Reference for the resident and visitor alike.......2006-05-08

This guidebook is divided into eight sections by geographic region, with a top-level map up front and detailed maps of each location by section. The entire book is black and white, but the maps and pictures are still crystal clear. The opening chapter is an index referencing any subject one could want to find in Rhode Island, from ballooning to antiques to quahogs to yachting. I was most impressed with the "Green Spaces" section for each region, listing dozens of outdoor parks and activities available in the Ocean State. While there are certainly other more detailed outdoor guidebooks to Rhode Island, they haven't been updated recently, and this is a great overview guide to the riches of "green space" available in Little Rhody. Also included are beaches with recommendations about what outdoor activities are appropriate at each. Plus, if you want to visit historic houses, historic churches, historic mansions, or general historic sites, this is the state and the guidebook for you.

For Activities, price information is noticeably missing. Perhaps detailed prices date a guidebook too much, but as a traveler, I'd like to get an idea whether this boat excursion or that historic house is within my general budget. Restaurants, on the other hand, are broken into price categories, and include terse yet informative descriptive information about the cuisine, location, and atmosphere. As a native, I'm well aware that hotels in Rhode Island are just plain more expensive than they are in other parts of the country. If you want to sleep in luxury, you can find some great direction from this guide. For a deal, I'd recommend utilizing Internet search engines. The low single-dollar-sign category in this book refers to hotels under a "mere" $95 (as of 2000).

There is something to be said for compact guidebooks, and this is not one. It is a generously oversized paperback with thick pages and both large fonts and margins. This isn't a book to tuck into your extra backpack pocket when trekking around. Then again, all that extra text left the authors room to inform me that Goddard Park was man-made by two generations of owners and is cited as one of the best man-made forestry projects of all time. Now, that's a new fact to try out on my parents!

Not Just for Tourists.......2001-11-11

This is a great book! Every time I am stumped on a local history question I can turn to this book and find the answer painlessly. As a guide to restaurants and attractions it just can't be beat. I recommend this book to locals and visitors as a great reference source.

Dust off your Ph.d and Try to Decipher the Options Market.......2001-05-21

An executive I respect felt that this book by one of his old professors would give great insight to Foreign Currency Option Stategies. As more of a fundamental analyst than a technician I was mostly lost. I struggled through a master's and most of a doctorate, but statistics was always a pain. Beware that advanced mathematical underpinnings are crucial to the enjoyment of the book. For the amateur who wants to understand why rocket scientists (for real) are hired from Cal Poly and MIT to run Wall Street trading programs, we;;, just keep this book near your computer when you think your day trading will beat the pros.

Excellent book for beginner and up.......2007-02-22

I will say at the start that I do not have much finance experience. I took a few classes in college, but that was the extent. This book covers the basics, such as budgeting, and moves on up to investment plans and strategies. I would recommend this for anyone who is worrying that they're not planning for the future. easy read

Great book However.......2007-07-18

This is a great book that has great pictures and wonderful information on how to choose and start an alternative lawn. I give it 5 stars because it truly provides what it touts, perhaps with a little extra unnecessary information.
However, EASY LAWNS by Brooklyn Botanic Gardens gives all you need to know at half the price. It, too, has nice pictures. It is smaller and a paperback where WILD LAWN HANDBOOK is a hardcover.

An indispensable guide for progressive gardeners.......1997-06-20

There are quite a few books out now about why we shouldn't stick with the traditional grass lawn, but this is the best one I've seen to explain the practical alternatives, with inspiring photos and helpful appendices. Ms. Daniels is really concerned with the aesthetics as well as the politics of environmentally friendly yards. I recommend it to all my friends who are thinking about getting rid of some or all of the grass. A "9" just because I wish it had more pictures

Small, short book on an interesting topic.......2005-06-20

I got this for a friend who has native beach grasses instead of a traditional lawn, and she was able to glean useful information out of it. It's a very short book, and it doesn't cover every climate possible, but it also doesn't set out to do that. There are plenty of good alternative ideas for your lawn. I recommend this to anyone who wants to conserve water, do something natural, or try something a little different.

This book is one of the "primers" on specific subjects that have been available
from the Brooklyn Botanic garden since I was a teenager just startng in horticulture.
I have never been disappointed in a book from this institution - they usually
provide practical, science-based advice on the topic in question, such that
gardeners can immediately apply what they've learned. Strongly recommended
for "Master Gardeners" as an information resource and also recommended
to folks who need practical help.

99% of this book is GREAT!.......2006-08-15

I have a 13 year old daughter, and this book really resonated with me. I was pleasantly surprised to find that I already fit in the "Uncool Mom" category, but I still learned a lot from the common sense tips. I also really enjoyed the way that this book is written, with humor and anecdotes that keep you in stitches while helping you understand your daughter just a little better.

My one problem with the book was when the author recommended not teaching abstinance. I do think that it's naive to ONLY teach abstinance, but I think teaching kids that abstinance is an option is very important. By not teaching abstinance at all, but teaching kids about safe sex, what they will hear is that they are expected to have pre-marital sex. When you teach abstinance AND safe sex in conjunction, you are telling them that if they don't want to, it's a valid choice and they should feel confident in it, and if they do choose to have sex, here's how to stay safe.

Easy read with a few laughs.......2005-08-18

I am preparing for a teenage daughter (in about 3 years) and am trying to open myself up to a variety of tactics to handle those bouts of emotions. This book was an easy read and came with a few laughs, to prepare for the onslaught of teenage cruelty. The author shares her experiences with the rest of us, but it is up to us to decide what is best for our children. As an Uncool mom in training, I recommend this book to glean different perspectives in adolescent separation.

excellent with one big BUT...........2005-06-03

I really liked this book except for one thing which echoes what a previous reviewer said. teens can and do abstain. I know quite a few of them. people in the media saying that kids cant abstain so teaching abstinance leads to a downward spiral: who wants to try and do the impossible.
this aside though, this is an excellent book. I read some of the parts to my husband and we wondered if this woman has been in our home eavesdropping.

Laughing all the way to adulthood.......2004-07-24

I am the mother of a 14 year-old girl. She's a great kid, but when she went away to camp for a month and people asked me if I missed her, I said, "NO."

I'm a pretty good mom; I used to teach teenagers, and I have some clue about what this age is about. Still, Borowitz's book had me laughing out loud, and while I was laughing, some new ideas slipped in. Life post-camp is looking a little brighter.

Hilarious and helpful.......2003-12-03

Okay, I'm not a parent, let alone parent of a teenager...but I will be someday, and I'm interested, so I'm thinking about it and reading up. Here's what I'm thinking about this book:

I love it. It's wryly funny -- even occasionally hysterical -- and much of it rings true from watching my relatives bring up teenagers, being one not too long ago myself (though I didn't have some of the more extreme issues I notice in others), watching my own mom cope with me, and seeing the daily struggles between my peers and their moms when we were teens. There's a lot of "common sense" here, but don't let that statement fool you into thinking the book's useless; the best of us sometimes forget to exercise our "common" sense.

I particularly appreciate the ("common sense?") idea that moms should not fall into the trap of being "clueless" or the opposite trap of being your daughter's "cool" best friend. The best way to be both parent and friend is to be what Mrs. Borowitz calls "the uncool mom:" setting good boundaries, remaining in control, being yourself, picking your battles, and butting out when your daughter needs to manage on her own (which is more often than you think.) My own mother did a generally great job of this, and we are now what one might call "best friends" as adults -- still very much mother-daughter, but with mutual respect, friendship, and tolerance built out of (usually, and usually this was Mom's doing) handling our conflicts in a healthy way when I was a minor. This book is written by a mom who sounds a lot like mine...but even my mom could have learned something from her.

Triumph Indeed.......2000-02-09

Hugh Callaghan was convicted of the Birmingham pub bombings in 1975, along with 5 other men, and was sentenced to life imprisonment. He was also completely innocent of every charge brought against him. This is his story, from his upbringing in Belfast and later life in Birmingham to the night that changed his life forever. It tells about the fitup, the kangaroo court trials, the police brutality, the life in prison, the refusal for many years by anyone bar a few people to believe in the innocence of the Birmingham Six. It is a damning indictment of a "justice" system which would rather a quick result than the truth and does not care about the people it destroys in the process. It is also a story of hope and of how the world can be changed when there are enough people doing it. This book is a must read for anyone who cares about true justice.
