Versailles, and Chantilly. The sources cited are also fascinating, and it is a book that leads you to many others. I found it quite wonderful, and am looking forward to reading more by the author.

Book Description
Raising Children Who Think for Themselves, by Elisa Medhus, M.D., is the proud recipient of three highly prestigious awards: The 2002 Parent's Choice Award, The NAPPA Gold Award (National Parenting Publications Association,) and the National Parenting Center Seal of Approval.
Customer Reviews:
it all makes sense.......2002-08-28
Page after page all made it clear that Dr. Medus really did her homework in putting together this great book on raising a confident and intrinsically successful child. Being a new father I find it a little daunting in being responsible (at least partially) for the behavioral molding of a human being. This book was a real eye opener is so many ways, from methods of dealing with conflict, to getting your child to accept his/her bedtime. In many instances I would finish reading a certain hypothetical scenario Dr. Medus had invented and think "wow that's exactly how I felt growing up!" Since my daughter is still only 6 months old I plan to reread this book many more times while she is growing up. I'd even recommend those without children to read it as it really hits home on how much our society is "externally directed" rather than internally.
Raising Children Who Think for Themselves.......2001-11-07
This is a wonderful guide for parents and educators who are searching for techniques to help children avoid the pitfalls of "following the crowd." The author provides many practical strategies and "real life" examples of how to interact with children to prevent inadvertent development of an external locus of control. The suggestions are powerful and helpful to all adults who want to help children become independent thinkers in a world filled with challenges. Following the author's advice will enhance student development and improve parenting skills simultaneously.
NAPRA Book Review.......2001-09-13
The problmes that seem pervasive among youth today, from mindless consumerism and premature sex to school shootings and drug abuse, have raised an uproar on all sides, and the blame for these ills gets bounced around like a ping-pong ball!--TV, video games, lack of religion, rap music, and on and on. But Dr. Medhus, after hundreds of interviews with children from all kids of backgrounds, reaches the conclusion that the problems really all spring from a common source: personalities that react to outside forces rather than their own beliefs and morals. Laying out the difference between "externally directed" people who act according to impulses, peer pressure, and the fear of punishment, and "self-directed" people, who have been taught to think for themselves and follow their own consciences, she goes on to share parenting methods intended to encourage the introspection, empathy, and high self-esteem that gives self-directed children their ability to resist negative influences. The author discusses specific techniques for handling many kinds of situations, with rules and disciplinary measures that help kids understand why bad behavior is wrong, instead of shaming or scaring them into blind submission. Indispensible advice for parents seeking to inspire their kids to self-confidence, adventurousness, independence, competence, and the ability to make positive contributions to the world.--MZ
Good advice.......2001-09-12
Dr. Medhus has successfully communicated her great knowledge of raising strong, independent children. This experience is based on real life - with her family - as well as the more traditional doctor's observations.
I reccomend it to every parent who is trying to raise stong and successful children in these difficult times.
A must read for parents of all ages.......2001-07-23
Wow, what a great read! Dr. Medhus highlights some seemingly "easy", yet truly profound ways that all parents, no matter what stage they are at, can use to improve their interactions with their children. I am a mother of two, and try daily to have a positive impact on my girls lives. Reading this pointed out to me many venues where by simply shifting my paradigm slightly, I can more effectively be the parent that I strive to be. Thank you Dr. Medhus for sharing your knowledge with parents everywhere. You certainly have touched our lives.

Book Description
This epic biographical poem chronicles the life of the dynamic and controversial American painter Jackson Pollock. The magnificent narrative chronicles Pollock's reckless, adventurous, and often desperate life, from his beginnings in the American northwest through his pioneering of a revolutionary new painting technique that came to be known as Abstract Expressionism to his death behind the wheel of a car on Long Island when he was only 44 years old. Written entirely in iambic trimeter, the poem captures the essence of the brilliant yet tortured artist in language that is as breathtaking as a Pollock painting: spontaneous, beautiful, and haunting, with bursts of energy that touch the soul and make it soar.
Customer Reviews:
Blazing comet burning out!.......2004-08-17
This book was a revelation to me! I've always loved the strength
and delicacy of Pollock's works, without ever being able to place the undercurrent of violence and black rage in it. Now I understand. What a fascinating picture of how an artist can turn
what to others would be crippling limitations into lasting beauty!
Thank you, Martin Gray, for opening my eyes.

This engrossing biography provides a vivid account of the talented and resolutely independent Marie d'Agoult (18051876). Known widely for abandoning her French nobleman husband to elope with pianist and composer Franz Liszt, d'Agoult later won fame as a writer under the pen name Daniel Stern. Her writings earned her a reputation as journalist and historian, and her salon attracted noted artists, reformers, and freethinkers of the time.
