Promises not kept..........2007-04-06
The Introduction states, "there is a dichotomous key to plant families included"... but don't believe it; and a good key would really be a helpful addition! You better know your plant families (as previously stated by an earlier reviewer) quite well before I would recommend this book. The map in this book indicates it's focused on Canada and North Dakota - although the book does indicate on a general map that "some" of the included plants range quite widely to the east past Lake Ontario, south into Missouri and Kansas, and west into Idaho and Utah. The text doesn't clarify which of the plants these are however.
Save some money and go with the 1984 Edition.......2006-07-29
I gave this book a 2 star because I feel they are trying to trick people into beliveing it is different book from the 1984 version.
I feel like the authors ripped us off when we bought this book. Basically it is the same as the 1984 edition, except they threw in some grasses and sedges. To help sell the book they changed the front cover to look different from the 19997 version, but all the wording and photos are the same. This threw us off as we purchased the book thinking it was different than our 1984 version!
The did add the grass/sedge section but other books deal much better with this section than they did.
I am not entirely pleased with many of the photos in this book, are out of focus or are just badly taken. What gives?
Stick with the 1984 version and save some money.
Very helpful, excellent illustrations & photos.......2000-06-13
I have used the earlier version of this book for a while and liked the fine photographs and concise, well chosen information on each page. The photos are interspersed with line drawings of critical floral features, a nice touch. I had only wished that the authors would produce a version with some of the common grasses and sedges. Voila, the 3rd edition includes a section on these ubiquitous but often overlooked plants that is up to the standard of the rest of the book. A note for novices: the book is organized by plant families, not flower color - this makes the book a bit harder to consult for occaisional use (there are simple keys to help you get to the right place) but getting to know the plant families will pay off in the long run. A very helpful book for the novice, advanced amateur, or botanist getting to know the area for the first time.

Book Description
Prologue: This is a travel narrative about Eritrea, a tiny sun-drenched country along the Red Sea, and Ethiopia, its giant southern neighbor and former colonial overlord. Among the oldest civilizations on earth, these two African countries can boast over 2,000 years of recorded history.
Eritrean and Ethiopian histories interlock, yet still maintain distinctive features. Eritrea's past revolves around foreign incursions and occupation, as well as ongoing trade and cultural mingling with Mediterranean and Arabian worlds. Ethiopian history speaks of imperial glory and dominance, and for great swaths of time isolation, as its Christian kingdoms held out in highland strongholds while Islamic and pagan militaries swirled around them.
Today, both countries, having just emerged from a thirty-year war, are dirt poor. Many citizens live on less than one dollar a day and both nations receive millions of dollars annually in food and development aid. But, with many well-trained professionals among local and exiled populations, rebounding economies, the rule of law, and rich histories and cultures to draw upon, Eritrea and Ethiopia represent the brightest hope for democracy and growth in Africa in the new millennium.

fun reading.......2004-07-03
If you can not go to these places yourself, it is fun to at least read about them. Loved it.
Either she should not visit or not have written a book!.......2002-08-20
Poor Julia,
Wined in Asmara and then left to her and friends devices
in Ethiopia!
Everything in Eritrea was wondeful but not so in Ethiopia.
Julia struggled during her stay in Ethiopia and denigrated
almost all of her travel sites - too many people, watery
tankwa, mud hut church, too much money, etc.
Strangely, of all the Amharic proverbs she puts to print,
she denigrates one tribe. One wonders how she managed to learn
enough Amharic to transliterate!
Lastly, one should tell Julia that Eritrea was never a colony
of Ethiopia.
A waste of her time to visit Ethiopia and a waste of her time
writing about her travels in Ethiopia while at the same time
waxing poetic about the "African experience".
What a great find! Excellent reading and good fun!.......2001-03-10
It is not a surprise to me that there are such mixed reviews of this book. It is obvious by reading the reviews that you either loved it or hated it. That said, I read it and thought it was fantastic! If you have an opened mind, and a sense of wonder - as does the author of this book - than it will be apparent that most of these negative reviews have an alterior motive. Why is that? Africa is a continent that is as diverse as these reviews! Coincidence? Please read this book with the intent that it was written: as a travel narrative. How often are we lucky enough to read the accounts of a woman travelling through these two contrasting countries? It is a perspective; and like any work of art it brings something different in everyone who views it. I'm happy to say that this book gave me an excellent insight into these countries in an easy to read and understand manner. Ms. Stewart's experiences seem wonderful, scary, mysterious...all description given to the countries as well as the continent. Bravo! It's a rare treasure and wonderful addition to my library!
This book deserves a rating of zero!.......2001-01-30
Don't waste your money on this book. The author of this book was unable to grasp anything beyond the trivial and superfluous thus completely missed the essence of the two countries. The author obviously doesn't bother to check facts as she repeats artificial histories created by liberation fronts as historic facts. Her rush to generalize is very troubling. Both countries are extremely diverse (Eritrea has more than 8 languages while Ethiopia has over than 30 languages.) The number of ethnic groups is much higher close to a total of 100, some living in both countries. Simple generalizations like "Eritreans" or "Ethiopians" for the most part are not valid. The author simply was unable to recognize the diversity of the cultures with in the two countries and the complex historical relationship that exists between the two countries.
For the most part the book is packed with ignorant babble and definitely a waste of time and money. I give it one star only because that is the lowest rating that I can give. This book deserves a rating of zero!
Read for Yourself.......2000-11-05
Surprised that a reader/reviewer writes off this fascinating book as a travel guide, which means he entirely misunderstands the book's genre (and misreads the subtitle of the book "through the eyes of a traveller"); it is a travel narrative not a travel guide, which in travel narrative style does not pretend to offer the reader with prices of hotels and lists of good restaurants, but rather gives the armchair and actual traveller a glimpse of the atmosphere of a country and its people as a snapshot in time. Stewart has accomplished this task well. The Ethiopia and Eritrea she visited several years ago, have already changed, and it is valuable that some of their pre-border-war character - albeit from one person's experiences - was captured. Yes, you should buy Bragg if you want a good travel GUIDE, but read this for insight and entertainment.

Customer Reviews:
I'm not fond of options....but this is a great book!.......2003-04-30
Mr.Caplan has put a great spin on option investing. If 90% of options expire worthless why buy them, just sell them. This is where this book shines. I have been involved with futures for 11 years. I have been a broker an investor ...
In each instance I have avoided options on futures. With Mr.Caplan's assessment on how volatitlity plays a key role to determining what options to sell and what price to sell them at. I was impressed at how he was able to take a complicated subject and make it easy to read.
His inclusion of articles from various other option traders was great as well.
If you write options ONLY!.......2003-01-26
This book was promoted heavily on different sites on the net, and I happened to be one of those who bought it!!!! To cut the story short, this book is not for amatuers! And not for ordinary regular option buyers (like me)!
This book covers only:
1. Futures trades (mainly).
2. Option writing and spreads.
But if you are not both of the above... forget this book!!! At the beginning of this book, you'll see how deeply the author discusses futures not stocks! And when you get to page number 47, you understand that this book is useless if you (like me) only buy options.
I am not saying this book is good or now, how am I to know?!! I can't even test his methodology... but in my situation this book is of no use!
Worth a Read.......2002-12-09
Though dated and focused on Futures, I found this book to be very helpful. The last 3rd of this book is a collection of articles written by other authors on the subject. Very useful!
Why not 5 stars? It is focused on Futures instead of Options in general.
This is only mildly annoying as most of the information is relevant to Options.
Again, very helpful book.

The New Option Secret.......2000-12-30
This book is excellent! I've implemented most of the techniques in this book, and have made a bundle of money! This is one recommendation that you won't need to consult your broker for...BUY! If you're learning options for the first time, make sure you have a firm grasp on how the futures market works first.
Just another piece of ...................1999-12-15

What We Don't Teach in College!.......2007-02-22
I taught Finance courses for over twenty-five years in colleges and universities. The focus was always on profit-oriented establishments. This is the first book I've read which places the focus squarely on the not-for-profit Treasurer job. The text contains excellent tips concerning: hiring the right kind of personality for money management (personal honesty and transparency are crucial), cashing contribution checks promptly, maintaining optimal relations with the membership, and other aspects unique to charity organizations. I heartily recommend the book to everyone involved in money management for charitable organizations and benevolent clubs.

Book Description
Thirty projects from 23 countries offer a worldwide representation of bags, from Asia and Africa to Europe and the Americas. From the fish-shaped Japanese felted bag to the Persian carpet–inspired handbag, each bag is a product of its cultural history. Each pattern begins with a brief history describing the source behind these contemporary interpretations of folk designs. Folk stories also accompany many projects. Included are designs for bags for work or play, and bags of all shapes, colors, textures, and sizes. Using this collection, knitters can create bags for children, for market, for everyday, or for a special evening event.
Customer Reviews:
So Clever.......2007-07-12
I bought the book because I loved the pictures of the finished bags. Now that I've started to work with the book, I've fallen in love with the author's craftsmanship. Not only are the bags unique, their construction shows a real understanding of the possibilities that stich choice creates. For example the Market Bag is a classic string bag, but unlike the string bags I've made from online patterns, this one uses unusual (but simple) stitch variations to provide maximum strangth and shaping. I can't wait to make more of the patterns!
Sweeeeet!.......2007-05-05
I convinced my sister to buy me this book for my birthday 4 months early so I could make her the fish purse for her birthday which was way before mine. Since then I've made 3 of the fish purses. They rock. Whenever we are carrying one people stop us to ask about it. My sister even had japanese tourists taking pictures of it (not her) in an airport. All of the projects are super cool and would probably get the same reaction. Now I just need to brush up on my fair isle skills so I can try knitting the Doll Bag.
Good bag mag!.......2007-01-10
I found the patterns easy to work and many easily adapted. Patterns were fairly well written. Also the inserted how to diagrams were extremely useful. Very well thought out book, easy to follow, and excellent patterns(in my point of view of course:).
Great, earthy designs.......2007-01-04
One of a kind designs with a lot of ethnic punch. If you like unique things this the book for you. I just loved almost all the designs and color combinations as well. Makes you want to collect purses!
Combines both artistic flair and solid knitting techniques!.......2005-11-18
As an experienced knitter, I am really enjoying knitting the exciting designs and exploring the interesting techniques in this book.

Mediocre..........2006-04-26
If you want to know how a couple of words of advice(that have been told to you by just about anybody, since you were a kid), can be blown into an entire book, then buy this book and get an experience that has nothing to do with the title...
TO SHARE.......2005-03-28
As my the other reviewers of this book, it was so great the impression after reading the book that my first wish was to buy a few books to send to my best friends. This is a different grade of rating, it is 6 stars, 5 stars for the book plus 1 star when you want yor loves ones to read it so badly that you buy it for them. Incredible book, suited to be in your night stand for a long time.
How to stay cool calm & collected.......2001-05-15
This book is great. This book has helped me alot, For work and my daily life. I have bought this book for 3 people. They all love it too. If you need help to deal with you job this is the book.
Wonderful book on making the right choices in your life........2001-02-02
This book is a very positive book on your choice for living regardless of your circumstance or situation. In this fast paced society, it's hard to take time to stop, slow down and get out of the rat race. Bottom line is this is a book that shows you exactly how to cope with everyday stress in life. It helps you to change and create a positive mindset even when your world is in turmoil.
Amazing!!!.......1999-09-10
Amazing is what I achieved in my professional and personal life after applying what I read in this book!
Being a principal at a big consulting firm, I'm responsible for some very challenging (to say the least...) projects. Stress is a constant in my professional life. At home, I've 2 stepdaughters, one with 15 years-old, an awful temper and a I-know-everything-and-I-do-what-I-want attitude. Stress, again, when (ever) I arrive home from work.
Until I read this book, my life had been pretty lousy: fights at home all the time, long hours (to compensate for the lack of concentration) at work, weekends too short to recover, a lot of illnesses (recurring colds, collitis, allergies, ...), overweight, you name it!
Now, I REALLY feel great: I lost a lot of weigth, my famliy life is better, I'm a lot more productive at work, ...
Get it, read it, use it, apply it!
Book Description
The widespread belief that people with autism spectrum conditions can neither plan ahead nor perceive illusions is challenged in this book by bringing the reader face-to-face with the extremely intricate and precise artwork of Peter Myers, an adult with Asperger Syndrome (AS). The multifaceted artwork shows the artist's complete control of form and color - talents that are not normally thought to be present in the AS mind. In an accompanying chapter the editors discuss the psychological interest and implication of Peter's work, demonstrating that it provides a valuable insight into the talents and strengths that make up the autistic mind.
Customer Reviews:
Celebrate the Autism Experience!.......2006-02-26
This book makes me think of Jimi Hendrix' 1967 classic, "Are You Experienced?" If not, this stellar work will certainly help you understand the autism/Aspeger's (a/A) experience.
First of all, it is past time to debunk that tired myth about how people with autism don't plan ahead and aren't organized. Not true. Let's just retire that one permanently. If you believe that, I have a nice bridge in San Francisco to sell you along with some oceanfront property in Iowa.
On the contrary, people on the a/A spectrum tend to be organized in thought and behavior to the point of rigidity. I know someone with Asperger's whose photographs are in the exact order in which they appear on the negatives; they are all chronologically organized; books, albums and CDs are alphabetized by artist and further alphabetized by title. How's THAT for organized thinking?
Many people on the a/A spectrum are quite adept at locating discrete objects and polygons in complex drawings; many people on the a/A spectrum excel at completing complex mazes; Tangrams and in "word finding," that is finding smaller words within a longer one.
The photographs do this one justice; the a/A experience is celebrated fully. Instead of reinforcing these foolish myths about autism which help no one and hurt all, this book opens the door to the a/A experience!
As John Lennon said in "Imagine," his 1971 classic, "I hope someday you'll join us and the world will live as one."
Delicious .......2006-01-29
This beautiful book is definitely one for the coffee table... large and glossy and full of delicious pictures. It combines the usual characteristics of an art book with the insight of autistic biography and the usual introduction to Asperger syndrome information. In addition to this though it has a very accessible guide to the psychological theories of autism. I identified with the art in it, having produced a similar style of pictures myself in the past (though not as good or as clever). This is an honest and thoughtful celebration of the autistic mind.
