    Book Description

The central thesis of this book is that Volvox and its unicellular and colonial relatives provide a wholly unrivaled opportunity to explore the proximate and ultimate causes underlying the evolution from unicellular ancestors of multicellular organisms with fully differentiated cell types. A major portion of the book is devoted to reviewing what is known about the genetic, cellular and molecular basis of development in the most extensively studied species of Volvox: V. cateri, which exhibits a complete division of labor between mortal somatic cells and immortal germ cells. However, this topic has been put in context by first considering the ecological conditions and cytological preconditions that appear to have fostered the evolution of organisms of progressively increasing size and with progressively increasing tendency to produce terminally differentiated somatic cells. The book concludes by raising the question of whether the germ-soma dichotomy may have evolved by similar or different genetic pathways in different species of Volvox.

5 out of 5 stars The Bible of Green Yeast.......1999-09-22

This book is THE reference on Chlamydomonas, the single celled alga sometimes called "green yeast". The sourcebook contains detailed protocols for working with this organism, as well as comprehensive information about its cell biology, metabolism, etc. The only drawback is that this book is somewhat old, and was written before many of the molecular tools for working with Chlamydomonas were perfected, such as transformation or positional cloning using BAC libraries. Still, anyone interested in Chlamydomonas MUST get this book.

I travelled to Israel a few years ago, bringing both the Lonely Planet guide and the Let's Go. I found Let's Go to be better on most counts, more up-to-date and with more relevant info, plus a larger selection of good places to stay and/or eat. In addition, Let's Go's recent-history section was far better. In fact, the only thing I liked better about Lonely Planet's guide was that it was printed on nicer paper.

                    Book Description

Most of us are in the stock market, but few of us understand how it really works. This book explains the hidden dynamics of Wall Street, and its message is urgent and disturbing.

As stock prices and investor confidence have collapsed in the wake of Enron, WorldCom, and the dot-com crash, people want to know how this happened and how to make sense of the uncertain times to come.

Into the breach comes one of Wall Street's legendary investors, Leon Levy, to explain why the market so often confounds us, and why those who ought to understand it tend to get chewed up and spat out. Levy, who pioneered many of the innovations and investment instruments that we now take for granted, has prospered in every market for the past fifty years, particularly in today's bear market. In The Mind of Wall Street he recounts stories of his successes and failures to illustrate how investor psychology and willful self-deception so often play critical roles in the process. Like his peers George Soros and Warren Buffett, Levy takes a long and broad view of the rhythms of the markets and the economy. He also offers a provocative analysis of the spectacular Internet bubble, showing that the market has not yet completely recovered from its bout of "irrational exuberance."

The Mind of Wall Street is essential reading for all of us, whether we are active traders or simply modest contributors to our 401(k) plans, as volatile and unnerving markets come to define so much of our net worth.

                    4 out of 5 stars A Good Read!.......2004-10-13

The late, legendary Wall Street investor Leon Levy offers a glimpse into his financial mind in this easily digested work, which is part memoir and part study of investor psychology. Writing with journalist Eugene Linden, he persuasively argues that investors' moodiness often drives the market as much as any fundamentals. Unlike many Wall Street investment strategies, Levy's approach was long-term. And as this book shows, Levy's ego was refreshingly understated. Yet his modesty proves this memoir's biggest weakness. He declines to criticize his rivals and walks us through his triumphs in only a cursory way. At the same time that he's leaving juicy details out of his memoir, he also gives short shrift to his study of investor psychology. Still, the biggest criticism of this book is that it should have been longer. We recommend this memoir to investors interested in learning from a master.

5 out of 5 stars Rare Insight from a Seasoned Professional.......2004-09-30

If you are looking for a secret formula to accumulate wealth in the stock market, don't buy this book.

Leon Levy, a founder of Oppenheimer Funds, Odyssey Partners and legendary investor, reflects on his more than 50 years of investing experience to explain why the market confounds so many. He borrows from his avocations, psychology and archaeology, for perceptive insights into the financial landscape.

Success in finance, he says, is an art form, not a science. It relies on the vagaries of the human condition. Readers who search this book for a secret wealth formula will be disappointed. The only door, Levy says, that leads consistently to wealth, is access to privileged information. As many have recently discovered, this path is fraught with peril.

Yet, if investing is an art form, it can be learned. The best way is to put yourself on the line. Take a position. Players outperform professors. Recognize your weaknesses. Seek to control them.

I was particularly interested in Levy's insights into the collapse of Savings and Loans, the hedge fund Long Term Capital Management and the Internet Bubble.

This book does not belong in the class bad books written by bored billionaire investors, too many of whom have confused luck with insight. Although these individuals have a high regard for themselves, clarity, coherence and conciseness are not among the qualities which contributed to their success.

Leon Levy is likeable, incredibly informed and nothing short of brilliant. Investors for generations to come will be grateful he finished his discourse on of greed's perils and the market's mysteries.

2 out of 5 stars Well written, short on facts, long on Levy's story........2004-08-04

A hundred pages into the book, I stopped and said "Wait, where's the psychology of Wall Street this book touts?" and realized the book is no more than a work touting Levy's every move.

While entertaining and well written, the book is a fast read that is short on substantial information. The book is interesting; it just falls very short of providing any sort of substantial fact or opinion on his psychology of the street premise.

1 out of 5 stars Total Waste of TIME.......2004-04-23

This book is an example of how someone with a decent track record in investing thinks they can be as successful in writing, but then fail miserably at creating anything meaningful. I was able to finish this book in less than 9 hours!

The author actually makes an attempt at explaining the market based on the theories and doctrines of Behavioral Finance, or so he says. Unfortunately, the book is nothing more than a ramble about the "excess of the late 90's", as if we need more literature on that subject. In reality, the book would be thrown out of Behavioral Finance class rooms as a miserable failure.

In one instance, the author refers to Amazon.Com as "nothing more than a mail order house". He also suggests that Amazon's model of selling books is not going to be sufficient to bring this company to profitability. Hmm...Maybe an update is required but this book was published in 2002!!

Throughout the book, the author constantly refers to his and his firm's success, suggesting this to be nothing more than a $15 advertisement. There is no resemblance to work such as "Reminiscence of a Stock Operator", which is the classic book on speculator psychology. Unless you have never ever invested in the market and have nothing more than a basic understanding of what an investment is, don't buy this book. Instead, consider work by Schwager, LeFevre, Bernard Baruch and even classic Technical Analysis work such as "TA of Stock Trends", which goes more into the psychology behind successful investing than this author. I also highly recommend the two books written by Victor Neiderhoffer.

In instances where the author actually begins to discuss anything remotely close to behavioral finance, he immediately drops off into another subject. He continually refers to the subjects of Greed and Fear. However, greed and fear are merely symptoms of the herd mentality. Nothing new there!

On the plus side, Ch. 12 covers EuroDollar Call Options and the benefits of trading these instruments when playing the interest rate curve. Unfortunately, in the middle of this discussion which was no more than a page, he changes the subject abruptly and begins talking about the benefits of archeological digs in present day Syria and why one should make philanthropic donations based on trust. This is literally the next paragraph after EuroDollars!!!

If you have an advanced grasp of markets, read "Alchemy of Finance". This is in fact the greatest work on the subject and quite honestly, the recent implementation of Behavioral Finance as a course of study amongst many universities is based on the work of George Soros, the greatest speculator of all time, and his "Theory of Reflexivity", which was first introduced in Alchemy of Finance.

4 out of 5 stars Psychology and Experience.......2004-02-24

Leon Levy died in December 2002. He was one of the grand old men of Wall Street. The founder of the Oppenheimer mutual funds, he built himself a truly substantial fortune in the market (Forbes 400 list). This book is not a compendium of investment techniques but the history of an astute trader and a glimpse of how he saw the market. His outlook is largely a combination of basic economics and psychology which appear to have about equal weight. Just before Levy died he wrote an interesting but pessimistic essay on the future of America's economy. He pointed out that there is more than a sniff of deflation in the air. He may still be right. The deflation may be masked by government sponsored financial inflation. On balance, a very interesting book.

They'll also find problems that are modeled on the AICPA 'Simulations' - a new question format designed for the computerized uniform CPA Exam. These problems prepare readers for the exam, testing their ability to read, digest, research and respond to both a numeric problem and a short answer essay. This edition does NOT include the Problem Solving Survival Guide

I couldn't believe it when I got this thing in the mail. The data set for the software is on a FLOPPY DISK! How many students have even seen one? It's almost impossible to buy a computer with a floppy disk drive these days. Worse yet, the software is antiquated, with an obsolete user interface and a worthless help system. I had to upload the data files to our shared data area so that the other students could download them and write them onto some other kind of drive (USB stick, for example). You MUST have the data saved to a rewritable drive - it won't accept a directory on your hard drive.

What a piece of junk, and at an outrageous price. Oh yes, did I mention that the software doesn't match the written instructions in the book?

5 out of 5 stars This book takes the "scare" out of wholecloth quilting!.......2006-02-22

I am a novice machine quilter and I have always loved wholecloth quilts. But I know that, unlike pieced-top quilts, the quilting provides ALL of the beauty of a wholecloth quilt. I didn't think I could do it until I purchased this book. I've seen Karen McTavish on television programs a couple of times so I was excited to buy her book and read all the details of this beautiful art form. The book is very well done, it even has a ribbon bookmark! The chapters are very detailed so you clearly understand how to get going on your particular project, whether it be wholecloth, trapunto, McTavishing, etc. There's an amazing number of full-page color photographs and close-ups so you can easily see stitching details. There are also lots of comments from Karen's students, who were also novices like me. You can see by their own quilts, which are pictured in the book, that they completed beautiful quilts on their first try! This book gave me the backbone I needed to try my own quilt - I'm in the marking process right now! Thankyou Karen McTavish! And thankyou, Amazon.com, for the price of this book. It was much cheaper from you than it would have been for me to buy it at my local fabric store!

5 out of 5 stars HAND QUILTERS, TOO, WILL VALUE THIS BOOK!.......2004-10-05

For years I have been hand quilting and last year designed and quilted my first wholecloth quilt. Since I had no previous intruction, it is fair to say that had I had Karen's book, life with my wholecloth venture would have been a lot easier. This book is in the top 3 in my library. It is not only beautifully bound and comes with an attached satin ribbon for page marking, but the information is invaluable and the pictures are remarkably gorgeous! (Perhaps because the quilts are the same.....gorgeous!) Packed with ideas, this book contains explicit directions for choosing fabric, stencils, designing, marking, shadow trapunto, and more. Particularly special is the fact that Karen not only instructs and displays her own quilts, but she spotlights the quilts of other quilters and allows them to give narration on the drawbacks and the values of different techniques and products, mistakes and victories! If one cannot be inspired by the beauty and simplicity of directions in this book, that person is not cut out to be a quilter! Although written with instructions for machine quilting, this book is invaluable for hand quilters, as well.

                            5 out of 5 stars Eye Candy.......2004-07-25

This book is absolutely full of eye candy. Reading it is just like being in class with Karen...she is so warm and bubbly! This is a must-have book for every quilter.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome, awesome book!.......2004-06-24

Karen McTavish is a brilliant quilter, and in this book she has assembled some of the most beautiful quilts you will ever see, some she has done and others by other talented quilters. She also has given instruction on how these magnificent works were created and how you can do them yourself. If you have any interest in trapunto (or even if you don't!), this book will convince you to try it yourself! The photography is wonderful; the commentary on each quilt is very informative. Karen's instruction is great. With these quilts, you can certainly see how the quilting can make a quilt sing! Each page is a whole new experience; you'll want to savor each quilt!

5 out of 5 stars Great New Bulb Book.......1999-12-04

                            Knippels, P. J. M. (1999). Growing Bulbs Indoors, A.A.Balkema, Rotterdam

Not very seldom I happen to go through the pages of growers' handbooks and be disappointed for some reason. Sometimes they are printed in a very handsome way, with a superb binding a beautiful photographs, but lack in completeness so that a question remains unanswered, or, perhaps worse, they are not clear and badly composed, so that frustration and disappointment are the end result. Another problem that the reader often encounters are related to cultivation instructions, that, if given, are often brief, or mainly relevant to climatic conditions in the country of the author or in habitat. This guide to the cultivation of bulb indoors does not show any of these disadvantages, to the benefit of the readers, who is plainly and satisfactorily guided step after step to the successful growing of these fascinating plants. I must also add that besides the usual limited number of popular and well known genera and species, like tulips and lily for example, a large selection of lesser known plants - the so called specialty bulbs - are covered in this richly illustrated book. P.J.M. Knippels who authored this book - edited and printed with extreme care and skill, in the quality tradition of Balkema books - is an experienced bulb and succulent plant grower, and has contributed to various specialist journals. His aim was to cover the often neglected 3information-niche2 of specific information about the cultivation of bulbous plants indoors, which probably is the information that most windowsill growers need. Only those plants that are available are covered, thus preventing the frustration of searching in vain a beautiful species that simply is not yet commercially grown and propagated. The book gives an introductory general view to bulbs, and their classification into families. The main growing areas - namely South Africa, South America and Chile - are discussed, and cultivation is very well discussed focusing on specific topics, like the periodic development of plants, the subdivision into summer and winter growers and evergreens, soil and fertilisation requirements, potting and plant depth, propagation, and how to prevent and fight against pests and diseases. The main part of the book is devoted to the detailed discussion of bulbs genera and species from Achimenes to Zephyranthes. Here perhaps lies the strongest point of this book. For each genus a general overview is given, with brief but sufficient habitat information, followed by the description of a selection of species. Cultivation is explained in detail, and a helpful timetable for each single genus summarizes the basic instructions, month after month, with symbols in three rows as follows. First row: growing, flowering and resting cycle of the genus. Second row: corresponding watering regime. Third row: cultivation difficulty, moment of flowering, planting depth. Appendix one is a three page glossary, based on the terms used in the text. Appendix two is a bibliography ordered according to the chapters of the book, so that, for instance, one can easily find titles relevant to the genus Boophone. Another useful appendix classifies the genera in terms of cultivation difficulty, while the subsequent one consists of a classification in terms of ornamental value. Genera are here subdivided into four categories of plants which derive their ornamental value from their leaves (e.g. Haemanthus), inflorescence or flowers (e.g. Brunsvigia), bulb, corm or tuber ( e.g. Bowiea), or fragrant parts (e.g.Crinum). The same genus can be found in one or more sections of course. At the end of the book some useful addresses are given, of growers, seed distributors and societies.

Technically, the book is hardbound, 175 x 250 mm (in-8°), has 101 pages, 66 colour photographs and 2 maps. Price 25 Euro.

In this beautiful compilation of contemporary essays, literary excerpts, ancient wisdom, poetry, ritual suggestion, contemplation, and images, creators Andrea Alban Gosline, Lisa Burnett Bossi, and Ame Mahler Beanland present an exploration of the journey into motherhood, a life-transforming adventure. 5 out of 5 stars Outstanding book for mothers and grandmothers. Makes a beautiful gift!.......2006-02-07

I have four daughters and this book has been on my bedside table since it was given to me by a friend. The book is not only beautiful, but the writing is heartwarming and interesting too. This is not your average "motherhood is wonderful - read my story" book. This collection is full of stories, peoms, photos, art, information about other cultures, and wisdom. I have loved it and given it many times as a gift to new mothers, old mothers, and many of my kid's teachers!

5 out of 5 stars wonderful resource for new moms and old moms alike.......2000-09-10

I wasn't a 'new mom' when i read this book, but found it helpful when doing research for a birthing ritual for a friend...it reveals so many views of impending motherhood from many different cultures...very informative and very touching. I wish i'd had it when i first found out i was pregnant!

                                  5 out of 5 stars Excellent book.......2000-05-09

This book is a rare gem. It compiles many famous writers' comments concerning pregnancy and birth. It portrays pregnancy and birth as beautiful and spiritual.

It also includes different spiritual perscpectives on the different phases of pregnancy and birth. It incudes Native American, Celtic, Polynesian,...poems that describe pregancy and birth.

I used this book to find a poem for my sons birth announcement.

5 out of 5 stars Inspiring, spiritual and wisdom.......1999-04-28

When I saw this book I knew that this was the perfect life-long gift for my daughter-in-law, Amy, who is well on her way to becoming a midwife. Along with her already inspirational and spiritual self, she will surely treasure this book, it is so Amy!! When I saw the Zuni prayers and poems I was even more excited as this is where she and my son are living!

"Grant Wood and Little Sister Nan draws Nan Wood Graham out of the larger tapestry of Wood's life and gives definition to her loyal support of her brother and her own achievements. She was a pathfinder whose contributions extend into areas that cannot be easily measured." writes Mary Bennett, Special Collections Coordinator for the State Historical Society of Iowa.

Julie Jensen McDonald pieces together the spirit of the Wood family during the demanding and daring times of the 1920s and 30s, capturing the substance that nurtured the talent, resourcefulness, and fierce loyalty demonstrated by Nan Wood Graham until her death in 1990 at the age of ninety-one years. Intriguing and enchanting details, garnered from the vast collection of Grant Wood memorabilia now held by the Davenport Art Museum, and other sources, profile the woman behind the face in American Gothic. Nan tells how she was wooed by her brother into posing for the painting by a promise that no one would recognize her. As the Gothic couple became one of the most celebrated images in art history, she speaks candidly of the joy as well as the vulnerability of "celebrity," including the innumerable parodies which depict a wide range of social conditions.

Joan Liffring-Zug Bourret, Penfield Press publisher, presents a pictorial documentary along with a"Passages in Time" of the Wood family, and rare insights from friends, acquaintances and admirers of Nan and her brother Grant Wood.

Essays by friends and close associates reveal the extent of Nan Wood Graham's devotion to the memory of her brother and to the places where they spent their early years. Personal letters and other commentaries provide a view of her fondness for time and place: early years in Anamosa, Iowa, growing up in Cedar Rapids, the generosity of friends in the Amana Colonies in times of great need, and the support of friends and mentors in the Iowa City and Davenport areas. Nan was often cast as a "fierce guardian of the truths of her brother's life." The Epilogue "Myths About Grant Wood," based on several years of research with Nan and other sources by the late John Zug, presents some truths to dispel many of the myths that often accompany notoriety.

This book adds a dimension to the woman in American Gothic. At age eighty three, Nan said the painting saved her life from being drab. Even though she didn't think the "painted" lady looked anything like her when it was first displayed, she had now decided that: "We look a lot alike. She's really become me."
