Excellent Guide.......2005-12-19
This is an excellent introduction and travel guide to the southern states in and around the Mississippi delta region. It covers Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, and Tennessee along with information on towns and cities such as New Orleans, Baton Rouge, and many more.
I recently had the opportunity to travel through most of the region covered in the travel guide - before the hurricane in 2004. I drove my car (from Toronto) down through Louisville and into Tennessee, then on to Alabama, Mississippi, making a loop through New Orleans, going north through Louisiana to Baton Rouge and departing the delta into Texas at Shreveport, taking the interstate to Dallas. This whole delta region is a very unusual region. I was intrigued by the vast areas of swamps in southern Louisiana and the elevated interstate highways. These are constructed like continuous bridges elevated above the swamps. This region contains many beautiful southern farms and forests. I was a bit disappointed by New Orleans and think it is a bit over hyped as a tourist destination and it has a reputation of being a bit dangerous after dark. Having said that it does have its own charm, cooking, and unique culture, and it is probably the most interesting spot to visit in this area. It is a city that one does not want to skip.
The book is an excellent and a very well balanced guide. I was pleasantly surprised to use this book as a guide and resource. It has lots of photographs, maps, descriptions of things to see, places of interest, local culture including southern cooking, and more. The book has many things that communicate the unique lifestyle, history, and culture of the region and it makes for an excellent travel reference. All you need is this book and a book of state highways or download a Yahoo trip planner that gives driving instructions. I prefer the map book that are typically 8.5" x 11" that have one state map per page plus the overall intersate guide at the front.
The guide has the usual lists of hotels and restaurants, but I booked my rooms by the internet or just stayed a local places as I found them by car. Book your city hotels in advance. New Orleans and Memphis are sometimes very busy. In any case the restaurant guide is good.
Good buy and I highly recommend.

Amazon.com
Covering Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, and Tennessee, Lonely Planet provides 69 detailed maps; accommodation options from forest campsites to antebellum plantation mansions; plus history, museums, personalities of the Civil Rights movement, Mississippi blues profiles, clubs, and festivals. The South is a geographically large portion of the country, with terrain that ranges from sunny Gulf coast beaches to Cajun swamps to sugar-cane fields to Appalachian hardscrabble, and for first-time visitors it may feel like a foreign country. It's a good place to have a reliable travel guide, with all the necessary particulars (lodgings, transportation, tourist offices, and liquor laws), plus where to get your pork tenderloin, fried okra, and pecan pie feasts; your hickory-smoked barbecue, corn pone, or shellfish extravaganzas; and your Creole and Cajun comestibles. This guide covers all the bases. Along with comprehensive listings for sightseeing and nightlife, there are interesting sidebars on floating casinos, the etymology of redneck, and a little baseball background on Birmingham's Rickwood Field, plus an introduction to Louisiana's Daiquiri Drive-Thru, where you needn't leave your car to drink and drive. --Stephanie Gold

Customer Reviews:
Appel is real deal.......2005-08-09
Good book, worth owning and reading. I've seen Gerry speak, and he's a "valid" voice in Technical Analysis and the markets, where there aren't all that many. No holy grail here, but there isn't one anywhere. There is good technical information in the book, despite it's "hokey" looking title. I was skeptical when I bought the book (I've read over 120 on markets so far, have 60 more on the floor, and another 200 on the AMZN wish list), but was PLEASANTLY surprised during the read.
Too old!.......2004-09-23
Appel discusses a number of disjointed trading methods in this book, finally progressing to an exposition of the first version of his Time-Trend (T-T) trading method. This T-T method is momentum-based and has some useful filters incorporated in its methodology. However, it must be emphasized that this is an "expert" system which requires subjective interpretation on the part of its operator. If one is capable of making such trading decisions, then he or she does not need this book.
If you are not a collector of 15 year-old trading books or outdated systems, look elsewhere!
A Must Read.......2004-01-15
This book is as relevant today as it was when published in 1973 and should be in the library of every trader.
Excellent book on systems design.......1999-09-29
Gerald Appel, veteran trader, and the man responsible for making the MACD indicator popular, shares his systems knowledge in this text. It begins with a critique of various moving average systems (good for trending markets) with a constant attention to actual trading results in the real world. He goes on to discuss "swing" based systems that are better suited for a choppy, trading market (non-trending) concentrating on an overbought/oversold oscillator. Some other systems are also examined including channel breakouts. The final chapters deal with Appel's own system which combines rules for using moving averages during trending markets, switching to oscillators for trading markets. The rules are clearly spelled out and can be applied as a purely mechanical system if desired. I haven't backtested the system myself, but Appel provides theoretical results for a time period in the 1970s when the NYSE managed little gain on buy and hold over a multiyear period. The system yielded spectacular results in the same time period excluding dividends (and commission costs, but the # of trades is not excessive and online brokers have lessened this concern). The only downside to the book is that it was written in 1980, and I haven't backtested results for the 1980s and 90s. He does however provide an excellent detailed explanation of the reasoning behind the system. I would recommend this book to both novice and intermediate systems developers. I am interested in trying the system itself, but the book goes along way in providing a background on how to approach systems development and the types of questions to think about. I found it much more practical (although nowhere near as comprehensive) than Kaufman's famous bible on trading systems.
Book Description
Financial market volatility forecasting is one of today's most important areas of expertise for professionals and academics in investment, option pricing, and financial market regulation. While many books address financial market modelling, no single book is devoted primarily to the exploration of volatility forecasting and the practical use of forecasting models. A Practical Guide to Forecasting Financial Market Volatility provides practical guidance on this vital topic through an in-depth examination of a range of popular forecasting models. Details are provided on proven techniques for building volatility models, with guide-lines for actually using them in forecasting applications.
Customer Reviews:
Nice collection of recipes but not for academic interest.......2007-09-24
I read the book in a hurry to return it to a colleague who lent me a copy. Indeed my focused intention was to seek for a few items I would like to see in a book as opposed to a review article. So my comments will be incomplete and potentially prejudicious.
(1) The Preface states that "only volatility models that have been tested for the forecasting performance are selected for further analysis and discussion". I am a bit disappointed to find the multifractal approach entirely absent from the text. The method has been analyzed in details (out-of-sample tests) by Thomas Lux (Univ of Kiel) and thus should be included.
(2) The volatility proxies are mentioned only in passing, for example, Alizadeh, Brandt, and Diebold's range-based proxy (section 1.3.2). These authors clarified the advantages/importance of the range.
(3) The text provides a (practical) recipe but not the philosophy of why volatility forecasting models should work (and thus can be trusted.) To the best of my knowledge, this philosophy is barely addressed in published articles in the field anyway (apart from an empirical or pragmatic attitude). The book makes no further advance in this conceptual direction.
I rate the book at 4 stars for its potential value in practical use.
..............
Note Added:
I spent more time skimming thru the book. "A practical guide", yet the book has no practical instruction whatsoever regarding calibration:
(1) Different techniques, difficulties, trouble-shooting, etc. for this part are entirely missing!
(2) So are consistency criteria and testing!
I hope the author would be more elaborate in the 2nd edition. This current edition lacks the depth of a philosophy book and the breadth of a culinary book.

What a great disappointment¡¡¡ .......2005-06-25
This book really frustrated me. It doesn?t reflects what I truly expected. What am I going to do with this book? Throw it away, burn it or use it as toilet paper. This book is disastrous. Do it again, with exercises, spreadsheets, solved cases, CD, etc. I?m going to rate this book with 1 star. I want my money back.

Great, but.............2001-12-01
This book was great, but some of the things I needed to know about newts weren't in it.
Short concise and informative........1998-11-07
This book was very easy to read and had a ton of helpful and practical tips. It takes you through housing, feeding, breeding and also helps to identify some common newts. For such a short book there is a great deal of usable information. I was especially pleased with all the color photos.
Book Description
Here are directions for many creative, fun-to-do pottery projects potters can follow to produce handsome finished objects without need of a potter's wheel. The author instructs in coil, slab, mold, and pinch techniques to produce pots, bowls, vases, tiles, and other decorative pieces. She also advises on acquiring basic tools, mixing and preparing clay, and using coloring agents. Newcomers to pottery crafting will especially appreciate her tips for making projects easier to accomplish, such as use of a hairdryer at regular intervals for drying out too-wet clay, and easy methods for keeping clay soft and pliable. Step-by-step color photos with detailed captions guide handcrafters through each project from start to finish. Many photos are of the cutaway type to show correct hand positions for controlling the clay, both inside and outside the form. Here's the book that takes the mystery out of handbuilding in clay, demonstrating each step in the pottery-making process. More than 400 color photos.

Love it........2007-04-16
I had to get some books for my ceramic class. then I researched these from the internet and all kinds of bookstores. I ended up finding several books after that. This is one of best books giving us great information for handbuilding techniques. Especially for beginner!!!It also shows you how to make each project step by step. then finished one w/ expraination for glazing and other stuff. You will love it.
Not what I expected... I was looking for 'dinnerware'.......2006-09-20
I purchased this book for 'dinnerware' ideas. But there were few of these items that are featured in this book. There are alot of 'artsy' or sculpture-like ceramics that are featured. If you want to know about handbuilding and working with molds, this is a great book for you.
Overall, I'd have to say that this book has alot of great information, great instructions, and pictures. But the information is not what I was looking for. I will keep it incase my interest changes to work more with the featured type of ceramics.
great ideas!.......2006-08-01
I love this book! A co-worker/co-potter friend had this book and after glancing through it I knew I had to have it. Many ideas for projects, detailed explanations, simple and fun to make projects. Great for teachers or if you just need some inspiration.
Highly Recommend!.......2006-07-19
'Handbuilt pottery techniques revealed...' has already beome an indispensible tool for showing students different ways of working with clay. The step by step instructions and photographs are clear and easy to follow - even for absolute beginners.
Outstanding.......2005-07-30
I bought this while taking a class on hand building. This was an excellent supplement and would recommend it to anyone learning hand building pottery. It has lots of great projects with step by step instructions.

a beautiful forgotten season.......2005-09-13
I had checked out this book several years ago at the library and enjoyed it throughly. When I wanted to review it again it had been discarded!!!!!! I have been looking for it ever since Thanks to Amazon.Com it is mine at last!!!
The book fills a gardener with hope for this forgotten season. You have a glorious spring followed by a power summer and then ...........??????? Lacy shows how many plants can put on a daziling display at this time of year and gives pictures of landscaping ideas using these ground materials. The autumn plantings stay in the background until all others are perishing and fading then presto... your yard is glorious again.
It is hard to plan a garden in the south for three seasons but Lacy inspires one to try.
leave the drama and artsy prose for a novel!.......2000-09-15
I was thrilled to get this book - autumn and winter are my favorite gardening seasons. I was hoping this would be a factual book, pumped with good horticultural information.
What I got was a sappy book full of romanticized gobbledygoock and poetic prose. If I wanted to read a fictional romance novel I would have done so.
If you want a "just the facts" let's get down to gardening type book, this is not for you. If you want a dreamy armchair book to read as you sip chablis in front of a crackling fire, whilst the snowflakes dance upon your frigid windowsill, then this may be for you.
This book expands gardening into the "lost" season........1997-09-07
This is a wonderful book, especially for the gardener who has dreaded the end of the glorious growing season. After years of consoling myself with platitudes (after all, fall is just the harbinger of a new growing season...) Allen Lacy enabled me to see past the arbitrary definition of northern gardening as something confined to spring and summer.
It's safe to say that since I first read The Garden in Autumn in hardcover seven years ago that my garden and gardening have been totally revolutionized. No longer is the first frost (mid-September here in western Maine) a death sentence in my borders...in fact, I have multitudinous plants which now don't even begin to bloom until well after that time; asters, hardy chrysanthemums, hardy cyclamen, fall crocus. Some years I even have the last fall crocus blooming gamely, an iridescent eery blue, through the first snow fall.
Anyone who gardens in the northern tier of the United States and Canada, especially, will do well to allow Lacy to inspire him or her with the great beauty and potential of this "season of flame and fire and incandescence". The specifics are accurate and informed, the photography gorgeous, and Mr. Lacy's prose, as always, is a delight

It's fall on the farm. This delightful picture book takes us through the harvest of colors. It's all here for us to enjoy, from the red apples to the bright orange pumpkins!
If only all farms could look like this one!.......2003-07-19
A wonderful introduction to farm life is this beautifully illustrated children's book. With rhyming prose and full-page illustrations, "Red Are the Apples" is a delight for rural dwellers and city folk alike.
Each page takes the young reader through different crops and other elements of a thriving farm. The fun lies also in finding the hen that appears on almost every page. That becomes a "search" that the child will delight in taking.
This is a five-star book that I had the pleasure of sharing with my four-year-old niece.

Book Description
Once the glories of summer have passed, it is easy for thoughts of chill winds and winter frosts to occupy the gardener's mind. Ethne Clarke's Autumn Gardens is a beautiful reminder that this season can be one of the most fruitful and rewarding of all.
In autumn, although plants have reached maturity, they are far from finished; in this glorious season, leaf color, structural seed heads, tawny fading grasses, and ripened fruit take center stage. The first section of the book demonstrates how to get the best from the season by focusing on harvesting, color, and framework; the second section presents a collection of 100 different plants that excel in autumn, with complete descriptions and advice on care.

Step-by-step guidance helps parents wean children from a potentially damaging habit.
Customer Reviews:
Helpful - Easy Read.......2007-06-12
I got this book at just the right time to help us help our child quit thumbsucking. We are on our way! The book holds some great insights and has really helped me to feel supported in my approach to the whole issue. Also the graphic photos of nasty bite problems caused by thumbsucking really helped to motivate our child! Thumbs up (and. . . out of mouth!)
Better way to stop sucking the thumb.......2006-03-04
My daughter sucked her thumb since she was born until she was 4 1/2. The problem with my daughter was that she would suck her thumb in the night, so she wasn't' even conscious that she was sucking it. She kicked the habit when we bought the thumb guard. It is a device you put in the finger. It was created by a dentist. It is unfortunate amazon doesn't sell it. I am not allowed to write the url in this comment so I'm just going to tell you that if you search in google for thumb guard created by Medetal you are going to find it. Good luck!
Not Much Help.......2005-11-17
The only advice that may work for my child in this book is to seek professional advice. Positive reinforcement is part of the process but not all of it. These kids do this out of habit and there is no help for that in this book. Disappointed.
Best Book on this Subject.......1999-05-16
This is the best book I have ever been able to find on this subject. What makes it unique is that the techniques described are based on MOTIVATION, not external appliances or yucky tasting applicants to the thumb or fingers. The author stresses how the child is made to feel a part of the process, and thereby gets a sense of self-accomplishment when the habit has been eliminated. This raises the child's self-esteem, which spills over into all aspect of the child's experiences.
I recommend this book for parents and professionals who are working with children who are attempting to kick the thumb-sucking habit. It works!
Excellent Self-Help Guide.......1999-05-08
I have been searching for so long for a book on this topic...one that not only outlines the problems of thumb and finger sucking, and the damage it can cause, but also a book that tells you what can be done about it.
This book gives comprehensive information to both parents and professionals alike on the causes, results and prevention of the digit sucking habit. The research done by the author attests to the success of the cited program.
I am convinced that this book will be of great value to parents (grandparents, too) and professionals who are dedicated to eliminating the thumb-sucking habit of children.

Paddy Crosbie's book is an enchanting account of what life was like in the Dublin before Ireland became cosmopolitan. At the time Paddy Crosbie grew up Ireland was still finding it's feet as a free nation, and Dublin was struggling to become a proper European capital. As a Dubliner I can say we take it all for granted now. But this book really makes you realize how much Dublin has changed. It describes events like the War of Independence and the Civil War from the point of view of the children who grew up in their shadow. But best of all, despite all this the book is witty, charming, touching and very well written. A great book about a time and a place that will never come again.
