Customer Reviews:
Informative and Fun.......2006-11-12
Great info on different personality types and how best to get along while
on vacation with one person or several people traveling together. I really enjoyed reading this book.
Perfect for anyone who travles.......2006-03-16
This book entertains and educates its readers with super tips to help avoid potentially messy situations. You can read it from cover to cover or cherry pick relevant chapters.
Entertaining but a bit "cheezy" and basic.......2005-02-16
Though the book has some chuckle-worthy chapters that cover topics such as traveling with a spouse, a lover, children, pets, co-workers, friends and in-laws, as well as some insightful texts on traveling alone or going on a honeymoon, overall the text was a bit sophomoric and didn't offer much information beyond the realm of common sense. I might recommend this book to someone who hasn't traveled too often, but for the seasoned traveler or backpacker, this book probably covers situations that you long ago learned to deal with on your own.
I picked up the book as I was preparing for two-couple trip to Eastern Europe, and I thought that there might be some conflicts of interest along the path (it turned out there were!). I thought this book might give me some creative ideas on how to deal with this conflict, but it really did not. If you are under 30, i can guarantee you will find the humor to be of the type reserved for the 50-and-over crowd. Like me, you will probably miss finding a more daring text that deals with more outrageous and modern situations. (So much of the advice is outdated in the book, as it refers to things that simply don't happen in the Internet era, like visiting your travel agent all the time).
I would love to see a similar book by someone with a much sharper tongue, some hard-core worldliness, less social nicety and much more extreme situations. With all the much less innocent 20-something travelers out there, someone should re-write this book but with chapters on "What to do if your travel mate is a lazy bum who doesn't do squat to help cook, clean, make purchases or ask for information", "What to do if your travel partner smells and has really nasty hygiene habits", "What to do if your travel buddy is a sponge", "What to do when you find out your fellow traveler's only interest is in drinking beer and going to clubs", "When your friend will only eat at McDonald's", "To buy a local cellphone or not to buy", "Networking with locals on the Internet before you go" or "What to do if your travel mate constantly abandons you to have flings and sex with people on the travel trail"... These are probably funnier and more up-to-date topics for the twenty-first century.
A Book for Travelers and Their Companions.......2004-04-15
Can traveling really be hazardous to relationships? Are there people you would never travel with or dread traveling with on vacations? Then this book might present a few creative solutions.
Nadine Nardi Davidson has spent 27 years as a travel consultant and in this time she has assisted many travelers from age 9 to 90. In this book she finally shares all her travel insights and secret tips for staying sane while traveling.
In this entertaining book you will discover:
The Nine Travel Types (You might find you are a little of each, but one will be dominant and it does seem that "shopper" and "culturist" seemed familiar.) Nadine mentions that you might be a combination of travel types.
Travel Etiquette when Traveling with your Employer or Business Colleagues
How to Survive Traveling with Your Friends, Spouse, Pet, Relatives, In-Laws and Kids
The Honeymoon (If there is a hurricane on the way in, leave no matter what your husband says. Ha, ha. )
What to do when your teenager falls in love while you are on vacation
What to do when you take your child's friend along on your vacation
Nadine's writing style is comforting, often humorous and always a pleasure to read. This is one of the most interesting books on travel I've read to date. There are concepts in this book I would never have even considered. On my last trip I used her idea about limiting my wardrobe to one or two basic colors. That would be black clothes as a basic and therefore all shoes could be black too, etc. Nadine is right about packing toiletries. They can truly take longer to pack than your clothes.
Throughout the book you will find real-life stories that are often humorous and always entertaining. This is an insiders view of travel and this book is filled with practical advice.
You will also find travel checklists, information on special airline meals, making a traveler's medical kit and packing tips for trips of 7-21 days. May I also suggest: Smart Packing by Susan Foster.
Whether you are traveling to visit family for the holidays or traveling overseas, this book is an essential guide to enjoying your next vacation or business trip.

Our best trip yet!.......2001-03-01
I'm glad both my husband and I read this book BEFORE our trip. He finally agreed to do some of the things I like to do on our trip--like going to museums without complaining. This book helped him see the light--that the trip will go a lot smoother and it really isn's so hard to allow time for each other's favorite activities when we are on vacation.
Book Description
Written by a former Managing Director at Merrill Lynch, Working the Street is the resource for readers hoping to build a successful career on Wall Street. It is not a "how-to" career book or a job guide. It doesn't tell the reader who to contact for a job or what classes to take to prepare for a career in banking, and it is not a book about the technical "nuts and bolts" of Wall Street. What this book does tell the reader is about some of the "ins and outs" of Wall Street; about how things really work in the banking world; about some of the speed bumps to watch out for and some of the "low hanging fruit" that is ripe for the picking, from getting in the door and developing positive habits, to getting a bonus and handling retirement. In order to really succeed, it is necessary to know as much as possible about how Wall Street really works. Working the Street goes a long way in providing exactly that.

Pithy, Career Advice about Investmen Bank Corporate Politics.......2005-05-02
One of the great strengths of this book is that it gives straight, pithy, unvarnished advice about how to succeed at an Investment Bank. The author, a retired a Managing director at Merrill Lynch, focuses mainly on the corporate politics rather than the detailed content of the jobs themselves.
The author touches on many areas, from how to get a job, how to navigate the corporate politics, and knowing when to leave. To begin, he reviews the process of picking a job that fits your personality in sales, trading, research, or control/staff jobs. He discusses how to survive the 3-5 years a new analyst/associate while doing the "grunt" work of preparing presentations, prospectuses, or trade tickets. He discusses the demands (12 hr+ days), the toll on your personal life, and the high pay that compensates you for the risk of layoffs. He also reviews the politics within the firm, and the natural tensions between producers & corporate staffers, investment bankers & research analysts, flow traders and "intellectual" traders, and between all departments at bonus time. Helpful work tips are also emphasized, such as multitasking, punctuality, working foreign assignments, and how to build support within the firm to maximize your compensation at bonus time. Through it all, despite the downsides that the author freely acknowledges, he believes that on balance jobs on Wall Street are worth it, because they have it all - intellectual stimulation, excitement, and great compensation.
On the downside, I found the book's title a bit misleading - the focus of the book is on Investment banks, not on Wall Street as a whole. Granted, that covers a lot of `The Street,' but not all ( what about investment management? Credit rating agencies? Commercial banks? Hedge funds? Venture capital? These aren't covered.) I think that if you want a broader view of the financial services industry, or details about specific firms, then there are other guides out there are better for that - such as the "WetFeet Insider Guides," "The Vault" Guides, as well as "The Fast Track" by Naficy. But this book covers the corporate politics better than any of the guides I just mentioned. So if you're buying a few books to read up on how to succeed at Wall Street jobs, put this one on your list.
Great Insight and Advice.......2004-02-15
The author does a great job of giving you the lay of the land of the heart of the financial world. It is easy to read and understand and presents a very practical and useful picture of a Wall Street career.

Riddled with Errors and Typos.......2005-03-24
As an accounting intructor at a technical college, I adopted this text after successful use of a previous edition. However,in my opinion, this textbook is horrible! Riddled w/ errors, typos, and omissions, SW/Thomson Learning should be embarrassed to claim it as its own. What happened to their editors? Use something else when possible!

a hand tool enthusiast.......2006-08-21
I just received this book. Wow! Because of all the good reviews, I expected a good book. This is one beautiful book and is way above my expectations. I would have been satisfied if it only contained photographs and illustrations without the text, they are very clear. I have not purchased a book that has impressed me as much as this one, ever. I can only add my positive comments to the many reviewers before me. It is well worth your investment whether you just want to scan through a beautiful book or are a serious craftsman wanting to build fine furniture for your tools.
One of My favorite books!!!.......2005-02-23
Tolpin is a refreshing change from the old bland how-to's that have been republished with outdated material year after year. This book is no exception. I love how the author takes you through the history and evolution of the toolbox. The color pictures are gorgeous.(Or maybe it's the toolboxes?) This is a must own for any tool lover. A great gift idea for that person you know with the messy shop!
Fine Bookmaking about Fine Woodworking.......2005-02-11
I turn into a box-making junkie during the winter. Every time I see a chunk of wood I start resawing it in my mind thinking of neat things I could do with it. One of the side effects of this compulsion is that you accumulate a lot of odd tools that seem to meander all over the shop. Guaranteed not to be in the place they should be when you reach for them. After looking at the prices for good commercial tool chests it occurred to me that building one wouldn't be all that more expensive. Even if it took 400 hours of work rather than a quit drive to the nearest discount store.
A quick trip to the local woodworking store turned up several books on the subject, but one, Taunton's Toolbox Book, stood way out from the rest. Even though this is the one book that has not one detailed plan in it. It is, however, the most exhaustive study of toolbox making I've seen so far. Author Jim Toplin blends history and technique together to give you a real understanding of how the toolbox has developed and changed as woodworkers first came to the colonies, then adapted to the rising use of machinery, and finally then met the space age head on. It is carefully and clearly written, and a host of sketches makes up for the loss of detailed, paint-by-the-numbers plans.
In fact one of the things that Toplin makes abundantly clear is that you make a toolbox to hold YOUR tools. Too many of us buy a toolbox and then set about filling it with new widgets that we aren't even sure we will need. And this book is about assessing your needs, laying out the best way to meet those needs, and then building something that is often the showpiece of a woodworker's skills. One glance through the book and you will see many fine photographs of work that is both functional and beautiful. I wasn't kidding when I said a toobox can take 400 hours to make.
As usual, Taunton has made every effort to turn a how to book into something you would be proud to have on your coffee table. This is a very well made paperback with heavy, glossy paper, fine design and layout work, and well-written text. And a very accessible price for a massive amount of information.
Prepare to be inspired........2004-11-19
I think this, along with "The Workbench Book" and Roy Underhill's fine offerings, ranks at the top tier of woodworking books to come out in our generation. The lowly toolbox often gets short shrift in our thinking, and frankly most modern woodworkers don't need the sort of boxes our grandfathers had, but nothing displays pride in your trade quite as quickly as a beautiful tool box. And that's what we get here - loads of gorgeous tool box ideas. Starting with the (probable) first American toolbox, a sea chest brought over with the first settlers, we ascend to the glories of the 18th century cabinet makers like Chippendale, and then on into the modern era where all bets are off. Some are rough and cabaple for taking on real job sites, others are fine furniture and too nice to really use. But any woodworker worth his salt will find inspiration in this enough to build a proper house for his tools to live in.
Awesome.......2004-05-25
This book is fantastic. I've owned a couple months and I refer to it all the time.
This book does a good job of surveying different ways people store tools. It provides excellent examples, pictures and sample projects in just about every classification. Some of the chests at the beginning of the book are amazing.
As I'm building up my shop I constantly look through this book and the other Taunton books (such as The Workshop Book) to get ideas about how other people store these things.
Book Description
Parenting with Humility...We often realize that we learn as much from our children as they learn from us. So why don’t parents approach the task of child-rearing as a learning experience, rather than a mandate to make sure their kids succeed in life?
To reduce the pressure and enjoy greater closeness in your family, turn your parenting upside-down by allowing God to use your children to help you grow up. Imagine what would happen if you began to prize what you’re being taught by your children’s quirks, failures, and normal childhood dilemmas, rather than worrying about whether you’re doing everything right as a parent. Now you can let go of the pressure to make sure your children succeed, and instead learn to grow into spiritual maturity by listening to your children.
From the Hardcover edition.

Become a Great Parent God's Way.......2003-09-17
I have enjoyed Allender's books for years. He has the uncanny ability to take a difficult issue and make it understandable through clear writing, personal stories and scriptural references. This book shows how we can reflect the character of God into the lives of our children. Allender explains that our success as parents relate primarily to how we answer a child's two core questions: (1) Am I loved? and (2) Can I get my own way? As parents, we are to imitate God, the perfect parent, by providing both mercy and unconditional love on the one hand, and strength and discipline on the other. Read this book. It will help you lead a life with your kids that is in the middle of God's strength and mercy. Along the way, your kids may teach you a few things about yourself, as well as God!
This Is a Parenting Book Unlike Any Other.......2003-08-20
Dr. Dan Allender's book on parenting is truly revolutionary and will change each readers perspective on who teaches the most: the parents or the children. His humorous personal stories weave into his lessons to make this one of the few parenting or "self-help" books that is harder to put down than the most griping novels. The brilliance of this book is that it redefines the parent-child relationship and shows you how to effectively handle the ups and downs of parenting. Dr. Allender's message has helped me be a better parent, and I have no doubt that I will always keep it close at hand to reread in any time of need or joy.
