Customer Reviews:
Excellent Reference.......2003-06-05
Although not the most interesting "read", this is a great reference book for gardening in South Florida. Straight forward without too much fluff. The section on pest control is a little heavy on identifying pests and little light on how to control them but the rest of the book is very clear on the basics. Probably not the best book for an advanced gardener but I highly recommend it for the novice like me who wants the nitty gritty on how to get going in Florida but doesn't care about a fancy looking book.
Very good reference for selecting bedding plants in Florida.......2001-09-22
I thought this was an excellent reference for selecting Florida bedding plants. I wanted a book that had lots of pictures of various plants and told me when and where to plant them. This book does that. It is limited on pest control, but has a good basic section on digging and prepping your bedding areas. It would be a great reference to take with you to the nursery when you are trying to decide which plants to purchase for your beds. It has more color photos for identification of bedding plants than most of the Florida gardening books out there.
Poor.......2000-05-18
I was so dispappointed in the presentation made in this book that I sent it back. The cover and even title give the impression that the book will include photgraphic and descriptive information regarding landscaping. What actually comes across is a very boring, poorly presented reference type of book that simply seems like an elaborate dictionary on various landscape terminology. The photographic connections were especially done poorly; all pictures relating to topics were simply united together in a large section at the back of the book. When a reference is made by an author regarding a specific subject, it is certainly best understood and appreciated by the reader when both are on the same page. It was also misleading in their title reference to Florida plants, shrubs, etc., that there would be direct inclusion of information of those subjects, but all that comes across is very general information relating to the words themselves. I have been working on my own Florida yard area now for over 5 years, enjoying what I have been learning by simple hands-on techniqe and questions to my neighbors. None of my own 26 personal plants were even directly mentioned in the book. Again, possibly some of the topics regarding pests or plant diseases might have been appreciated if the information would have been on the same pages as the related photographs--needing to turn clear to the the back of the book every time was a frustrating way to try and understand the connections.

Book Description
The book begins by reminiscing about the growth of American prosperity, but then quickly moves into exploring why the American Dream is now in decline. The book explains that our present recession may not be a typical recession from which we normally rebound, but may be more deeply rooted in government policies, albeit with good intentions, that have led our country's citizens into trouble.
Customer Reviews:
Can we still save the American Dream.......2005-01-29
What is the American Dream? Isn't it true that each defines the "Dream" differently based on your personal preferences? Yet with each of these many and varied definitions of the American Dream it is nevertheless uniformly true that they are based on, or more accurately written in stone upon, the bedrock of American principles, history, and generational inheritance. Without our fellow Americans who lived before us, and the American nation for which they believed and lived, there would be no American Dream for any of us to aspire.
In growing numbers Americans are feeling that Dream slipping away. An American heritage, once so safely assumed, seems to be lost to growing segments of our nation's citizens.
In "Dismantling the American Dream", Kenneth Buchdahl "connects the dots" of the forces that are eroding America's heritage and explains in great detail how they have created the perfect storm of American middle class destruction. Is it true that the American Dream is being dismantled before our eyes, and if not soon corrected, will lead to the dissolution of the great American middle-class? Kenneth Buchdahl answers with a resounding - Yes.
First and foremost it is good to see the recognition by Buchdahl of American "culture" as critical to the building of the American Dream. As Buchdahl writes "the development of a culture is grounded in a unique American personality and intricate system of values and beliefs..." that is responsible for America's "enviable situation." And it is that "enviable situation" that has contributed to creating the forces that are working rapidly, knowingly or not, to dismantle the American Dream.
"Dismantling the American Dream" chronicles the unintended impact of America's "pop culture" belief in globalization as a force for good in our economy and the failure of leadership to recognize that belief gone awry. America's political leaders' continued belief in free trade and give-away trade deals, in the face of the near deathblow of NAFTA to American manufacturing is but one of the delusions of globalization that Buchdahl lays bare.
The destruction of America's middle class engine of opportunity, America's job markets, is yet another "dot" that Buchdahl's book brings into sharp focus in viewing the dismantling of the American Dream for an increasing number of Americans. Not only does "Dismantling the American Dream" show the devastating impact on manufacturing jobs, but for once the threats to America's high tech/high skill jobs posed by misguided immigration laws and off-shore outsourcing are explained and connected to the same systematic forces that destroyed America's manufacturing base.
Of particular interest to those parents of America's future generations, but in reality a critical issue for us all, is the loss of America's intellectual property and methodology because of the rush to globalization. "The concern that I (Buchdahl) have is that we are not only exporting our physical manufacturing plants and service center offices, but we are also exporting the intellectual property and brainpower associated with all of these manufacturing and service businesses." Most ominous of all "When this critical knowledge is gone from the United States - it's gone for good...Ultimately, Asia (China), the Middle East and South America will have control over our manufacturing, technology and professional businesses simply because of the low wages and cost structure they enjoy today."
In other words, all of the hard work from generations of Americans to build a sophisticated and complex economy, the hard fought foundations of America's middle class successes, will be handed free to other nations because their citizens are viewed as being plentiful and cheap.
Sadly, while America loses its knowledge lead, Buchdahl explains in chapter 7, "Is Free Trade Helping or Hurting Nations," those gaining from that knowledge are not the world's poor, but the elites in those poorest nations...in many cases the very ones keeping their fellow citizens captive to poverty.
Kenneth Buchdahl's "Dismantling the American Dream" is the beginning of the long overdue examination of what the disciples of globalization have brought upon America. His book is the first serious effort to demonstrate the interactions of the forces at work dismantling the American Dream - Free Trade, Immigration, Unemployment, Poverty, Debt, Foreign Dependency, and Globalization. All forces with a clear "Made in America" stitching on their label, for it is America's own leaders that have brought this upon their entrustment, and who seem strangely to be incapable of making the necessary changes to reverse their treacherous course. - "So in the Libyan Fable it is told that once an eagle, stricken with a dart, said when he saw the fashion of the shaft, with our own feathers, not by others' hands are we now smitten."
I hope that Kenneth Buchdahl's excellent book will be a catalyst in awakening the public and America's leaders to the troubles upon us.

Customer Reviews:
OK Book but it's missing information.......2007-10-02
The book should just be titled Cabinet Doors. It's very incomplete on the drawer section. Also you'll need another book to fill in the gaps. I was disappointed because it should have covered more information.
Excellent book.......2007-07-12
This is an excellent resource for coming to understand how to create different types of doors and drawers. Easy to understand and excellent pictures make it easy to use.
A must Have .......2005-06-22
I have the original version of this book and found it to be one of the best books on the subject. After reading about this newer version I could not wait for it . It was worth the wait. The late Danny Proulx had a unmatched gift of explaing things and just making any one feel right at home. He seems to put himself in the readers spot that is the photos are great and everything explained to a tee. This version has a lot of great stuff in it. I would recommend any one interested in learning cabinetry to start reading any of his books on the subject. As a side note the author passed away suddenly in Nov. 04 he use to answer any question you would have in such a personal manner via email always building ones confidence , I truly miss him

Completely mind-opening.......2003-02-10
This book examines families for what they are supposed to be -- stable institutions for the raising of children. Of course, when there is abuse, whether it be chemical, physical, sexual, or emotional, a family cannot function properly. But when parents get divorced to find "personal fulfillment," they do so at the great expense of their children and ultimately society. The book argues for putting children's needs above parents' wants. It's a bit radical, because I believe most of us think of marriages in terms of strictly romance, and when that romance is gone, so is the marriage.
The book examines how the easy culture of divorce leads into other areas of life -- how we divorce friends, family, and jobs much quicker than we used to. But has this great pursuit of happiness, under the guise of divorce, really made us happier? It's taught us that when the going gets rough, it's time to say good-bye. The book examines what happens to children after divorce, and overwhelmingly the children are much worse emotionally and financially, no matter what we want to believe.
My husband of 20 years filed for divorce four months ago (we have four children, all under the age of 14). A friend to whom I will forever remain indebted "made" us both read this book. It simply changed our lives. We've quit being selfish and have resolved to stick by for better AND for worse. Life is far from perfect, but I am 100% certain that all our lives are better now than they would be during and after the turmoil of divorce. The book argues that when children are involved, a home is broken, and since home is a critical element in a child's self-esteem, there is no doubt that a child's self-esteem is affected as well.
Ms. Whitehead deserves a Pulitzer Prize for daring to say what needs to be said to protect our world's most precious commodity: our children. This should be an absolute must-read for anyone even contemplating divorce.
After the Divorce, who is really happy?.......2000-07-11
I selected this book for a graduate class book report on socio-economic issues that effect education. As an educator, I applaud Whitehead's frank discussion of the stakeholders in the divorce culture; not only the child, but society as well. One place I found evidence of this "culture" is the Texas Attorney General's web site for child support. We have state and federal programs to identify paternity and laws to make absentee parents accountable. As a divorcee, but without children, I was moved by Whitehead's discussion of the search for happiness. When their are children involved, whose happiness can we celebrate?
The truth hurts.......1999-10-26
One reader criticizes the book as being "moralistic". Darn straight, and it's about time, too. Superb book that challenges the reader to take a long, cold, hard look at the reality of divorce. Of course, those that feel threatened by such a challenge won't "like" it very much, but then again, such a book is not meant to be "liked". It's meant to educate.
This book makes clear all the real truths about divorce........1999-10-01
As a divorced man, I had thoughts and beliefs that my divorce was unnecessary and could have been avoided. This book verified all that I had been thinking about divorce. At the current rate, divorce has serious potential to destroy the very fabric that our society is built on. If you are considering a divorce or are getting divorced, read this book! It is in the best interest to save every marriage that we can.
Very different, but valuable, book on divorce.......1999-03-03
As an individual coping with a possible divorce, I didn't think a "sociology-oriented" book would help me. I want "person-oriented" books. But because of the raw intelligence of this woman, and the readability of this scholarly text, I was able to read it like a novel. I couldn't put it down. Whitehead provides a bird's-eye view of this whole situation - and she makes us think of (incredibly) how easy it is to overlook the children. Who do we think we're fooling. Divorce is very bad, in countless ways for children, despite our need to try and convince ourselves otherwise.
