A Man's Novel Through and Through.......2007-06-15
Doc Ford is up to more adventures and a lifestyle that appeals to men. I mean, he's not married, he lives in the stilt house in Florida, has a lot of friends (some quirky like Tomlinson, a wonderful character), and he has a lot of lady friends. Doc Ford's background is mirky, a lot of it spent on secret missions for a CIA type of organization. The average man will get lost most of White's novels, sailing away with him on some grand adverture.
I've enjoyed all of Randy Wayne White's novels. If you're not in the mood to read, then get them on CD. Ron McLarty does a super job with Tomlinson's voice! He makes him sound like Jack Nicholson--very funny. Tomlinson is a strung-out hippy type, whose ramblings contain surprising bits of wisdom. A very compelling character and friend of Doc Ford.

Doc Ford is Marion Ford, Ph.D., a Harrison Ford type marine biologist who lives alone in a stilt cabin on Sanibel Island. Ford is footloose and fancy free until - in each book - his peace and tranquillity is disturbed by a very attractive damsel in distress.
On and off again Ford has been haunted by the death of spook pal Bobby Richardson, who died in an explosion in Cambodia during the post-Vietnam War days. It was a meaningless tragedy, the result of a land mine that destroyed a good friend and left a beautiful wife and a child to fend for themselves back home.
When the grown-up daughter, twenty-five-year-old Amanda, contacts Ford, quoting a letter from her father in which he said Ford would always be there in an emergency, Ford can hardly turn her away. He couldn't anyway, she's a damsel in distress, after all.
Amada's mother, Gail Richardson Calloway, has been deserted by her second husband and gone off to Colombia, apparently but unbelievably of her own free will, with a very unsavory character, Then second husband, Frank Calloway, is found dead soon after her disappearance and now Gail's bank accounts are being methodically depleted. Amanda wants Ford to help search for her mother and to bring her back home.
Ford flies off to Colombia to find Bobby's widow, then tracks and follows her to Panama. Along the way he manages to get into fights to the death with some pretty tough dudes in this action-packed thriller that I simply couldn't get enough off. At times the story seemed a bit of a clichè, but you what, it's been over a week since I finished the book and I'm still thinking about it. That really says something about a story.
Far from his Best.......2001-07-19
I'm a big fan of Doc Ford, but this installment made me realize that he has his down days (and books). It took White 2/3 of the book to really get cranking and then it seemed like he was making up for lost time. Jackie Merlot was so despicable that it wasn't a question of "Will he die?" but "How?" I forgave the credibility-stretched ending because I was glad to at least resolve some of the loose strings.
Randy Wayne White has been compared favorably to John D. MacDonald (and deserves to be) but the plot for "Mangrove Coast" treads a little TOO close to a former Travis McGee novel, "The Deep Blue Empty." Both novels had a way of meandering along slowly to a final, violent conclusion.
I noticed that one of the reviews for this book's follow-up, "Shark River," accused it of being too action-packed. I would imagine that the readers' reactions to this book are the reason why.
Keep up the GOOD work, Mr. White!

O.K. the stories over. The mystery is solved.The last chapter solves the convoluted plot through the jungles of the Everglades,Columbia and Panama.It all comes together, It's midnight and we can end the suspense and finally go to bed. Why read the epilogue,right? Why read that they all lived happily ever after? Wrong. White leaves the last agonizing twist to the very last paragraph of the last page.

Description:
The island of Abu Minqar is located near the mouth of the Gulf of Suez of the Red Sea and it is the only island in the area with rich stands of Avicennia marina mangrove. The island is highly vulnerable to damage from pollution associated with coastal activities, massive tourism development and hotel constructions along the coast of Al Ghardaqa. High resolution QuikBird satellite images were used for mapping the mangrove vegetation on the island and to establish a baseline database for future monitoring of the changes of the mangrove habitat on the island. The current total area of the mangrove vegetation on the island is 28.54 hectares (21% of the total area of the island) and is made of a single species of mangrove Avicennia marina.

Beautiful pattern, great instructions.......2007-02-21
This variation to the classic log cabin design is beautiful. As always Eleanor's instructions are clear, detailed and percise. She offers yardage and instructions for wallhanging, twin, full, queen/king and this is not always the case with other books. Also included are examples are the many ways to configure the blocks once they are sewn. The instructions are written step by step with diagrams the whole way through, plus tips. The book also includes iron on patterns for making the triangle pieces as well as instructions for penciling your own triangles.
I am a beginner quilter and made the regular log cabin pattern a few years ago. Star log cabin is definitely a step up in difficulty but completely do-able with the instructions in this book. I just completed the wall hanging and couldn't be happier with the outcome!
Loved This Book.......2006-07-17
The log cabin is for beginners, and this a great one. I'm an experienced quilter and, even so, I love Eleanor's clear instructions on what to do next and her ability to walk you through the process. The charts, descriptions, and diagrams are first rate. I loved making this quilt in twin size. One thing: If you're making either Field & Furrows or Mountains layout, don't cut out two strips of the lattice and sew them together. Cut one 3.5" wide for each lattice since you'll be using the same color. (that tip isn't mentioned in the book)
Superb Step by Step Instructions.......2006-07-01
This is an excellent book with clear step-by-step instructions for the novice quilter. THe instructions are very easy to follow and the result is a superb quilt, which is quick and easy to make. A few more colour pictures of the finished pattern would have been useful, as would pictures of the process rather than line diagrams, but overall another winner for the series.

Saddly no illustrations...........2005-05-03
Even though this is the journal of Caroline Mytinger, her travels, and one would expect her illustrations... which played a big part in the journey. Her illustrations were not included. They are now considered a rare antropological study of what was in the South Pacific at that time.... no mention, in any of Amazons reviews that the illustrations were not included in this paper back.... a very bold omission.
The Expotition.......2005-02-03
This book tells the story of two young American women who set off on an independent "Expotition" to the South Seas in the 1930s. They had the lofty goal of painting "the portrait of a race of primitive negroids living in the Southwest Pacific." Of the two young women, Mytinger was the painter, and her friend Margaret was her faithful companion and assistant. They started off from San Francisco with four hundred dollars in their pockets and a cigarette tin containing supplies for doing charcoal drawings. The idea was to supplement their meager cash and support themselves along the journey by drawing portraits of people they met. Despite the odds, which spared them no end of adventures, from capsizing, to fistfights, to malaria, they survived the journey and made it back home with a story to tell.
The book is somewhat of a period piece, in that the author comes across as living her life through whimsy in a feminine sort of way-but at the same time, she is also a feminist, proud of the fact that she is traveling together with her friend in wild places that many men from back home would deem too dangerous to visit. Mytinger writes from a time before the word "politically correct" was invented, and much of the terminology that she uses to describe the local people that she meets would not be considered acceptable today. However, the manner of her descriptions are not at all out of line with the standards of her time. Modern readers interested in living conditions in the South Seas, especially in the Solomon Islands and New Guinea during the time just before the Second World War will find this a treasure trove of information. Mytinger tells us about life on the plantations, and life in native villages. She tells us who was getting along with whom, the Americans, the British, the Germans, Japanese, and of course, members of all the various local tribes.
During the two years of their Expotition, Mytinger did indeed find many heads to paint. But the conditions of the journey were not conducive to assembling a large collection of portraits. All of her painting supplies were destroyed in the first watery landing on the islands. She was eventually able to get enough paints together from various sources to be able to cob a paint kit together and get some heads on canvas. Unfortunately, most of the collection was lost and never made it back home. Nevertheless, apparently, she had copies of a few of the portraits, which appear reproduced in black-and-white in several places throughout the book.
The sun also sets.......2002-03-22
Two women travel about the Coral Sea painting portraits of natives and visiting plantations there in the late '30's. To us, the names of these then and now peaceful tropical places are loaded with horror and regret: Guadalcanar, Rabaul, Bougainville. Prophetically Mytinger details an incident on a British copra plantation in a world vanished away like smoke: the missus kicks a bush boy for using cocoanut husks on the fire, which burn too brightly. "Can every English clergyman's daughter kick like a kangaroo?" asks Caroline. Later the copra shed burns down mysteriously, ruining the missus. Her husband had died some time before and her thumb was infected. "It was the fact that she did not throw her head on the table and sob like any woman that undid me. I went for a walk down on the beach and did it for her."
