            1 out of 5 stars Rough Draft.......2007-10-11

While the content of this guide is certainly useful, it is far from complete with respect to the material you will need to know to pass the Series 7. In addition, the organization of the material is jumbled. In many areas it looks much like what one expect to see in a first draft, with paragraphs "pasted" out of place, and topic overviews in some instances ending abruptly (and prematurely).

All in all, I suppose the old adage "you get what you pay for" would apply here. For $10 or so, it is a worthwhile investment for the quizzes and practice tests alone. However, I would not advise anyone to depend on this guide as their sole resource in preparing for the Series 7 exam.

1 out of 5 stars Proceed With Caution!.......2005-10-05

I bought several books to make sure my coverage was complete, and to give me a good base of sample questions to draw from. This book provides test questions at the end of each chapter, so I planned to use it for review work. That's about all it's worth.

The chapters themselves leave you woefully unprepared to take even the test questions Barron's includes. Many critical issues are explained in just a few words, with no particular emphasis. For instance, where other books might spell out the order of payment when a corporation is liquidated, this book makes a brief mention that is easy to overlook. This problem is endemic to the entire book.

Note that all of the books I've read have incorrect, imprecise, or conflicting statements. For example, the Boston Institute of Finance Stockbroker Course Series 7/63 Preparation Guide says "A stockholder has the right to examine the list of stockholders. It does not mean the stockholder can examine detailed financial records of the corporation." Barron's book says "A shareholder has the right to examine the books and records of the corporation." The truth is, it depends. Even non-shareholders can view 10K statements and other filings. But examining detailed books would probably require a legal procedure by a shareholder, regardless of whether s/he had the right conferred by owning common shares.

It's certainly cheap, so if you just want a set of additional test questions, go ahead and get it. But, I wouldn't use this for anything other than summary/review work. I definitely wouldn't recommend it as the only guide you buy - the Dearborn Passtrak is much better.

            1 out of 5 stars Pretty Useless.......2004-07-22

Bought it because it was so cheap, but frankly it is very weak.

            Calculation mistakes
            Typos
Old information (i.e. 2000 on IRA)
            Most scaringly wrong answers

I dont know about you, but frankly if you are taking the exam, saving money is not a high priority

1 out of 5 stars Barrons is "barron" of useful information.......2004-06-23

Just took the series 7 today ( 84%) 6/21/04. I read this book first and realized in about a month it was a total waste...many errors, horribly written...don't waste a penny or your time on this one!

4 out of 5 stars Brief, concise, excellent starting point........2004-05-08

I purchased Barron's and ARCO/Thompson's material. I would highly recommend this book as a great starting point for concise answers to specific questions on the Series 7, and a general core review. It does fail in that there are details it leaves out, but after taking the review questions and practice exams, you'll know exactly what those are, and what additional information you need to research. Other more complete books often leave you bumuddled and confused with the massive amounts of information, over what will actually be on the test. This book will help you get the core concepts down quickly, and from there you can move on to more complete material and additional practice exams and computer based testing to feel in the gaps without drowning in an onslaught of information. I would recommend this as the best starting point, well worth its cost and time spent studying, but you will need to purchase more material with additional practice exams, and more detailed information to fill in the gaps.

            Book Description

In 1933 and 1956, the United States sharply limited the kinds of securities activities, commercial activities, and insurance activities banks could engage in. The regulations imposed on banks back then remain in place despite profound changes in the economic environment, in the structure of the national and international financial markets, and in technology. In this span of time many industries, especially those confronting global competition, have transformed themselves dramatically in their efforts to survive and prosper. Not so in the American financial services sector, banks have largely remained stuck in an antiquated regulatory structure which has placed the burden of responding to the needs of market-driven structural change on the shoulders of the regulators and the courts in a constant search for loopholes in the law. The purpose of this book is to evaluate the case for and against eliminating the barriers that have so long existed between banking and other types of financial services in the United States. Universal Banking in the United States studies the consequences of bank regulation in the U.S. as it relates to competition in international financial markets. Anthony Saunders and Ingo Walter examine universal banking systems in other countries, especially Germany, Switzerland, and the U.K., and how they work. They then apply the lessons to U.S. banking, paying particular attention to the benchmarks of stability, equity, efficiency, and competitiveness against which the performance of national financial systems should be measured. In the end, the authors propose the outlines of a level playing field on which any number of forms of organization can grow in the financial services sector, in which universal banking is one of the permitted structures, and where regulation is linked to function.

4 out of 5 stars Great introduction to beading techniques.......2007-08-23

I bought this book as an intermediate beader after hearing many good words about it. And I do find it's a great book for beginners to learn new techniques from stringing to seed beading and wire crochet. Not a book for people looking for different projects, but exactly what it claims to be: an encyclopedia to use as reference for learing. A starting point for new beaders that I would recommend.

I can understand why there are so many used books! The Binding Is Poor and will soon fall apart, Just turning the first few pages showed me that.. Very Nice Color BUT very brief instructions On lots of different Beading techiniques. The first part on Tools and Materials is well done. This book is an introduction ONLY. The wire work part does get you started but leaves you wanting more. It gives a few pages to each techinque leaving you wondering what happened to the rest?

                  Book Description

"I’ve been waiting a long time for someone inside youth marketing to expose the industry for its unethical and manipulative practices. Kidnapped does that and more: The scope of the ground it covers is encyclopedic; it captures the vulnerabilities of each stage of development; and, most important, it empowers parents by offering as many do’s as don’ts. This book is terrific!”

--Barbara F. Meltz, Parenting Columnist, The Boston Globe

Children Are Sitting Ducks in Today’s High-Powered World of Commercialization

According to the American Psychological Association, in 2004 alone young people were targeted with over $12 billion of advertising. Childhood obesity rates are skyrocketing, and children watch close to 1,000 hours of television every year, nearly 70 percent of which has some sort of sexual content. Almost 80 percent of the video games children play promote violence as a form of casual entertainment.

America’s children are under assault, according to Kidnapped: How Irresponsible Marketers Are Stealing the Minds of Your Children, by youth marketing pioneers Daniel S. Acuff, PhD, and Robert H. Reiher, PhD. Readers will learn insights on:

                  · 12 brain-based learning principles that guide child development

                  · 15 developmental “blind spots” that make children sitting ducks for advertisers and marketers

4 out of 5 stars A Tool for Combating the Commercialization of Childhood.......2006-01-13

Virtually from birth, children are bombarded by manipulative advertising messages, in their home, at school, and on the street. Profit driven - direct target marketing to children has allowed ads to infiltrate almost all aspects of their everyday lives and existence. Marketers have invaded the realm of childhood spending enormous amounts of time and money conducting research on how to most effectively reach young audiences, unrelentingly exploiting our youth. In their book Kidnapped, authors Dan Acuff and Robert Reiher take a unique stance from within the industry questioning some of the manipulative practices that exploit the vulnerabilities of our children and hold accountable those irresponsible marketers whose profit-driven tactics harm the well being & future of our youth.
Drs. Acuff & Reiher offer helpful tools for parents, family, & educators, to combat youth-marketing practices along with offering healthy alternatives towards limiting commercial exposure and marketing influences. However, parents alone cannot combat a multi-billion dollar industry vying for the pockets & brand loyalty of their children - but this book is evidence that from within the industry itself, the unethical practices are starting to come into question - which in turn leaves hope for change.

5 out of 5 stars Help for Parents.......2005-09-28

Someone asked the bank robber, Willie Sutton, why he kept robbing banks. His famous reply was "because that's where the money is." In recent decades marketers have discovered that there is a tremendous amount of money in the child and youth market. Consequently the intensity and sophistication of marketing strategies targeting youth are growing all the time. Dan Acuff and Robert Reiher have amazing insights into this because it is the world they have lived in for many years. They combine expertise in developmental psychology with years of experience advising the top companies in the world to pull back the curtain and expose how irresponsible marketers manipulate kids to buy, buy, buy. But they don't just describe the problem. They provide solutions for parents and guidelines for responsible marketers.
The result is a book that is an enjoyable read and loaded with great "insider" information. I would encourage all parents to read the book and would hope that some marketers would take the advice to heart.

4 out of 5 stars Dealing with unethical marketing to your children.......2005-09-17

There is no shortage of marketers using irresponsible and unethical techniques to make a buck off our children. These people and companies take advantage of the child's age and innocence to mold their minds. The problem is not only that this is unethical but that over time it creates permanent changes in the child and alters their personality as well as their health. The bottom line here is that marketers will always target our children as yet another tool to be used to sell product. As such it is the responsibility of the parents to control the factors that influence their children for good and bad. The authors separate the sections of the book to include what is appropriate for birth to age three, three to seven, eight to twelve, thirteen to fifteen, and sixteen to nineteen. For each of these age groups they cover developmental issues, areas to watch and areas where you can expand their exposure to the world and difficult issues. You may disagree, as I did, with some of the detail but overall it is an insightful and interesting read. Even if you don't agree with all of it you are sure to find the greatest part of Kidnapped highly informative and helpful for raising children. As such it is a recommended read.

                  5 out of 5 stars Very Informative.......2005-09-17

Books on the welfare of our children are always of interest to me. Those who do not have a voice need others to care and to speak out for them. This is what our authors do in this outstanding work.
What are they fighting for? The minds, the health, the spirit of our beloved children.
They show numerous areas where our child are under assault by Marketers that single them out by way of TV, advertisements and peer pressure for the profit. They discuss the impact that violence has on our children through television and video games and give statistics that are alarming of suicide among our youth.
In this work we are taught how to recognize these assaults and given guidelines that we can implement to safe-guard our children. I think what I liked about this book was that it was not a total bashing of producers of entertainment for our children, but a work that one: shows there is a problem, two: gives solutions for parents and marketers as well that will benefit all.
A very informative and helpful book that would be a worthwhile read for all parents.

Either you love Robert Hughes or you hate Robert Hughes. I consider him the greatest art critic alive and his insights on XX century art are irreplaceable pieces of wit and culture.

This book is a sum of most of the author's articles published in Time Magazine and other medias and covers old masters as well as modern and contemporary artists. The articles on Warhol and Basquiat, as well as the one on the NY art scene, are brilliant. I bought this book when it came out and rereading it recently I saw how utterly modern it still is, considering today's art world.

5 out of 5 stars An outspoken, but honest critique of art.......2006-03-04

An exceedingly thorough, yet entertaining, historical account of great painters of the past as well as of contemporary artists.
Hughes is candid and not influenced by traditional art critique; thus in many cases he offers a new way of looking at painters and paintings.

4 out of 5 stars A Keen and Discerning Critical Eye.......2006-02-20

This collection of magazine reviews and essays, first published in 1990, serves as a short course in the development of American and European art over the last few centuries. The eye is keen, the mind is thoroughly grounded in art history and tradition, and the writing is lucid and provocative. Hughes wrote the magazine pieces while working as the art critic for Time Magazine. They tend to be triggered by major exhibitions of modern artists or major retrospectives of dead ones. Hughes always starts from the work, and deals with the constricted space of the magazine format by isolating something essential about an artist: DeKooning's draftsmanship; Hopper's despair held in abeyance; Pisarro's decency; Pollock as aesthete instead of wild cowboy; the mismatch between Rothko's intellectual aims and artistic strategies. Sandwiched between whiskey ads and the pimping of NBC's new sitcom, Hughes' magazine reviews demonstrate an admirable ability to dissect major paintings and analyze artists without talking down to Time's mass audience.

The longer essays first appeared in venues such as The New York Review of Books and The New Republic. In these pieces, Hughes lets his critical and rhetorical capabilities off the leash. The opening essay gives us Hughes' take on the 1980s New York art scene, which Hughes saw as a "low, dishonest decade," for several interrelated reasons. First, the art being produced did not serve or surpass the modernist tradition that preceded it; for Hughes, all serious art must grapple with what came before it, and figure out how to move beyond it. ("An artist's every action is judged by an unwearying tribunal of the dead.") Intelligent evaluation of the work produced by emerging artists became supplanted by hype. And it's easier to hype a work - and charge outrageous prices for it - if you unmoor it from any serious critical evaluation of what the work is actually achieving. He's right; it does seem like a very far way from Pollock and deKooning to Basquiat and Koons, and not necessarily progress.

Some of the more memorable longer pieces include his take on Warhol's affectless self-promotion, and his dismantling of Baudrillard's bombastic drivel on the essence of America. There's an informative essay on art and money that shows how escalating art prices remove art from the public because museums can't afford to bid against private collectors for major pieces, and because the insurance costs on major works make comprehensive retrospectives fiendishly difficult to assemble. Denied access to visceral experience of a sculpture or painting, aesthetic consensus is increasingly derived from reproduced rather than actual objects. This makes the art world more vulnerable to brilliant promoters like Warhol or clever packagers like Hirsch. As Hughes puts it, "the art world looks more like the fashion industry than itself. . ."

There's a wonderful essay on Goya that traces the connection between Goya's artistic output and his life experiences. Goya's career was in essence a long grapple with one of our central conundrums: do the failings of humankind derive from bad laws and bad rulers, or is there something fundamentally flawed at the core of human nature? To which Goya, having made his way up through the realms of craft, ambition, political maneuvering, fame, liberal ideals, illness and dashed dreams, would have replied, and did reply, yes. Over two centuries later, we haven't moved past where he was, which is why Goya's work still retains its immediacy and power to move us.

Hughes is an entertaining writer and a discerning critic. Some of his takes on the "contemporary" scene have been dated by events of the past three decades, but his grasp of the past is powerful and sure. His trained eye and sense of history help to ground an art world prone to drift skyward propelled only by its own hot air.

                  4 out of 5 stars Nice reading.......1999-12-10

Short essays, most of them published in Time magazine. Hughes'keen and witty look at several artists - from great masters to contemporary ones. We don't have to agree with everything he says, but he's always objective, concise and inteligent.

5 out of 5 stars THE book of art criticism to buy ..........1999-03-29

I don't know much about art and I'm not even sure I know what I like. But it's obvious that this book is intelligently - and honestly - written, and I'm writing this review mainly to recommend the book to other people who aren't terribly interested in the visual arts. Hughes has made me think more highly of painting in general and made me re-evaluate much of what I thought about the twentieth century. (Don't worry: he also confirmed much of it.) He isn't at all afraid to announce that the emperor has no clothes - so on those occasions when he confirms that the emperor is, in fact, fully dressed, I am much more inclined to believe him.

                  Wittily written, too.

To Amazon Books: Jenny Mitchel, Young Irelander

My book is a biography of a Nineteenth century Irish woman with grace and conviction. By chance I found her in an1857 Knoxville, Tennessee newspaper. "John Mitchel, his wife and children were at home in Tucaleechee Cove, an empty corner of the Great Smoky Mountains." The article said that Mitchel was a graduate of Trinity College, Dublin and she was the niece of Baron Verner of Ireland. Why on Earth? The English Book of Records did not show Jenny although her putative captain father James Verner was brother to the Baron William Verner. So I went on a wonderful decade of research into the 1848 Young Irelander's effort at rebellion. Jenny Verner was born in Newry, Ireland in the early Nineteenth century and died when she was 80 on the night when the Twentieth century was coming in. She was called by her friends "Pretty Jenny". She was married to John Mitchel, also Newry born, who would be known around the world as John Mitchel Irish Patriot. He was an editor of newspapers in Dublin. Who wrote with an inkpot full of fire for freedom from England. A group of other young men naming themselves Young Irelanders joined the cause in 1848, that great year of rebellions in Europe. The English put the Irish rising down before it became really started. The young Irelanders were arrested, tried and sent as State Prisoners to Australia. They were gentlemen and could not be put in the Australian prisons to break rock and build roads. They were each assigned a house and enough land to farm, but from which they were not allowed to leave with out permission. Jenny and their children were allowed to join John Mitchel. They sailed for three months from Liverpool, England with her 5 children, a maid and a manservant. Jenny wrote to friend's back home about her journey and said she was happier than she had ever been. There came a baby girl. In New York City important people like Horace Greeley owner and editor of the New York Tribune, had money given to help the 1848ers and since there was no war, they decided to help John Mitchel escape to New York City. Where they would establish a newspaper for him to keep the education for freedom alive. Jenny, their 5 children and the baby joined the flight. They sailed to San Francisco, where she thought it would be good to stay because everyone was getting rich in the gold rush, but they were committed to New York City. They crossed Nicaragua to the Atlantic Ocean by donkey and Indian war canoes. They arrived at the Empire of the Miskito Indians, a protectorate of the British. They waited in Greytown at the Empire of the Meskito Indians for the Atlantic liner the Prometheus owned by Cornelius Vanderbilt. They lived in Brooklyn where many Irish were settling, including some escapees from the Young Irelander effort. They came to the home of "Pretty Jenny" for tea, scones, wine and dancing. Who ever has lived or visited Ireland is forever homesick. John Mitchel Irish Patriot lost his sponser's when he chose the side of the South in the coming of the Civil War. In the many homes that would follow, Jenny and her piano followed. My research began in Ireland with the Archives of Trinity College Dublin, the National Library of Ireland, the prison records, census records and newspapers. Then extended to the Australian Libraries, New York Public Library, Knoxville Tennessee, Washington D.C., Richmond Virginia and France. The War had begun when John, Jenny and the girls for a brief time were in France. Two of their boys joined the Confederate States Army and John Mitchel thought he should come to Richmond Virginia to support them with his writing. The boys were killed, one Lieutenant CSA John Mitchel in command at Fort Sumpter and Willie the youngest at Gettysberg. Jenny and the two surviving girls joined them by way of a Confederate blockade-runner the Vesta, an English ship. She was on her way to surprise John Mitchel with supplies for Richmond at war. They stopped in Bermuda to re coal for the Carolinas. Yankee war ships beached their boat loaded with paper from England for printing Confederate monies, off the Carolina Coast. From the beach they watched their ships captain set fire to their ship, to leave nothing for the Northerners. Instead of surprising John with supplies in War torn Richmond, they surprised him as bedraggled kittens. In Richmond John Mitchel was indeed supporting his son's and the south with the Citizen Newspaper. Richmond was capital of the Confederate where President Jefferson Davis said the north soldiers should never be allowed in for they would rape their women and starve the old people. When General Robert E Lee sent a message that he was surrendering and the Union Army was closing in on Richmond he commanded a train and all the cars with all the able men in the area to leave. He left Richmond with all the important people for Danville, Virginia, leaving the women to defend themselves. (He had sent his family on a vacation a long way away several weeks before) He commanded that Richmond be set on fire, which it was. John Mitchel and others contributed to the war, but left on foot down the railroad track. The fire was consuming. Jenny and the girls were in their home across the road from a big ammunition dump, which went up one by one. Their home was not harmed. The federal's arrested John Mitchel when he returned to Richmond. He was jailed in Fortress Monroe with Jefferson Davis. Their cells were open to the Atlantic Ocean, which gave John something. Winds from the Atlantic gave him what contributed to his death. The death of John Mitchel Irish Patriot was known around the world and money was sent to Jenny to honor him. It was sufficient to keep her comfortable and pay for a lot in Woodlawn Cemetery. Their grandson John Mitchel was major of New York City. He insisted in World War 1 for the US Army Aircorps and was killed in a training flight. He was carried from the city to Woodlawn Cemetery by a foot parade. In which Former President Theodora Roosevelt marched.
