Dispersal processes have important effects on plant distribution and abundance. Although adaptations to long range dispersal (telechory) are by no means rare in desert plants, many desert plant species do not possess any features to promote dispersal (atelechory), while others have structures that hamper dispersal (antitelechory). The high frequency with which atelechorous and antitelechorous mechanisms are present in plants inhabiting arid areas indicates the importance of these adaptations. Among the benefits derived from these adaptations are the spreading of germination over time, the provision of suitable conditions for germination and subsequent seedling establishment, and the maintenance of a reservoir of available seeds (seed bank). This book describes the ways and means - anatomical, morphological and ecological - by which dispersal in desert plants has evolved to ensure the survival of these species in their harsh and unpredictable environment.

For hard-core botany freaks (like me) and students; Dr. Esau was an Old School (European) no-nonsense professor (I was told by *my* prof, who studied under her), researcher, and genius at the microscope. This is an advanced textbook whose *every sentence* is chock full 'o' important information (I gave up trying to highlight "important bits" after about page 6.) I love this book!

The Price Spiral Method is basically a trading system based on The Elliot Wave System called by another name. A badly written book that attempts to explain the use The Elliot Wave System. Whereas physical capital was of the utmost economic importance in the past, the distinctive feature of the emerging post-industrial economies is an increasing reliance on human and intellectual capital. The growing importance of human capital as a determinant of economic success at both the macroeconomic and microeconomic levels dictates that firms need to adjust to this new economic reality. Specifically, if human capital is a key determinant for organizational success, then investment in the training and development of employees to improve performance is a critical component of this success.
This broad socioeconomic shift underscores a growing need for measuring and analyzing human capital when making managerial and financial decisions. Yet important human resource decisions involving hiring, training, compensation, productivity and other matters are often made in the absence of specific information about the different costs and benefits of these particular choices. Human resource accounting is a managerial tool that can be used to gain this valuable information by measuring the costs of recruiting, hiring, compensating and training employees. It can be used to evaluate employee training programs, increase productivity, and improve managerial decision-making regarding promotions, transfers, layoffs, replacement and turnover. Case studies illustrate, for example:

How an insurance company evaluated a training program for claims adjusters and found that it would return two dollars for every one dollar spent.
How a human resources accounting study revealed that an electronics firm's losses from employee turnover equalled one year's new income, and how the company initiated a program to reduce turnovers.

Fine Machine Sewing turned out to be a lovely book. I expected it to cover a wider range of fabrics and finishings, but it realy only covers linen and cotton. If that is what you are looking for, it is hand's down a great book for finishing lightweight clothing. It revealed the mysteries of twin needle stiching, and points out many ways to put realy nice finishes on delicate items. There are lots of close up photos to guide you along.

I have read a few different books on this subject, and they were all fairly similar, but this one is definitely my favorite. I read it in two days, it is so concise and well written. It is full of how-to's and great suggestions for a wide scope of issuses. It is not a hyped-up bribery system, as one poster stated. Just the opposite. The author shows you how to motivate your children externally, but more importantly, how to get them to want to be good for the sake of being good and feeling good about themselves. It is a very positive approach without being permissive. LOVE IT!!! My almost 4 year old is behaving better already- no joke!

I love this book and have lent it and recommended it to every parent I know. I got it from Half-Priced Books and highlighted my way through it, taking notes as I went along because everything in it makes sense and inspires you to be a better parent. Even though I read it years ago and my dumb dog chewed up my copy (too bad there's no How to Behave So Your Dog Will, Too! version) I still reference it often for some of the hundreds of ideas on how to effectively, positively interact with and support my 4 kids (ages 4,8,9 and 10). This book has been a Godsend! This guy should do nothing but teach classes--if everyone in this generation took care of their responsibilities as parents and raised their children CORRECTLY, the world would be a much different place 15 years from now. If you'd like to establish mutual respect, accountability and self-discipline in your children before they become insane teenagers, Buy this book NOW, and NEVER GIVE AWAY THE ICE CREAM!!!

The title alone suggest the old saying that the worse advise is "Do as I say do, not as I do." He encourages us to be sure we are doing as we want our children to do.

Dr. Severe helps parents learn about things we can do differently to deal more effectively with children. He doesn't offer guilt trips. He does offer sound advice along with warmth, humor, and understanding.

However, I do think he goes overboard in making too many things rewards or punishments. That seems a lot more judgemental than understanding.

He does have suggestions to help children with decision making.

I really enjoyed this book and was able to see changes in the behavior of my 3 year old within days of implementing the information in this book. I feel like I'm much more positive and feel better about my parenting. Also after a month of "positive parenting" I am confident that my son will behave when my hands are full in public :) (at least most of the time). Even my sceptical husband has come around after seeing such quick results. Definately Recommended!!!

Priceless book. A MUST HAVE.......2006-10-24

This book is a god-send. It assured me within the FIRST chapter that my 3 year old is not trying to make my life miserable with the demanding, disobeying, etc. Easy to follow instructions, easy to read... very informative and pertinent. Has absolutely made a difference. THIS is a great book.. I recommend it to EVERYONE!

I *Have* Learned How to Behave!.......2005-07-19

I purchased "How to Behave" when my eldest was 16 months old and have picked it up again now that she (5) and her brother (3) have reached new developmental stages and developed 'new', not so desirable habits'.

I have found, over the years, that the author is correct; that most of my children's 'behaviors' are the result of my behaviors; essentially what I have `taught' them is permissible behavior. Misbehavior is not something innate in children, it is learned. And it is true, when I see them doing something I dislike, I usually find that it is a variation of something that I have allowed or taught them to do. [Take yelling for example. When my eldest started being `loud', I discovered that I had fallen back into my old habit of yelling.]

In this book though, Dr. Severe outlines not just one, but a number of approaches that a parent can use to resolve misbehaviors. Not only by correcting your own -LOL. And unlike other books, he gives role playing examples with sample dialog and actions so that you know exactly what sort of things you ought to say and do. No trying to guess what the author intent is.

Overall, a very useful and insightful book. But it if you are the sort of person who can't imagine that you *personally* are doing something wrong that is aiding and abetting your child's misbehavior, then this book will probably not help your family.

Four stars - A very good and useful book, minus one star for not being the easiest read.
