Description:
Marine aerosols are formed primarily by the eruption of rising bubbles through the sea-surface microlayer (SML), and aerosol formation is the main vector for transport of bacteria and viruses across the air-sea interface. The processes by which materials are transported to and through the SML to the atmosphere results in an enrichment in the SML of microbial and other organisms. We evaluated concentrations of marine bacteria and viruses in natural aerosols and in those simulated by bubbling sea sprays and compared them to the concentrations in SML (200-400@mm thick) and in subsurface water. Association of microorganisms with transparent gel-like organic particles and physiological status of bacteria were also assessed. We found a 15-25-fold enrichment in bacteria and viruses during transport from subsurface waters to the SML, and then into the atmosphere. The majority of microorganisms in aerosols were found embedded in the organic particles. Large portions of microorganisms in the SML were also associated with the particles, while in subsurface waters most of them were free-living. A larger percentage of damaged and less active bacterial cells occur in the microlayer than in subsurface waters, and preliminary data suggest that an even greater percentage occurs in aerosols. Our data support the idea that the SML in a major source of microorganisms entering the atmosphere from water bodies. Aerosolization is potentially an important long-distance dispersal mechanism and may account for observed cosmopolitan distributions of some bacteria.

A semiempirical model for bacterial growth and bioleaching of Acidithiobacillus spp. was developed based on the concept of transport phenomena. Only one mathematical equation and three parameters evaluated from the experimental data are required to describe the complicated bioleaching process, regardless of the source and concentration of the microorganism, the concentration, composition, and physical characteristics (particle size, shape, distribution, and porosity, etc.) of the solid substrate, the concentrations of the leaching products and byproducts, and the leaching conditions (pH, temperature, agitation, etc.). In order to evaluate the semiempirical model, five kinetic models proposed previously were compared. The results of mean deviations show that our model fits their experimental data explicitly well, even better than the corresponding models. Furthermore, the semiempirical model can be successfully used to predict the bacterial growth and bioleaching behaviors in different leaching systems, i.e. direct, indirect, direct and indirect, and simultaneous leaching.

The transport of the spores of Pasteuria penetrans was studied in three contrasted textured soils (a sandy, a sandy-clay and a clay soils), cultivated with tomato, inoculated with juveniles of Meloidogyne javanica and watered with 25 or 150mmday^-^1. One month after inoculation of the nematodes, 53% of the spores inoculated were leached by water flow in the sandy soil but only 14% in the sandy-clay soil and 0.1% in the clay soil. No nematodes survived in the clay soil, while the population was multiplied both in the sandy and in the sandy-clay soils. But juveniles of M. javanica were more infected by P. penetrans in the sandy-clay soil than in the sandy soil. Comparing different combinations of bare soils containing 1.1-57% of clay showed that the best spore percolation and retention balance occurred in soils amended with 10-30% clay. However, the spore recoveries decreased when the soil was enriched with more than 30% clay. The role of clay particles on the extractability of spores and on their availability to attach to the nematode cuticle in the soil is discussed.

This is the most comprehensive guide to cheap investments! When I started thinking about stock investments, I ran across this book and it made all the difference in the world. This book has all the information a beginning investor will need and still now as an amateur investor I still find this book helpful. I recommend it for anyone looking to invest.

This is a great reference to take with you anywhere. The examples are clear and consice, and if you've forgotten how to do something, you can handily turn the page and find it. A great reference for anyone, no matter the knitting experience, to keep in their knitting bag.
Good Basic Reference.......2007-08-19
This book is a good reference for the basics. There are other books that will fit into your knitting bag that provide much more information. This one is a good basic "how-to" that has been invaluable to me as a novice knitter. I particularly like that it will lay flat when opened.
Again, this is a great basic reference book and it has been very useful to me. As my skills have improved, I have found other books that provide more information but I still come back to this one because of its easy-to-understand format.
Portable is right.......2007-05-14
I bought this book to be a major reference book for my knitting library. The book's advantages are the sprial-binding, which allows it to stay open and easily accessed even while your hands are full with your knitting, and the book is thin and light, which is perfect for adding it to your knitting bag. A con is a lot of the more advanced techniques are taken out (compared to the complete Vogue Knitting Reference book). Since I plan on using this book mostly at home, I'm now kicking myself for not buying the more complete knitting reference book. I would suggest buying the other one if you plan on keeping this book at home and not carry it around in your knitting bag.

I got this book as a birthday present and couldn't be more pleased. I taught myself how to knit and this book has helped me refine my skills without have a large book to carry around. I am hoping to get the big Vogue book soon but this has been great.

I bought this because I wanted diagrams of how to KFB and SSK. At first I did not like that the diagrams are not directly correlated to the standard abbreviations (instead there is a section on increasing and the various methods, decreasing and the various methods etc...). However, now that I am used to it, it is very helpful. It may not be a good book for an a beginner to start with, but once you are beyond the basics it is good. It is one of the few books that is straight forward, no frills, and covers basic technique clearly with NO useless little cute projects (a plus in my opinion because there are so many other great books for that). I would have like more on knitting in the round, especially with color, but I think that would be rare to find in any book. :)

I have made many of the recipes in this book for my son who is now 1 year old and he has enjoyed them all. Most of the recipes are quite easy and not very time-consuming. There are many that are good for the whole family to enjoy. I love this book so much I am going to purchase a few others by this author.

I needed a baby food for dummies type book and this is one of a few I liked! Its very easy to use, has good explanations and so far seems to provide correct information with regards to foods to avoid, list of approved foods, etc. I like the charts that provide an at-a-glance for what is okay to feed, etc. Definitely worth the money!
Great ideas, but some are questionable .......2007-01-06
I love many of the meals in this book and they are generally easy to prepare (I love that many of them can be frozen), but I think some of the suggestions are questionable for small babies (for example a lot of tomatoes and onions). Otherwise, I love it and would suggest it to any moms interested in making homemade baby food.
Too meat intensive.......2006-11-09
We hastily bought this book for a friend and just as quickly returned it after taking a look at it's content. If you're still on the carnivor boat and wish to expose your child to the high dioxin and chemical load found in meat, then this book's for you. If you're a bit more informed and concerned about the contamination of meat, then look elsewhere for alternative nutrition and recipe info.
As a pharmacist, let me tell you that children are exceptionally sensitive to the chemical contamination that is in U.S. produced meat. This ain't the good ol' days and meat has changed. Be very careful where your animal products come from or consider eliminating them altogether.

Good recipies, but conflicting Information........2007-10-06
As a first time mom making babyfood at home, I thought this book would help me outline a plan of when and what to feed my baby. However, I was disappointed that the plan it gave was based on starting a 4 month old on solids and juice, both which were discouraged by my pediatrician. I started my baby at 6 months, so I found it hard to follow this plan. And it also had its readers introduce more than one new food at once, also discouraged. I may use a couple of the recipies when my baby gets older, but as for the "Healthy Baby Meal Plan" it was not useful.

I found the pictures to be cute, and the information presented in a very clear manner. However, the recipes were not basic enough for my busy schedule.

It's a good start for those who want to make homemade food and don't know where to begin. There are some interesting recipes in there. Just watch the ingredients if you're worried about allergies in infants. Many of these contain egg yolks or dairy, which may not be recommended in your baby's age group. I was excited to get it, but have to admit I didn't use much.
Not really a meal planner.......2006-08-02
This book gets 2 stars for its nice recipies and cute dancing vegetables. Other reviewers have brought up safety/health concerns, but my main beef is that it calls itself a meal planner. Though it does have a requisite page for each age group featuring a "meal plan", I don't know how you'd accomplish such a meal plan unless you employ a nanny to watch your babe(s) while you cook, or a full time chef to make these baby foods for you. I was hoping for practical advice about actual meal planning and EFFICIENT ways to mesh baby feeding with feeding the rest of the family. I found none of that here. The closest she comes is to say that certain purees would make good soups for adults.
Too English for us Yanks?.......2005-10-07
I was excited to order this pretty book, hoping that I would find new inspiration. Alas, it seems ill-suited to a North American market. Beyond the neverending variation on purees, the taste combinations are often just too odd, the recipes too time consuming, and the "advice" too off-putting (when it's not completely out of step with US pediatric standards). A much older kid might go for these taste combinations, but not any toddler or pre-schooler I know. If I were a kid in London, I'd head straight for Nigella Lawson's.

Book Description
W. E. Gladstone towers over the politics of the nineteenth century. He is known for his policies of financial rectitude, his campaigns to settle the Irish question and his championship of the rights of small nations. He remains the only British Prime Minister to have served for four separate terms. In 1998 an international conference at Chester College brought together Gladstone scholars to mark the centenary of his death, and many of the papers presented on that occasion are published in this volume. Covering the whole of the statesman’s long political life from the first Reform Act to the last decade of the nineteenth century, they range over topics as diverse as parliamentary reform and free trade, Gladstone’s English Nonconformist supporters and his Irish Unionist opponents. A select bibliography, arranged by subject, supplies guidance for further research. The collection forms a tribute, appreciative but critical, to the Grand Old Man of British politics.
