I was excited about this book, but I have found that not much of it is relevant for the age of my little one (4 years old). They list a lot of good information for babies and a lot of good information for older kids, but the information for toddlers and preschoolers was lacking, in my opinion.

I bought this book to help me figure out how to make sure my infant was receiving all the nutrients necessary and also to help with the transition from just formula to eating regular meals. The book didn't help with information on the transition, but I still think the nutrition information is great.

It has good tips on how to keep feeding time from becoming a battle and good tips on how to start your children out on the right track to healthy eating.

The information on what NOT to feed your infant is also extreemly important and could prevent many choking incidents!

Bulgaria is a small Balkan country that gets little attention. On a visit in 1990, however, Linda Joyce Forristal fell in love with both the country and its food. In Bulgarian Rhapsody, she painstakingly presents Bulgarian cooking, placing emphasis on many of its full-flavored and colorful vegetarian dishes, though popular meat dishes are included as well.

The Bulgarian kitchen is heavily influenced by Mediterranean cooking, not a surprise since the neighboring Turks occupied it for 500 years. Greece is also a neighbor, along with Romania and Yugoslavia. Bulgarians favor the slow cooking of stews and soups. They use fresh vegetables, particularly tomatoes, sweet red peppers, eggplant, zucchini, and potatoes. Stuffed grape leaves, phyllo pies, and mousaka--the Bulgarian spelling--will be familiar. Forristal offers a meatless mousaka made with zucchini and several kinds of plakiya, stews that are vibrant with tomatoes and onions, similar to dishes you find in Greek restaurants. The gyuveches are baked stews that resemble their Romanian counterparts. The typical meatless one made with string beans, tomatoes, eggplant, cabbage, potatoes, carrots, red and green bell peppers, and zucchini, resembles a ratatouille. The one made with sausages and red peppers is much simpler.

If you enjoy discovering new dishes, tutmanik, a quickbread made with cheese, and Baked Peppers Stuffed with White Beans are alluring. The potato salad seasoned with oregano and paprika is also different from the usual. Do ignore one technique Forristal uses: peeling roasted peppers under running water washes away much of their flavor. Better to leave a few charred specks of skin than to do this. --Dana Jacobi

This book has great receipes for the everyday cook but I really love the tidbits of history and culture that are added in to get a sense of what Bulgaria's people and their food are like. I'm looking forward to making a Bulgarian meal.

Excellent cookbook!.......2005-09-26

After traveling to Bulgaria and seeing several different cookbooks, this one is perfect for the American cook. The author has done all the hardwork of translating the measurements and ingredients into english. She even includes some history of various recipes, which was a real treat to have. I have already tried several recipes and they have all turned out quite well and very tasty. I highly recommend this cookbook for anyone who is interested in the Bulgarian cuisine. The color pictures are also great!

Author Linda Forristal delivers far more than the expected in this treasure trove of Balkan cuisine and culture. The depth and breadth of her research shine through her entertaining tone, and her insights into the culture are inspired. I heartily agree with her that "one of the best windows into another culture is the one into its kitchen." So many cookbooks are full of pictures but examine and explain a culture only superficially. Few offer readers as much content as this one -- along with truly delicious dishes!
The recipes in BULGARIAN RHAPSODY are extremely user-friendly for the American market, and it's obvious that the author actually tested each recipe in her own kitchen and shopped for all the ingredients herself. Every recipe that I've tried from this book has turned out perfect.
Ignore the negative remarks of one of the reviewers below -- sometimes the majority is right. I can't help but wonder whether he has an agenda like a competing cookbook, or whether he smoked something other than salmon. I say BRAVO! for an American mom who adopted another culture and cuisine and tried to bring it back home to us!

Exciting book.......2003-08-26

I recently married someone from Bulgaria, and I knew nothing of the language or the cooking. After being invited to parties and dinners, I wanted to get some Bulgarian recipes.
This book is exciting! It has wonderful short pieces about Bulgarian culture and history as well as good recipes.
I was so excited by the book, I chose to make a special bread recipe (Sunflower Bread). The instructions were easy to follow, and there are great pictures that help.
I thoroughly surprised a whole party of Bulgarians who hadn't seen or tasted this bread since leaving home.
I look forward to reading more culture and history from the book as well as trying more recipes.

Beautiful afghans!.......2007-03-04

Echoing the sentiments of other readers, this book is full of beautiful afghans. I would knit at least half of the patterns in the book, which is saying something considering there are usually only one or two patterns in a book that I'll actually consider.

That being said, there ARE errors in this book. In addition to some basic spelling mistakes (you're vs. your - a pet peeve of mine) there are also errors in some of the patterns. However, I wouldn't let this stand in the way too much. If you are an experienced knitter you will quickly be able to find them (for instance, written directions in the first row of "Era" tell you to purl a certain number of stitches when, in fact, you should be knitting them) and quickly make corrections.

Overall, I recommend this book. The patterns are beautiful, and the errors, while annoying (I wonder about the editor) aren't bad enough to render a pattern completely un-knittable.

This book is a 1 in 100 find. It is great to find a knitting book with so many beautiful and unique patterns. The patterns require some knowledge of knitting techniques. Every quilt is unique and yet practical. Great afghans!

I love this book....it is full of rare knitted blankets. I have personally made blankets from this book and am bewildered at the comment made about errors. There are no errors in the patterns I have made blankets from. If you are planning (as I am) on giving a wedding or bridal shower gift this is a great choice to make.

I'm glad to have this book in my knitting library. Knitting an afghan/throw is a pretty big undertaking, generally made more tedious (in my opinion) by the fact that most afghan patterns out there are pretty non-descript (cables or stripes) and the yarns most of us permit ourselves to use in afghans are fairly ho-hum. The patterns in the book, however, represent a broad range of knitting techniques (including cables and stripes!). The authors have generally chosen better, "sweater-quality" yarns for their samples, and achieve some nice effects by combining strands of different yarns, something that I will keep in mind the next time I am picking yarns for a blanket. My 10-year-old son has decided he wants a blanket ("not another sweater"), so I gave him this book to look at; he flipped through and found one he liked immediately.

Good Advice - Irritating Tone.......2001-08-16

I tried to listen to this audio book and couldn't. While the advice in it is good - I've subscribed to the e-mail newsletter in the past - the arrogant tone of the reader is too much for me. Gladly David Gardner reminds you that the recommendations that he is giving you are simple and any Fool should be able to do them and become rich. But after being reminded of this time after time in the introduction you wonder what they REALLY mean by calling themselves Fools. You are talked down to and some start to wonder why would you submit yourself to such irritating drone.

My advice: Don't be a Fool, buy the book, skip the arrogance, and go straight to the financial advice.

I've read the other Fool books -- this one is much more basic and covers much more than just stock picking methods. If you believe that your financial advisor is a real expert, or you have credit card debt, or you don't know how to get the best price on a car, this is a must read. I knew all the basic stuff until I got to stocks which I'm far from an expert in. What I like about the Fool books (besides the humor and light tone which is always appreciated) is that they explain in plain English the meaning behind the numbers. Want to know what a dividend percentage yield really MEANS? You get the idea. Their basic Dow 4 strategy seems a bit oversimplified, but the point is that we should all realize that WE have all the information we need to make well-informed decisions for ourselves and do not need to rely on others. That idea alone (and a common theme running through the books) is worth the price of admission.

These two Foolish brothers are a Godsend. They are doing a great service for anyone interested in investing, or building a strong financial future in general. It seems that nowdays there are so many 'shisters' out there, so willing to take the last crumb of food from our lips, that it's frightening. From what I've seen on the Fools website, Dave and Tom are both Foolishly excited about us (jr. Fools) becoming financially educated. This book is waaay to full of puns and cynicism. If you can get through the funny business, however, you will find a gem of a book. Sometimes their humor is actually laughable. Advanced investors may find this treatise on investing somewhat simplified, but that's the way it should be. Why confuse a bunch of simple Fools! Good book with a happy ending!

Great Entertainment! But Average Investment Advice.......2000-05-11

Investment books are rarely entertaining. The Gardners and Andy Tobias are the exceptions. If you can't bear to read about investing and know nothing, you should give this book a try. You may find it to your taste.

The weakness of the book is a bias towards encouraging you to be out of debt and into common stocks, based on formulas and your professional knowledge. If the financial markets were at an average or below average price level, that would be all right. But the financial markets are at an all-time high, so future returns should be below par.

There is a historical ratio between household wealth in stocks and housing that favors buying housing right now rather than stocks. Few will be able to buy a home without a mortgage.

The most frequent path to major wealth in this country has been to found one's own business. Few can do this without incurring reasonable debt to finance receivables and other needed investments. The Gardners don't really address this investment opportunity.

The formula the Gardners propose for buying high yield stocks in the Dow has had to be revised every few years to be a good way to invest. This formula probably won't work well in the future either, because too many people follow the formula. Markets are bested by only a small percentage of all investors over time, and this rule is no exception going forward.

The advice about avoiding credit card debt, saving wherever you can, and so forth is quite good. You'd find it in any decent investment book.

If you decide you want to go into the stock market, I suggest you also read John Bogle's book, Common Sense About Mutual Funds, to round out the perspective that the Gardners provide here before buying stocks. Be sure to consider first how much you want to do with housing and starting your own business. Good luck with your investing.

Novice to "Fool".......2000-04-11

This book was extremely easy to read. It was concise, yet entertaining. I held a highlighter pen in my hand the entire time I was reading and ended up highlighting the entire book! All the information was useful and pertinent. An excellent book for novice investors and those who are getting over a "full-service brokerage" hangover.

Good for crash course on house buying.......2004-02-03

If you need a crash course on buying a house -- from family houses to condos to co-ops -- this well-produced book will help you aplenty. Featuring the "Now What?!" series' trademark Q&A format, each chapter deals with an aspect of the house-buying process. Each section starts with a general discussion and is followed by "Ask the Expert" with common questions and answers. The information is rather basic and leaves a lot to be learned in more depth, but if you want to know about how to buy real estate before the sun rises again, this is the book to get.

After this book I recommend the more comprehensive Complete Idiot's Guide to Buying and Selling a Home.
