Motorcycling in Japan.......2007-01-12
The title of the book initially stopped me from buying it, however being the only book written about motorcycle travel in Japan (in English) I eventually purchased a copy having little luck elsewhere researching this subject.
Its a basic source of information talking about some good roads for motorcyle riding from Tokyo and further away told from the point of view of someone living there doing rides away on weekends or similar.
The author speaks fluent Japanese and writes from the point of view that the reader will be able to speak Japanese if riding in Japan and be familiar with many aspects of Japan like he is, so the route info is really all this book offers.
Still that in itself is impossible to find elsewhere and perhaps worth the price if you are planning a motorcycle tour in Japan.
Best Book on This Subject.......2001-05-30
Actually this is the only book on this subject of which I am aware. If you're contemplating motorcycling in Japan or are already doing so, it would make a great addition to your library. It is full of suggested touring routes covering the entire country and highlights some sights along the way that you could have missed otherwise. It has enough maps to get you started and to help you find the routes on a proper road atlas. The text is a quick, easy read. Interesting and plenty of useful information.
One omission: it doesn't contain any information about how to rent a bike in Japan. This is exactly the information that a short-term visitor and would-be motorcyclist would need.

The Same 'Ol from the Same 'Ol.......2000-02-08
Ruff's been preparing for economic catastrophe for 30 years. Now he's added moralistic sermons to the cataclysmic mix. In the 1970s, Ruff told us to buy gold and fill our basements with silver and food, then nothing happened. In 1999, he told us to buy gold and fill our basements with silver and food for Y2K, then nothing happened. You think the gullible public will ever learn? Is this guy in the food or gold business? Or does he sell generators? Ruff blames America's problems on welfare and the breakdown of the family even though welfare rolls are reducing rapidly, he demonizes Clinton even though the economy is the best in 35 years, and he tells us sex outside marriage is breaking down America and causing (guess what?) more welfare and the breakdown of America, Social Security insolvency, and a pile of liars. Ruff has 13 children and 48 grandchildren so more power to him for his solid religious and family life, but it ain't exactly a model of restraint! He wants the government to be there with Social Security, but blames the government for regulations. His 70's book was poignant and thought-provoking; this one, for me at least, couldn't cut mustard.
Excellent treatise on the subject of preparedness........1999-07-21
Having met the author personally several times, I know that he truly does walk the talk. This book deals not only with y2k preparation, but, generally in getting your life financially and generally prepared for any catastrophe. If this book falls short in any area it would be that it focuses on those who are already financially set. It would seem absurd for anyone living from pay check to pay check to aquire some of the basics the author recommends. Also, Howard paints a picture of gloom and doom, which may put some readers off a little. However, as he writes in his book, "hope for the best possible scenario, but prepare for the worst." Personally, I would love to see Howard Ruff, or someone with his inegrity to run for president. I thoroughly enjoyed this book, cover to cover.

A heavyweight weighs in to the Y2K discussion.......1999-05-10
A am glad to see an author of Howard Ruff's reputation weighing in to the fight for truth. He was there in the 1970s and again two decades later to shine a little reality on a foggy situation. Clear, understandable advice on what is likely to happen with the banking systems and social security and how to assess the impact on one's life, health and finances.
I also recommend The Survivor's Guide to The Year 2000 by David Epp as it had compelling reasons to invest in the metals because of Y2K - and most interesting - even if it were not for Y2K. With the FED printing money at over 10 percent, inflation is sure to raise its ugly head very soon. The question is what next and when? These two books clarified that for me perfectly. I am ready and will be prepared thanks to two very well researched books.

Useful information for quilting.......2007-08-30
I thought the book was quite good. It was a great help with some of my questions but could have been more thorough on some of the sections. That being said I still think it was informative and would recommend for another beginner.
Made no sense.......2007-05-02
I have taken a couple quilting classes and made 2 crib quilts before buying this book. I'm currently attempting the "Trip Around the world" design and can not make sense of the instructions. I've already spent about 15 hours (my mother too) trying to make sense of what goes where. It just isn't clear or there is an incorrectly written step. Very frustrating.
no longer an idiot.......2007-03-10
Great easy to understand instructions and diagrams. No longer feel stupid since all questions and answers are here. Tells you what you need to know and then some.
Fantastic book.......2007-01-16
I found this book absolutely fabulous, perfect for the beginner, I have many books on Quilting but I could never quite grasp it!! With this book I have seen the light,I found it so easy to follow, with step by step instruction. It has many easy projects. I began with a sampler quilt and managed to finish! I am so excited that I can finally quilt. It truely is the complete idiots quide to quilting. It is THE book for a beginner!
For machine and handsewers alike.......2007-01-13
I had previously made several machine sewn quilts, but had never really been taught how to make them. Most of what I knew I just picked up along the way. When I began reading this book it was with the intention of learning some of the techniques and vocabulary I had never been taught. I hoped to find tricks to make quilting for me a bit less tidious and time comsuming. Well, I found it in this book! I will agree with the comment made previously that this book is geared more toward handsewing, which at first put me off a little. I decided though that it couldn't hurt to learn and try it the authors way, and by so doing possibly even pick information up that could help me with my machine quilting also. I found that it did just that! Much of what I learned can be adapted and made useful for machine quilting also. So if you machine quilt do not despair, give the book a try. The book was easy to read and enjoyable and I was even able to make my first hand sewn lap quilt with in two weeks over the Christmas holiday. That may seem like nothing, but I assure you if I had done it by machine it would have taken me longer, cause you can't pack up your machine and take it with you where ever you go(i.e. the doctor's office, the car, etc).

Book Description
At least half of all married men and women have cheated on their spouse at least once. Yet cheaters often find themselves stumbling through their marriage and their affairs, causing great pain to themselves and the people they care about. If you're considering having an affair (or suspect that your partner is having one) Judith Brandt's THE 50-MILE RULE will show you how to safely stray (or how to catch your adultering partner). THE 50-MILE RULE gives men and women the information they need to make smarter decisions when pursuing sex outside of marriage (including the rule that spouse and lover should never live within 50 miles of each other). Discover who makes a suitable affair partner, the rules you must never break, when to call it quits, and what to do if you're caught. With sensible facts that make a case for fidelity, as well as practical tips for having successful affairs, THE 50-MILE RULE is the ultimate handbook for cheater and scorned alike.
Customer Reviews:
Thoughtful review............2007-04-15
I realize this is a highly sensitive topic and lots of people have different opinions. It is also true that although most people aspire to and certainly expect fidelity, many people end up straying despite good intentions. One school of thought on how to best handle this is to hide the facts, which is what this author holds out as the gold standard of behavior. The rationale is that sharing this information would hurt the other partner and that since affairs are basically unavoidable, if you love someone you are almost morally obligated to hide the truth. This doesn't sound like love to me, but if you subscribe to this line of reasoning you will be very happy with all of the suggestions this author has for disorienting your partner, avoiding the responsibility of an authentic relationship and addressing relationship problems or issues head-on and co-creating a win-win situation (or making a difficult decision that your partner may not like).
This author is obviously intelligent and her book is entertaining. It is fairly well-organized and it does recognize the difficulty of struggling with the shame and guilt associated with affairs and the lack of cultural understanding of how people's social and mating agendas are often in conflict. I think Ms. Brandt is compassionate, but misguided in some fundamental ways and I disagree with her approach for reasons that I explain in more detail below. If you were turned off by my review so far, you may not want to read on.
As a personal growth coach, I regularly work with clients who are on the receiving end of an affair. My experience is that it is NOT the extra-marital sex itself that is the most basic problem, but rather the fact that one has been deceived by someone who is in a position of extreme trust. It goes without saying that both people are extremely vulnerable emotionally.
I'm not sure one can call something an authentic relationship if it is characterized by deception i.e. outright lying, half-truths and lies of omission. This seems to run contrary to the very definition of love. In my opinion, if you read this book and in your heart-of-hearts you can say that this is how you would want YOUR partner to behave toward you, then I would say it's a good fit. If not, I would suggest either Private Lies: Infidelity and Betrayal of Intimacy or Will Our Love Last?: A Couple's Road Map for either dealing with these temptations or coming to agreements that work. Another good book in this genre is Conscious Loving: The Journey to Co-Committment.
I have compassion for people who cheat on their partner and on the partner cheated on. I think in these situations both people suffer and often other innocent parties such as children are hurt by the fallout. Marriage and commitment is certainly a difficult road to travel and some situations are very difficult. Life is not clean and simple and while affairs do happen, I'm not sure the answer for the society at large is this approach. Certainly, our inherited biology makes being loyal a challenge, but I suspect there is a benefit in struggling with these tendencies. An interesting perspective on our evolutionary tendencies around this area can be gained from reading the The Evolution of Desire: Strategies of Human Mating. This book explains that both sexes do indeed have short and long term mating strategies that are hardwired and at odds. It's a great book, however, it doesn't go into the fact that we are hardwired to bond in as great detail or talk about the fact that we may have evolved to a point where we can hold our biology with respect and choose to act in a manner consistent with our values. I think this is a point that this book misses and instead of encouraging us to reach higher, it seems to encourage us to regress.
If you want a good read on the biology of love and bonding, then you might try A General Theory of Love. This provides more balance to the picture. While it may come across as so, this review is not meant to be judgmental or moralistic. I understand how difficult it is to struggle with temptation, admit difficult truths to your partner, etc. One way to look at these are things to hide, another is as steppingstones to growth and intimacy. This is where my bias lies and if what I have observed in my practice is true, for most people affairs are often nothing more than very temporary, but costly pain killers. In many cases, affairs seem to make a bad marriage bearable, which often leads to partners not facing their problems together from the same side and working out a solution that serves both people and the family.
This review is my opinion and I tried to be balanced. There are many reviewers who are outraged and others that think this is great stuff. What I tried to offer here is what I have learned from my own experience, extensive reading on this topic and working with couples. My intent is not to slam the author or make people who have affairs feel "bad" or "ashamed." What I so want to offer is another perspective that will be useful to some and not useful to others. However, I think if you are entertaining something as serious as an affair with lots of potential consequences, you might want to try out many different perspectives before making a decision that can cause your life to come crashing down around your ears overnight. I believe people are responsible for their choices and the more their choices effect others, the more responsibility is involved. I'm sure there are many readers out there who share this view and I suspect that even those struggling with strong temptation in some cases for very real and painful reasons can see the grain of truth in this point of view as well.
very entertaining.......2006-11-08
I had a hard time not chuckling through the whole book. I am sure there are those who might not appreciate the humor and could feel intimidated by the subject but IT IS A GREAT READ!!!! A well rounded view of the human animal at play. Lots of information as well as good advice on both sides of the fence. Her style reminds me of Bryson who also melds information with humor. Just don't let your spouse see you reading it. Actually my girlfriend did and I recommended it heartily to her..........she is now chuckling her way through it.
Outraged.......2006-02-23
I am absolutely outraged at the concept of this book. I was just cheated on by my boyfriend and came to amazon to search for helpful books on affairs and this was the first book to pop up!! How to HIDE an affair? This makes me as sick to my stomach as my boyfriend did when I discovered the affair. What ever happened to being honest in a relationship. If you don't want to be with someone that you say you love then save them the pain and heartache of discovering that you have been unfaithful. They will find out, cheaters are always caught. The author of this book simply disgusts me. I now wonder what has happened to the world because people apparently believe it is ok to hurt someone they care about enough to write a how-to book on the subject. disgraceful.
Valuable insights in spite of off-putting title.......2005-10-19
I read this book because I was curious, wanted to pick apart her arguments, and also pride myself on being able to expose myself to other viewpoints occasionally. I'll begin by saying that my Christian principles and other core beliefs would still prevent me from seeking out an affair. That being said, this book has helped me better understand, and perhaps be tolerant of, those who do make the choice. It's similar to abortion--I've been pro-life for 25 years and will never change, but my attitudes towards pro-choicers have softened somewhat over the years.
Some of her insights were refreshing to me as a middle-aged single woman--for example that there really aren't enough available men out there for all the available women. Period. So the Harvard study was right after all. Single women have always sort of known these things in their bones, yet most of media and popular culture just tells us to try harder, be less picky, try online dating, blah, blah. She also asserts that singles, single women in particular are devalued in our society. No kidding. She is reminiscent of Tom Leykis in that she makes some pretty politically incorrect assertions that are nevertheless mostly true--for example, that women marry the best man their looks can attract and men marry the best woman that their incomes can afford. So you can see that a lot of mainstream relationship experts and others in the singles industry might have an interest in discouraging people from reading her. She's definitely a pragmatic utilitarian, not a romantic idealist. And in some cases she's a flat-out cynic. But so are some of my best friends. I did find myslef wondering what if any spiritual beliefs she subscribes to--I would guess atheist or agnostic but she doesn't say.
Forgot one rule...........2005-08-27
Never read it, heard her on Howard Stern and I was laughing at all the rules she says not to do. My question is what about the book? She left out rule number 1: do not buy the book to have your spouse see it. that would be a tell tell sign, would it not
?
There goes her marketing, maybe that is why she was on the radio.

Book Description
John Hoover grew up in Cordova, Alaska, in an era when it was an international city and one of the richest ports in the West. Born in 1919 to a Dutch father and Aleut-Russian mother, Hoover has worked as a fisherman, taxi driver, drummer, and sailor--and, throughout, he has been an artist. The ancient Indians, Eskimos, and Aleuts, and the spirits that guided them, still guide Hoover today. It is their stories, as well as his own, that he brings alive in his cedar carvings. Now in his eighties, Hoover continues to create small- and large-scale sculptures in cedar and bronze. He was one of the first to successfully bridge the gap between traditional and contemporary art, and he has spent a lifetime mastering his craft, breaking new ground, and reviving ancient cultures. In each of his roles--as Aleut artist, musician, fisherman, and storyteller--he has striven to exemplify dedication, perseverance, and perfection.
