Whatever your goal for going to a spa or retreat (stress relief, meditation, thinner thighs), or your budget (from extravagant to Spartan), you'll find Healing Centers & Retreats full of ideas about and insight into destinations across the U.S. and Canada. Author Jenifer Miller's comprehensive collection runs the spectrum from the gestalt focus of the celebrity-studded Esalen Institute in Big Sur, California, to the hatha yoga and massage offered at the rustic Trillium Retreat Center on Vashon Island, Washington, to the plush Aveda Spa Retreat in Osceola, Wisconsin. Miller's visited all these centers (lucky duck!), so you can fully trust her evaluations. She describes each site by atmosphere, accommodations, rates, services, staff, and nearby attractions. Toll-free numbers and Web-site and e-mail addresses are also included when applicable. If you've always wished for such a getaway, this book will inspire you to make plans--or nothing will.
Miller also lists thorough descriptions of centers aimed at treating chronic ailments and disease (such as migraines or heart disease) through the use of biofeedback, Ayurvedic medicine, craniosacral therapy, nutritional treatments, Chinese medicine, or a customized combination thereof. And if you have never heard of craniosacral therapy, marma-point therapy, or holoenergetics, don't fret. Miller explains all in the fantastic glossary. There's also a thorough index with listings by healing center name, therapy used, and location.

The definitive guide to alternative healing centers........1998-11-21
It's been a long time coming but my search is finally over. I have been waiting for a book of this type to come along since I was first diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis. Finding contemporary medicine unable to treat the pains I suffer, I soon began seeking "alternative" medicine. I was shocked to find so little information available and it soon became a struggle to combine work and healing on my very frequent business travels. Now with Ms. Miller's book always tucked away at my desk I am sure to find a center to fill my needs. I find her guide to be accurate, concise and interesting. Her descriptive style entices me to try new places and new treatments. I wish this book had been written five years ago, it sure would have saved me a lot of time, trouble and headaches. I seriously recommend this book as a must for travel agencies with clientele looking for "alternative" vacations. They and their clients will not be disappointed.
So many ways to heal ourselves, so little time........1998-07-24
Thank Buddha for this most insightfull guide. Now I know where to go in order to get what I need. I feel much better just knowing that this is out there. Not only did it save me time in finding my perfect retreats it was also enjoyable to read. Ms. Miller's writting really held my interest, she is quite witty and amusing.
Sensational! Very informative........1998-07-20
Everything you wanted to know about holistic healing retreats, but didn't know where to look. This book was a wealth of information and helped with many of my unanswered questions.
Brief, informative well-written summaries of healing centers.......1998-07-17
This book really covered the gamut. I didn't realize there were any healing centers at all in the midwest! It gave the basic information I needed to plan my next healthy vacation. The write-ups had a sense of humor, also.

Book Description
Besides analyzing stock markets, the book considers a wide range of speculative markets for various items such as real estate, commodities , postage-stamps, antiquarian books. In particular, it highlights the following regularities:(i) During a speculative episode, the price of expensive items increases more than the price of less expensive items. This is referred to as price multiplier effect.(ii) Price peaks for stocks and most commodities on average follow a well-defined pattern that we call the sharp peak - flat through pattern; in contrast real estate price peaks follow a flat peak pattern.(iii) The stocks whose prices experience the strongest increase during a bull market, better resist during the subsequent bear market, an effect referred to as the resilience pattern. Such regularities pave the way for a mathematical theory of speculation. Being mainly empirical, the book is easy to read and does not require technical prerequisites in finance, economics or mathematics.

A prediction about the NASDAQ and other great stories.......2002-10-27
Published in January 2001 this book contains
(p. 176) a prediction about the course of the
NASDAQ that up to now (i.e. 27 October 2002) is
fairly well matched by the actual fall of the
NASDAQ Composite Index over the period 2000-2002.
Strangely enough, that prediction is not based
on a sophisticated stochastic model, but rather
on the observation of previous stock price
peaks such as the one in Paris in 1882, the crash
in Paris in early 1929, the crash in New York in late
1929 and several others.
You may think that such an approach based on the analysis
of recurrent events after all is not different from
what chartists are doing. There is however a big difference.
Here the approach works
because it compares events which
are brought about by similar phenomena.
An example may
help to better understand that point. Obviously, it
would be an hopeless task to base a forecast of tomorrow's
weather on the weather observed on previous days. However,
it does make sense in August
to forecast the average temperature
in New York City six months later for this prediction
is based on
a well-defined phenomenon, namely the rotation of the
Earth around the Sun. Similarly, the author shows that
behind stock price peaks there are
indeed specific recurrent phenomena; note that these
phenomena are not confined to the sole financial sphere
but are deeply rooted in the society as a whole.
The book is not only about stock markets but considers
all kinds of speculative fever whether affecting stocks,
real estate, postage stamps, collector books, sugar, silver
or diamonds. The section about real estate markets
is of particular interest at the present moment. It shows
that real estate price peaks ressemble stock price
peaks in the sense that they are almost symmetrical with
respect to the maximum, but they are smoother and
the shift from the up- to the down-going
phase is gradual instead
of being sudden and abrupt as was the case for the NASDAQ.
At the end of the book the author provides several useful
data sets such as real estate prices in Britain and
Paris, price of individual NYSE stocks during the crash of
1929 and so on.
There is an insightful story on almost every page of this
book. Highly recommended.

Wrong textbook for school........2007-09-30
The book in and of itself is great. It is not the correct book for school. It does not come with turbo tax and RIA checkpoint cd's. You will need each of these student versions too complete your assignments. Thompson publishing offers the full version for about the same amount of money.
Good condition por the price but...........2007-09-04
The delivery of the book was fast, the book was in perfect conditions, BUT it did not include the CD (turbo tax softare) so just pay attention when ordering a book to make sure it comes with all the necessary.
But overall it was a good purchase.
Confused.......2007-06-24
I have to purchase this book for class and am a bit reluctant after reading the reviews. It seems as though the last reviewer knows or works for Hoffman. I am paying over $150 for a book and I therefore want up-to-date, well organized and well written information.
Great Book!.......2006-06-12
This is an excellent book to learn taxation from. I used West taxation books before going on to a career at a big 4 accounting firm!
As far as the previous reviewer, who is obsessed with out of date charts and tax forms....she/he doesn't really understand taxation. Tax codes change year in and out. When these books are published they go with the latest possible information.
Besides, if your goal is simply to learn the basics of preparing taxes, why is it so necessary to have all the current years tax code info? Especially when the tax code doesn't "usually" change a whole lot from year to year.
Anyways, I have checked out other tax textbooks, and this is the one I'd recommend (being someone with SOME experience in this field)
Talk your teacher out of this book!!!.......2005-02-05
If your course requires this book, like mine did, go to the administrator of the school if you have to but talk them out of it.
The book frequently references other later chapters.
The book uses out of date tax forms, when the current years are available for free on irs.gov!
The book 'shortens' tables by grouping together years that are not really at the same rate, when the correct tables are available for free on irs.gov! It only warns you about this once in chapter 8, despite doing so all thru the book.
It spends way too much time on tax laws from prior years, and decades.
The quiz that the book provides for use with the chapters is bad!
It does not take into accout §167(k) which, admittedly only apply to 2003 and 2004, but those are the years given on the test.
It allocates on a 365 day basis for the leap year 2004 when the book (5 times!) told you to use 366 days if it is a leap year.
Some of the questions do not provide enough information to determine the correct answer.
There are also questions about items not mentioned in the book at all.
Not even the woman in class who DID taxes liked this book. It is difficult to imagine anyone it would be good for, unless maybe you needed to figure out how to depreciate a building you purchased in 1986.

So-so.......2006-05-27
This is the only book on this subject that I know of, so it's better than nothing. But it's frustrating throughout because the photos depict the author's hands better than the items she is holding. The verbal instructions are fairly good, but in this topic better pictures are a must. Maybe there will be a second edition with this problem corrected. Meanwhile, enjoy her pretty hands.
The perfect book for scaredy cats........2005-10-25
This was the first book I ever bought on polymer clay. I barely knew what polymer clay was - I looked in the book, thought "I can do that", bought some polymer clay and by that evening was making fabulous roses. This was the perfect introductory book - the books I have subsequently purchased and used would have scared me off. This is the basics, how to condition the clay, roll it into balls, make the shapes, assemble them, bake, and maybe paint a little. No color palettes, skinner blends, no fancy equipment - just clay, your hands, some wax paper, cornstarch, scissors, toothpicks and an oven. The instructions are incredibly detailed, the pictures perfect - Quast doesn't leave you to try to figure out a single thing. No matter how "uncrafty" or unartistic you are, the projects in this book will make you think you were born for the art of polymer clay. The book covers roses, dogwood blossoms, daisies, cherry blossoms, pansies, daffodils and irises, and ends by showing you some great jewelry and decorative household items you can make.
Must-have polymer book, flowers are beautiful & easy to make.......2000-05-02
This is a must-have book for anyone wanting to learn to make beautiful miniature flowers. It is great book for all levels, even those who have never worked with polymer clay.
At first glance I though it would be hard and very time consuming. I was wrong. I was amazed at how easy it really was. In less than two hours, I had a very impressive looking rose bud.
The author first covers materials and how to work with polymer clay. Included templates help you judge size & shape. Each part of every flower is then explained step by step. Numerous color photos help to guide you.
Flowers covered include roses, dogwood, daisies, cherry blossoms, pansies, daffodils, and irises. There are a few projects in the back showing you how to frame the flowers and make jewelry or ornaments out of them.
excellent resource for life-like flowers!.......1999-11-26
I have many books on polymer clay and this is one of my favorites! The techiques show here can be applied to any sculpture but what impressed me was how lifelike these projects look! And with such detailed explanations and illustrations it is an easy jump to use these techiques to create flowers of your own choice. I have made figures from polymer clay for 7 years now and most books are repetitive to me, I found this one re-energized my creative juices and gave me something new to make, I now make minature flowers to adorn some of my figures and have been pleased with the new dimension it adds.
A primer for making flowers with polymer clay.......1999-01-17
Step-by-step instructions on how to make seven different flowers using polymer clay. Detailed diagrams and tips (from tools and materials to color blending). Good book for beginner flower artists in the polymer clay medium. Provides list of sources and references.

Simple instructions.......2005-08-23
On impulse I had recently purchased several small cactii and never even considered how to care for them. This guide was a VERY easy read and I finished it in an hour. The chapters are layed out in an easy to follow sequence and written so that a novice such as myself could easily understand thier content and they had a nice touch of humor too. After reading it I felt this is a VERY basic guide ment to get you started toward caring for and enjoying these plants and I would recommend it to anyone interested in raising a cactus.
Stuck On Cactus.......2003-02-17
Informative, easy read, keeps humor in growing plants.
Book Description
The most popular question any pregnant woman is asked — aside from "When are you due?" — has got to be "Are you having a girl or a boy?" When author Andrea Buchanan was pregnant with her daughter, she was thrilled to be expecting a girl. Some people were happy for her; visions of flouncy pink dresses and promises of mother-daughter bonding were the predictable responses. Other people, though, were concerned: "Is your husband OK with that?" "You can try again." "Girls are tough." This mixed message led her to explore the issue herself, with help from her fellow writers and moms, many of whom had had the same experience. As she did in It's a Boy: Women Writers on Raising Sons, Buchanan and her contributors take on what it's really like to raise a child-in this case, a girl-from babyhood to adulthood.
It's a Girl, is a wide-ranging, often humorous, and honest collection of essays about the experience of the mother-daughter bond, taking on topics like "princess power" ("Shining, Shimmering, Splendid"), adding a girl to a brood of boys ("Confessions of a Tomboy Mom"), dealing with a daughter's eating disorder ("The Food Rules"), and mothering "hardcore mini-feminists" ("Tough Girls").
Customer Reviews:
My wife loves it!.......2007-01-15
I bought this book and the one called "It's a Boy", for my wife as X-mas gifts. She loves them both. I don't think she has finished them yet. But she said that I should read them.
not that great.......2007-01-07
As a feminist mother of a toddler daughter, I was disappointed with this book. Many of the essays did raise the feminist issues I wanted to read about (and for this reason I would give the book 4 stars) but the conclusions were cop outs (and for this reason I would give it 2 stars-- hence the rating of 3 stars- a blend). The pattern seemed to be: 1. raise the issue (playing with barbies, wanting to dress like princesses, or wanting to grow up to be a boy rather than a girl because boys have more power, etc.) 2. discuss how difficult it is to raise girls in light of the issue, then 3. decide that you need to let your daughter be "true to herself" even if means dressing all in pink and playing with barbies, so 4. give up / don't rock the boat / lay off those feminist ideals - your daughter and you are better off without the fight. All is neatly resolved within 5 pages of text - even faster than your average TV sitcom! I was hoping for something better than that. If you want to read really good essays on a similar issue (not on raising daughters per se but on deciding whether or not to have children) I would recommend the following instead: Maybe Baby, 28 writers talk about how they made the biggest decision of their lives, edited by salon.com. Fascinating and well-written essays from a myriad of different perspectives, written with honesty and depth.
Thoughtful moms.......2006-11-05
I found these essays deeply engaging and thought-provoking. In the course of reading the book, I realized how much more conflicted I am about my parenting decisions regarding my daughter than my son, how much more worried I am that she might not be a self-confident adult. The authors offer no answers, but their insights were meaningful to me, and I've recommended the book to at least a half-dozen friends of mine.
Subpar essays.......2006-10-18
If you think this book of essays is going to give you a new perspective on girls and raising a daughter, think again. Most of the ideas in this book are extremely trite. I was very disappointed.

Book Description
As much visionary as architect, Paolo Soleri, born in Turin in 1919, worked with Frank Lloyd Wright in the late 1940s and went on to develop his own organically expressive architecture. Since 1935, he has been involved almost exclusively with the design of alternative urban planning models. By 1970 he had designed thirty "Arcologies," his term for a series of high-density, fantastically unreal megastructures for up to six million inhabitants. This comprehensive monograph, the first on Soleri to be published in the United States, follows his career through a presentation of drawings, sketches, and built work. Since settling in Scottsdale, Arizona, in 1956, Soleri has made a lifelong commitment to research and experimentation in urban planning, establising the Cosanti Foundation.
Customer Reviews:
Good and bad.......2007-05-03
I really wanted to like this book more than I did, because Soleri's spaced out "arcologies" have always appealed to me with their somewhat plastic shapes - a product of their concrete construction methods - and somewhat appropriate appearance in certain settings - such as the Arizona desert. The book's many drawings and photos are welcome documentation of Soleri's life works and mostly unrealized dreams...
Alas, what rubbed me the wrong way was the whole text. Soleri, or at least the author of this retrospective, seems to have indulged in an excessive amount of self-consciously "profound", yet terribly vapid, even sophomoric theorizing, intellectualizing and/or rationalizing every aspect of the designs... It becomes, after a hundred pages or so, quite tedious.
This text seems a virtual caricature of academic BS and group-think, as often encountered in faculty lounges these days as in undergraduate dorms. It comes complete with largely irrelevant but obligatory digs at materialistic "American culture", the old "Star Wars" ABM defense scheme, etc. But what is sadly lacking is much coherent "form follows function" argument, so essential to truly ecological or organic design; instead, one gets the feeling that rationalization followed whim, with precious little regard for function whatsoever.
But hey, dude, maybe it's just me. No doubt the profundity here would have been more apparent had I recently scored some good hash...
Soleri: Architecture as Human Ecology.......2003-12-17
Paolo Soleri, an octogenarian architect from Turin, has spent the past half-century in the Arizona desert struggling (with unpaid help from willing disciples) to realize Arcosanti, a prototype settlement for 7000 people. Its ponderous concrete vaults and boxy volumes already resemble an unsightly ruin: the product of an ageing hippy with little to say to the present or future. For the rest, there is a mass of visionary drawings, impassioned polemics, and the ubiquitous sand-cast bells, which are sold alongside beads and hash pipes in "craft" stores. For Soleri's loyal fans, here is a massive, reverent, plentifully illustrated account by a starry-eyed admirer from Palermo. (Michael Webb is the book reviewer for LA Architect magazine.)
A very good, but flawed, monograph.......2003-08-02
Paolo Soleri has been an important urban theorist for 30 years and a creative architect for over 55 years. This monograph is a long-overdue and well deserved examination of his career and ideas. The text is thorough and interesting. The book's only failing is in it's photography. The author apparently took many of the Arcosanti photos...and it shows. Some of the images are not sharp; others are poorly lit; some are ill-chosen views. Approx. a dozen reveal the long shadow of the photographer! I could not find photos of the Glendale amphitheater or of the Scottsdale bridge models. The photo of the chapel at the Arizona Cancer Center was quite small. However, I am thankful that a book of this scope and ambition (though flawed) has documented the fascinating career of Paolo Soleri.
