Book Description
This unique and handy guide has proven to be the favorite of begging floaters and skilled river rats alike. Author and outfitter Doug Wheat combines ten years of research on the geology, wildlife, plantlife, and human adventure of Colorado's rivers with detailed maps, firsthand observations, and vital information such as water flow, government regulations, and river use patterns. The result is a thorough, readable guidebook that shares an expert's knowledge and passion on every page.

Outdated.......2003-10-07
Smack my hands for not noting that the publication date on this book is 1983! 20 years can make a huge impact on the put in and take out points of a river, and even on the river itself. Drat. It has some handy maps, and the descriptions are nice, but I wish there were a better, current resource out there.
Mixed Bag Need to suppliment.......1997-08-15
This book is a mixed bag. It can't decide whether it is a history book, a guide book, a touring book, or a floater's book. It is interesting, and I am glad I got it, but it doesn't serve the purpose that I was looking for of providing good information on river travel. Lots of information on river history and early travelers, but if you were looking for a river guide you are going to have to suppliment

Book Description
A unique guide that combines the best of traditional value theory with an innovative approach to assessing value in low or non-dividend paying stocks
In the 1990s, America's focus on productivity and innovation led to huge gains in technology, communication, and healthcare stocks, and contributed to the transformation of the U.S. stock market from a value (dividend-paying orientation) to a growth (nondividend-paying) bias. During this time, forward thinking value managers began to develop analytical tools for valuing nondividend paying stocks. These tools allowed them to evaluate and identify the best investments in both traditional and nontraditional value sectors. At the forefront of this movement was author Nancy Tengler who, along with Noel DeDora, developed "Relative Value Discipline," an approach-which combines two proven methods for valuing growth stocks: Relative Dividend Yield and Relative-to-Price Sales. The combination of these approaches allows individuals to invest across the investment universe regardless of dividend policies. New Era Value Investing introduces the proven method known as Relative Value Discipline by combining the excitement of developing a new investment discipline with the lessons learned through the application of this new methodology in the real world. In addition to providing an insider's look at an investment manager's experience in adopting a new investment approach, this book creates a context for understanding the transformation of the U.S. economy, and offers expert insights beyond those of traditional value theory.
Nancy Tengler (San Francisco, CA) is President and Chief Investment Officer of Fremont Investment Advisors. She is coauthor of Relative Dividend Yield: Common Stock Investing for Income and Appreciation (Wiley: 0-471-53652-0). She has appeared on numerous financial radio and television programs, including CNN/fn and is frequently quoted in financial publications such as The Wall Street Journal.

All but useless for indvidual investors.......2005-07-21
For many years Geraldine Weiss has published a newsletter that identifies stocks trading in the upper range of their historic dividend yields. This method succesfully identifies undervalued stocks.
Tengler took this a step further, comparing stocks' dividend yields to their historic relationship to the yield of the market as a whole. Like Weiss' less sophisticated technique, stocks selected in such manner will, on average, outperform the market. She then goes on to ask and answer the question of how to apply a similar technique to stocks with little or no history of dividend payments. (Hence the "New Era" of the title). The answer is to employ the Relative Price to Sales Ratio.
It is easy enough to obtain price-to-sales ratios for individual stocks, which are routinely published in a number of sources. With a little work, an individual investor can then compare a PSR to the PSR of the market as a whole, obtaining the RPSR. But actual application of this technique requires that you obtain the entire range of RPSRs going back years, i.e. "construct the RPSR charts for each company." (p.48). How is this done? The very next sentence tells the tale, in parentheses: "(This information is generally only available to institutional investors through services such as Compustat)."
Oh.
I feel much as I would had I bought some software through a mass market outlet only to find it runs only on an esoteric operating system used by the Department of Defense.
I won't deny that the ancillary criteria used to winnow the complete universe of low RPSR stocks is of some value (hence the two stars instead of one), but that is like saying you bought a dictionary because you like the way it covers "X", "Y" and "Z".
"New Era Value Investing" is essentially marketing material aimed at convincing trustees for institutional funds to place those funds under Tengler's management. If you are not responsible for investing millions of dollars of other people's money, save your own and look for something better.
The first book I've returned to Amazon.......2005-05-17
Don't buy this book if you do not have access to historical monthly price-to-sales ratios. The author even admits about half-way through the book that non-institutional investors may not have access to this information. I searched all over the web looking for it and was not able to find it. The closest I could get was Ben Stein and Phil DeMuth's website. And that is a quarterly, not monthly, ratio.
The checklist in the book as helpful, but if you really want to use the author's methods, you must have access to historical monthly price-to-sales ratios.
Article Stretched Into a Book.......2003-08-24
The book was okay. However, I thought the author threw in too much unnecessary information in order to keep the book from only being 30 pages long! For instance, do we really need a rehashing of the history of value investing? Also, there are lots and lots of charts, which I think is overkill.
Other than that, the book is fine!
Relying on Fundamentals - Back to Basics.......2003-03-31
One of the best and most informative pieces on fundamental investing. A well written, step by step overview of how to look at and analyze a company's future prospects, while not paying too much currently. Following this formula will certainly help readers outperform overall equity indices, over long periods of time. A wonderful strategy for retirement plans, college savings accounts, and any fund with a time horizon of three years or more. What you will learn from this book is how to find those companies that have become fallen angels; once the high flyers, now the value stocks, and how to assess there future prospects.
When All Else Fails - Go Back To Fundamentals.......2003-03-28
One of the best pieces on fundamental investing ever written. This is more than just a "story" about what an accomplished investor has done throughout her career. It is truly a roadmap for creating a disciplined investment strategy; one that works now, has worked historically, and will continue to work through any market environment.
Breaking away from some of the more traditional and over simplified strategies involving just dividend analysis, this "New Era" approach allows an investor to slightly broaden the "universe" of stocks to capture those with slightly higher growth potential.
This type of strategy is appropriate in every investor's portfolio. For institutional investors, this could be your core strategy. For individuals, this discipline can become your overall governing approach to reviewing stocks.
This book is well written, easy to understand, and is complete with charts to help explain the very detailed points Ms. Tengler makes throughout the book.
Highly recommended to all investors, even to those interested in technical analysis.

Don't waste your money.......2005-08-10
Within just 30 minutes of reading this, I immediately decided to return it. If you're an undergrad majoring in accounting like I am, this book is totally pointless because they don't present any new info that you haven't already heard from your professors, alumni, or recruiters. Seriously this is hardly an insider guide; all the info in the book can easily be researched online by yourself. If you're smart enough to consider a career in accounting then you should be smart enough to find this info on the web or by talking to recruiters at your accounting club on campus. I'm especially disappointed with the info on the Big 4, it's really nothing but generic info. Bottom line is this is garbage, don't waste your time or money.

Book Description
Bean counters. Ebenezer Scrooge. Mention accounting, and until recently these would be the images people typically conjured. Who knew that the accounting industry could be the source of so much intrigue, that the public would open the newspaper each morning to eagerly read about the inner workings of accounting firms?
Of course, we're referring to the scandals that have rocked the accounting world and contributed to the greatest undermining of trust in corporations and the markets in recent memory. And, yet, despite the scandals, now is not a bad time to be looking for an entry-level job in the Big Four. Clients need accountants in bad times as well as good, and Big Four firms always need bodies to do the lower-level scut work; in return, employees get a wealth of exposure to accounting issues, as well as a Big Four name on their resume, which will help them in a variety of business careers. That said, check out this brand new guide, which focuses on opportunities among the Big Four.
You will learn:
- How Deloitte Touche Tohmatsu, Ernst & Young, KPMG, and PricewaterhouseCoopers have survived the demise of Arthur Andersen
- Who of the Big Four now ranks number one
- What other smaller players line up behind the Big Four
- What the latest trends in the industry are, especially in the aftermath of the Enron scandal
- What it's like to be a staff or senior audit accountant as well as a staff tax accountant
- What the hours and the compensation are like
- How to impress your interviewers
- More!

Stability in Accounting.......2003-04-10
I've made a career change from marketing into accounting, and it was the right decision. This guide came to my attention at the right time as well. I've been entertaining the thought of going into business for myself, but of course now that I've read this guide, i better understand the attraction for going to work for one of the big firms. i've got interviews set up with all of them and am looking forward to eventually getting an offer. this will be a good way to gain solid experience in the field and work with Fortune 500 companies, make the right kind of contacts, so that i can strike out on my own, later on down the road. A good read and definitely helpful in preparing for my interviews. THanks!
Student in Finance Exploring Careers.......2003-02-20
This book really helped me evaluate a career in accounting and whether or not I want to pusue that. As a student, I'm still in the exploratory phase of my career development and am looking at a lot of different options. I was a little wary of going for accounting due to all of the recent scandal surrounding the industry. I thought that no firms would even be hiring and that accountants would take on the reputation that lawyers have suffered for decades. But this guide gave me a much better idea of what's really doing on right now in the industry than the media had. The author of the guide seemed to really know what they were talking about. I liked the "On the Job" section the best. It described specific job functions and what they actually do each day. I'm still not sure if I want to ultimately be an accountant, but this guide gave me a much better idea of what an accountant's lifestyle is really like. I feel like whatever my decision is, it will be much better informed.
Snagging a Job with the Big Four.......2003-02-20
Thanks Wetfeet for providing me with a guide that I hope will give me the advantage when I look into getting a job with one of the Big Four. Whether good times or bad, accounting is a skill I'm glad to have since it's always in need. I especially appreciated all of the real people profiles, days in the life, etc. I can definitely see myself in one of these roles.

Book Description
There's been a snake-napping at the River Heights Zoo, and all clues about the thief seem to point in my good friend Charlie's direction. But why would Charlie want to steal a snake? I'm not convinced he's the perpetrator, but with all the circumstantial evidence that keeps popping up, the cops are on the other side of the fence.
Speaking of snakes, George's younger brother, Scott, has been slithering around a lot lately, all sneaky-like. He's not acting like himself, but his lips are sealed about what's wrong. Do these mysteries have anything to do with each other?
Stick around. I'm about to find out!

Great photos + information on (Agkistrodon Piscivorus).......2000-04-08
This book gives an accurate depiction of the snakes behavior and habits, very educational and uses layman terms making it easy to understand but yet full of scientific data. I rate this book a 3 on a scale of 1 to 5 due to the topic of its contents is dry to me. However this type of thing may really excite you. If you enjoy snakes I would recommend you check it out especially if you live in the southeastern United States due to your close proximity with this snake.

Customer Reviews:
Love this book!.......2007-09-27
I love this book...the author has such a simple way of explaining things...i will be ordering a sewing machine soon and cannot wait to get started...i would highly recommend this book for beginners like me!
This book made me sew!.......2007-09-20
I bought the book because I'm a fan of the author weblog...And I wasn't disappointed at all! Since I bought it it's on my bedstand and I read a bit of it everynight before sleeping. Made me learn how to use better my sewing machine, and pushed me to sew a few hours every day. All the problems I had for years because I learnt to sew in a too strict way were solved. I'm really enjoyinfg sewing now!
It's full of ideas, the editing is just oh so perfect, I love the fresh pictures. For the moment it's my favourite craft book ever :)
cute, cute ideas, great for beginners.......2007-09-18
wonderfully put-together book; great for beginning sewers. Very basic, well written instructions and great ideas. Would love for this author to write another, more advanced book.
Pretty Nice.......2007-09-14
I liked this book. I have a bit of sewing experience, and it was able to lay some new things out for me in a way that I could understand it (except for bias tape, that explanation was crazy!), and the patterns are cute and nice and Quick! The only problem I would mention, and the only reason I didn't givbe this 5 stars, and because all of the patterns this book includes have to be enlarged to use them. That is such a pain!
Excellent Guide for Intermediate Sewers.......2007-09-11
So I've done the beginners basics classes and I've learned how to read sewing patterns (this is VERY important to know if you buy this book). I don't make cloths, but love making soft toys, totes & bags, and pillows & home decor items, ect....which this book is full of. Now I'm in about my third year of sewing, you know not a beginner anymore but not quit as experienced as I would like to be. This book was exactly what I needed. The sewing basics section at the beginning was a fairly quick read, taking me an evening at a slow, off and on pace and amy is very funny and captivating in the way she writes. I found that what I already knew she gave me a fresh look on, and what I did not know her directions and diagrams made for an easy understanding. All the patterns are extremely cute and dispite other reviews, I found them easy to read and understand, but if you like things very text bookish, amy does not write this way. Her directions are written more like she was speaking with you, I personally perfer this method of writing and have an easier time comprehending the directions this way. As long as you've learned to read patterns correctly, I don't think you should have any problems at all following her direcitions on the patterns in this book, but again if you like things very text bookish and get caught up on numbers and measurements this may not be for you. A perfect cutting measurement is not really important with many of her projects, just a rough estimate,a ruler, and some creative license will be necessary for most of her patterns. Which I think is just peachy because I'm all for anything that will give me Creative freedom, but does not leave me alone to figure it all out for myself. I also think this book will be very good for someone that wants to start making there own patterns but it not quit sure where to start with that process, it's not really a section in the book but after reading it you pick up on whats important in making your own patterns, which was very exciting for me personally. And I think a lot of the patterns will be very easy to rework into your own unique patterns. Anyway thats my .02.

WONDERFULL.......2007-05-31
This is a great book for all the persons that like to learn sewing. Is very easy to understand and is GREAT and usefull.
Same as Photo Guide book by this publisher........2006-12-29
I was not very impressed with the information contained in this book. It started out with basic skills and jumped to advanced sewing. There was very little information for the average ability seamstress. Be aware that the book, "New Sewing Essentials" and "The Complete Photo Guide to Sewing" are by the same publisher and are virtually the same. Many identical photos and information.
Seeing is believing.......2006-11-28
I love the pictures in this book. They are very clear and go a long way in showing you what you should be doing and how it should look. This book is very helpful regarding the basics of sewing.
Great for even experienced sewers.......2006-04-09
While not for the complete beginner, this book explains all the tools, tips and methods from basic to complex. Great for the amateur or hobby sewer who may not have learned the finer points of finishing seams, advanced sewing techniques and all the possibilities available with various machine attachments and special tools.
If you want to take your sewing skills to the next level, this book is a great place to start. Highly recommended and packs a lot of information for the price. Also a great reference book.
Very good reference book.......2005-10-28
This book includes basic and more advanced techniques. It is a practical book. I bought along with "The Complete Photo Guide to Sewing" and "The new Step by Step Decorating Projects" both from Singer also. Although there is repeated information from one book to the next, there is also additional information in each one. For example the "Complete Photo..." includes information found on this book AND int "The new...Decorating Pr..", but it also has addional information and projects. So it worked for me as adding more info as I kept advancing from one book to the next. In the end, you will end up with your own personal techiniques (what works for one person doesn't work for the other,) or simply because you can come up with your own ideas, but nontheless all three books are good to have, especially if you own a Singer Sewing maching.

Small photos and lots of errors........1998-11-04
This book is 10% morning glories and moonflowers, and 90% other flowering vines. There are numerous errors in the names and species identification of morning glories. Many books have confused the Ipomoea species for years, and this book continues that misinformation while adding more. I even found one called two different species in the same name! The photographs, while full color, are unfortunately very small - mostly 2 by 3 inches. But there is good information on growing them, as well as a lot of data on other flowering vines. Knowing first that the morning glories and the moonflowers are often misnamed and sometimes totally impossible, the book may have some value. As a consolation, aside from the reference "Hortus Third," practically every book with a section on morning glories will misidentify at least one.

Mary-Elaine Jacobsen has helped families transform their childrens behavior using a unique approach that centers on the concept of Privileges On/Privileges Off. If a child misbehaves, they can no longer enjoy any of their favorite activities until they make amends. Dr. Jacobson comprehensively explains each part of the program, with age-appropriate tips, and guides parents through: Identifying desired behavior Conveying expectations and consequences to children Revoking all privileges when the child crosses the line Having the child earn back privileges by apologizing for or correcting behavior. Parents dont need a nanny, they need an experienced licensed professional who can give them a system they can use to put an end to tantrums, arguing, and defiance.

Empowering, Inspiring, Real --- Practical Advice For Empowering Today's Parents!.......2006-02-26
This gem is well written and includes practical and action-oriented plans for restoring balance to family life. While other books try to explain theory and behavior, this book focuses on parenting actions and reminds us that our job as parents is to raise our children to become healthy functioning adults. The book makes it easy to see how certain unmanaged behaviors, when allowed to continue, develop into habits and then permanent personality traits. And these personality traits contribute to tomorrow's social problems, distressful workplaces, and dysfunctional families. In clear and simple terms, Dr. Jacobsen explains where to focus our time and attention, how to redirect our child's behavior, and when to make these changes in our parenting behaviors.
This book will help those who feel pressured to give their children every advantage but have forgotten their primary job as parents: to support our children in becoming respectful, caring and responsible adults. The book outlines a step-by-step plan and reminds us of the basics that can be easily lost in our busy lives. With this renewed perspective on your parenting responsibilities, you will no longer be confused between rights and privileges.
The Brat Stops Here! empowers parents with a program that makes sense, restores honor to family life, and most importantly, maintains the dignity of our children.
