Before you spend a lot of time on Tobin's snake oil I would check his actual record with this method (if you can). As mentioned above his first changewave book, published at the top of the tech bubble seems to have disappeared from the shelves and replaced by the new updated snake oil. Tobin is all about promoting Tobin, not helping you.

The original Changewave Investing came out in 2000, at the height of the dot com boom. The book touted the "New Economy" or "Techonomy", and how the future for investors in this area has never been better. Talk about bad timing and terrible advice.

In the late 90's almost anybody could make money in the market especially if one was invested in technology. And everyone thought they were geniuses. This euphoria seems to have afflicted Mr. Smith. Taking his advice when the book came out would have resuted in significant losses, since 2000 was the peak of that market and 6 years later it still hasn't recovered.

Along comes CW2.0 in 2001 with the added "protecting your gains in a volatile market" as he still raves about the "Techonomy". Hmmm....

When I make investment or trading decisions I listen to those who actually know what they're talking about with a proven and consistent track record. Tobin Smith's record is dubious at best.

So if you really want to get a hold of your finances and become an excellent and astute investor, start with the greatest investors of our time: Warren Buffett, George Soros, Jim Rogers and Peter Lynch. Look at their histories, methods and commentaries. It will be far more insightful than a misguided book full of made-up words, ridiculous projections and bad ideas.

To qualify for a changewave company, the company must be $1 billion in size.

Changewave 1st Screen : They must have a growth rate in the top 10 percent companies in the new economy.

Changewave 2nd Screen (Top 10 sectors) : five times S & P 500 growth

Changewave 3rd Screen (Supersectors): Top 10% growth rate in each new economy industrial category.

Changewave 4th Screen (Market): Top 1%

Predicability is essential in changewave. The most predictable winner in a top secular growth space goes to the highest valuation - everytime.

All things being equal, the simplest to understand secular growth and competitive advantage logics wins the growth stock debate.

People buy stocks the same way they buy other products. People buy products they are comfortable with; the product is simple too understand and its indispesible to the consume.

Fundamentalist figure out stock value based on fundamental research and analysis. They predict the stock price will go up. P/E = Price of Share/Retain Earnings. This tells you if the investors are being unrealistic about the price in relationship to earnings growth. However, price is a function of present value and future earnings, It does not consider capital generators, such as, copy rights, intellectual property, and patents. Capital growth companies accounted for 50 percent of all the corporate profits.

When the dust settles in any information technology-based industry, there will be one company with 60 to 70 percent of the market share and the bulk of profits and valuation in the segment. The number two guy will have a 20 percent share.
Technical analysis is employed to decide buy and sell patterns. Technical analysis uses bar charts and indicators to buy and sell.

The momentum investor waits to see what everyone else is doing. If there's momentum behind a stock, he assumes that the momentum will continue and bets on that fact.

The innovators: Because only 3 to 5 percent of the world are innovators. The early adopters: 10 to 15 percent are early adopters. The early majority: "I need more evidence"

Change wave looks at marketing, first, and considers how marketing will use product superiority as a compeling motivator to buy. Product superiority does not guarantee a consumer buy trend. (Beta verse VHS, DVD verse CD,CD verse memory stick). Customer acceptance is more important than product superiority. The winning product will have the best marketing.

Suppose a company builds a car that rides on air and suppose it comes with special safety features than are 80 percent more effective at saving lives. Does everyone go out and buy the new car? Probably not because safety does sell just increases cost. Now suppose other companies are starting to build a similar vehicle. Its radical departure from terrestial ground transportation creates a changequake. It looks like the old transportation technology is being abandoned. Suppose, the technology is the hydrogen cell transportation; the changequake may not be felt, if it is felt than it qualifies; we are not looking for an incremental change; we are looking for radical change. Wealth opportunities are found from rapid and significant changes.

Entrepreneutrial companies harness their innovations and create new, order of magnitude improved ways of doing things. The law of distribution is controlled by product creation and consumer demand. Consumer demands does change suddenly, it changes when their is a disruption.

"Investing in the right stock in the best space gets all the money." This is the law of the free market. This is the law of distribution, its beautiful.

I like Tobin Smith on Bulls and Bears, and since I enjoy business books bought a copy of Changewave 2.0. The first 100 pages talk about "Changewave" ideas: cotton gin, auto, radio, tv, computer,web, etc. The idea is to buy the leaders as these trends emerge. Why that took a 100 pages is beyond me. Tobin fills the pages with words like ChangeQuake, FadQuake, Marketquake. (Even a glossary in the back for made up words)
I thought for a minute Miss Marsha had written an investment book. The second half of the book was ok, the most cogent point was that the only way you make money in stocks is when you sell.

My suggestion, is to pick up a copy of the Gorilla Game which I read a few years ago. It is the same concept, but is much more detailed and useful to individual investors. For the technical analysis/ growth investing segment of the book, How to Make Money in Stocks by William Oneil gives a reader far more insight on how to select stocks and protect profits.

We've been reading this book to prepare ourselves for our new addition of a purebred Chowlet. The breeder recommended this book and it is full of all the typical things, but also contains LOTS of excellent information for the first-time dog owner such as Basic Training. Mr. Beauchamp helps you to get inside the head of a Chow Chow more than any book I've run across. I love his personal insights, such as when his US Army experience is drawn upon to explain the training style of a Chowlet. Expert information given with memorable explanations make this book a real winner.

This is a great reference for a Chow owner, but even more useful for deciding whether a cute and cuddly, but stubborn Chow is the right breed for you. Chows are what their owners make them, and this book gives readers the tools and techniques to make them great companions.

What a wonderful little book! We had a Chow many years ago and were considering replacing our previous mixed breed dog (who died of old age) with a Chow puppy. After we read this book, and carefully considering the pros and cons, we couldn't wait to find the right breeder. Chows aren't for everyone but this book convinced us it was still the right breed for us. The book is a buy at 3 times the price.

WASTE OF MONEY.......2006-12-31

After reading other reviews I couldn't wait to receive this book and try some new techniques. I was VERY disappointed with the instructions -- there is no way I could complete even an "easy" sample project. The instructions were sooooo basic that they were incomplete. This is definitely NOT a book for beginners.

Personally I found this book rather dissapointing. The instructions are very perfunctory and often incomplete. Better instructions on most of the included tecjniques are available free on the web with a bit of searching. It is an interesting book to read but don't expect too much practical help.

Best beading guide ever.......2006-05-02

This is the most complete guide to beading techniques I've ever seen. It covers everything you could possibly want to do with beads, especially seed beads. It covers everything from beadweaving (peyote, brick, herringbone, netting, etc. stitches) to knitting, crocheting, and tatting with beads, to wire work, to bead embroidery. The instructions are wonderfully clear and well-illustrated. There are 2-3 projects to make with each technique, including a small sampler project to get your feet wet. The book is also an invaluable resource for tips and tricks and information on beads and beading.

This is not a very good book for the rawest beginner, nor does it cover the basics of actual knitting or crocheting (but you can easily find basic knitting and crochet stitch directions online or in other books). But if you've had some experience with beading, this book is great, and it will take you to the most advanced beading stages. I'm an intermediate/advanced beader, and am constantly finding new information in this book.

The book is wonderful. The illustrations on how to do the various stitches are enlarged enough to easily see what's going on. You don't need to puzzle out stuff. Besides the size of the illustrations, they are clear cut with each step having its own picture along with clear written out instructions.

As the title said, its complete. All of the techniques I could think of are in there, plus some I never heard about.

With all of the techniques shown, there are very well written and diagramed instructions, a sample to do to try the technique, and a project that uses that techniqe. There is even a sampler project using all of the samples of each technique at the end.

The photographs are beautiful. The projects they depict are bold, vibrant, and useful at the same time. The pictures of bead crafts that are show as examples of what can be done with beads are stunning.

Besides all this, the section where the tools and wares of beading are mentioned is good. This section also has a how to do basic beading stitches section as well - including the looom.

I found this book very informative and as I also have Luke Jackson's other book freaks geeks and aspergers which I also found great. Both books have given me a much better understanding of my son's High Functioning Autism and how he feels and how I may be able to help him.... I recommend it thoroughly.

Thorough but overenthusiastic.......2004-03-14

In this book, Luke Jackson explores the effect of the gluten free/casein free (GF/CF) diet on himself and his family and gives practical advice for how to apply it in everyday life. The long appendices (they take up half the book) by his mother, Jacqui Jackson, describe GF/CF recipes, parental notes on implementing the diet, and other resources related to the diet.

The only problem with the book is the enthusiasm with which the diet is presented for all autistic people, and the assumption that it will not harm people to try it so therefore everyone should. This is a diet that only works for people, whether autistic or not, who have specific digestive problems or allergies. If they don't have these problems, they won't need the diet, and the diet can be harmful (physically or financially) to people on it. The author's enthusiasm, given the diet's success for him and his family, is understandable, but it extends slightly too far.

For people who need the diet, though, this is a good book to read for a thorough introduction to how it works and how it can better the lives of people with those specific digestive problems, whether they are autistic or not.

A brilliant, informative book.......2003-02-15

I am the grandmother of a wonderful 6-year-old boy who has been diagnosed autistic, and I've read both Luke Jackson's books (written at ages 12 and 13) in order to get a more complete understanding of the condition from a "kids eye view". I can only hope that Luke keeps writing for the masses.

This particular book is a treasure. The reader is treated to Luke's keen powers of observation and unflagging sense of humor, as always. We also get a couple of chapters written by his exceptional mother, Jacqui, who modestly denies being a "superwoman." (I beg to differ.) It's Jacqui who convinced me that if a woman in charge of a household of eight persons can master the art of gluten-free cooking, then the rest of us just might be equal to the task, as well. Last but not least, recipes, menus, and tips on acquiring and organizing necessary equipment are provided in thorough, easy-to-understand detail.

Perhaps all that might not sound exciting to the average person, but I can assure you that this is one of the most interesting and absorbing books ever to address the titled topics. Witness: in the middle of a work week, I began reading the book at about 11:30 p.m. and read it straight through. I couldn't put it down until I finished at nearly 3:00 a.m.

Inspired by Luke's work, I have gone on line to look up more information about gluten-free diets and related topics and have found a wealth of valuable information. However, the language I used to talk my grandson's family into attempting this new lifestyle came straight from the book reviewed here.

An invaluable resource. A "must" read for anyone dealing with a person who on "the autism scale." Thank you and bravo, Luke, Jacqui and Marilyn Le Breton. You have made a very necessary contribution with this publication.

Hearing child's perspective was a great help.......2002-08-29

My son, 6-yr-old with autism, has been on this diet for over 2 years, and I just read this book. It was very interesting reading the perspective of a child on the diet. I am now even more motivated to keep my son on the GF/CF diet. If you're thinking of starting it, this book will settle some of your concerns about implementing it, such as how your child will adjust, whether they really will start eating what you cook, what to do when other family members are not on the diet, etc. The author is also not the only child in his family who is GF/CF; he has two brothers on the diet as well and describes their experiences with it.
Luke and family are in the UK, so the appendices written by his mother will be more helpful for UK than US readers, but there is also lots of information that applies in the US. She provides some sample menus and recipes - there really are plenty of things to eat after eliminating gluten and casein. They have also included a list of sources for products, both for the UK and US.

The photographs are wonderful. Unfortunately, Mr. Rand has not done his research. He misidentified houses, their dates of construction and owners. His book is filled with works by authors already published some years ago. It is a cobbling of misinformation and script available elsewhere. It looks thrown together. There is no index. I cannot recommend this book.

CALIFORNIA DREAMIN.......2007-01-18

When you look at Irving Gill's work, you can almost feel the southern california sunshine and the ocean breezes caressing your skin. I for one love his work, expecially his Art Deco white houses, they just exude cool. This book is a wonderful tribute to the man and his work. The text is highly informative and the images are crisp and vivid. If you have any interest in southern california shiek or just talented people and their art, then I believe you will not be disappointed in this work.

I just received this book in the mail. It is a great accompaniment to the "Architecture of Reform" book especially because this book has beautiful large color photographs! Great book!

Never enough Gill.......2007-01-03

This is a beautiful book of Marvin Rand's particular photo-stylistic vision of Gill's work, although it is very limited on written information. I would also recommend the fantastic Thomas Hines "Irving Gill and the Architecture of Reform," as well as the absolutely-required Esther McCoy "Five California Architects" as compliments to Rand's photos. In the end, it's about Gill's stunningly simple and beautiful work. The images, the details, the lost masterpieces (Dodge House), etc. are all wonderfully captured here. I waited nearly a year to get this book, and I was not disappointed. That said, anything on the California modernist pioneers is generally an interesting book purchase. Recommended for fans of Richard Neutra, Gregory Ain as well as the pipe-smoking American Bungalow set.
