After the Mud -By:Bill Shrout.......2003-02-03
After the Mud
By: Bill Shrout
This book was a great autobiography of a young man in the navy. He shares many experiences or the navy life in this book and gives many details. He includes many facts about the war and the people involved. He shares his feelings and lets the reader know of his previous life before he went into the navy. He relays in the book that he had a very sheltered life and many of the new things that he found while in his navy career. I enjoyed the book very much because or the way he tells you of his experiences throughout his young life. I also recommend this book to any age group and I hope everyone who reads it enjoys it like I have.
A simply, humbly written World War II memoir.......2001-05-05
I very much enjoyed this memoir. Bill Shrout vividly describes his experience as a young man leaving his home for the first time to fight in World War II. He is one of the youngest of remaining World War II veterans, for he joined the Navy towards the end of the war. After spending several months in training, he was sent to participate in the last great battle of the war - Okinawa.
What I enjoyed most was his description of what it was like to leave home for the first time. He had never been out of his small hometown in Indiana until joining the Navy. His reactions to the differences he finds in people and new places do not resonate with my generation. For instance, he had never had a milkshake until he joined the Navy because his hometown cafe didn't have a milkshake machine. He had never heard Southern accents, and he had never really seen black people. That people lived in such isolated surroundings caused me to think heavily about what he must have gone through as he left home.
I also enjoyed reading about how he retained his values throughout his Navy experience. While other sailors went off carousing, he remained true to his upbringing. Instead of visiting dingy bars and associating with loose women, he'd go to the USO to play ping-pong and eat doughnuts. Such strength to resist temptation was not always displayed amongst young men at the time. I commend him for it.
I was saddened to read about the personal loss he suffered when he was thousands of miles from home. I instantly began to feel grateful for my family and friends when I read this part.
All in all, this book will make you laugh, and it might make you cry. It is written in a simple, humble manner. I highly recommend it.

An ideal giftbook for any Arthurian enthusiast.......2002-01-14
A Dictionary Of King Arthur's Knights by author, editor, and Arthurian scholar Pamela Ryan is a compilation of names for people and places derived from both medieval and contemporary sources. There are 281 entries for King Arthur's knights, as well as 70 kings and feudal lords. All are arranged in alphabetical and dictionary-style format that makes looking up obscure names a snap. A Dictionary Of King Arthur's Knights is excellent and highly recommended addition to academic Arthurian Studies reference collections, and an ideal giftbook for any Arthurian enthusiast.

Every one should read this book........2007-04-23
Excellent report on how natural alternatives can overcome MRSA, and other dangerous bacteria and virus's. Many of the above are untreatable through traditional medicine. Dr. Cass's thoughts on vaccination is a must read for anyone with children or who may be contemplating a flu shot. The oreganol that he recomends cured a chronic disease in my son of an eight year duration. Anyone worried about West Nile Virus needs to read this book.
Commonsense, Rockbottom Medical Advice (Sound).......2007-01-28
This book is a very positive and helpful advice-giving service to all who read it. First of all, Dr. Cass Ingram IS a real doctor WHO CARES about US, the human beings, who need his expertise. If you feel any concern about yourself or your family, then this is the book that you must have. It is so refreshing and tells the TRUTH about what can be done to alleviate illnesses and even cure some otherwise fatal diseases. Best yet, the advice offered is TRUE and saves lives, yours and your loved ones, friends and acquaintances.
Now if you want to waste time and find things to "pick at", just keep on going to those who have given you "no results." Think about any so-called professional that has continued to have you come back to them, yet they have offered you no alleviation of pain, no suggested tests or alternatives that will help you. They could even send you to specialists that could give further in-depth medical advice. But, they have failed to do just that.
Whatever you do, remember that you must let commonsense guide you. You really can determine for yourself how to better your life. Yes, there are many facets to our lives. If you don't put your health first, then you will remain in the same sad, unhealthy status.
Once you have explored appropriate health decisions for yourself, then you can delve into all of the other wonderful things that LIFE has to offer.
I am another citizen who wishes to share any and all good things with my fellow inhabitants of the world. Remember this, "If God be for us, who can be against us?" - Romans 8:31. Peace and God Bless.
BOOK'S EXCELLENT; Don't waste time on Graziano's comment.......2005-06-03
The book is worth reading if you are concerned about curing many difficult viral, bacterial or fungal infections, some of which conventional medicine can't do anything about. Dr. Ingram's Oreganol has been so effective for my friends and me that I'd recommend just trying it out to see if it works.
Reviewer Phillip Graziano's review DON'T WASTE YOUR MONEY! below sounds like an anti-natural medicine lobbyist trying to bad mouth proven natural cures that work. His comment "Probably not much substance there" suggests that he has not even read the book. Yet he's so eager to rate the book poorly. Next, check out Graziano's other reviews -- he has given reviews only about alternative medicine books, and his standard rating is... you guessed it...one star. He seems to have something against Dr. Ingram, and I cannot believe that he has taken the trouble to read ALL of Ingram's books. Be careful of such reviews.
Was this review helpful to you?
DON'T WASTE YOUR MONEY!.......2005-04-05
If you purchase any of Dr. Cass Ingram's books, you are setting yourself up to verbal manipulation. I personally have met Dr. Ingram and found him to be pompus, arrogant and rude. He claims oregano cures everything yet he has deep dark circles under his eyes and is always grabbing his neck. He makes medical claims, yet has little research to back anything up and his books are repetitious and constantly plugg the North American Herb & Spice product line. Gee, I wonder if he has any interest in the company? I heard Dr. Ingram say that he was going to try and finish a book within a month. People spend hard-earned money on his books and claims to spend one month to write a book. Probably not much substance there.
you NEED this book!!!!.......2005-03-21
This book is a MUST for anyone interested in their health and what to do in the case of a rampant killer flu, which is immiment and planned. Dr. Ingram is truly a genius with a caring and merciful heart for people and their well-being. He lays down the protocol regarding many different scenarios, and also goes into the history of disease and how the American system, aka: allopathic drs, has POORLY dealt with disasters in the past, and not much has changed, especially since we have virtually NO broadspectrum antibiotics, and the last place you want to go when a pandemic breaks out is the hospital. He tells you the difference between treating grownups as opposed to treating small children, and how to stay healthy so that your immume system can fight for you, as it should be. I'm a nurse with 20 yrs experience, and hospitals are totally unprepared for any biological or major epidemic outbreak. The real fact being, they're not even preparing for it, though they also know it's coming. Most hospitals have only 1 or 2 isolation rooms, and they're doing nothing to change that. Oh they're building alright, but it's not to protect the public, but to bring in more money by adding food courts, and retail shopping inside of hospitals. Dr. Ingram is known for his research on the Oregano spice to kill all major germs, bacteria, etc. with wondrous results. You get the spice extracts through the North American Herb and Spice Co., and is well worth the money spent. The Oreganol liquid comes with a dropper, and is around $29.00, but this stuff will knock out any pathogen from within 20 min to a few days. He also goes into the 1918 flu pandemic that killed 40 million people worldwide, and how it was actually a hemorrhagic disease, attacking previously healthy people between the ages of 20 and 44, often people would just fall dead before any symptoms manifested. People now have much more suppressed immune systems due to pollution in the air, water, food with all the additives and preservatives and pesticides, lack of fresh food, eating too much processed food. You can hear dr.Ingram on www.thepowerhour.com every Thursday in their 3rd hour of broadcast, from 10:30-11:00 e.s.t., on shortwave it's 9.840, he takes calls from listeners during this time. Don't mess with your health, get the book and get informed and prepared!!!!!!!

Book Description
This is simply the best and most comprehensive guide to sake, written by a leading expert on the subject of the fermented Japanese rice beverage that has exploded in popularity in the United States. This exciting addition to our Companion series is a detailed guide that provides a fascinating look at the drink's cultural history, plus sections on the venerable craft of making sake, as well as an up-to-date, A-to-Z directory of more than 100 Japanese and American sake, with ratings, tasting notes, and full-color labels, and a complete listing of breweries. John Gaunter lives in Japan and publishes the news letter Sake World.
Customer Reviews:
A nice (but short) intro to the world of sake.......2001-08-12
This compact, concise book is a nice starting point if you're interested in delving into the multifaceted, complex world of sake. The author makes clear the many classifications and styles that this ancient Japanese beverage can have, in a way that's (hopefully) not too confusing to the novice. The directory of Japanese and American sakes he includes later in the book (listed by brewery, and including bottle label pictures) gives enough info to make a informed decision on which sake(s) you should try to find, depending on your preferences. He also provides the reader with plenty of references in the way of sake organization addresses and websites, etc. However, my biggest gripe with this slim volume is the lack of explanation of any of the Kanji (Japanese symbolic characters) which correspond to the classifications he describes earlier in the book. On a saké bottle label, not only are the brewery and sake names written in Kanji and Hiragana (a simpler Japanese alphabet), but the classification and style often are as well. Thus, knowledge of what the Kanji for "junmai" is, for example, is essential in many cases, and should've been included in this book.

Customer Reviews:
Rediculously written.......2004-08-16
As an active falconer that takes a great interest in the use of golden eagles in the sport, I was looking forward to reading "Bird of Jove". However, it is distractingly romanticized and events are ridiculously portrayed. This is not what real falconry is like. For example, the eagle falconers of the east, whom Sam meets first in the book, supposedly "starve" their birds for "weeks on end", keep them "creully" hooded, only releasing them from their "shackles" to kill savagely. C'mon! I had to put down the book in disgust.
If you would like an authentic idea of what eagle falconry is like, complete with excellent and engrossing story-telling, I would highly recommend Steve Bodio's book "Eagle Dreams: Searching for Legends in Wild Mongolia" or, for a more practical point of view, Martin Hollenshead's "Hawking with Golden Eagles".
One of the best personal accounts of a falconer........1999-07-03
I read this book some 25 years ago. Several times in fact. I am delighted to find that it is back in print! The trials and triumphs described are great lessons for experienced as well as novice falconers. A good object lesson for analyzing the personal preparations for handling such a large and powerful raptor.
FANTASTIC, a true work of love & pain to tame a true killer........1997-09-12
Sam Barnes deserves our utmost respect for the huge efforts he made to bring a Berkut Golden Eagle from behind the iron curtain to the county side of wales. Once he received her his "battles" had just begun. He had to tame a raptor that could easily kill him with her talons as she had killed wolves in the wild. Mr. Barnes discribes the sad treatment Atalanta recieved by her cruel captors, the tender affection she showed for an "adopted" owlet and the savagery which always lurked just below the surface of this beautiful creature.
If you love animals, raptors or a good story about a person who wanted to make a difference using will, love and patience do not miss this book.
At the end you will want it to go on and on.

We hear the voices of descendants of the Cherokees who lived in the region, and we learn about what summer camp was like for generations of youngsters. We meet a rich assortment of Appalachian characters and listen to veterans recount their war experiences. Illustrated with photographs and drawings,
Foxfire 12 is a rich trove of information and stories from a fascinating American culture.
Customer Reviews:
ONE OF THE BETTER FOXFIRE OFFERINGS........2007-06-06
To start, pay no attention to Publisher's Weekly when the whine about the repeativeness of the Foxfire books. The reviewer obviously has not read all the books. I own, read and use almost all of the Foxfire books. Actually, we owe both the Foxfire people and we certainly owe the characters of a gone generation. This work, Volume 12, is indeed like the others. That is a good thing! A wonderful history of how it was. In this day and age of having most needs meet and something for everyone on the Wal-mart shelf, we tend to forget just what it was like in our not too distant past. These books, the Foxfire books, brings to light skills, attitudes and a way of life that is all but forgotten. Do be warned though, as one reviewer has pointed out, these are not step by step "how to do it" books. But This is sort a good thing as the how to books out there are sort of a dime a dozen any more. When a people lose their history, they lose part of their soul. As the title of this work states, this addresses many of the old forgotten skills and there is so much more. The editors have done a wonderful job. They have made a very honest effort to replicate the dialect of those places and times and I feel that this is a big part of the charm of these books. I am old enough to have known many of the kinds of folks featured in these books, being only one generation past them, and have a great appreciation for what and how they did all the little things we take so for granted now. I might also suggest that you actually try some of the things mentioned in these volumes. It will give you even more of an appreciation for what they did, and hey, who knows, the skill you develope just might come in handy one of these days! This particular volume also includes some great interviews with the decendants of Cherokees who, after all, were the original owners of most of the land involved here. These interviews are priceless. Recommend this and the other Foxfire books highly.
The Entire Foxfire Series.......2007-02-01
I have the entire series, plus the AUNT AIRE "special". I consider them all treasures. The way theu came about and still do, the subjects covered and in such detail too. There are 12 plus the special extra and they are all equel in value to me. To my knowledge, they are the most readily available to the public and a source of old Appalachian ways describing them in great detail.
Book Description
Favorite old varieties of plants are a lot like old friends: easy-going, dependable, and enduring. Even with all of the dazzling new flowers that appear every spring in catalogs and garden centers, most gardeners still treasure those time-honored plants that have proven their worth over many years and earned an abiding place in our hearts.
Heirloom Flower Gardens celebrates more than 300 classic ornamental plants, and explores their uses in the landscape and the home. This charming and influential book is now back in print, and even better than before. It features more than 25 additional plant portraits, as well as expanded information on growing, landscaping, and preserving flowers and herbs for culinary and craft use. Other new sections provide information on creating period plantings and designing specialty or theme gardens.
Author JoAnn Gardner defines the word "heirloom" broadly, and includes a wide variety of plantsflowers, herbs, shrubs, and vinesthat were introduced to North America between 1600 and the 1950s. All of them have a simplicity and elegance that make them valuable additions to the home landscape. Most are also known for their hardiness and undemanding natures. Sections on growing under each plant portrait give specific instructions that will ensure success.
Even the common names of these plants sound poetic and evocative, from the airy foliage of love-in-a-mist (Nigella damascena) to the delightfully descriptive flower known as policeman's-helmet (Impatiens glandulifera). From foxglove to primrose, bee balm to sneezewort, these heirloom flowers offer a living link to our rich garden heritage, and they exhibit a grace and beauty that never grows old.
Book Description
When Hope Edelman finished writing Motherless Daughters, she thought she had said all she could about the long-term effects of early mother loss. Published in 1994, the book touched a nerve in women across the country and went on to become an enduring New York Times bestseller. Edelman, who was seventeen when her own mother died, told the collective story of mother loss with such candor, empathy, and informed wisdom that she quickly became a widely recognized expert on the topic.
But when she became a parent, she found herself revisiting her loss in ways she had never anticipated. Now the mother of two young girls, Edelman set out to learn how the loss of a mother to death or abandonment can affect the ways women raise their own children. From her exhaustive investigation, including a survey of more than one thousand women, comes Motherless Mothers, the enlightening and inspiring next step in the motherless journey.
Using her own story as a prism, Edelman reveals the unique anxieties and desires these mothers experience as they raise their children without the help of a living maternal guide. She examines their parenting choices, their unexpected triumphs, and their fears, from the initial decision to have a child, through pregnancy, the delivery room, and the child-rearing years. Identifying "Eight Themes of Motherless Mothers" that cut across all racial, ethnic, and socio-economic lines, Edelman illuminates how the experience of loss directly impacts the ways in which these women parent their own children.
Enriched by the voices of the mothers themselves, as well as filled with practical insight and advice from experienced professionals, this impeccably researched and luminously written book offers motherless mothers the guidance and support they want and need.
Customer Reviews:
A Must Have For ALL Motherless Mothers.......2007-05-21
This book is a must have for all Motherless Mothers. Motherless Mothers helped me realize that all the emotions I was having as a first mom where normal and I wasn't alone in my struggle. Thank you Hope!
The book your mom would give you..........2007-05-04
...if she could.
Edelman's book should be required reading for any motherless mother. Her insights are startling. This book heals.
Truer words were never written b/4.......2007-01-10
Hope Edelman has a gift for writing the exact words I've been thinking since my Mother died of Breast Cancer at age 47, when I was 17. Mz. Edelman brings out all your emotions, one page after another. Hubby just shakes his head whenever I become engrosed in her book... He does not understand the Mother/Daughter bond... Hope helps me to understand and relive the love and joy of that now-missing bond!!!!
Peeling Back Yet Another Piece .......2006-11-19
This is such a sensitive, individual subject. For me, losing my mother at a young age is one of the strongest factors that has shaped my life...it influenced me at such an impressionable age, that unraveling that event is a process that will forever be with me.
This book helps me understand some of the common themes that happen to motherless women when they become mothers. You think you've "grown up" without a mother, that you can handle it, you've survived your graduations, travels, weddings without her, so you think you can manage. Then BAMB, you get pregnant, and it releases this whole other world of questions, things you haven't thought of before....how did she give birth? was she sick during pregnancy? how did she handle those first few weeks? who was there to support her? what would she say to me if she were here now? how would she help me? You ask sisters, aunts, relatives about your mom during her childbearing years, trying to piece together the information, but ultimately you don't know, you can't know what her mothering life was like.
Edelman talks about self-sufficiency, that when a child loses her (or his, probably) mother she becomes dependent on only herself. There's a tendency to combat any surrogate mother, and that reoccurs when we give birth. Usually the grandmother would be there to hand down mothering wisdom.
This book is for a select audience, and even then I think it can be read only when a woman is ready, willing to address and unravel some of her own loss.
I needed this.......2006-07-09
I did not lose my mother from death but from a custody battle and have not seen her since I was 4 years old. Recently I gave birth to my own daughter and from the day I found out I was pregnant with her I could not believe how much grief, hurt, and confusion that went through me. It was almost as if all of those childhood pains from losing my mother surfaced the day my daughter was born. I felt cluless. I raised a son just fine but once I had my daughter I questioned so many things and longed for that motherly affection I so long ago lost. This book was a GOD SEND to me because I felt like I was the only one to feel this way. It helped me to understand these feelings of confusion were normal. Thank you for this book Hope!

Book Description
William Robinson used a pseudonym in 1836 to publish his now-famous memoir, knowing his all-too-realistic description of life on the lower decks would create a scandal. But he hoped it also would provoke changes in the practices of impressment and unfair punishment of sailors. Writing from the point of view of the ordinary Jack Tar in Nelson's Navy, he described the press gangs, floggings, keel-haulings, poor food, long watches, and bloody battles that were routine, as well as the relief found in drinking grog. Such vivid accounts of forecastle adventures were rare in the literature of the day--and remain rare today.
Robinson himself fought at Trafalgar in 1805 and took part in many other events in the long war against Napoleon. His revelations about the brutal conditions of everyday shipboard life in the classical Age of Sail--an era that nevertheless managed to produce some of England's finest seamen and most famous victories--provide a valuable record of the seaman's experience. This edition is illustrated with the work of caricaturist George Cruikshank, a contemporary of Robinson's well known for his sketches of nautical life, and an introduction by the noted Nelson scholar Oliver Warner.
