I first became aware of the story of Vahan Poladian, the inspiration for Mr. Zenobe, through my colleague Agnès Limbos to whom I had sent some rough notes on the new piece I was working on. One day I received a phone call from Agnès, who was on tour in Switzerland. She had just visited the Musée de L'Art Brut (Outsider Art Museum) in Lausanne and seen Vahan Poladian's remarkable collection housed there. Strangely enough, his story dovetailed with many of the ideas that I had sent to Agnès just months earlier.

I travelled to Lausanne myself, and spent an incredible day looking at Poladian's creations and screening the short film Monsieur Poladian á St. Raphael. I was shocked and astonished by his story of exile, crumbled spirit, then spectacular transformation of creative ardour, verve, and passion.

Vahan Poladian was born in Kayseri, Turkey in 1902. The Turks began systematically killing the Armenians in 1915, with a death toll that reached 1.5 million. Poladian's family fled the country. With the assistance of relatives, Poladian attempted to immigrate to the USA, but he was refused entry. He went instead to Cuba, where he worked as a travelling salesman. But this did not last long. Poladian was able to return to Europe when France accepted him as an immigrant.

He settled in Paris, where he made contact with the expatriate Armenian community. Poladian married an Armenian woman who bore him a daughter, Viviane. With the onset of the Second World War, however, Poladian was conscripted by the French Army, and forced to leave his family. His unit was captured by the Germans and Poladian was sent to a POW camp.

Upon his release at the end of the war, Poladian made his way back to Paris, only to discover that his wife and child had disappeared. For several years he searched in vain for them. His mother had also immigrated to France and he was briefly reunited with her after the war. She died soon after, however, and her death and the loss of his wife and child was a devastating shock for Poladian.

Poladian became "socially autistic," closing off the world. In 1966, at the age of 64, he entered the Armenian Home in St. Raphael, France. He would spend his remaining years there. The Home gave Poladian a stipend of one franc a day, which he used to create an amazing phantasmagoria of hats and costumes. Twice daily he paraded through the streets of St. Raphael, showing his collection of "Ancient Terrors and Glories," always with "the hope to change the world with laughter."

A Shabby love in Wartime Paris.......2000-02-02

The superb historical novelist Paul West's greatest accomplishment is this short, unsentimental yet oddly moving love story between a Parisian vagabond and the young woman who (against all bourgeois judgement) cleans him up and falls strangely in love with him in occupied Paris. Loosely inspired by stories of sightings of a real life character who wandered the city of lights with a trained rat during the war, West's gritty, twisted love story is among the best three novels I have read from the 1980s, along with White Hotel and Libra. A strange, rewarding read.

My response to this excellent biography/memoir about New Zealand born poet, polemicist, private printer, pagan and pretender to the Polish throne, Count Geoffrey Potocki de Montalk, by his cousin NZ poet Stephanie de Montalk, is best conveyed by excerpts from the two following reviews. Michael King, writing in The Dominion (NZ) 17 November 2001, said, 'Every once in a rare while, a subject and an author admirably suited to each other connect and the result is a book of outstanding interest and merit. Unqiet World is one such volume ...like many poets, she writes prose very well. This quality is yet another that lifts this book from the domain of biography into that of literature.' And Ruth Brown, writing in the Times Literary Supplement, 27 December 2002, observed: 'Stephanie de Montalk succeeds in bringing her implauible relative to plalusible life. His various exploits on a worldwide stage are set in a meticulously researched analysis of the context of their times, and in openly acknowledging a complex and shifting personal reslationship with her quarry, she charts the subjectivity that must go into the making of any biography.'

brilliance shines throughout the book........2007-10-23

This book is a small volume. And very potent one at that. Along with Tom Demark's Duration Analysis, Blau's Slope Divergence concept is one of the brilliant ways to look at the market. This book should be studied thoroughly by ALL market technicians.

Great Conceptual Book for Double Smoothed Indicators.......2005-08-05

If you're a day trader with moderate success and an ability to tear apart the concepts, and Blau's basic examples, one or two of the indicators discussed could probably help you. If you're just wanting to learn more about momentum and/or double smoothed (practically any oscillating) indicators, or a neophyte, then this book is most likely over your head. The example "systems" that Blau expounds upon are a great basic start to good systems, and he tells you flat out that they're not complete, but just example-type systems. But I'll tell you this: The basic, incomplete systems in this book are a heck of a lot better than a huge majority of those "magic bullet" "get rich overnight" systems that cost three and more times the amount of this book! There is no magic bullet, but this book is a lot closer to making you into the magic bullet than most others.

If you're a beginner and don't have a powerhouse charting platform like e-Signal or TradeStation, I would suggest waiting to get this book (but definitely put it on your Wish List). If you already have the dedication, some experience, and something like e-Signal or TradeStation, then just fork out the money and get it. You should not be disappointed if you can actually read and apply information exactly as given, and are not expecting to receive that which does not exist, the magic bullet. Very strong foundation building book.

One more thing: Please don't expect that you will thoroughly understand the concepts with only one reading. The ideas Blau presents are fairly advanced (high intermediate level) and do take some personal evaluation, which will take time. I believe that this is a book that you will want to read at least once a month for the first six months, then at least once a year thereafter.

A great discussion of momentum.......2004-04-18

This is a book about momentum. It will show you what momentum is and how to interpret it. There are several vey unique indicators developped in a masterful way. You will get many new ideas, and should be able to improve your use of these indicators, and make better interpretation of other mainstream momentum indicators. You will understand smoothing and lag. A must read for any technician.

Not impressed.......2004-02-25

I thought this book was very short to begin with (only 104 pages of actual text, plus some small apendixes)...hardly worth $42 for a small amount of text. It's also very old (written in 1995). The content which is in the book is very difficult to apply because you really need a research tool (like tradestation) to apply these ideas. Numerous ideas in earlier chapters are brought back in later chapters and you have to go back and re-read to see what each indicator meant. I think all in all he just applies his idea of double smoothing to filter out misleading chart data....nothing revolutionary, and hardly worth the price.
Also, as odd as this may seem, with all the math involved, 90% of the charts which he derives from these mathematical formulas look exactly like a line chart of the security!
If you have access to tradestation, this book is worthwhile if you put the time into understanding all the concepts involved.

OK where did my previous review of this book go? I wrote it months ago was it lost?

Can't be bothered writing the whole thing again, so in summary: it is an excellent book, picks a main concept of smoothing and constructs some excellent indicators, and many different ones, has great ideas, inspires great ideas, has code / formulas you name it, extremely worthwhile for anyone who is serious and capable of putting these things into use.

That means constructing them and understanding them.

Some reviewers seem disappointed ... I suspect some people think "momentum" is some magic bullet that will get them into a stock before it moves, other reviewers are arguing definitions, all I can say is that when I first got hold of this book I took a look and did not really like it, but after working my way through it found it to be truly a gem.

Very worthwhile.

This is a fantastic resource for accountants entering into not-for-profit organizations for the first time or to review further for accountants wanting more clarity in their current management positions. This book covers everything and has excellent sections on accounting and reporting guidelines for the many entity types of not-for-profit organizations. Also has a chapter covering entities on public not-for-profit (GASB). This book truly is worth keeping in the office as a valuable resource.

Sometimes you may be serving on the board of a nonprofit group and discover that your funder requires GAAP. Well what is that. This book will help you understand the nonprofit world of accounting. This work has been a resource that I have turned to at midnight myself aand have recommended many times. At times it is a little technical. But it helps to use some "accounting" language in the next board or committee meeting that you will be discussing budgets or finalcial presentatons.

Also, I have used this as a guideline when I consulted a small group that needed help with internal controls.

It was lucky to find this book. I'm a college student. I am preparing to take a AICPA exam. The library of my college doesn't have enough books about Not-for-Profit Organization accounting. This book gives me friendly and detailed explanations. well, a shortness of this book is a tedious text, such as one color text, no graphic figures. I just worried about objective judgements, because I didn't study other Not-fot-Profit books. Anyway, this book makes me come to Not-for-Profit accounting more closely. I'd like to recommend this book.

A great resource.......2006-12-09

I wanted to carve some wood spirits for walking sticks. I had some 1.25 inch dowels to practice with. I checked this book out of the local library, and was able to carve a decent wood spirit on my first try. The "practice" wood spirits ended up looking good enough to finsish and keep for display, even though I had never carved anything before. So if you are a new carver, or even an experienced one, this book will give you plenty of patterns, illustrations, and descriptive text to make wood spirits. I will be buying a copy soon so that I can keep it on hand.

As soon as I learned that the baby I was carrying was a boy, I instinctively knew that I have to foster the "state of emergency" frame of mind to make him into the shining Black Prince that I wanted him to be, and this book will push you on that path from the jump. It encourages, enlightens and spells out the solutions to keep your precious son on the right path. Nearly every possible scenario is touched on here: encouragement to single mothers and fathers and tips on the ex, homosexuality, the doomed "raise the daughters love the sons" mentality, how to teach him to live in a sometimes hostile, racist world while maintaining self-dignity and respect for others, how not to allow himself to get "dumbed down" by peers, avoiding the temptation of drugs and gangs,etc. This book has more info than you would expect one source to have, and it helped me to understand that raising a responsible, loving, respectful young Black man doesn't have to be a pipedream. If you want to help avert crises before they occur, or need help throughout the one you may in the midst of, this book is priceless. Learn from the case scenarios and advice these 2 parents give from their own lives and others and cherish it.

My husband and I are the parents of one 2.5 year old boy and one boy on the way. As an African American parent I am desparate for books discussing the special issues that relate to our sons. I found this book to be a great resource and reference.

With all of the issues facing our sons--drugs, gangs, police overreaction etc. it felt good to know that I am not the only one extremely concerned about how to grow my boy into a man.

This book deals with all of the issues I could think of related to raising a black son.

I think it can be a praticular interest to single moms who I believe have a special need.

This book also provides a listing of several other books that one can reference which I found invaluable.

This is a reprint of an earliar edition with a different painting on the cover. The book info seen on line does not disclose this fact. Therefore if you are an online buyer you may be fooled into buying a book on Monet that you already have.

I just got this book at Chicago's Art Institute at Christmas and I am really enjoying it so far. I am not an art expert by any means, but the author seems very knowledgeable and the text is readable and includes lots of detail and quotes from original sources. There are also period photes of the artist's subject matter to compare with the paintings and to set the scene for his biography.
I was not familiar with this book's physical format. It is not really a cloth-bound book. It seems to be some sort of super-tough paperback. The book seems very sturdy and I suppose that this binding keeps the cost of the book down.
I looked up the publisher in Amazon's book search and there were 1600 listings, so this is probably a hugely famous art publisher I just never heard of.
It's a very attractive coffee-table book that you might actually read!

This is a beautifully illustrated review of Monet's life, by one of the major scholars of Monet. It suffers as a scholarly source, however, because there are no citations of where quotes or information was obtained. And buyers beware: this is a reprint of Vol I of the 4 volume catolog raisonne--so if you have that set, don't buy it!
