Customer Reviews:
Shameful attempt at self-promotion.......2003-09-20
This book is nothing but a thick marketing brochure. It discusses the basics of financial planning, but it incorporates the authors' own subjective analysis and opinions, which, based on their reasoning, often times borderlines dangerous. It leaves unrealistic expectations on the readers with no real academic backing and no real insight or intelligent commentary. Rather a lot of ignorant comments, hypocritical recommendation, and poor order of discussion. I feel by reading this book, you may actually becomer dumber than had you read nothing at all. The authors clearly designed this book to be a celebration of self-promotion.
Normally, I give books away when I'm done with them, but I would be insulting whoever received this by doing so - so into the garbage it goes! Please don't waste your money on this one - you're far better off with books by Burton Malkiel, William Bernstein, Larry Swedroe, Jonathan Clements, Thomas Stanley.
Keep Looking for a GOOD investment guide.......2003-09-03
Wealthbuilding?? You've GOT to be kidding ! If you've never read a book on investing & have NO idea about the basics, then perhaps there might be something here for you. Fully 3/4 of the book is devoted to anecdotal evidence of how wonderful the authors are at investing their client's money. Their advice? Hire a professional, natch ! Written in 2002 they describe the wonderful gains for the clients in the early '90s in the market. What about recently? Not so impressive, I'd venture the guess.
There is almost no statistical evidence for their strategies, which are given in the most rudimentary terms. How can they write only 1 short page about an invaluable investment strategy like Irrevocable Life Insurance Trusts?
This is a simple salesman's Thump N' Sell book citing trivial truths & wishful thinking, just like Wade Cook & The Rich Dad books. All FLUFF & NO substance.
You would do better by buying Jane Bryant Quinn's 'Making the Most of Your Money' & "The Intelligent Investor" by Benjamin Graham & "Bogle on Mutual Funds" by John C. Bogle.
Real life people, real examples and NO FLUFF.......2003-01-29
Building wealth? What does that mean to you? For each of us, it actually has a different definition. That's what I love about Reiser's book on estate planning and wealth. It first asks you to define what YOU mean by wealth (for example, it could mean living comfortably and close together with your children or friends or relatives, it could mean owning a deserted island paradise and living in splendid solitude.)
The real-life stories make the concepts of building wealth easy to grasp. I don't know about you, but I relate better to stories that show HOW and WHAT real people do, than reading formulas and dry advice. And I am not the only one who prefers real-life examples; look at the success of the Kiyosaki (Rich Dad) books. But this book has not only stories but real worksheet examples. No fluff here.
Another fine feature are the examples of what-if, based on the new tax laws (as of this writing--they will change again of course.) The examples allow you to understand how to work the system best to your benefit as allowed by law.
As tax time approaches, and I have to reassess my financial health, I know I will be using this book to help me plan my future.
HIGHLY RECOMMENDED
Not satisfied at all!!.......2002-07-25
I bought this book based on the great reviews it received. I made it through half of the book and had to stop. My biggest complaint is they fail to include results in their clients portfolio's after 1999.
They are big fans of equity investing (of course they work for a big brokerage). In one of their stories, they berate a former advisor of one of their newer clients for having them in bonds. Not that the percentage overall was too high. But, that the advisor had them in bonds. Well, the authors didn't mentioned where the client sits today with the heavy equity position the authors put them into.
Being financial advisors (brokers) for UBS Paine Webber is no different from being a broker at Morgan Stanley, ML, or Smith Barney.
I found this to be a waste of my money. I thought Suze Ormans books were far better than this book. A lot more honest too.
What you will NOT find. . ........2002-07-17
Some crucial elements are LEFT OUT of this book. If you just want to read some "happy happy" account of this book, check out the other reviews, but I'm trying to give something constructive here.
First of all, consider the bias: these authors are both on the payroll of PaineWebber. Now that's not necessarily BAD, but it's probably going to color their assessment of how to build wealth. So first up, they insist that attaining a secure retirement is too complicated for the average person, so you need to hire professional help. Now again, that's not necessarily bad advice, but it probably isn't advice that is going to suit everybody. And of course they're going to steer you exclusively toward stocks and bonds because that's how they and others like them get paid.
I gave it three stars because indeed I found their concept of "You Inc." helpful. Also, they push modern portfolio theory to the max, and that's also a prudent way to go for the conservative long term investor. But what I found lacking was their total neglect of real estate. After all, the book is subtitled "Investment strategies for retirement and estate planning". Don't you think real estate might fit in there SOMEWHERE? At least there should be some discussion about rental property or buying your own home and paying off the mortgage. Isn't it a large piece of financial security in retirement to have your own home paid for? Since "wealthbuilding" is the subject, don't you think rental properties deserve at least SOME mention? After all, the real estate millionaires in this country far outnumber those who made their wealth in stocks/bonds. So consider the bias: you got a couple of PaineWebber guys pushing ONE ASPECT of wealthbuilding. They focus on financial planning and modern portfolio theory to generate consistent longterm gains for the conservative investor and the theory that they give in the book is highlighted by numerous "case studies" of real people putting these principles into practice. Very good. That one thing they do, they do well. But for a comprehensive approach to "Wealthbuilding", I'd look elsewhere. At the very least, supplement this information with the info that it is lacking.

thanks for the help.......2005-07-20
This book helped me so much the last time I went camping. I was always so scared to bring my dog with me...too many variables. My friend told me about this book and that it might help. It told me everything I really needed to know in a simplistic way. Gary Hoffman didn't make me feel any less intelligent for my lack of knowledge about camping with my dog. I got all the information I needed and the trip was a success. Next time I just might stay longer!
Hiking With Your Dog, is extremely helpful..........2005-06-09
Gary Hoffman's book, Hiking With Your Dog, is extremely helpful when backpacking with the family dogs. I consider myself a well informed person, but having information available in print is invaluable. It's not always easy to keep your facts straight while dogs bark, children yell and husbands fish. I would have liked even more information. I'm not concerned about typos. Content presented in a concise and simple manner, to me, means the difference between a wonderful camping trip and a disaster.
Informative read.......2005-06-06
This book is delightful presented as well as informative due to the very artistic and funny bone tickling illustrations. The author is obviously writing about something he has done many times and holds especially dear to his heart. There are two "loves" in this book - the rewarding pleasure of canine companionship enhancing the awesome grandeur of outdoor experience. A joy to read!
Poorly written, unhelpful.......2003-07-23
This is a very disappointing book. Almost anyone with dog experience and an 8th grade education could do a better job. The author states in his foreword that he makes no apologies for spelling or grammar mistakes. No excuse! There are errors of punctuation, grammar, and spelling throughout. This might be excusable if the information were of any help, but it's not. About 80% of the information is self-evident, 19% is speculative personal opinion, and only 1% is anything I was unaware of (and I'm not exactly a dog expert). The number of pages is misleading, as there are many blank pages or pages with almost no text, silly cartoons, or big type. The material could fit into about 20 pages of double-spaced text.
Don't waste your money on this book! I recommend Charlene Bell's book instead.
No so bad.......2003-03-19
This is the first "Dog hiking"-book I've seen that has something for the more difficult situations. The book has even short chapter about things like fording and bouldering. It still has the basics too.
No photos, just drawn pictures. Not very informational ones, except the ones about first aid.
Good book, but a bit short. Especially if you do longer, overnight hikes in difficult terrain. LaBelle's book "Guide to backpacking with your dog" is definetly better if you do shorter walks that last only a day. If you decide to buy it, avoid 1st edition. The 2nd edition is definetly improved version.

A Good Addition to the Quilt Library.......2004-05-13
This shouldn't be your only quilting book, and it probably shouldn't be your first quilting book, but it is a very handy addition to a quilter's bookshelf.
Like all Better Homes and Gardens books, it is well designed and beautifully photographed, very accurate, and practical. There are more pictorial quilts (both pieced and applique) than there are traditional blocks. They are organized in categories (holidays, trees, retro, etc.) so that you can easily grab this book and find a block for a particular need. For some reason, the traditional blocks are given nontraditional names, so it can be hard to find a particular design in this category.
Blocks are only occasionally shown in settings, but each is presented with a photograph and a good diagram that clearly shows all the pieces and the order of construction.
Each block is given in a 4" size, and in a traditional way (that is, you have to make templates and add the seam allowance you prefer when you use the templates). You have to be able to do the math yourself if you want to change the size. However, I made the "Linked Squares" design with 12" blocks with no difficulty. A good quilting ruler helps with this. Experienced quilters who like to do quick cutting and paper foundation piecing shouldn't have trouble adapting these patterns to those techniques, but all the instructions are traditional. They are good, clear, instructions, though, including directions to calculate yardage and make templates.
Most of the projects -- as distinct from the blocks themselves -- use just a few blocks. I liked that; they give you ideas for things to do with practice blocks, or with that block that turned out not to be enjoyable enough to use for an entire quilt, not to mention nice quick gifts. I also appreciated the variety of styles. You could make dozens of small projects and quilts from this book without feeling that you were doing the same thing over and over.
Overall, this is a nice, useful quilt book.
nice for someone who likes to look at pictures of quilts.......2004-03-04
First of all, I am an experienced quilter who wanted some new ideas. This book has beautiful pictures. Most of the blocks are applique, and only 30 are actual projects, mostly not quilts! But my main gripe is that there are no measurements for the piecing. So if you wanted to make a square you see, you would have to either sit down and work math for a while, or you could trace the diagram that some blocks have (not all designs have a diagram) and add a 1/4 inch on each side, but then your blocks would be quite small. I was very excited when I ordered this book, and very disappointed when I recieved it, I am sending it back tomorrow. good luck, I am ordering Nancy Martin's 365 quilt blocks today, hopefully that is better.
Amazing ideas.......2004-02-11
I am not highly experienced or a complete amateur at quilting blocks, so I speak from that amount of knowledge. This book is filled with amazing ideas. I have more quilting books than I care to admit but this will be the one I use over and over. It gives ideas for just about any quilt block you could want, flowers, sports, alphabet, months of the year, shoes to flat tops. No quilters library should be without this book. You can't go wrong.
Good Ideas, but not for the beginner.......2004-01-17
This book has a lot of wonderful blocks, but there lacks the directions to be easy to use for a beginner. All the patterns are on the same page as the picture with basic construction directions. There is 2 patterns to a page. There are a lot of both pieced and appliquéd designs. All the patterns are for 4 inch blocks. They can easily be enlarged, but the smaller designs allow for smaller projects, something that can be hard to find. I love the book, but beginners beware.
What an awesome book!.......2004-01-13
This book was so amazing! It had about every quilt block you could think of. Granted it's not for the inexperienced. Not many instructions for the piecing. But if you have done much peicing, you can figure it out. Highly recommended book!

Parent friendly (maybe even a little too much so!).......2005-02-14
The fact that Dr. Green is both a pediatrician and a father makes him highly qualified to offer hands-on expertise on raising children.
This book simply highlights common mistakes and introduces some new ideas (many of which come from the parents of his little patients) - nothing ground-breaking or revolutionary here, just some solid, sensible advice condensed down into a single book.
I can't say I agree with Dr. Green on everything (e.g. although he doesn't advocate spanking, he seems to consider it almost inevitable) but this book is much more sensible and realistic than most others of its kind.
Easy to read, doesn't judge or preach, isn't absolute, and tackles a lot of issues (not just behavioural). All in all, a good investment.
Helpful and Refreshing.......2004-12-15
I found this book to be not only very helpful but really refreshing.
Personally, I don't find it permissible for myself as a parent to hit my child at any time. But I still appreciated the fact that the author goes out on a politically incorrect limb and states that in the real world, in loving families, it does happen. He then address the issue in light of that fact. My personal belief is hitting would be counter-productive in the long-run. Children are professional imitators -- why create that whole can of worms to be opened later? But making that mistake doesn't constitute child abuse, it just isn't very clever. The other suggestions he makes, which other reviewers have labelled abusive, are about stopping anger from escalating. If everyone did this real child abuse would actually be prevented.
His main message is don't be drawn into battle. And he gives advice on how to achieve that. I've found it very helpful and been feeling really confident as of late. Since I've been trying out his suggestions, e.g., distraction, my 19-month-old daughter hasn't had a full-blown tantrum yet. Instead of dreading entering the two-stage, I'm now looking forward to it.
All the positive said, even though it is a nice change not having the author sound sanctimonious, I do find the author's tone somewhat off-putting. It is a bit rough?? Too familiar?? Can't exactly place my finger on it, but it doesn't warrant that 'my bible' status. So I giving it four instead of five stars. Plus, I think the (excellent) ideas in this book are pretty wide-spread, so this particular book isn't really a rare gem. Still, it's clear and very easy to read. I really enjoyed it and I would definitely highly recommend this book.
Helped me find a way to stay sane.......2002-10-30
I loved this book. It was so down to earth and practical. I had been reading The Baby Book, and was into attachement parenting. Then my son hit 14 months and life suddenly kicked up a gear. I was tired, worn out from lack of sleep, suffering from no grown-up time with my partner, and shocked at the sudden change in my child. I felt like I was failing and struggling. My sister mentioned Dr Greens book, and I am pleased she did. It acknowledged that parenting is a tough job and kids can be horrible and show some pretty shocking behaviour. I realised I wasn't failing, my kid was normal!! This book uses humour and gives practical advice on how to deal with eating, tantrums, hitting, hair pulling, potty training and all the other stuff your kids can pull out if the hat. It deals with sibling rivlary, effects of relationship break-ups, pre-school, common illnesses. Yes, ok he does endorse smacking, but gives alternatives to deal with difficult, normal toddler behaviour. He also gives a real insight into toddlers motivations, and helps you keep your cool when dealing with tough issues. He reminds us what our aims are and not to get caught up in fire fighting as it is so easy to do. I recommend this book to everyone. Whether you agree with smacking or not, its a worthwhile resource. The book is so much more than that one issue. Its the most referred to parenting book on my bookshelf.
Terrible advice.......2002-10-02
After reading the reviews posted by other parents, I bought this book hoping for some sound advice on discipline techniques for my 22 month old. I was astounded by the methods that Dr. Green suggests. His advice for the majority of situations is to "smack" the child. This is exactly what I am trying to avoid in disciplining my child. And his advice for keeping your child in his/her room when put to bed or sent to time-out is to tie one end of a rope around the door handle and tie the other end to something else so the door will only open slightly. Is that supposed to be professional advice?? That sounds almost abusive to me.
In addition to what I consider poor advice, the book was written in the 1980's and seems a little out of date in several instances.
If you are considering this book and are looking for alternatives to smacking your child or tying them in their rooms, I suggest you look for another book.
One pediatrician's opinion.......2002-02-13
As a pediatrician and a parent of three children, I can't say enough good about this book. The advice is simple and practical, the behavioral hints are valuable, and while Dr. Green endorses limited corporal punishment, you don't have to agree with him to benefit from this book. I also appreciated the gentle humor.
This is not a book that worships at the altar of childhood. It is one that depicts childhood as being an interim state on the way to adulthood. The child has to grow and learn, and the parents have to teach. Pretending otherwise, as too many "child development" books do, does everyone a disservice.
Especially for difficult children, I also like the fact that Dr. Green recognizes the different ways that parents may have to cope. Some children are naturally less tractable than others. But even severely developmentally delayed children benefit from simple, humane parenting. This book was a useful guide.

Book Description
The designer of such landmarks as the Washington Square Arch, the New York Herald and Tiffany Buildings, and the homes of captains of American industry, Stanford White is a legendary figure in the history of American architecture. Yet while the exteriors and floor plans of his designs have been extensively studied and written about, no book has fully examined the other aspect of his career, which claimed at least half of his time and creativity. Wayne Craven's work offers the first study of Stanford White as an interior decorator and a dealer in antiques and the fine arts.
Craven also offers a vivid portrait of the sweeping social and cultural changes taking place in the United States in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. He places White's work as an interior decorator within the context of the lives and society of the nouveaux riches who built unprecedented fortunes during the Industrial Revolution. Rejecting the dominant middle-class tastes and values of the United States, the Whitneys, Vanderbilts, Astors, Paynes, Mackays, and other wealthy New York families saw themselves as the new aristocracy and desired the prestige and trappings accorded to Old World nobility. Stanford White fulfilled their hunger for aristocratic recognition by adorning their glamorous Fifth Avenue mansions and Long Island estates with the sculptures, stained-glass windows, coats of arms, and carved fireplaces of the European past. Interior decorators such as White did more than just buy single pieces for these families. They purchased entire rooms from palazzos, chateaux, villas, nunneries, and country houses; had them dismantled; and shipped -- both furnishings and architectural elements -- to their American clients. Through Stanford White's activities, Craven uncovers the mostly, but not always, legal business of dealing in antiquities, as American money entered and changed the European art market.
Based on the archives of the Avery Architectural Library of Columbia University and the New-York Historical Society, this book recovers a neglected yet significant part of White's career, which lasted from the 1870s to his murder in 1906. White not only set the bar for twentieth-century architecture but also defined the newly emerging profession of interior design.

Customer Reviews:
More Buildup Than Payoff.......2000-08-09
The history of women who served in military special forces or intelligence operations is completely virgin territory. However, the promise of She Who Dared by "Jackie George" is ultimately unfulfilled.
The book, in a similar manner to ex-SAS trooper Andy McNab's Immediate Action, details George's upbringing, joining of the British Army, and recruitment into the British Security Forces operating in Northern Ireland. She mentions the difficulties involved in being a woman in a man's world, but readers should not expect sociological discussions of this!
Most of the book is detailed with her training. The publishers try to tie George's account into the mania for British SAS (Special Air Service) accounts. While SAS members trained her unit, she actually belonged to the 14th Intelligence and Security Company, a highly secret British Army unit performing surveillance on Irish Republican groups.
Readers hoping for detailed accounts of her operations "over the water" will be disappointed. The authors state that the book has been submitted to the Ministry of Defence for review, and that probably accounts for the shortness of these accounts.
A reader well versed in British special forces history or that of Northern Ireland may appreciate this book more. I would refer readers to McNab and the SAS writings of Barry Davies.
George has no love lost for the British Army officer corps and details many of their transgressions with the enlisted ranks. However, she does not really explain why her officers would act in such a manner, or how the British Army managed to operate effectively in spite of this. Her rants thus become a shortcoming.
I give the book three stars, mainly because of the dearth of similar accounts. However, in time, with other accounts, I might have to remove a star.

Product Description
Until recently only those Ôin the know' even knew of the existence of 14 Intelligence Co. (14 Int). The membership of this highly trained elite was classified "Top Secret", because the Co., working closely with the SAS, was at the cutting edge of the bitter fight against terrorism in N. Ireland. The public was therefore unaware that women were playing a vital role in the 14 Int's operational mission. ÔJackie George' was one such operator, & here she reveals in gripping detail the ultra-demanding training & nerve-jangling operations that she & her fellow agents undertook. This groundbreaking book lifts the veil on the dark & dangerous war being fought out on the very streets of the U.K. Photos.
