Not helpful at all. .......2006-04-11
Believe it or not, I got to re-read the Foreword and the Introduction to check whether the objective of the book is that of the book title. I must praise the publisher for being able to get the endorsement from Financial Times, The Independent, Futures Magazine and even a Sir in the back cover. However, I really doubt whether those critics (no personal name given indeed) had read the book at all.
As a pro mechanical (using TA with as little personal judgement as possible, vs the large judgement needed of, say, Elliot Wave Theories) trader/CFA/trading book lover I really dislike the book. I admit that I am prejudiced against Cycles/Elliot Wave Theories coz it's nearly impossible to tell what phase/stage of what cycle one is in and thus what high profit probability action one should take, except from hindsight which may already be hundreds of pips away. Pathetically, the key theme of the book, if present, is to provide academic background of various types of cycle theory. Psuedo science/psychology/economics, forgive me.
In case you really want to read something to sharpen your trading/investment edge, I strongly suggest you to give it a pass.
Awesome technical analysis book.......2003-07-23
Many technical analysts like to forget that they live in the real world. Technical analysis is based on the idea that the patterns drawn by stock prices can be used to forecast the financial markets. The field of behavioral finance essentially looks at this psychological give and take from an academic perspective, while technical analysis is largely a real life application. Tony Plummer brilliantly bridges this gap by showing how and why these patterns develop. He also discusses his own take on Elliott Wave Theory in a cogent and interesting manner. (Disclosure: This reviewer wrote "Applying Elliott Wave Theory Profitably" and Mr. Plummer wrote the foreword to the book.)

Hicks has a lot to offer in this book on activity-based costing, however it is not an easy to read. It very quickly dives into the weeds of detail. I think this is a very good second book to read on Activity Based Costing, because it goes into the details of how to actually implement a system. I would recommend that you first read Kaplan's "Cost and Effect," to get a good grounding in the fundamentals before reading this book.
Must Buy for ABC.......2001-11-14
This is a fantastic book on the subject of ABC. The costing model constructed in the book goes into just enough detail to give you a practical foundation for actual implementation, without getting lost in minutiae. At just the right times, the author also reminds you about the big picture and doesn't let you go away thinking correct decisions can all be boiled down to exercises in number-crunching. This is a must-buy, if you're serious about implementing ABC in your organization.

Activity-Based Costing: Making it Work for Small and Mid-Sized Companies, is a very well written and usefull handbook to design and implementation of Activity-Based Costing. It provides: a general description of key concepts of ABC, a practical guide to design of ABC system in the company, as well as description of any potential problems concerning implementation of ABC. I am working as a financial consultant (in Warsaw), and this book has helped me to help many companies that were loosing their cost-effectiveness. I think, that the author should have added some 100 pages to the book, and defined - described some aspects of Activity-Based Management - although that could have been too technical for most of the readers. Overall, I think that the book contains most of the knowledge needed for successful design & implementation of ABC. It really worked for me...

This is a model of clear and effective writing and teaching. Certainly one of the best accounting books I've ever read, it gives you the tools to start ABC analysis at once and never strays into jargon. The many examples of different company types and the simple to use and understand spreadsheet analysis keeps you focused on the theory of ABC rather than minute details of allocations. A book to keep on your desk.
Literally breaks ground!.......2000-02-26
I can not quite imagine a single decision made in any company that does not concern cost. And, when it is about accurate costing, I can not imagine another book on business that can better assist than this one.
First, the author defines the concept, states the reasons why Activity Based Costing should be implemented in every company, and then thoroughly shows you how to do it. Since the main step-by-step example in the book concentrates on a small manufacturing organization, those who are applying the concept to service organizations may have a harder time making the translation to their specific situations. Still, I don't think that will be much of an issue. The book is very well-written and must be digested by every professional with a passion for improving their company and seize a competitive advantage.

Not really what I was looking for but OK if that is what you like..........2007-07-16
Spends the first 30 pages going over the basics which most people would already know before buying this book. Then a few more pages talking about bead artists. For me, this was a waste of 30+ pages. For other people, it may not be which is why I rated it at least a 3. Once they do get into the designs, which I can only say simply that some are downright ugly, they are for more extravagant bead design wearers. Nothing I would wear out in public. Sorry, but this book wasn't that great for me...maybe someone else.

Great designs, beautiful pictures but the instructions are convoluted, and at times, redundant. I don't recommend it for beginners. I think some of the instructions got lost in translation.
Complicated instructions made easy.......2007-06-02
I picked up this book and made both a crystal heart and a crystal sphere. Both are beautiful. I have seen instructions for the heart before, but they were extremely complicated, and require someone who has made it before to sit with you and explain it to you. These instructions are much simpler and easier to understand.
I have recommended this book to several beaders - most were able to understand the instructions well enough to make the projects. A few were not. The graphics were a lot easier to understand than the written instructions. If someone relies on just the written instructions and cannot follow graphics, that person will have a harder time completing the pieces.
Yet another fine Japanese Beading book.......2007-01-12

Having been a beader for over 20 years, It's always wonderful to see how different people over the world approach beading. This book is a wonderful example of the uniqueness you will find in Japanese beading books.
The basics to know, is that all the patterns assume you are using two needles to pass the two ends of the thread through, and start at the star, end at the moon. If you need written out instructions, these books arn't for you. Once you take the time to figure out the diagrams, it will all "click" and you're ready to go.
This one has some beautiful crystal balls/pendants, and a nice version of the puffy crystal heart that is so popular. That pattern alone is worth the book.
Learning Experience.......2006-12-24
A first-time beader, I bought this book for a ring pattern it contained (similar to one on the front cover). I had bought a similar ring and wanted to reproduce it. Unfortunately, the book did not offer enough explanation for me. It recommended use of a number 3 thread --which I could not find, nor was anyone able to help me locate. This makes me wonder if different nomenclature is used to refer to various wires and threads in Japan vs. the United States. I first tried weaving several rings with a steel coated thread, but to no avail. Next, upon recommendation at a beading store, I tried Firewire, which worked better, but the rings did not hold their shape off the finger. Finally, I tried monofilament, which worked. --I think the book should have offered better information about which type of thread to use.
After successfully making six rings per the pattern, I deviated from the pattern to precisely emulate the ring that I bought - which had a better design (nicer segues from the front of the ring to the sides). The Love and Beads book design for the ring I made (which is on the book cover) looks nice from the front, but it has an awkward transition to its sides --rather like a large rectangle appended to another thin rectangle. The large rectangle corners look awkward so I eliminated them and used a slope instead. After some missteps, I was able to execute multiple rings that were quite pretty all around.
I have also tried multiple ways of knotting the thread/monofilament. I have tried various half hitches, and intend to research a bit more as I am not sure the half hitches work as well with monofilament as they do with string. I have also arrived at a technique to hide the leaders of the monofilament. (I bought a tool to melt thread, but the thread doesn't make as nice a ring as the monofilament. All the mucking about with various techniques resulted in my spending more time and money than planned.) I think that the book should offer explanation on how to handle knots as they are a vital part of each piece.
I feel that this book was rushed to production too quickly.

Well I got this book and just loved it I can't even say I have a favorite, I love them all. I am a sucker when it comes to love poetry, but these have to be some of my favorite. Had me smiling, sighing and believing that a love of high hopes does exist. Enjoyed it immensely!

A Fine Romance.......2001-12-01
All of these poems are clever, and some are sweet. Many are funny enough to make you laugh out loud. All together, they make up a fine little romance--but an imaginary one. If there is a book two--and one would hope there will be--maybe it will explore the rest of love--the part of the fairy tale that happens after the prince finally puts Cinderella's shoe on her foot. Still in all, a very nice read.

The Venerable Bead is a disappointment from an author of Richard Condon's stature. It is a loosely, disjointed, mishmash of a novel. Its central character, Leila Aluja, is a spy, singer/actress, fast food mogul, and PR whiz whose voracious appetite for sex outweighs her credibility. Potential readers save your money!

I ordered this book, received it today, and am returning it. I need a book that tells me more than just calories and fat. What about cholesterol, carbs, sodium, and sugar?? I assumed it would have those things listed also.
For $18.00 the information is WAY too limited.
Count on Health Counts.......2000-11-22
This is one of the best calorie count books I have ever used. It gives a comprehensive, but not overwhelming list of basic foods. More importantly, it lists homemade foods like meatloaf and macaroni salad so you don't have to go through the tedious process of adding calories of all the ingredients. The introduction gives basic information on how to go on a "no diet" eating plan, behavior modification, understanding fat, and goal setting. It has a food log that can be copied. I recommend this book to all my clients who need to lose weight.

Florence Thomas, a native of the Grassy Creek community of Ashe County, North Carolina, has been painting most of her life. She began her career in 1930 at the Moore Institute of Art, Science and Industry in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and, now in her mid-nineties, continues to paint the landscapes, still lifes, rural scenes, and farm animals that have brought her renown.
This book combines a biography of Thomas with reproductions of 124 of her paintings. Many are accompanied by remarks from the author on her intentions and technique. The text presented here, Francesco Bocchi's Le Bellezze della città di Fiorenza (The Beauties of the City of Florence), originally published in 1591, is one of the most remarkable of Renaissance writings on art and thus an especially valuable document of the culture within which and for which Renaissance art was made. It is not exactly the first guidebook, nor is it entirely an art guidebook in the modern sense of the word, but it marks an important step in the history of guidebook literature, perhaps the definitive step in the formation of the modern genre. It seeks to direct people's attention to outstanding objects, but also to offer instruction in how to look, what to think, and what to say. Scholars find it useful for purely archaeological reasons, as a record of numerous minor works of art and their locations, for instance, but its deepest source of interest is the lively discursive engagement with art to which it attests, and the passionate and eloquent way in which it makes the case that such engagement is a matter of the greatest urgency and importance. For this reason, the book has much to offer the non-specialist - anyone who visits Florence and gives any thought at all to what it means to look at art - and the desire to reach this kind of reader has been the real motivation behind the preparation of this translation. This translation is thus an invitation to enter into a dialogue with history; its deeper purpose is to stimulate modern visitors to Florence to objectify their own processes of looking, thinking, and speaking, and in so doing to develop a new degree of self-consciousness, a new, historical perspective on themselves.
