Customer Reviews:
A real stand-out compared to other Austin guides........2002-05-02
Like the last reviewer, I too was considering a work-related move to Austin. I wanted a guide book that could give me a quick and easy entry into what Austin had to offer a tourist and potential resident. This guide book gave me a good overview of Austin while I was there -- it wasn't just an index or list of area attractions and businesses: It contained a lot of useful 'tips' interspersed through out the book and the maps were clear and well integrated with the text.
I had some reservations before I bought this because the maps were not in color. However, the maps were clear and concise. Rather than clutter up 1 map with icons for restaurants, attractions, etc., the maps were repeated in each section of the guide, and contained only the relevant data for that section; this made using them very easy. I'd also say that the authors of the book were very generous with the number and variety of maps.
Overall, the design of the book made reading and finding information easy. Good use of bold type made flipping through and finding stuff easy too.
In the end, I got the Austin job and will be moving there soon. As a future Austin resident, I think this will still be the only guide I need.
Good for potential residents.......1999-10-02
I am considering a move to Austin and found a lot of useful information in this guidebook. I used it to plan my freetime following a job interview in the city and found it right on target regarding the restaurant reviews. Good buy!
An indispensable guide to a multifaceted city........1998-10-06
"City Smart Austin" is an indispensable guide to aculturally-rich and multifaceted city.
Austin natives EleanorS. Morris, Paris Permenter, and John Bigley wisely present the city in six geographic zones. And they cover everything from Austin basics (weather, homes, people, etc) and day trips to recreation areas and where to shop/eat/stay.
Whether they are writing about "BookPeople" (one of the largest bookstores in the U.S.) or the 'Dillo Express (one of the city's laudable forms of public transportation), the authors speak with warmth and home-town credibility.
I was especially pleased with their accessment of Austin's accommodations. Yes, they duly point out the grandeur of the historic Driskill Hotel. But they also note the convenience and affortability of the La Quinta at the Capitol, which not only has a gracious new manager, but renovated "Gold Metal Rooms," which have new decor, 25-inch TVs, and speaker phones!
The book's maps are clear and helpful, with inset-captions for easy referral; and the b&w photos--while a tad too small--are often bright and sharp.
An added treat of "City Smart Austin" are the valuable coupons in the back of the book. Don't miss them!
Great look at a fun city!.......1998-07-18
I am a longtime Austin resident and discovered some hidden treasures about my city in this useful guide! I will be referring to this book often when I have company in from out of town or when I'm looking to enjoy a little one day vacation without leaving Austin's borders!

"
The heartwarming and unforgettable
story of a family in the making and the
wondrously neurotic dog who taught
them what really matters in life
John and Jenny were just beginning their life together. They were young and in love, with a perfect little house and not a care in the world. Then they brought home Marley, a wiggly yellow furball of a puppy. Life would never be the same.
Marley quickly grew into a barreling, ninety-seven-pound streamroller of a Labrador retriever, a dog like no other. He crashed through screen doors, gouged through drywall, flung drool on guests, stole women's undergarments, and ate nearly everything he could get his mouth around, including couches and fine jewelry. Obedience school did no goodMarley was expelled. Neither did the tranquilizers the veterinarian prescribed for him with the admonishment, ""Don't hesitate to use these.""
And yet Marley's heart was pure. Just as he joyfully refused any limits on his behavior, his love and loyalty were boundless, too. Marley shared the couple's joy at their first pregnancy, and their heartbreak over the miscarriage. He was there when babies finally arrived and when the screams of a seventeen-year-old stabbing victim pierced the night. Marley shut down a public beach and managed to land a role in a feature-length movie, always winning hearts as he made a mess of things. Through it all, he remained steadfast, a model of devotion, even when his family was at its wit's end. Unconditional love, they would learn, comes in many forms.
Is it possible for humans to discover the key to happiness through a bigger-than-life, bad-boy dog? Just ask the Grogans.

Customer Reviews:
Excellent Edition of Marley and Me.......2007-10-11
I bought this edition of 'Marley and Me' to see the extra photographs of Marley and also for John Grogan's newspaper column he wrote after Marley died. I highly recommend this edition to everyone, it truly is a treasure.
An incredible tale.......2007-10-05
This book was wonderful - ignore the one star reviews, seriously. It was never intended to be an intellectual story with an incredible plot (or twist), and it certainly wasn't meant to make one feel angry at the author as you read it.
If you can open your mind (and heart), and read this book as a simple tale of such a basic relationship between dog and owner(s), you will be rewarded with such a funny, warm, heart-wrenching, inspiring tale that could well make you a better person.
I ENJOYED the moments of self-indulgence - where we got an understanding about who John was and what was going on in HIS life. I think the book needed that to avoid being entirely about a dog and his experiences - let's face it, no matter how great Marley is (or isn't), he wasn't going to warrant 200 pages of text (or was he?). It's this discussion of family, of growing up, of happiness and anger, that draws so many parallels between the life of a human being, and the life of a dog. It is summarized so brilliantly towards the end of the book and, as you wipe away the tears, you can only feel an incredible sense of optimism and hope well after you turn the last page.
Predictable ending? Well duh. You do know where it's going from the moment you purchase the book - from the moment you purchase a DOG. But HOW Grogan gets there is brilliantly done. His writing style is well-paced, conversational, yet entirely descriptive. I felt the warmth of the South Florida sun as I watched Marley play in the ocean, and I felt everyones shivers in the grey, cold winter in PA. Ultimately, I felt the utter sadness that an entirely family felt, and the power of reminiscence & focusing on those special moments in life.
Here's to you, Grogan. Your book touched my heart; and to Marley - your existence has touched millions of people around the world without you even knowing it. If that's not a successful book, I'm not quite sure what is.
How fast the time goes with Crazy Pups.......2007-10-03
I just finished Marley & Me.
The Best read I have had in a long time. It was like watching a GREAT movie, only better. I have loved and lost 1 best friend recently and the other best friend is now over 10 years....this book makes you think...remember.... and thank the heavens for allowing them to be here with us for their period of time reminding us that we are "only Human".
I loved the book and have 6 people in line to borrow it now that I am finished.
If you like to laugh, love dogs and appreciate terrific writing, buy or borrow this book!
A+ Marley will be with me forever.
Beautiful! Touching!.......2007-09-29
John Grogan brings a great deal of heart to Marley's story. It reminds one of how precious pets can be and how these little ones share so much with us as life goes on.
It's a beautiful, touching, and vivid story, and you'll just fall in love with it.
Thanks, John, for sharing such a great tale :-)
a wonderful story.......2007-09-25
You will laugh and cry. A great story for anyone who has ever loved a dog.

Product Description
The Baxter stories are based on the sometimes touching, sometimes suspenseful, but always exciting true-life adventures of a tiny dog with a big heart. The mission of this children's book is to educate children that even a humble, unassuming animal (such as a pet dog) can overcome life's trials and lead a fruitful, productive life. These little children's stories emphasize that life-in any form, whether human or animal-is valuable and reinforce the concept that all God's creatures have their own place and time on Earth. Similar to the wonderful theme Disney stories have presented for generations! During his lifetime, little Baxter spread joy and happiness wherever his travels took him. He makes a wonderful role model, demonstrating that an ordinary creature can triumph over what, at the time, appears to be great adversity. Baxter is an inspiration to children who suffer from traumatic events such as abandonment or serious physical injuries. Volume One: Baxter is abandoned by his family and struck by a car. Veterinarians rush to mend his broken legs. A TV station put Baxter on the local news, announcing that he needs a new home. Merry Jones, a cheery young woman with two cats, is chosen as Baxter's new owner. Volume Two: Baxter is dressed as a Bat Dog and spends Halloween with Merry's niece and nephew. They attend the school's Halloween party and other fun outdoor events. Baxter generously shares his goodies with his cat friends-Cinnamon and Pearly-Mae. Volume Three: Baxter and the family cats decide what presents to give their "owners" for Christmas. A snowstorm prevents Baxter from digging out his surprise bone gift. But afterwards, Baxter discovers a miraculous gift that demonstrates his devotion and love. A portion of ALL proceeds will be donated to various humane charities. wwwbaxterthebatdog.com.

Bat Dog is a hit!.......2005-08-27
"The Life & Times of Baxter the Bat Dog" is probably one of the sweetest stories I've ever enjoyed reading to my children. This beautiful children's book is actually three short stories about the cutest little bat dog named Baxter.
* The first story tells of how Baxter finds a new family after being abandoned. This first meeting between the reading and Baxter is precious. His eagerness to embrace life endears him to your heart.
* The second story is Baxter's first Halloween. His kindness in remembering to share his treats with his new family is a wonderful life lesson for children.
* The last is Baxter's first Christmas. His desire to give his new owner a special gift is reminiscent of the "The Gift of the Magi" by O. Henry.
Carollee Wagonlite is an extraordinarily gifted storyteller. Baxter's sweet spirit shines through the story with gentle grace. "Baxter" is based on a real-life little dog and his adventures. How such a sweet little baby was abandon is hard to understand but I can only rejoice that he was adopted by the Wagonlite family and through this book shared with us all.
The illustrations of Oswaldo Rosales are charming. Baxter's personality and joy of life was easily seen by children. I often find my toddler studying the pictures and giggling.
I have given "The Life and Times of Baxter, the Bat Dog" five stars! Not only did I love the stories and illustrations, but my preschool children did. And although the real-life Baxter is no longer living, we hope to see more adventures soon.

Great motivation for young children.......2005-06-15
The Life and Times of Baxter the Bat Dog is a cute exposé into the life of Baxter who experiences several adventures during his life. Although categorized for the 4 to 8 age group, the size of the book might be overwhelming for a young reader so it is nice that it is broken down into smaller volumes, bound together as one.
Volume One starts off with Baxter being hit by a car. After being abandoned by his family, a news story sends plenty of people his way, looking to adopt him. He finds a new and wonderful home with Merry Jones and her two cats.
Volume Two finds Baxter trick-or-treating for Halloween dressed as a bat. His pointy ears and black fur make being dressed as a bat the perfect costume for him. He attends a Halloween party and goes home to share his bounty with Merry's cats.
Volume Three brings Baxter to Christmas and his dilemma on delivering Christmas gifts to Merry and the cats, Cinnamon and Pearly-Mae. In the end Baxter learns the true meaning of Christmas.
Children and their caretakers will fall in love with Baxter. I hope there is a continuation of the series as it is encouraging to find an example of how to behave from a loveable creature that everybody can envision and relate to. Written in simple English whether a child is reading or being read to, equal enjoyment can be found in both the pictures and prose.
Great Book for Children of ALL ages !.......2005-05-01
I have just completed reading and reviewing the book 'The Life and Times of Baxter the Bat Dog".
I am a pet owner myself, having a black long haired cat named 'Baxter' and a dog also rescued from the animal shelter named 'Aussie' - who is part Border Collie and part Australian Shepherd. I loved the dialogue between Baxter, Cinnamon and Pearly-Mae.
I think this book will serve it's purpose well, with children of all ages. The message is clear that we are all loveable, no matter that we are not 'perfect'. This should especially reach children with physical handicaps, or who have been abandoned, or adopted. It will even impact the child who is always picked on for having 'big ears' or other less-than-perfect physical features.
It is also important to note the gifts that our pets give back to us, the unconditional love and devotion, companionship, gratitude, and genuine happiness to see us each day, or the physical Christmas gift that Baxter gave his owners. When a pet is adopted from an animal shelter or an animal rescue group, the bond that is created between the pet and the owner is one of the strongest attachments I have seen.
I am grateful to Carollee for writing this book, and also benefiting the various animal charities.
Wonderful!.......2005-04-17
The Life & Times of Baxter the Bat Dog! portrays a cute, little dog who experiences some of the same events as most young children. Children love animal stories and many have pets. As children enter elementary school, they are encouraged to write creatively. They write about things they know and have experienced, and many times it is about a pet. Baxter would make a good story starter.
Baxter got his name "Bat Dog" because he had very pointy ears and booked somewhat like a bat. Baxter's first experience in the book results in a stay at the hospital after an accident, when he is hit by a car. Find out how Baxter becomes a TV star.
Chapters 2 and 3 are stories about children's favorite holidays: Halloween and Christmas. Children love to dress up in costume and pretend. Baxter experiences the same fun activities children do during Halloween. Christmas is a time of snow, sharing love and making special gifts for family. Baxter has a very special surprise for his special family.
The author shares Baxter's emotions and love with the reader. With the addition of beautifully illustrated pictures, this wonderful children's book will bring enjoyment to both young and mature readers.
Reader friendly for all ages!.......2005-04-10
As a mother of a ten and a thirteen-year old, I appreciate the quality of the writing and the superb illustrations in The Life and Times of Baxter the Bat Dog! My ten-year old son never reads a book in one sitting; but to my amazement, he finished Baxter the Bat Dog in one sitting. My thirteen-year old daughter also enjoyed reading about Baxter. I would definitely recommend this book to friends.

Book Description
Here’s a fresh take on the crafts of rugmaking and knitting—the very first book of its kind. These 21 stylish rug projects are so eye-catching that it’s hard to believe that even novice knitters can create them. But they can, thanks to a thorough section on knitting basics, sumptuously illustrated with more than 60 how-to photographs; advice on embellishments, including embroidery, fringes, and tassels; and instruction on finishing touches, such as weaving ends, sewing seams, blocking, backing, and lining. Put this knowledge to work on a multicolored Big Needle Garter Stitch Rug, Knit and Purl Oval Rug, Thunderbird Wall Tapestry, and others. Every rug is beautifully photographed in a home setting, and includes patterns and ideas for modifying the design. The author lives in Longmont, CO.
Customer Reviews:
The knitted rug is the best ever.......2007-05-06
I received this book and have completed three of the items in it, Directions and pictures and the best. thank you
Knit Rugs - OH YES.......2006-05-09
I found this book to contain even more ideas/pattern and wonderful rugs than imaginable. The pure selection of rugs is impressive. Colorful rugs, cabled rugs, runners, circular ... you name it, and it is in the book.
What I find wonderful is that the explanations are great, the patterns are easy to follow, and there is a load of information about rugs themselves. This book is great for knitters of all levels. You'll wonder how you ever lived without this book (gifts in a flash).
I love this book!.......2005-02-07
If you're looking to create a beautiful knitted home accent and don't feel like worrying about gauge, this is the book for you. Knit Mediterranean-style mosaic rugs with slip-stitch knitting, or a cheery 5-color rug for a baby's room, or a handsome cable-edged rug, a Shaker pinwheel, or even a loopy pile bathroom mat. The possibilities are endless, as is the creativity of the author of this book.
The First of Its Kind.......2004-10-28
This is definitely a collectable for new as well as experienced knitters alike. The author of this book provides detailed information along with full-colored photos of knitted rugs. This book shows you the tools and techniques to prepare, knit, and store your rug. The Pile rug section was interesting and informative, especially the Waterfall Fringe Rug which combines knitting with the latch hook technique. Furthermore, Fair Isle In-The-Round will entice any creative knitter to jump from Fair Isle sweaters to rugs. Overall, this is a must for any knitting collection.
Complete Introduction and How-To for Knitted Rugs.......2004-10-14
This is a great book for knitters who are tired of knitting scarves or who have filled their homes with afghans and are looking for a new canvas for their knitting.
The book begins with a fascinating overview of the history of rug knitting, then includes complete directions for all the skills needed- even a beginner can be successful. Finally, the book includes instructions for a wide variety of rug types and shapes, from shaggy pile (who knew those could be knitted?) to coiled through various types of colorwork and texture.
The author also points out a multitude of other purposes for "rug" patterns, from wall hangings to pillows to table mats and more! There are great ideas for all kinds of home decor, and best of all they don't include sizing or shaping, so beginning knitters can have a great result and more experienced knitters can concentrate on design without worrying about the fit, if they're making the item as a gift. This would also make a great book for a guild or group of knitters to use as a knit-along project, since varying the colors and yarns used would make for a great variety of pieces!

Book Description
Herbs have been widely used for centuries to promote good health and treat disease in Asian countries. Indeed, the general population of both Eastern and Western countries are beginning to use herbs more frequently. International health organizations and governmental agencies such as WHO and the U.S. FDA, respectively, have recognized the consumer popularity of herbal products. In response, scientists must recognize the need to assure the efficacy and safety of traditional herbal remedies through modern research. Thus, herbal products should be continually researched as the basis for development of both high quality dietary supplements and new medicines. This book intends to address some of current developments in herbal research.

Good guidelines.......2007-05-12
This gives great tips---of course, I can't find the book to review its details right now---it' buried somewhere in my daughter's bedroom :-)
I really like the American Girl series of books for my soon-to-be teen girl. While parental guidance is most important, these various guides have a great supportive role to play. My daughter really enjoys them, and wants to spend time looking through and discussing them WITH me! That's a wonderful thing!
so helpful! A Teen's Review.......2007-01-31
I recieved this book from my wish list after I decided I wanted to start babysitting. This is probably the book you want if you want to start. I haven't even read through the whole book yet but from already reading just chapters in it, this book has really helped me feel ready and excited to babysit! Sometimes, if something didn't work out that day for babysitting, I'll take a look in this book, and check up on what they suggest for different types of situations. This book covers practically everything you'll need to know, from changing diapers, to babysitting more than one child at once. One chapter I like includes ideas and suggestions for activities for different age groups. The only thing it doesn't include is major emergencies and how you take care of them (besides calling 911). If you want to learn those types of things, then I would reccomend taking a class for babysitting. I have found this book extremely helpful!!!
Geared for..........2006-01-11
I was shopping at Von Maur when I saw these cute slipper socks with ducks on them around christmas, so I picked them up and felt how soft they were, boy were they soft, then my eye scanned the table... lip gloss, more slipper socks, babysitters guide, eureka!!! I've seen this book and always wanted it. I got the duck slippers and the Babysitters kit that day. It is mostly helpful to beginners but there is some vital information for more advanced sitters also. Part of the reason I go this was because our very close family friends were adopting a baby from south korea, who was two in october of '05. He is the best-natured toddler I know. Trust me I know a lot! He is so so so cute!!!!! ANyways... It helped me start my blooming buisness, so much that I even babysat for two of my old teachers all the time!
Great for my 11 year old niece.......2005-11-18
I bought this for my 11 year old niece because we were going to be bringing home a baby and she wanted to start baby sitting. I feel 11 is too young to baby sit, but it is a perfect age to be a mother's helper. So she is studying and training and I think this will help her.
I gave 4 stars because this book is geared towards a younger girl, just breaking into child care but wouldn't be of much interest to older, established baby sitters. But it has good practical information and emphasizes responsibility.
Best Babysitting Book Ever!!!.......2005-11-15
This book is so helpful! I say the reveiw "Sugar, Spice, and NOT Everything Nice," and I was dissapointed. I thought "We can not be talking about the same book!" This book is SO helpful. I used it when I first started babysitting and now everyone on my block asks me to babysit. This book shows how to change a baby, what do do in an emergency, what to do if you get scared while babysitting, small easy to make snacks to make, and so much more! Please get this for your child if they are planning to babysit. It even shows what to do if someone is trying to get into the house your babysitting in. GET THIS BOOK! It's so totally rocks! It is a book that kids and parents have to love!
Book Description
hile still a young boy, Robb White built his first boat, hewn from the tin roof of an abandoned chicken coop in the backyard-stamping and primping it into shape, then testing it out in the back creek. Today, without any formal training, White constructs some of the most sought after small wooden boats around. This colorful portrait of the author's life invites readers into his special world-a world uncluttered by computers, telephones, and rush orders. With chapters such as 'Seagull: In which I learn not to be so gullible' and 'The canned ham incident: In which I did not participate, so hurrah for the other side,' White shares some of his wisdom gained from boat-building. Here as well are tall tales of a childhood spent exploring the Gulf of Mexico, and lessons learned from having his own family. Both wise and entertaining, How to Build a Tin Canoe will find a place on the shelves of readers who love Bailey White (the author's sister), Roy Blount, and Garrison Keillor.
Customer Reviews:
Just the BEST BOOK IN YEARS!.......2006-03-02
Robb White's descriptions of growing up along the Florida Panhandle sets the stage for one of the funniest, most entertaining books I have read in years. Beginning with a gang of kids, toddlers in diapers to gawky teenagers, who wandered shallow bays and sandy beaches from dawn to dark, White moves on to his Navy years in Puerto Rico, where he spent his off hours (and there were a lot of off them) watching local boat builders, and finally beginning his own boat building business. Stateside, he followed the boat-building trade as best he could, struggling to earn a bare living, with long periods of cash-money work such as crewing aboard tugboats which pushed oil-laden barges around the Gulf Coast and up tiny tidal waterways. I practically rolled on the floor laughing at his accounts of life aboard the tugs, which included ritual trading of tattered "porn" magazines and a crewmate who literally "gutted" an annoying tug captain. Interspersed through lively, often hysterical, accounts of his travels and travails, are delightful chapters about small boats and boating: jury rigging ancient outboard motors, building classic fishing skiffs and featherweight sailing canoes, capturing and cooking the sealife of the Gulf. I couldn't put the "Tin Canoe" down, read it through without stopping and loved every page!
A brief comment.......2005-04-28
If you're a fan of nature or outdoors writing, especially the sort that provides a good deal of local color, you'll probably enjoy this book. It reminded me of William W. Warner's wonderful little book, Beautiful Swimmers, which was about the blue crab and other fisherman of the Chesapeake Bay. (By the way, I can highly recommend Warner's book as it is not as well known as it should be, but it is a much loved classic among those who do. Try reading the reviews here on it and you'll see what I mean. They're practically all rave reviews).
But getting back to White's book, White recounts the life of a Georgia small boat builder and waterman from his earliest childhood to his more mature years. White was practically born building small boats, and it shows, as his knowledge of small boat building and craftsmanship is as broad and deep as the waters he has plied for decades in his homemade canoes.
But the book isn't all about boat building, as White is a first-rate raconteur and tells many funny stories and anecdotes along the way, in addition to giving you his down-home philosophy about people, boats, and life in general. Overall an enjoyable read and if you follow other authors in the genre, like Randy Wayne White, you'll probably want to try Robb White (no relation as far as I know) too.
Great Reading, but not mainly canoe.......2003-09-29
I got this from the library as I am a canoe nut. Turned out more of a continuing "autobiography"(?) in the McManus tradition (THEY SHOOT CANOES. DON'T THEY?)only this is all in the deep south. It is funny, informative and best of all highly irreverant. This guy was corrupted by some of the same forces that did me six decades ago. I am ordering it now for a keeper.
Mark Twain with Salt.......2003-06-04
In this slim but tugid volume, Robb White, heretofor known only to a narrow audience of small-boat nuts, introduces the wide world to his native waters, the Florida Gulf Coast, just like Mark Twain did for his, the Mississippi. This is no idle comparison: Like Twain, he has played with and piloted all kinds of boats upon his waters, met all life's characters there, and kept his eyes wide open all the time. If you think his language can't be as pungent, his characers as rich, his stories as deceptively simple -- well, don't judge till you read him. Then you might agree, Huck Finn ain't got nuthin' on ol' Robb White.
Quality, rightness and virtue: the wildman's revenge!.......2003-05-22
Robb White writes of his wild childhood and wild boating life. And he gets away with it because he's so good! This is candid, uproarious writing of the best sort. It's specific. And you know he knows what he's talking about because he's been there. What a tonic! His work reminds me of Jack Saunders. : ) --A fellow folk writer who hasn't gotten his break yet. Robb's is rough'n'tumble family storytelling, yet it's gentle. It's personal...and it's general. Just the right stuff. More! ...OK, I have to let the cat out of the bag: if you want more, subscribe to the thrifty, friendly little magazine "Messing About In Boats" right now. Robb has been writing biweekly columns for it for years now. What great good times! And fiesty, helpful boating (and living) info, too. (Did you know that Robb is the world's best bass fisherman? He'll tell you why sometime...)

Book Description
In Confessions of a Boatbuilder, James D. Rosborough writes about the building of small wooden vessels in earlier times. From his modest beginnings in the 1940s constructing eight-foot punt rowboats, Rosborough's nautical design efforts grew to include three boatyards, the construction of over 150 vessels-most of them schooners-and a host of distinguished clients. Rosborough pioneered numerous designs ranging in length from 30 to 65 feet. He reveals the unexpected trials and triumphs involved in the design, construction, and operation of these beautiful vessels, as well as the character of a self-determined boatbuilder who grasped one of the last windows of opportunity before the wooden boatbuilding industry bottomed out.
Confessions of a Boatbuilder recaptures the maritime lore and romance of the last days of the wooden boat and the craftsmen who built them; a time of adventure and adversity that shaped the destiny of both builders and sailors, and allowed progression to the seagoing vessels of today.
Includes seven lines plans of major designs by Rosborough.

Marvelous Reading.......2003-11-26
Rosborough isn't a name that means anything to those outside the world of wooden boats, but to the initiated he's a legend. I picked up this well-written autobiography opn a whim and read it stright through. It's a fascinating story, well told, by a man who started out as an engineer working for the phone company with a love of sailing who, almost by accident, found himself first a restorer of boats, and then a designer and builder. Entirely self taught, Rosborough built hundreds of boats still admired for their design and quality of construction. Required reading for the wooden boat obsessed and interesting for mere merely curious as well.
Provides into the professional life of a skilled designer.......2003-05-16
Confessions Of A Boatbuilder is the autobiography of Nova Scotia boatbuilder James (Doug) Rosborough, whose nautical design endeavors have included the construction over 150 sea-worthy vessels in the 1940s and 1950s, -- most of them schooners. Of special interest are the personal insights Rosoborugh provides into the professional life of a skilled designer who was able to build seaworthy craft until the wooden boat-building industry petered out as a result of changing economics and the introduction of such boat-building materials as fiberglass and aluminum. Confessions Of A Boatbuilder is a unique and highly recommended contribution to personal, academic, and community library Nautical History collections.
Wooden ship insight.......2001-07-21
This book is a great look into the world of a man's passion for wooden boats and ships. His obvious love of the traditional world of wooden vessels makes for great reading. Mr. Rosborough is brutally honest throughout, including describing his own less-than-glorious moments. His narrative is fast paced and rivetting. As the third owner of one of his boats, it's also fascinating to read of the first owner, and a little about the vessel, MEGAN D. A must read for those interested in traditional wooden boatbuilding, and those who share a passion for traditional boats.
