Pitcher Plants of the Americas
ASIN: 0881927929 |
Book Description
Plants that trap and eat animals: an amazing phenomenon that has inspired awe since before the days of Darwin. The victims may be flies and butterflies, small crustaceans, or even vertebrates the size of rats.
Lured into the danger zone by optical, tactile, and olfactory strategies, the prey succumb to ingenious traps and face their doom. But unlike plants that temporarily catch insects for pollination, the true carnivores go considerably further: they digest them for the nutrients they need to survive in extremely inhospitable sites on land and in water.
Anyone captivated by the unearthly beauty of the "flowers of evil" will treasure this stunning, encyclopedic exploration, which also includes animal-trapping mosses and fungi, as well as advice for growing and buying carnivorous plants and an extensive international bilbliography. It is an essential reference for hobbyist, naturalist, and collector alike.

Pretty good.......2007-09-09
We stayed a long weekend, and this guide was useful. Note, its several years old. They have lists of recommended things to do and where to stay. I didn't really follow all of that, but it was still helpful. We found the Holiday Inn Historic on AAA web site at a great price, and knew more information about it because of this guide.
A Bit Out of Date.......2007-07-07
We used this a lot while planning and touring in Philadelphia. This edition is out of date. Nearly all prices were wrong, sometimes buy more then $15. I also would quibble with some of the restaurant price catagorys. It's a convenient size and weight for carrying.
Great Guide For a 2 Day Trip to Philly.......2006-12-16
My family and I used this guide to plan and have a great trip to Philly. We used restaurant, hotel, and sight portions of the guide, but focused mostly around Liberty Square. I wish it had pointed out a couple tips: go to the visitors center when it first opens in the morning, no matter how hard, and get tickets to liberty hall. Then, walking down to the Bell, you will avoid the 1 hour lines you have most of the day, and get right into the Liberty Hall tour. Then you've got time for a stroll before lunch, and the rest of the day to relax. I can't believe how many people were standing in long lines, or missed out on tickets because they showed up at 10am. Anway, good guide, and I'd buy another again from them.

Disagree with Westborogh review - Good Book.......2001-05-23
A reader from Westborough reviewed the book and did not find it helpful, I disagree. I think the book is intended for the reader like me who has a limited knowledge of their options. In addition, the stories/examples within the books were the best part of the book. If you have an advanced knowledge of options this book might not be right for you, but if you need a simple, easy to read and enjoyable overview of options - I suggest you read this book.
Great Book.......2001-05-23
I was lost with my options until I read this book. I feel that I am able to guide myself through the maze of options with help of this book.
pass this one........2001-03-17
This book can be characterized as a list of attached examples, or a collection of notes. It is difficult to follow and not thorough. Rather than explaining concepts the authors give examples, one per chapter. Furthermore, most of the material is repeated in each chapter since they apply to all the examples. This is a book made in a hurry by compilation of the authors notes. My major interest was in AMT implications which were ignored. After trying to read it for 2 days it went to a corner of my bookcase.
Employee Stock Options - A Strategic Planning Guide.......2000-07-18
This book helped me learn the basic concepts that I have been missing. I would recommend it to anyone who has options and has not already had the time to educated themself. The Q&A section was informative and the stories made the book "fun" to read. A better choice than the typical text book that many might find hard to relate to.

Book Description
Recorded history is a finely-woven magic fabric of intricate lies about events predating the sixteenth century. There is not a single piece of evidence that can be reliably and independently traced back earlier than the eleventh century. This book details events that are substantiated by hard facts and logic, and validated by new astronomical research and statistical analysis of ancient sources.
Customer Reviews:
Calculations are only as good as your numbers.......2007-08-03
Yes, we can all agree that mainstream history is nearly 100% BS due to politics, economics, ego, problems with dating techniques, and various conspiracies. Agreed. But, I've been researching the distinct possibility that human history (in terms of civilizations) are much more ancient than we've been told, so coming across this book was very interesting to me. I wondered how Fomenko could be wrong (if at all) because he is very persuasive in his presentations. Then it dawned on me. If at previous times in prehistory, due to the various catastrophies that are well documented (comets, asteroids, planetary disruptions, plasma discharge, pole reversals, etc) the Earth was in a different position in relation to the sun, different tilt on its axis, different orbit, different rotation (in terms of velocity and DIRECTION), and the continents were in different positions, then would this not cause the ancients to see the sky (constellations) differently? In other words, is Fomenko making erronious assumptions about the physics of the Earth in pre-history, which then corrupt his data with regards to dating the relevant astrology? The last event to seriously disrupt our planet occured roughly 3500 years ago, according to other good researchers, so is it possible Fomenko has been confused by this? The vastly different physics of our planet in the not so distant past may explain this confusion, which is not to say the "mainstream" version of history is correct; on the contrary. I am not an expert in these fields, but wanted to see if this idea could spark discussion.
Pants on fire?.......2007-07-19
Will people ever read before spamming? Yes, Jesuits could not rewrite world history alone, they had help. Anyway, Dr Prof Acad A.Fomenko does not point to jesuits as the driving force of world wide history manipulation in published volumes 1,2,3;, actually he barely mentions the poor devils. Check it with 'Search inside' feature, please. China is rarely mentioned either, in fact, Dr Fomenko is completely eurocentric. Right, his theory contradicts all mainstream schools of history, because in their actual state they are all built on blatantly erroneus chronology. You don't need a mysterious cabal (conspiracy) to falsify history, the falsification is its modus operandi. It is inherent to history(ians) to falsify (distort) events, as it is inherent to humans to boast as it is inherent to power (authority) to legimize itself by referrring to glorious past made to its own order. Dr Prof Fomenko and team have identified scores of instances of such manipulation in Russian, European, etc.. history, and delivered valid statistical proof thereof. His own 'reconstruction' is completely another story. Forget c14 as a valid method of dating. W.Libby has initially discovered a brilliant method of INDEPENDENT dating. Too bad, c14 method has become a joke after a forced marrige with dendrochronology with consensual chronological scale inbuilt. Radiocarbon method can't stand blind tests, but is so very productive as a rubberstamp.
Accepted History & Chronology Must Be Changed. .......2007-04-09
There is no doubt that history as most know it is a sham, & institution's version of History both University & Church is fradulent & inaccurate. Everything was established with an agenda, The real "Dark Ages" are now when we have access to incredible amounts of information past authorities & more important 'common folk' didn't have but our institutions & educators are slow to evolve because of what has ignorantly & arrogantly been taught for too long. This is on many subjects not just Chronology.
For anyone to question "Why would a Mathematician have anything credible to say of History?" The answer is from Dr. Fomenko's preface in the book: "It would be worthwhile to remind the reader that in the XVI-XVII century Chronology was considered to be a subdivision of Mathematics." These volumes could possibly be some of the most important works to date & should be read by everyone with an interest in History, especially professors & educators who have a duty to the public. I have read both books & must say that 'Chronology 1' has some very eye opening & revolutionary information. Even if these volumes are part true the implications are profound & opens the doors to further investigations & questions which must be done. I speak several different lanquages & must say the logic Dr. Fomenko uses with "inflection" of words & words being read from left to right in one region & right to left in another then written backwards, the removal of vowels & get down to basics of words, or different cities & locations having the same name etc. is correct. Vowel usage has always been optional & varied, actually complicating linquistics & study. The first thing one has to understand is that words never had a fixed spelling in history like we do now, the spelling of words was mutable & regional, as well as names & titles of people were vast, varied & changed, NOTHING WAS FIXED or understood linear. Matters of Life & Death as well as financial profiteering yesterday & today were & are made with ignorant, illogical & conspiratorial views of history & reality, it's time people get closer to the Truth & society collectively grow up.
Very Interesting.......2007-03-07
It is a good proposal and I believe it will mature into something even better in the future. I think it deserves to be read.
History as Science Fiction.......2007-01-10
Anatoly Fomenko has written a very intriguing book, full of pictures, charts, and computer 'proof' of his thesis: backwards of AD900 we don't really know what happened or when. Between AD900 and AD1600 there is more certainty, but there is still a lot of fuzzy ground, and things don't get reliable until we get past the 1600's where the printing press made it very difficult for the perpetrators of this timeline manipulation to change anything that had been committed to print. The Dark Ages did not happen. Books were burned for a reason. One organization has doubled the actual length of its existence by expanding the real chronology. Read why.
I had always wondered why Christ died about AD33 and yet men waited until the 11th century to form the Knights Templar, the Cathars, etc and go after the Holy Land by force. Why the 1000 year gap? Turns out there wasn't more than a 10-12 year gap and he proves it using astronomy. This also implies that the planet is not as old as we have been told, and current Christian and other creationist scientists are already championing that idea without being aware of Fomenko's book. The two groups, creationist scientists and the Russian mathematical analysts corroborate each other. Fascinating.
Of course, all this flies in the face of what we have been told traditionally is the 'proper' chronology of western civilization, and most readers will experience 'cognitive dissonance' in reading this book. It means that our history going backwards from AD1600 becomes progressively more incorrect and unreliable until it cannot be trusted at all... in the space of 700-800 years.
Naturally, the curious, open-minded reader will want to know WHO did this, WHY, and did any of the events we think of as really ancient ever happen?
Dr. Fomenko is a respected scientist/mathematician at Moscow State University who has already answered these questions to the satisfaction of his initially skeptical colleagues. Most of them are now believers, a few still refuse to believe (the usual diehards), and of course the western press has ignored Fomenko's work -- for obvious reasons when you read the book. The ones who perpetrated this chronology ruse have a lot to answer for. They are still with us. That's why this book is a well-kept secret.
I gave the book a 4-star rating because I was unable to check out some of his claims; those I checked were as he said. But if even 1/3 of his claims are true, this punches a big hole in what we think is our history, the meaning of western civilization, our educational process (for repeating the ruse as gospel), and the trustworthiness of the organization that perpetrated this ruse, well-intentioned or not.
This book relates to current research into a Young Earth paradigm, to John Keel's discoveries about our planet, and Fr Malachi Martin's insights (in his now out-of-print books). We are indeed sheep who are manipulated and kept ignorant -- for a reason. While knowing what these men have to say may be the "booby prize" (as in: 'what can you do with this knowledge?'), it will provide interesting reading. Didn't someone say: "...and the Truth will set you free."?? For you to judge if this book contains the truth.

A delightful wordless photography book about cats!.......2001-02-19
I loved the book the minute I picked it up!! The book features pictures of cats and kittens napping, playing, hiding in bags and baskets and creeping about. The cats featured have different markings and they are truly beautiful!! I enjoyed the pictures not just because of the uniqueness of the photographs but also because the Japanese settings for the pictures was unique!! I also enjoyed the book because the personalities of the cats and kittens in these pictures was engaging!!
Book Description
Everything from the first steps of design to the final set-up of of solid-body, hollow-body and semi-acoustic electric guitars is covered step by step in this book. It also contains a section about winding your own pickups.
Customer Reviews:
Comprehensive but flawed.......2007-08-16
My copy is dated 2001, 2nd ed. The photos are small and look like what you get when you print on a 300dpi laser printer. Most of the time you can see what you need to see, but in some more detail-oriented photos the definition is totally insufficient.
A bigger problem for me is the poor editing. The book is translated from German to English, and the translation is mostly fine. But there are many mechanical errors in the book's production. For example: paragraphs printed twice, references in the text to photos or figures that don't exist or are misnumbered, text columns that cut off an entire passage so that you don't know how it ends, etc.
The book's strength is that its content is comprehensive. Martin goes into far more detail about guitar electronics than most "build your own guitar" books. He even gives a brief tutorial on winding your own pickups. He also gives a tutorial on building semi-hollows, which is a subject that most authors ignore. However, in general I think that it would have been better to cover fewer subjects in more detail.
For someone intending to build a solid-body electric guitar, I would recommend Melvyn Hiscock's book as your first buy, with this Koch book in second place. If you can afford it, buy both books, and also Dan Erlewine's repair book. If you're serious, you really need all three. I would also note that most of the material in this book is freely available on the net's various luthier's forums, and in more detail. However, it can be hard to track down the piece of info you need on the net, and so books are convenient. Koch might not tell you everything you need to know about winding a pickup or building a semihollow, but he gives you enough information so that you can assess whether it's worth your while to seek out more, or whether you don't really want to tackle that project anyway.
Nearly perfect........2007-05-12
Wow, there is a lot of info packed into this book. I agree with most of the other reviewers in that the appearance could be improved. Photos aren't as good as they need to be, but Mr. Koch does a great job of explaining things and the written content is excellent. The only other weak spot, for me, was not enough wiring info for the semi-acoustic version, which is what I intend to build. However, Mr. Koch is accessible and he graciously answered my questions. I'm well pleased with this book.

Glad I have it.......2006-01-22
I am in the final stages of my first electric guitar. Just about another 10 coats on the neck and a little wiring. Terrible pictures, great info. I find myself refering to Melvyn Hiscock's book (Make Your Own Electric Guitar 2nd edition) for the great (how to) photos and schematics. Both books were a great help. HINT... If this is your first guitar, DON'T use poly-urathane on the neck or body. The book says don't also. So I did. Looks OK now but would have saved me alot of hours if I used lacquer as recomended. I am using autobody (spray can) clear on the neck and it looks great. Have fun
A lot o' good information presented extremely poorly........2006-01-14
Yes, you definetly could build an excelent guitar with this book alone, but I wouldn't want to try. Everything you're gonna want to know is in there, but the subjects are not arranged logically and the author did not group seperate things into seperate paragraphs. You really have to read every sentence carefully because it is easy to miss things. It is not terribly useful as a reference if you are looking for specific information because it is as often as not put in an unrelated chapter.
It was also as many others noted horribly edited.
He does not really go step-by-step through the construction. He also stressed the use of the most expensive power tools on the market. He actually states in one part that you can not hope to make a guitar without a plunge router. (hear that. That's the sound of real woodworkers falling over laughing.)
On the plus side it has the most complete finishing section I've seen in an electric guitar construction book. The pickup section is also good, although most of it is composed of articles borrowed from other authors.
I strongly recomend buying Melvin Hiscock's book and a chisel.
Get this one through inter-library loan.
Whole lotta info..........2005-02-19
Although I haven't really got to build my guitar I feel confident in recomending this book. After been playing for many years and doing things for myself (setup, maintenance and repair) I can assure that this book will provide the beginner with more than enough background information for the lutherie business or hobby. A big plus to this book is the frequent presentation of low-cost solutions to build a number of aparatus that would help in the absence of expensive and/or hard to find tools.
The author is clearly into the pleasure of the craft and concerned with the reader achieving the final goal: build an instrument.
I'd also like to recommend the author's new book on building lap steels. I haven't read it all the way, but it does contain lots of useful information. Pictures in the book can be downloaded bigger, in color and with better resolution from the web, and the shy beginner will found confort in building a very simple lap steel project and progressively go into building more sophisticated instruments.
5 stars surely isn't fair enough to the AUTHOR's commitment to the craft and to teaching it.

BOOHHH!!.......2007-03-09
This is the only bonsai book I have read so far, but it makes me scared to read another if it is like this. This severly disorganized in a manner that makes it seem like a bunch of pieces one cannot inherently put back together. I believe for a more advanced bonsai'er with some previous knowledge and experience, then the book might be "ok." But for us first timers, I need something a little more "reader friendly."
Excelent book for beginner and intermediate.......2000-07-25

OK - Good for encouragement, short on practical advice........2004-12-10
As a single father raising two children, I was looking for and expected a lot more specific and practical helpful advice. Its an easy read, but I estimate this book to be approximately 90% "encouragement".
I think this is a book the author would have liked to have available when in this same circumstance, but it may be better categorized for most people as a 'spiritualistic' guide than a plain survival guide. Author does a good job covering the need to take care of yourself while taking care of a family and to get help when needed.
I do NOT recommend it to men needing specific help with problems.
I DO recommend it to men looking for encouragement and fundamental Christian Bible passages to help you through problems.
Could have used a disclaimer.......2004-05-05
I ordered this book and only upon receiving it did I realize that it was written from a Christian perspective. I think a disclaimer would have been useful: Warning - God-Based, or something like that. This guy, upon discovering his daughter has just had her period, goes out and buys her a rose and a card "containing a statement she could use as a budding woman in service to God."
Is that creepy, or is it just me?
Anyway, I think the book is completely hopeless.
A wealth of wisdom directly applicable to all parents.......2004-03-07

Review of "Dear Friend".......2001-04-27
This well-written and well-researched book is important for anyone interested in painting at the turn of the century, in the position of woman artists at that time, or in Paula Modersohn-Becker herself. It also offers insights into the life and psyche of the famous poet Rainer Maira Rilke. Modersohn-Becker suffers from being known primarily though "Requiem for a Friend," a poem written about her by Rilke, whose view is colored by his own needs and beliefs. Torgersen shows that far from only having made a good beginning, as Rilke claimed, Modersohn-Becker had developed a style of her own and had created a number of arresting and original paintings. Rilke also claimed that in attempting to reconcile marriage and a career in art, Modersohn-Becker had chosen wrongly. Torgersen traces Modersohn-Becker's handling of her husband's attempt to assert authority over her, and shows that she had convinced him to allow space for her art in their marriage. This, too, was a remarkable achievement for her time. Art historians and feminists ought to read this book.
