This book is awesome! It is packed with SO much information. Carol covers everything. She answers questions I didn't even know I had until I read the answer! She tells you what you NEED to get started, useful items you may want to purchase and what items are best to not purchase until you have more experience. She has saved me a ton of money just with those suggestions. This book is WELL worth the money and one you will refer to time and time again.

This is an indispensable book to the long arm machine quilter. It is jam packed with information about LAMs so if you add it to your personal library and it will be referred to again and again. There is information on care, maintenance, troubleshooting, how to improve your work, what to look for in a machine, tons of tips and she also touches on technique here and there although it isn't a how to book. Look elsewhere for actual patterns.

You've seen the long-arm machine ads in your favorite quilting magazines. What could be more helpful to finish that never-ending stack of quilt tops that you've been happily producing than your own long-arm quilting machine? Wait a minute! Before you rush out and buy the first long-arm machine that you come across, you need to read "Long-Arm Machine Quilting" by Carol A. Thelen.

Ms. Thelen is an accomplished long-arm machine quilter with a degree in mechanical engineering to boot. She shares her vast knowledge of long-arm machine quilting in this wonderful resource.

The book assumes no prior knowledge of quilting machines. The first chapter begins with an explanation of the quilting system followed by an introduction to the seven major manufacturers of long-arm quilting machines. Information is also included about optional electronics such as the Intellistitch I/S-2K controller and the Statler Stitcher. The chapter ends with comparison chart of features so that you can see how each machine stacks up against the others. This chapter alone makes this an incredible value for those who are looking for the right machine to fit their quilting needs.

The next three chapters take you through the functions of a long-arm machine, the tools and accessories that you will need to get started, and the supplies such as needles, thread, and batting. This is followed by a wonderful chapter that will help you choose your backing fabric and plan your quilting design.

Chapter Six is where you'll find how to load your quilt onto the machine, thread the machine, bring up your bobbin thread, rip out stitches, and much more. The following chapters explore the options that you have for long-arm machine quilting including quilting with pantographs and other patterns, freehand and semi-freehand quilting ,and specialty techniques such as embellishments, couching, bobbin drawing, wholecloth quilts, chenille, and t-shirt quilts.

This is a great book for the beginner Long Arm quilter or people who don't have a long arm machine but are thinking of buying one. Even if you have been quilting for years, there is always something more to learn. Great details on maintaining machines but also on different quilting styles. I loved this book and hopes Carol writes another one. (although this book has every thing)

I am so happy I have this book, it brought tears to my eyes as I have been reading it. I have a daughter who is now almost 7 years of age, who has special needs. I have been through so much with Doctor's and testing, and sometimes forget about what else is going on in life. I think anyone who's going through a challenge with their child being a little different from the rest, should own a copy of this book. It's sense that should be common, for both parents and doctor's.

Being the mother of 4, with 3 who are absolutely normal, I feel even more blessed with having 1 child who is different, and this book really confirms I'm not alone in thinking that way. Thank you Judy, for taking the time to write this book. I hope every parent going through these sorts of challenges, is able to read this book!

I read this book from cover to cover in one night! It is so refreshing for me to read a book for special needs parenting that focuses on positive parenting, but also addresses the real life daily needs. Seeing our children as a unique, talented, treasure! I found every chapter to have useful, realistic information for parents and professionals. I am the parent of two sons with special needs and two daughters without, and Ms. Winter includes wonderful encouragement on raising the siblings of special needs. As a young man, Antoni Tapies set out to study law; less than two years later, he had declared himself a painter. He became one of Spain's greatest artists, and one of his generation's greatest, winner of the Venice Biennale's Golden Lion and the subject of Guggenheim and Jeu de Paume retrospectives. This eighth volume of his catalogue raisonne assembles his most recent work, from 1998 to 2004. In recent years he has consolidated and condensed an artistic language that expresses in visual terms, first, his conception of art, and, second, intimate philosophical concerns to which he has returned with the passage of time. His forms, despite their ductility, remain faithful to their origins: these works are at once of the moment, of the contemporary world, and a record, an analysis, of his career.

Antoni Tapies was born in 1923 to a Barcelona family of publishers and booksellers. He began drawing and painting as a young man, during a convalescence, and in the end gave up studying law to concentrate on art. By the 1940s, in his 20s, Tapies was already exhibiting widely. As an early Matter painter, he added dirt and other solids to his canvases, transmuting them into art and reminding viewers of the earth to which they would return. Later, in the era of Arte Povera, he worked in foam rubber and spray, varnishes and, for creating objects or sculptures, refractory clay and bronze. Coming from a bookish family, he also produced a number of artist's books and editions, working with collaborators such as Joseph Brodsky and Jose Saramago. This collection of the artist's writings is available here for the first time in English. An interview with Manuel Borja-Villel, Director of the MACBA in Spain, completes the volume.

This is a beautifully photographed art book packed with inspirational text and imagery. It shows a broad spectrum of Tapies works from 1945 through to 2003. I am very impressed & will refer to it for many years to come.

At Last!.......2000-02-23

This is a book that has been needed ever since the historic Abbey Theatre became one of the first to hang picures of its artists on the upstairs lobby walls. Even though the actors' ephemeral art is in some cases lost to the world because some of these artists weren't filmed, the Abbey is an example to all theatres to memorialize those who gave their lives to it. As an arts journalist who covered the Dublin Theatre Festival and leads theatre tours to Ireland, I can testify to the desire to learn more about the theatre people in these portraits (some by Ireland's most famous artists). My first visit to the Abbey Theatre coincided with the death of the beloved actor Cyril Cusack. His portrait was draped in black and, on the front page of the Irish Times, was a picture of his coffin being lowered into the grave while, by its side, clapping their hands in a last ovation,were his actress daughters Sinead, Niamh and Sorcha and his son-in-law actor Jeremy Irons. Thank you, Micheal O'Haodha!
