The bulk of the book contains superb color photographs of the flowering plants, the majority taken close up to display the details of individual flowers and leaves. There are brief plant descriptions, with notes on habitat and distribution, including occurrences in other States and overseas.

The text is simply written with a minimum of botanical terms that are covered by an excellent glossary.

An Interesting and Enjoyable Read.......2004-11-24

Vandal's Crown is written with an easy and enjoyable style that makes a potentially difficult subject fascinating. You do not need a lot of prior knowledge about financial instruments to follow it as he clearly explains the basic hows and whys of each of them. Also, he interweaves relevant anecdotal text that has you smiling as you learn. My primary complaint is that the overall structure of the material makes it a bit difficult to see the themes of the book until you are well into the material. Despite this, I highly recommend it and will probably read it a second time.

Well Worth Reading........2004-08-26

Read this well documented book if you are a currency trader and you want to learn a well researched history of currency markets. You'll have a better understanding of "behind closed doors" government intervention and what to watch for on the news. A little difficult to read at times due to its depth, but well worth it for the fundmental knowledge gained.

A book everyone needs to read.......2004-02-10

Talk about a book that everyone should read, but no one will, this is it. A terrific, plain language explanation of the origins of money and how understanding money leads to political sophistication and concommitant societal benefits.

This book makes many cogent arguments that deal with war and external defense, interior political and civil stabilty, the societal need for a stable currency, the need for a rule of law to protect private property rights, and the implications of the velocity and movements of global currency trading. It does a great job of explaning financial derivitives, options, inflation, debasement of the currency via political corruption, and financial globalization of trade and currencies.

It contains a marvelous retelling of history thru the eyes of a currency sophisticate, one who incorporates a history of revolutions, and the subsequent rebuildings of the societies that gain prominence in their aftermath.

The backdrop for this fascinating tale is the rise of the micro-chip, the story of the digital revolution. This running-wild tale illustrates how technology has outstripped the ability of dictators to throttle it, and how society has commensurately reaped the benefits. It's a paradigm for the future and deserves to be more widely understood. It has shaken up the strangle hold of one political philosophy ruling the media, and in the future it will reform tort law and academia. It's all here for those willing to study it.

Read it!

A review of this Great Book........2001-08-10

This book, although presenting complex concepts, is easy to understand through is storytelling type narrative. It talks very in an engaging and human manner of topics and concepts and written otherwise be considered too esoteric for the layman. This book is good if your interested in finance and trading, as well as the new financial weapons of traders that are (really) more powerful than politicians could ever be. I am probably biased, but the book is so good. It is even relevant today, even years after it was written. The book's analysis of past events, such as the reasons for the rocketing jump in Treasury bond yields in 1994 or the reasons behind the crash of the ERM are excellent.

adventures in currency trading.......2001-02-13

I found this book difficult to follow at times. However, it was very informative about the history of currency and options trading. This is a very interesting history. A greek philosopher, a secret love affair which resulted in a duel to the death and extensive pilitical corruption all took part in this history. This political corruption involved governments inflating the value of their countrys currency. A few people realized what the government was up to. These people are the "Rebel Currency traders." This book is about their cause to take away the power of the government to set the value of their country's currency, and give the power to the international market. The book is worth reading.

A Great Knitting Reference Book.......2007-08-21

I was lucky enough to find this book in a library sale, and I love it. It has expanded my knowledge of knitting as well as the possibilities of knit wear. It has charts as well as written directions for patterns, which is a great help for those of us who are visual learners. Even as a novice knitter, I found it easy to use and understand. Highly recommended for anyone who wants to design their own patterns.

THE Standby Reference.......2007-01-10

Mary Thomas is one of the best all around knitting references there is. Her first book, Mary Thomas' Knitting Book, approaches every angle of knitting from a practical and sensible point of view. She doesn't raise knitting to an art form, as so many of today's popular knitting mavens try to do, but approaches it from the practical level of a craft, as it should be, in my opinion.

In this, her second book, the reader is given loads of stitch patterns and suggestions on how to use many of them. Practically everything Nicky Epstein put in her books is an adaptation of something in Mary Thomas' in one form or another. Just goes to show you, there's nothing new under the sun! Certainly, this book isn't as all encompassing as Barbara Walker's Treasury volumes, but for such a small book, the reader is given a most far reaching and complete treatment of nearly every kind of knitted fabric from solid fabrics to lace, motifs to medallions, and practical and amazingly complete instruction on designing your own garments and other projects. The "By The Way" chapter at the end gives a lot of the signature Mary Thomas historical information on knitting tools, knitting humor, transcribing a pattern, and caring for your woolens. The book is sprinkled throughout with factual historical gems and trivia that make Mary Thomas so readable and enjoyable.

Because I learned to read charts from Mary Thomas' books, I think they are easy to follow, but the symbols are different than most knitting books on the market today. The key provided for the symbols is self explanatory and simple enough that even a beginner can catch on quickly with a little work and attention.

If I had only two knitting books in my library, they would both be by Mary Thomas. Under her instruction, I learned to knit socks, gloves, mittens, and made my first original (or so I thought at the time) sweater pattern. I recently had to buy a new copy to replace my mother's worn and falling apart copy. I keep both of this author's books close at hand. I own a lot of knitting books, many of them very expensive, but very few are as helpful and complete as the Mary Thomas books.

Wonderful Illustrated knitting patterns.......2006-07-14

A must have for your knitting library collection.

As per description, " Special attention is given throughout to explaining the how and why of each pattern...." , and yes, by descriptions of why and how, you have a reason to pick out specific patterns for your project.

This is a wonderful, soft cover, easy to leaf through book, has excellent pictures, black and white, and great explanations of charting.

In Mary Thomas' words, There is no work more ingenious than Knitting and that is why it has lasted so many centuries.

So go for it, and enjoy this book.

Mary Thomas's Jewel of a Book.......2006-05-27

This small black and white book from the World War II era is a reminder of a time when most women had a higher literacy in the skills of knitting, sewing, and clothing alterations. It lacks a lot of handholding, has no color plates, but makes up for it in the intelligent approach to knitting stitch presentation.

It may be great for some beginners who are familiar with textile arts if not knitting, yet other beginners will be confused with the brevity of the instructions and the lack of color photos and projects to replicate.

It is my absolute favorite knitting book, because it explains the techniques for developing stitches systematically. Every time I learn something new from this small and unassuming book.

If you understand the most basic stitch, then you can see the steps that lead to creating new stitches, or more elaborate laces from the lowly yarn over. The small drawings of stitch samples are accurate and detailed.

Both charts and word instructions are given for many stitches.
Recommended for intermediate or better knitters as a learning expanding reference with few words, or a historic artifact to look through for students of knitting.

A delightful classic.......2006-03-03

As a beginning knitter, I take great joy in this book. Sure, I can't do an eighth of it yet, and most of it is Greek to me, but I dream of the days when I, too, can churn out yards of Brioche stitch -- ah! Most of crafting is anticipation, and I'm at fever pitch about my future knitting, thanks to Mary Thomas.

I love this tape! I've had it for a few years and have lent it to every mom I know. I listen to it periodically when I need a refresher of Barbara's practical advice for dealing with many of the day-to-day parenting challenges. I highly recommend it for any parent.

I discovered this Audio Tape when my son was 4. I credit it with providing me with the parenting and communication skills to help him become the confident, independent, communicative and resourseful 16 year old he is today. I would recommend this tape and the book "Kids are Worth It" by the same author to every parent.

According to Sharon Paiva Stephan, the talents of 19th-century artist, businesswoman and writer Celia Laighton Thaxter will always find readers and viewers. It was her special skills at gardening, turning commonly used objects into works of art, throwing parties, and writing. As ONE WOMAN'S WORK says, Thaxter could, just as well, grow flowers, paint them onto china, put them in vases, or turn them into poetry.

Other than a semester at Mt Washington Female Seminary in Boston, Thaxter learned what she knew by home schooling and by painting lessons with Boston Impressionist Childe Hassam. Just plain observing nature also had a lot to do with her delicately detailed style. She was often seen carrying magnifying glasses and sketchbooks. The sketches usually showed up later in her book illustrations and her hand-painted china designs of olive branches, poppies, scarlet pimpernel and seaweed.

Also, Thaxter's sketches probably joggled her memory for writing. AN ISLAND GARDEN ended up among the best autobiographical garden books from the late 19th and early 20th centuries. That work alone grouped her with respected women garden writers Helena Rutherford Ely, Mrs Francis King, Anna B Warner, and Louise Beebe Wilder.

Thaxter moved into gardening and writing naturally, out of admiration for John Audubon. She was an early protector of endangered birds. Because of what she did and wrote, much of the Isles of the Shoals, off coastal Maine, became bird sanctuaries. Specifically, Appledore island, where she ran a successful hotel business, became a summer research spot managed by Cornell and New Hampshire universities.

Her garden of mainly Burpee and Dreer seeds was destroyed by fire in 1914. Not destroyed was the garden information in Hassam's paintings, many old photographs, and Thaxter's writings. So John M Kingsbury of Cornell University brought back, in time for the United States Bicentennial, the Thaxter garden of asters, hollyhocks, larkspurs, lilies, love-in-a-mist, mignonette, sweet rocket, verbenas, and wildflowers.

During her life Thaxter's garden kept on going, beyond the sweet pea-covered fence, in one direction up vine-covered walls, into the house. There every spacetop had vases, each with 1-2 blossoms. In another direction poppy seeds were left, unweeded after May, to bloom wildly down the bank right to the sea's edge!

Late 19th-century dress tended towards colors too. But Celia Laighton Thaxter stood out in blacks, grays or whites. Photographs in the garden often showed her covered up in a white duster.
