useful info, no color pictures, hardcover, lightweight.......1999-10-01
500 pages, all B&W [not color]; hardcover, but light [~12 oz?], 4.5x7x1. Good intro section, 80 pages. maps are within the book, some full page, some smaller for details of city center, etc. Divided by geographical regions: Lima, 40pgs; North of Lima 40pg; Northern Peru, 70 pg; Arequipa & south, 35 pg; Lake Titicaca area 20 pg; Cusco area [includes Macchu Piccu etc, all the main Inca sites around Cusco] 45 pg; Central highlands 40pg; Amazon area, 30 pg. Travel tips, 25 pgs, good index of topics & maps. "tinted boxes" are little "essays" that are inserted into the flow of the more practical details, which are generally entertaining & informative. They may be as important as a "big picture" discussion of Macchu Picchu, to the fact that Pisac is known for a great place to buy beaded necklaces. I had no interest in the details on accomodations [hotels, eating, etc], as I was on an organized tour; but there are such things in there. also reviewed: Lonely Planet Peru, Rough guide Peru, and Insight guide Peru.
Book Description
Tom Dorsey, one of the most energetic and high-profile money managers on Wall Street, has written the ultimate guide for brokers who want to get ahead now and in the coming years. Dorsey shows brokers how to shape their practices, how to build a strong, enduring client base, and how to tackle new challenges as the market evolves over the next decade.
Customer Reviews:
A Great Book that covers various approaches to the business.......2005-12-24
Tom takes the time to interview different brokers with different approaches/business models showing there's more than one way to skin a cat as a broker. Yes Point and Figure Charting is referenced throughout the book but you don't need an understanding of it because it is secondary, even tertiary to the books thrust: the varying ways top brokers have built there businesses. Admittedly, I am a follower of Point and Figure and a subscriber of Dorsey Wright & Associates. His other books are based on Point and Figure and it would help to have that understanding in reading his trading strategies book. For someone seeking direction within our industry, this is a must as a reference.
There are better books.......2001-07-14
This book may have been published, just to be published, but not to provide any worthwhile information for such an inflated price. There are some great books out there by Nick Murray, Bill Bachrach and Steve Moeller. Save your money - Stay away from this one..
Self-serving and promotional--author should stick to charts.......1999-10-15
I agree with the rest of the reviews--this was one big brochure. The only thing it's good for is pushing the author's point and figure business.
Helps brokers become successful and investors make money.......1999-09-20
The book consists of interviews with some of America's best-know brokers. They go far in revealing incidents and secrets they acquired during their long experience. Tom Dorsey, himself no lesser expert, interviews them in a clever way. He compliments what they are saying and prompts them with cues that sometimes trigger more details than they may have wanted to give.
Written for the broker the book is highly accessible to the average investor. The many real-life examples and useful practical advice will help new brokers succeed and investors make money. The issues range from the appropriate emotional disposition "the key to success for any broker is confidence" to the utility of technical analysis "the beauty of the Point and Figure method is there is no room for subjectivity."
Dorsey's insights extend into the 21st century. He has a clear vision of what the new century (technology and the Internet) has in store for brokers and investors.
Not to be overlooked are the book's two Appendices. The first one gives summary information on 350 web sites for brokers. The second presents the basics of the Point & Figure Charting technique, something that no ones is to better suited to speak about than Dorsey himself.
An absolute must read for EVERY investment professional.......1999-09-10
In this age of increased competition from on line brokers and do-it yourselfers Tom Dorsey provides you with the tools to compete effectively and confidently. He provides you with ideas on prospecting, building relationships, using technical analysis, and even creating partnerships. If you plan to stay in the brokerage business you should plan to read this book.

"Encyclopedia" is a misnomer.......2003-11-26
I ordered this book as a gift for my 7th grade grandson. What I had in mind was a dog encyclopedia with a lot of pictures and information on various breeds. This book has no illustrations at all and is a topical guide to caring for your dog. Not exactly a coffee table attention getter (even for a seventh grader). For that matter, encyclopedias are usually long. This book is quite short.
For an adult who wants good practical advice about caring for a dog, its obviously very helpful. As a gift to a kid, its a dud.
Customer Reviews:
For those who want perfect piecing.......2007-07-25
Excellent book for those interested in "New York Beauty" type blocks. The cd includes exact-sized, paper piecing patterns for 6-8 quilts. (Normally paper piecing patterns for one quilt equal the price of this book.) The cd is EXTREMELY easy to use, just click on the picture of the quilt or block and you're done. They print out beautifully on your printer and off to the sewing machine you go. The book provides all the necessary info for fabric yardage, cutting and assembly plus helpful hints to ease cutting and assembly. Book also includes gallery of other quilts by author. Probably not a good choice for a beginning quilter due to the curved piecing required for new york beauty blocks.
Disappointed.......2007-06-13
I also bought this book because of the quilt on the cover of the book and feel the publishers were dishonest by not including the pattern for the quilt. I wrote to the publisher and they did send me a bonus CD but the pattern pieces are not the actual size as they are on the CD that is included with the book. The bonus CD does not say how much to enlarge the pieces.
Don't buy it for the front cover pattern!.......2007-05-20
I bought this book because I liked the pattern featured on the front cover [it's also featured on the back cover, the front cover of the CD, as well as the back cover of the CD] but while the authors or publishers were fond enough of that quilt to use it four times to encourage sales they did not include the pattern in the book or CD. Sure enough, there ARE other patterns included, just not that one.
This is just dishonest.
I felt strongly enough about this subject to write letters to the publishers and the authors. This type of unethical behaviour should not be rewarded with book sales. Unfortunately, it does not seem to be a "one time mistake" with the publisher, American Quilting Society - the summer issue of "American Quilter" features a beautiful blue and yellow paper pieced quilt on the cover but you're wasting your time and money if you actually expect to find that pattern included in the magazine.
I buy pattern books and magazines for the PATTERNS - if the book is not going to include the patterns shown it rather defeats the purpose for me.
A perfect and highly prized addition.......2007-05-10

A veritable forest.......2001-05-27
If you have ever been fascinated by this traditional pattern, you must have this book for your library. You will get your money's worth and then some. Before she ever gets to the 15 projects and their step-by-step instructions, Lois gives a history of the block, shows 48 different variations, and provides basics instructions for hand or strip piecing, appliqué or foundation. There is also a Gallery of quilts, both old and new, providing additional inspiration. Finally, on page 43, we start the projects designed for the book. They range from the simple paper pieced tree made with long strips for each layer of branches to the eye-popping pieced tree with more than 40 triangles. Each pattern is clearly explained with excellent graphics and written instructions. Many of the projects are small, allowing you to try different trees without making a lifetime commitment.
An extra bonus is the gorgeous quilting design that goes with Pine Star wallhanging, a classical beautiful combination of leaves, cones and swirls. It would make an equally impressive appliquéd border design.
Enhanced with a colorful gallery of quilts.......2001-03-18

Customer Reviews:
Great way to get the ideas flowing.......2001-11-16
I gave a 5-star review to a book that's a "companion" of sorts to this one, by the same author: "101 Ways to Make Your Child Feel Special." Both books are wonderful in that they give parents inspiration on affectionate acts to show a child that they're loved.
"101 Ways to be a Special Dad" has somehow additionally managed to capture the kinds of things that fall in a dad's special sphere. It's a lot more than just a re-hash of the same material.
I recommend this book to any father, as a way to keep focused on nurturing a child in those ways that only a dad can.
A great gift for a new Dad.......2000-06-22
I gave this book to my husband after the birth of our second child. I was really impressed and touched by some of the activities suggested in the book. Some were so simple, yet things we don't think about when going about our busy lives. I think any Dad would enjoy reading it, but especially someone becoming a Dad for the first time.
Book Description
Against All Hope is Armando Valladares' account of over twenty years in Fidel Castro's tropical gulag as a result of his philosophical and religious opposition to communism. He gives a picture of the Cuba that he lived in and tells of how his deep Christian faith kept him from abandoning hope during the most evil treatment.
Customer Reviews:
Makes Shawshank seem like a Club Med.......2007-10-15
Another Amazon reviewer got it right when he wrote that this book should be given to all one's deluded friends sporting hip "Che" T-shirts. This eye-opening, stomach-churning account of the author's 22 years in Cuban prisons, the conditions of which make Shawshank seem like a Club Med, demolishes the romanticized memory of "freedom fighters" like Che and exposes the lie that Castro's Revolution created a socialist paradise. And it highlights Communism's inability to understand or erase one of the most important traits of human nature: our hunger for individual freedom and personal dignity.
Valladares wastes no time plunging us into a hell Dante himself could barely have imagined - on page one he is abducted in the middle of the night by the political police on trumped-up charges (having been denounced, he feels, by a jealous coworker for his disapproval of Castro's embrace of Communism), and before his prison odyssey is over, he endures and observes the worst extremes of totalitarian repression. The tension and the drama never let up, and often reach the breaking point. The litany of sadistic human rights abuses goes on page after page, every page; the degree of physical and psychological cruelty is so incomprehensible as to nearly defy belief. And yet Valladares and others maintain an almost superhuman strength of character and will to live that are inspirational and humbling. Amazingly, there are even flashes of humor and an ultimate triumph in this maddening and disturbing memoir.
Against All Hope is one of the most gripping books you will ever read. It has a compelling social conscience and an inspirational message of hope, faith, courage, determination, and even love, and it will leave you with a changed perspective on yourself and the world.
Cuban paradise.......2007-07-05
Give a copy of this book to all your friends wearing Che t-shirts. After so many descriptions of beatings and hunger strikes, you become numb to the next ones. I recall the AI campaigns in the 70s-80s to send letters and postcards to the Cuban and Soviet embassies just to remind them that the world was watching. Sadly today AI has degenerated into just another wacko outfit. The UN comes in for a beating of its own in this book, as it just sat back and closed its eyes, passing resolutions against Israel and other nonsense instead of putting pressure on Cuba. This continues today with Zimbabwe, NK, and others.
Take a look at "The Aquariums of Pyongyang" for a look at the same song, different verse.
A conscience's prisioneer life in Cuba........2006-03-19
I read this book, translated to the portuguese, here in Brazil, some years ago. It's a book about the decades, who this Castro's victim was under prision in Cuba.A nightmare's life and for more then two decades.
The failures of this book really exists. At first, the author don't tells you nothing about cuban revolution. In fact, never there existed a battle in cuban revolution.Fulgencio Batista simple scaped, without a single shoot.A mafia's man, whithout a single drop of moral or courage. This was really the true Fulgencio Batista.
At second he doesn't tells you nothing about the sucess of castrism in latin America and the catholic church "liberation theology".Having nothing of liberation and nothing of theology, the catholic church in latin America became a marxist organization.
A Great Chronicle Of Castro's Achievements .......2006-02-19
Castro has now ruled across the terms of 10 US Presidents. The secret of his longevity is not his popularity with the Cuban people, but rather his ruthless suppression of any dissent or competition. Valladares provides a keyhole view into this world of true terror and depravity.
Behind the warm white beaches where libbies from around the world find paradise there exist prisons where the brutality is only equaled by that of Stalin, Saddam, Mao and a few others. Any yet, like the American press' refusal to admit the terrible atrocities of the Soviet Union, these are happening in our back yard.
Those who claim to be against abuse of prisoners or the imprisonment of those whose only crimes are peaceful protest or political unreliability should take an evening to read this book.
It is not a comforting book and evening reading may lead to sleepless nights for the routine horrors of Castro's prisons are the stuff of nightmares. Without assurances of its validity, this book reads like fiction in that it is difficult to conceive that so much could be inflicted on another human who poses no threat.
Highly recommended
should be read alongside orwell and wiesel.......2005-11-14
This is a great book. It should be given to every sap and sucker who somehow finds merit in Castro's Revolution. Valladares chronicles the absolute repression at the core of Castro's regime. The torture and executions at La Cabana and Isle of Pines prisons are among the most brutal and extensive cases of barbarism any government has ever devised. The next time some Oliver Stone or Michael Moore type tells you about Castro's achievements such as a "high literacy rate," give them this book. And remind them that this is one book you'll never see in Cuba, or in an American college classroom that romanticizes Castro's oppression. This is the real "Animal Farm," folks: a powerfully written nightmare of tyrannical cruelty and the deep spiritual resilience needed to pull through.

A hard book to read.......2001-09-05
When I read this book I had to put it down at least seven different times; the barbaric cruelty of the jailers was that upsetting. For little more than a token show of distaste for Marxism, Valladares was imprisoned under the harshest conditions imaginable. The mind numbing sadism goes on chapter after chapter until you can't imagine how a man could put up with it. Valladares, thru sheer faith and belief that he'll survive, finds a way to survive the drawer cells, the white room, the extended solitary confinement in total darkness, the sleep deprivation, the horrible food, the immersion in a lake of human excrement, the brutal beatings and having to witness fellow prisoners maimed and killed.
His health, particularly his lung tissue, was permanently damaged. The description of his injury and its aftermath in the wake of his attempt to escape made me wince repeatedly. Having been on crutches 15 times myself I could feel his pain. God bless Amnesty International for helping to spring this guy.
When I read about the excoriation that Ron Radosh and David Horowitz endure from their former communist comrades I want to suggest that the complinants go live in Cuba and ply their demogoguery there. Then they can do time in Castro's jails and give us their opinion about his glorious revolution.
Read "Guerilla Prince" by Geyer as a compliment to this book; it's the story of Castro's life. Fidel, whatta guy. Valladares adds to the extensive record of what a horrifying sadist we have ruling an island prison 90 miles from our shores. All American communists-progressives-socialists should read this book, for perspective if nothing else.
A Heart-Wrenching Experience!.......2001-07-04
My cousin was also imprisoned by Castro following the Bay of Pigs Invasion in the 60's. He refused (and still refuses)to speak about his experiences, so my aunt loaned me the Spanish version of this book several years ago. I was fascinated but must admit that I was totally unprepared for the brutality and cruelty that those prisoners must endure. I cried the entire time, and the memory of what that book described will haunt me for the rest of my life. Now I want my children to read this account so that they will appreciate their heritage and the freedom that we enjoy in the United States.
Monumental, Irrefutable, Unforgettable........2000-09-13
In this monumental testimonial of his twenty-two years as a Cuban political prisoner, Valladares graphically recounts the executions, beatings and sadistic tortures that are a commonplace in Cuba's prisons. During his "travels" within the vast Cuban prison complex, Valladares crosses paths with the "Plantados," the brave men and women who refused "reeducation" inside Castro's jails, and who paid a terrible price as a result. More than a recounting of the horrors of the Cuban gulag, this book is an inspiring testimonial to the capacity of faith and love to overcome hatred and utter moral depravity. Sixteen years after its original publication, Against All Hope remains the authoritative English-language account of the depredations committed by the Castro regime. It adds yet another devastating chapter to the growing body of documentation on the crimes of totalitarianism in the 20th century. No one who reads this book will ever again see Fidel Castro and his revolution in the same light.
Complete propagandist hogwash.......2000-05-15
This tome (while imaginatively translated) is no more than a facile fabrication underscored throughout by a clear anti-Cuba political agenda. Read this book if you remain hooked on the Cold War and need ammunition as you continue your backwards march into battle with a long forgotten, inconsequential enemy.
Against All Hope.......2000-04-28
I read this book a few years ago and the images of heroism and injustice have lingered with me ever since. Valladares' account of his time in prison is a rare first-person account of the horrors of a tyrannical government. A truly outstanding work that helped me understand a world totally alien to me and most Americans.
Customer Reviews:
An important chronicle, a serious historical contribution........1999-08-30
Herman Langbein is one of the best known Auschwitz historians, and this book chronicles, in painstaking detail, acts of resistance and defiance that took place in the nazi concentration camps. The book recounts simple acts of humanity between prisoners, far reaching acts of organised resistance (for example using the nazi's obsession with bureaucracy - people selected for extermination were saved by altering forms), to open acts of insurrection towards the end of the war.
Langbein, himself a key member of Combat Group Auschwitz, uses all the rigour and objectivity we expect of the serious historian. The book is an important contribution in these days when those who survived to bear witness are fewer and where the accounts by important witnesses such as Filip Muller, Hans Marsalek and Eugen Kogon, are out of print.
This book is especially important as evidence to counter the Holocaust denialists, and those who condemned Jewish and other people for "acting like sheep".
