The best Japan travel book!.......2006-11-23

You are lucky if you can get your hands on a copy of this book. I've been to Japan many times with my daughter who lived there for three years and speaks fluent Japanese. For us, it is a breeze to travel there. For most people who are not Japanese or don't speak or read it it is very difficult to see anything off the beaten track. It's even difficult on the beaten track. With this book I could travel by myself throughout the Tohoku region with minimum difficulty. My copy is the first edition, 3rd printing from the early 80's. It's old, but it's still accurate for most things. In easy to read detail it gives driving directions and train and bus routes. I would not recommend driving in Japan under any circumstances until you've been there awhile. You have to contend with driving on the other side of the road (if you are American) and signs that are usually not in English once you get away from the large cities. Trains and buses are the much easier way to go. You will see much more.

Most Japan travel books cover only the most well known travel sites. There are so many interesting places to see in Japan that aren't in those books. This book covers Tohoku only, but there are many, many places that you won't find in any book written in English. Most travel books don't cover much in Tohoku at all, but concentrate on the bigger cities and the most famous cities like Tokyo, Kyoto and Hiroshima. Those are wonderful places to visit, but if you want to see more of the real Japan you should try something different after you have been to the places the other books cover.

A "must have" travelers companion for northern Honshu!.......1999-03-20

My wife and I were stationed at Misawa Air Base, Japan in the early 80s and this book made our travels fantastic! It not only pointed out "must see" places, shrines, castles, etc., it gave you directions such as "turn right just before the railroad tracks at the school...." to help you get there. In addition, the back of the book has a section which translates road signs to help you get where you are going. The book not only gets you there but gives great details as to what you are looking at, its significance, etc. We once stopped at a (very hard to find) shrine which the book said had a museum focusing on 18th/19th century Japanese sailors inside. We didn't see a museum but found the priest and in our "best" sign language asked him where the museum was. He was shocked (and delighted) we even knew about it. He then opened the "private collection" and gave us a two hour private tour. "What an experience!" We have dozens of photo albums and experiences like this from our 3 years in Tohoku, and even people who lived at Misawa AB used to ask how in the world we found such neat "off the beaten path" places to see. We'd show them the book. Our copy, which is "extremely" well worn and has earned a special place in our library and I recommend it to anyone who travels throughout Northern Japan. If you get stationed there, congratulations, now BUY THE BOOK!

The Eyre's make a great point that parents undo the very heart of what responsibility means when they remind their children to do their responsibilities. Their solution is pure gold! They give ideas on how to restructure your approach. Soon your children will be scrambling to be responsible for their own chores and other responsibilities. It took our family about a month to readjust from "parent reminders" to "self reminding." We've been using this system for 2 years now and our children continue to be self motivated in getting ready for school on time, reporting on chore completion, and excelling in their studies. Their easy-to-tailor-to-your-family system gives another benefit. If you are working together as a family to master perfect love (rather than perfectionism), the natural consequence style this book offers allows for greater parent-child communication, understanding, self-improvement that is guided by the parent with the goals and solutions chosen by the child, and the opportunity to practice win/win negotiation skills. I saw the Eyres on "Oprah" when they were promoting this book & it just made sense. I'm the oldest of nine girls in a house that ran fairly smoothly. I could see that many of the things that had worked for us, they had down but had gone even further to refine the idea. They've helped me realize that I can't wait for my 5-yr-old to get older before I start teaching her these important things unless I want to miss out on prime teaching time with her. They also never sound like they know it all & we must do just as they say. It's been trial & error for them...they just got through more of it than your average sized family. :-)

Great resource that summarizes the values we all need.......1999-07-02

The authors have selected 12 core values that all children need to learn in order to mature into responsible and moral adults. This book suggests that the family select one value a month to discuss and practice thus covering all values after one calendar year. While I have never followed the monthly routine, this book has helped me present different values to my children in ways that they can understand.

For educators who are interested in incorporating values education into their school - this book could be a valuable resource.

I highly recommend it to all parents and others who work with children.

I have read all of the Teach Your Children...series. The authors approcah is easy to understand and to follow and implement in your own family. I'm glad my sister reccomended these books to me!

Excellent Reading.......2007-08-27

This book wasn't what I expected it to be. I was slightly disappointed with it when I opened it and saw the diary style, small writing, I thought this is going to be really boring.
How wrong I was, I took it on vacation and started reading it and it was very good, I found myself reading it at every opportunity.
I am not a fan of Piers morgan but his Diary on life as a major Newspaper editor was excellent. It opened yours eyes on how Newspapers get their stories and headlines.
It was a book well done.
One little bit of advice though it is based mainly around British politics and celebrities

Great photographic record of a glitzy moment in time.......2007-07-12

The moment in time being, of course, the party-all-night culture of Manhattan in the 1980's. Patrick McMullen chronicles these hedonistic and frenetic doings admirably in hundreds of crisp black-and-white photos in this huge book. There are a heck of a lot of celebrities in here, and a lot of ordinary people as well, dancing and drinking the night away. Andy Warhol was still alive at the time (did he pass on in 1987 or 1991? I can't remember), so a goodly number of the photos in this book focus, no pun intended, on him and his circle. That's why there are so many photos of zaftig blonde "Queen of the Night" Dianne Brill, who tells her own story in _Boobs, Boys and High Heels_ (out of print but available through Amazon Marketplace). There are also a lot of pictures of people whom the non-New Yorker may not recognize offhand, but who were important players on the city's social scene in the 1980's. Fashion mavens, in particular, will value this book for its excellent views of what the well-dressed partygoer and disco patron wore during the decade.

By the way, I have to wonder whether "A Reader" was reading the same book the rest of us were when he characterized it as "oversized pap", which it certainly is not. (I notice, by the way, that a lot of the really bad reviews are left by these anonymous "A Reader"'s. Why are they afraid to sign their names?)

Just got this book and loved it. Patrick really documents the "scene" in NYC in the 80s. I would have loved to have been around during this decade but I guess this is the closest I'll get. A great gift or personal book for anyone interested in culture.

This book is a great trip through the 80's and really is an insight into the world that was so much fun in NYC. Thankfully, it's too heavy for anyone to steal it from my coffee table but it does provide quite fun enterntainment! The photos are really great and the quotes are so cool -- I can't wait for McMullan's so9o's to come out!

This "Diary" is actually a collection of scribblings found on Freud's desk after he died. The Diary itself sticks to the last ten years of Freud's life and consists of single phrases: "Doctor's Appointment"; "Editorial Committee Meeting," etc. which are then explained at length.

Given that, this is an interesting compilation sprinkled with intriguing images and photographs. I'd rate it a 5 if it weren't for the poor advertising.

The diary of Sigmund Freud is a great opportunity to learn more about the everyday life of the father of psychoanalysis written by his own hands. You get to know the man behind the genius. In fact, day after day Freud described his activities, big and little challenges and above all his terrible disease that affected him during his last years. It is a book packed with historical pictures that you are not likely to find anywhere else. I think people who like biographies can really appreciate this work as Freud took notes of what seemed important and very shortly described the events. Thanks to the Freud Museums curators each little note is well explained to give readers the opportunity to build up Freud's everyday life during his last ten year of his life. The book is also a rich source of historical information.
