This book has 120 plates of wildflowers and includes a paragraph for each one describing common as well as scientific names. a decent, but cursory, overview of financial markets.......2006-04-02

i've been looking for a book that discusses the history of markets around the world, including stock markets, and this one does a decent job of filling part of that desire. what interests me is the way in which we, as humans, have gone from an idea of selling concrete things to abstract things, and how that's evolved over time.

smith's book starts with some of the precursors to the modern stock market, and he'll return to some of those markets (such as the french and german bourses) when the focus shifts to the american and london markets (which have come to dominate the global market perspective). quite a bit of the book seems to race to this time period, basically feeling like a big cheer for the american way. not that this is wrong, i just wanted a broader perspective.

as you might expect, because the book is written by an american in the past few years, it's lean on early history. it covers some interesting parts well, such as the rises and crashes in the early french markets, but it could do better. it also plays a decent bit to the japanese markets (and the huge asian market crash at the end of the 20th century), which is pretty nice, and it does a decent job of introducing options markets. it doesn't cover the russian markets well, or the overall trend of very small markets building up around the world currently. too little time to observe, says smith. and while this is accurate, it's not too early to discuss what forces are behind these changes more in depth.

while i'm still looking for that one great volume, this one is a fair start. 3 to 3.5 stars.

Best Book I've Seen for QB Pro 2002.......2003-08-16

Janet Horn's textbook is the best I have seen in my years of teaching Quick Books Pro. This is a tutorial text, meaning that YOU, the student, have lots of work to do. The instructions are usually clear and concise and VERY easy to follow. An "end of chapter" exercise allows you to see what you learned in the chapter by working without a tutorial other than what was in the chapter. This book contains many screen shots, some of which are not correct, but all of which demonstrate the process of using the book. I've taught accounting for 18 years and have taught computerized accounting for approximately 10 years.

Miracle Guide to construction accounting.......2003-04-22

I am a systems manager, and know nothing about accounting. However I did know that my husband's construction firm was not using QuickBooks Pro properly. Amazon's helpful search engine suggested that I might like Contractor's Guide to Quickbooks Pro 2002. Amazon sure was right. This book quickly and simply explained how to set up a construction company's accounts and helped me turn two years worth of mis-input data into reliable reports. It also helped me develop a 10 page guide for the company's staff to use when entering invoices and payments.

The authors also have telephone support for reason prices although I have not yet needed to use them. They will also convert a Company's Quickbooks accounts into their suggested standard for a pretty reasonable fee.

I would highly recommend this book to small and medium sized construction companies. The book is wonderful, especially for non accounting types.

GREAT TEACHING/LEARNING TOOL!.......2004-05-25

I have been using this text for the last 2 years. It is truly "hands-on". It presents continuing exercises for multiple companies. It simulates day to day work activities as they would happen. Using this format also prompts both experienced and new learners to ask questions they may not think of. Both guided and independent exercises are provided. In the school environment, tests are also included for grading.

nice book, by a naughty person.......1998-09-07

This is a very nice book on the captive breeding of parrots. It was very much state of the art when it was written in 1991. It has probably got the best article on fig parrots that I have seen, and many other articles are good as well. Basically, it is a collection of 2-3 page articles on an exceptionally large number of species of parrots, many of which are quite rare. There are also a lot of good color photographs. The only comparable book that I can think of is Low's "Parrots Their Care and Breeding".

The book was written by Tony Silva, who was a very prominent bird breeder and conservationist when this book was written. He was subsequently convicted of smuggling endangered parrots. I believe that he is still in jail. Make your own judgement about whether you wish to do business with such a man, but it is a very good book regardless.

Different way to think about quilt designs.......2006-02-26

I loved this book!
It was very useful to get me thinking about quilt patterns differently. I enjoy making my own designs on graph paper, and this has inspired me to try some new ideas and techniques.

One of the things I don't enjoy about making a quilt is trying to get the seams to line up perfectly! With these designs, it doesn't seem to matter so much (although I haven't actually made one yet). Looking closely at the pictures of some of her quilts, it seems small mismatching doesn't detract from the design.

I don't particularly like many of the choices of fabrics - but they do help show the design.

Some additional pictures at the beginning, explaining the technique, would have been helpful. I needed to read a few times, and play with cutting up & coloring paper, before I really understood it.

If you've never made a quilt before, I wouldn't recommend starting with this book. It really only teaches about this one technique. But if you enjoy quilting, and want to start thinking of some different designs, this could be a great choice.

Frustrated.......2006-02-01

This book is a big dissappointment! I saw Rita Hutchens on Alex Anderson's quilting program and was intrigued with her technique, if not always the results. I downloaded the directions after the show and wanted to see more so I ordered the book, even though I did not care for the work on the cover.
The photo illustrations for turning the tubes are pathetic, especially the diamond tubes, a very step by step DRAWING is an essential addition, that will probably not ever be added. The photos show various views of wadded up fabric strips. While it may be useful to see that this is indeed what you will have to work with, it is of no help in achieving the goal. The later drawings are adequate, but where we especially need them is in the very beginning.
The projects for which there are directions are not the ones which intrigue me, rather the examples in a long section, at least a third of the book, at the end, are those that are most fascinating, many, many kaleidoscope quilts with no directions for how these were achieved. If only they coulld have included the directions for just one kaleidoscope quilt! Very, very frustrating!
She seemed like such a nice woman on the show, It is too bad she was not better served by her publishers! A strip of errata is wedged in at the end, so who knows what they haven't caught yet! Altogether not C&T Publishing's finest production!

Value Education has been the buzz of the system with the New Gen' kids. Paul's Book is highly appreciated and recommended in India too coz one of the reputed School has gone for the Translation of the book into Gujarati language so as to use the same as a Guide for Teachers and Parents for development of kids. As a mother of 3 small daughters and a prevention specialist, I thought this book was great. It gives easy, age appropriate answers for questions that parents may be uncomfortable answering because of the subject matter or lack of knowledge. It is a good way to start a conversation with your child.

This book is not your average parenting book! It is indexed topic by topic and divided: a kid's section and a teen's section for various parenting/child issues. If you find yourself stuck on what to say about a challenge you are having, there is no need to read an entire book - simply find the issue in the index and in just a few pages, you'll have suggestions for what to say AND what is best not to say.

The book is comprehensive, consise and really encouraging. I wish that I had found it 15 years ago...

Robin Kahn's new anthology, this one exclusively by women, plays with the notion that history can be written in advance. For the 700-page `Time Capsule: A Concise Encyclopedia by Women Artists' (New York, Creative Time and S.O.S., distributed by D.A.P., 1995), hundreds of women in the "international art community" were asked to submit a page or two, and as with Kahn's previous `Promotional Copy,' which was modeled on the Yellow Pages, anything received by deadline was printed: pictures, prose, and combinations thereof. Kahn is a painter, whose layered canvases of heat-transferred imagery of women, along with a pile of flatiron parts, were recently shown at Susan Inglett/I.C. Clearly, Kahn cares about women's work; she seems to have a keen eye, too, for noncompensated labor. `Time Capsule' has lots of prefatory material by its publishers explaining its public-art purpose, along with two full-fledged introductions, one a parable by Kathy Acker, the other, by Avital Ronell, a jargon-thickened discussion of encyclopedias, time capsules, and why art made by women necessarily defeats both (mutually exclusive) categories. But the anthology is most impressive as a massive demonstration of voluntarism, a kind of flexing of the muscles of solidarity, as at early W.A.C. meetings, though in `Time Capsule' things more or less stop at the point where the legal pad is passed around and everyone writes down her name.

Robin Kahn's work as an editor and an artist has entailed a close monitoring of the legacy of creative endeavors undertaken by women; at the same time she has continued to develop her own host of political themes. In Time Capsule: A Concise Encyclopedia by Women Artists, a hefty anthology she conceived and edited in 1995, writings and drawings submitted by women from around the world were arranged according to a charged lexicon, from "abstract porno" to "veils."

To commemorate the Beijing conference on women, artist Robin Kahn was asked to create a public art project using work from 500 artists around the world that would reflect the diversity of images and issues that make up women's lives. The result is Time Capsule: A Concise Encyclopedia by Women Artists (Creative Time/SOS International).
