4 out of 5 stars Good & pocket sized book.......2007-06-16

This is actually a good book, although it appears the 2003-2004 edition was the last year they did this "yearly" book. Each place has reviews (no pictures) and there's an image index that lets you know how pricey and teh subject matter of each location.

If you're looking for a mature and fun adult tour of New York City this is the book for you, if you're looking for the seedier aspect of New York then you won't find it here.

    4 out of 5 stars NY's a Sexy Place!.......2004-02-24

A great little guide to help you locate just the kind of fun you're looking for exactly when you want it. I give this guide to most of my friends that visit NY and what to see how the wild side lives. I let them them choose how tame or wild they want NY to be! : ) It's the perfect guide for any mood you're in. Always the making of a memorable, usually laughable, night!

Could it be? Is it possible that day trading--the hottest thing to hit the market since analysts started forecasting stock movements by the heft of Alan Greenspan's briefcase--is simply a bait-and-switch that promises unlimited riches but delivers only aggravation? Joey Anuff, cofounder of the Suck.com humor Web site, certainly thinks so. With a literary assist from Wired magazine's Gary Wolf, he takes us into the belly of the beast in Dumb Money. And his rollercoaster first-person account of the day trading life graphically shows that while this highly romanticized world may be consistently exciting and occasionally quite profitable, it sure ain't pretty.

Set to the tempo of a trading day that begins each dawn in Anuff's San Francisco apartment, the book chronicles an existence fueled by CNBC and Starbucks and has little room for anything else. Envious of the vast riches that everyone else seems to be accumulating, Anuff jumps into the abyss full-bore to the detriment of his personal life, his regular job, and even his sanity. Through witty writing and self-effacing irony, he shows why he stayed glued to his keyboard each day until the closing bell, repeatedly risking tens of thousands on stocks he couldn't even recall a few weeks later. Along the way, he introduces us to several top players in the game, and explains how everything from discount brokerages to Web message boards affect the action. A true cautionary tale, it's recommended for anyone who has ever read about a trader's million-dollar day and seriously wondered, "Why not me?" --Howard Rothman

    Book Description

As you read this, five million Americans are day-trading. Not since gold was discovered in California have more people dropped out of their old lives and come running for the promise of a big score. For a time, Joey Anuff was among them. He has emerged-enriched, enlightened, and exhausted-to share his story.

In a marriage of Anuff's own experiences with the brilliant investigative work of his Wired and Suck colleague Gary Wolf, Dumb Money explores and explains the world of day-trading as has never been done before. No strategy is too crackpot to try, no news break too dubious to play off, no so-called guru too shady, no online chat room too pathetic. Using the rhythms of a day trader's typical day as its frame, Dumb Money is a dispatch from the front lines of the stock-market revolution, a brutally Darwinian battleground on which some become wildly rich and more become part of the body count. It is essential reading for online investors, off-line investors, voyeurs, concerned citizens, and adrenaline freaks alike.

    Download Description

As you read this, millions of people across the land are day trading, moving quickly in and out of stock positions through on-line accounts, sometimes buying and selling in a matter of minutes, often making over a hundred trades in a day, feverishly sniffing the winds for opportunities for a fast buck. For every day trader that goes bankrupt, two take his place. Not since the California gold rush have so many Americans dropped their day jobs and come running. Our man Joey Anuff, the guiding spirit behind Suck. corn, "the Spy magazine (when it used to be good) of the Digital Age, " is among them. Anuff increased his portfolio 200% last year, along the way tinkering with every day-trading investment strategy out there, drawing on every imaginable data source, trolling every single likely investing on-line chat room, and checking out just about every so-called guru in this wild and exploding universe. Now he fesses up, with the help of the only man capable of pulling him away from his trading to write this book, his friend and fellow Wired and Suck veteran (and RH author) Gary Wolf. Using the rhythms of the day trader's day as a base line, Anuff and Wolf offer up a fast-moving, explicit, 1st-person expose of day-trading realities, including the ruinous pitfalls that await the unwary. A fascinating narrative joy ride through the most significant new investing phenomenon of our time and an invaluable resource for any individual investor. The book will include a glossary of day-trading jargon.

4 out of 5 stars Entertaining, if not informative.......2002-05-27

I found this book to be a quick and entertaining read. If you're looking for a book on how a trader makes his picks, this is not the book. However, it does give a clear view of the stress of the day trader; the ups and the downs, which for the most part seems to be a life of worry. For those daytraders out there, not many tips but you'll know what he's talking about and experience a good laugh along the way.

3 out of 5 stars Good Book for the bigginers of day trading.......2002-01-12

The book contains interesting information about the stock market development. It is interesting, easy and sometimes funny to read it. I like the sections about trading as I am a new trader and I want to know how other people trade and their success.

This book does not contain any practical information, advise but it connects and talks about people whom I have heard about before.

After the reading of the book I understood that the author was not a good trained day trader. He also had success in a few trades and after he lost his money he was looking for the way to make them. I think this book was his descision to make some money and start day trading again.

2 out of 5 stars Liteweight Fluff from a liteweight mind.......2001-10-04

This book's sole purpose was to be the first on the block about the life of a day trader and it really shows. There are about 10 pages of useful stuff and the rest is banal filler, exposing the slacker mentality of the author. Example: at one point the highlite of his day was a trip to Starbucks.
If you are looking for tips on day trading forget it. The author gives generic info and covers outdated methods (SOES spread trading) He made all his money on virtually one trade of one stock and spends the rest of the book trying to duplicate it.
Wired's 15 minutes of fame are long up and so are this clown's. Time for this one-hit wonder (or blunder) to get a real job.

If you want to read this book, get it used or better yet check it out from the library. It is thin and can be read in one sitting

5 out of 5 stars Entertaining, informative, scrumptious.......2001-03-02

This is a quick read, as breezy as the sports page and as agreeable as a six-figure income before you're thirty. But beware. Underneath the adrenaline rush lie material angst and emotional depression. After reading this you may take a certain delight in writing yet another line of boring code or in picking up that phone and punching in the numbers as you puff yourself up for a cheery hello. You might even walk outside and admire the scenery, realizing that perhaps day trading is its own peculiar hell, the kind of thing the gods do to you when they grant your dearest wish.

On the other hand this book might psyche you up to take the plunge or recharge you enough to catch the open tomorrow morning. If so--if you hear the siren call of the market or feel that passion for action--then this is a good book to read for what you can learn about how some day traders buy and sell. (They will be part of your competition.) There's a lot of insight here into what works and what doesn't work, or I should caution, what worked and what didn't work. It's clear that what day traders like Anuff do is follow the trend while working very hard to find a way to (glory be!) ANTICIPATE the trend. The incidental information on the significance of spreads, of just who you are playing against (add brokers and market makers to day traders) and how this passion may take over your life is perhaps the best of the book. Noteworthy is Anuff's description of the three-monitor layout and the software he used and the sites he visited while ensconced in his Frisco apartment glued to CNBC, whistling their theme song.

Essentially "dumb money" is nonprofessional money. What Anuff learned in his experience as a day trader is that the market makers and the brokers and other professionals still have a big advantage. Although the playing field has leveled considerably in recent years, you still have the spread against you and your information is stale and second hand. Anuff says nothing about insider trading, but it doesn't take a genius to realize that it happens all the time. Note, if you will, prior to an earnings announcement, which direction the stock in question takes. Nine times out of ten the direction will anticipate the tenor of the announcement. If it sells off, you can be nearly certain that the news is not so good. If it inches up, you can bet that a rosy report will follow. How can this be? Could it be that insider knowledge leaked out ahead of time to selected individuals who traded accordingly, and that such action was in turn noted by market makers, brokers and others close to the scene who took advantage? Yes, it's against the law, but so is speeding on the freeway. Also not mentioned is the action ahead of a broker downgrade or upgrade. By the time you hear about it, the stock has already popped or taken a haircut. As poker players say, you're chasing.

Anyway, Anuff, founder of Suck.com and Gary Wolf take us on a blitz tour of the day trader's world. They throw in a little painless history, share experiences, drop some Wall Street and Internet biz whiz names, spin some anecdotes, wax nostalgic and generally just lay wide open the human psyche of greed and fear so palpably that once or twice I had the urge to tell Anuff to go take a shower. They do this so well and with so much color and verve delivered in an apt tone of irreverence, that I promise you'll take delight.

Some of the fun comes from chat room adventures at Silicon.com, Yahoo, etc., as the ragers tout, diss, pump and dump, and otherwise scream their lungs out trying to mislead a gullible public. You'll learn why day traders always close out their positions before the bell (rather than climb walls). You'll learn what you can do about the gap in the morning, which is close to nothing. (You can try bleary-eyed to rescue your position in the before-market session, but most likely it's too late.) You'll learn why after a breaking news story the market sometimes goes one way, hesitates and then goes the other. Anuff and Wolf explain on page 152 that some quick-fingered traders, anxious to beat the pack, initially misread the news. You'll learn why technical analysis, with its "resistence" and "support" levels, works, despite the fact that any fundamentalist can prove it's a voodoo science. The authors explain it on pages 147-149 as a "self-fulfilling prophecy" that people believe. They don't explain why fundamental analysis seldom works, even though it's real science, but I will. One, a fundamental analysis of a company's true value vis-a-vis the marketplace is usually too complex to get right; and two, a significant percentage of buyers and sellers trade on emotion, ensuring that psychological factors predominate in the short run. Yes, Virginia, in the long run fundamentals will out. But you know what John Maynard Keynes said about the long run.

Here's my favorite bit of colorful writing from page 154. The authors are talking about a stock flying up in the after hours: "All the previous day's losses had been erased, and tomorrow the shorts--if there were any left--would be squeezed until their little piggy eyes popped out of their heads."

Best joke: In a greedy moment Anuff has decided to hold a position overnight. "There are seventeen and a half hours between one day's close and the next day's open, and that is a long, long time to be on your knees, hands clenched tightly, looking up at your twenty-four-foot ceiling, praying that if there is a God, he isn't just."

    1 out of 5 stars Very disapointing.......2001-01-31

The very best part of the book is the excerpt available in the book information section. The balance of the book is quite annoying, explaining over and over his bad experience with his broker firm (E-trade). No insight, no clue, boring until the end. I have read this book in less than 3 hours. I shipped the book back for a full refund.

3 out of 5 stars Use for ideas and inspiration .......2007-03-22

As the book's title suggests this is for Precious Metal Clay only, in some ways this is a draw back for many people who use both Metal Clay's on the market. Sherri Haab clearly says Metal Clay as opposed to Precious Metal Clay or Art Clay Silver in her publications so you know straight away both are covered. The ideas and designs will appeal to those people who like "Bling", no clean clear, minimalist lines here. Certainly not a beginners book, it was in fact used as the "text" book for people who do Level 2 Certification with PMC. Overall, it is nice to have and use as an ideas book for students or reference library. The instructions are fine as long as you know what you are doing, or it could become a little confusing at times. One thing ALL authors/editors need to realise, you are catering to an International Market, therefore do not be so American Centric, i.e. please use both Celcius and Farenheight in publications which will help all those wanting to use your books.

4 out of 5 stars Not for first timers in the PMC BRAND clay!.......2006-04-11

NOT FOR BEGINNERS and for PMC BRAND CLAY!
This is my #1 pet peeves in the metal clay book world. They do not make it clear that this book is for use of their brand name of metal clay. Also that this book is not for beginners. I guess the publisher assumes that because of the use of the terms mixed media in the title people with little or no knowledge of clay/metal art world. Could figure it out.
Yes you can use the other brand of metal clay only if you adjust the temps and shrinkage rates and all the other minor differences.
But thats another story! So getting back to the book at hand, She does cover information about all the types of clay offered by the company she works for and does go into depth on the properties.
Also covering the fundamental techniques. The projects do run the range of items. Not all jewelry from slumped glass to dolls.
The pictures are a little on the small size. But they do show the subject matter and not a excess of the work surface as so many do. They are not number or indicated to the procedures which are numbered.A major flaw for beginners. The material and equipment list for each project is at the start. The real nice touch in this book is the Observations & Alternatives sidebar, which covers safety or substituting items. The gallery pictures are nice and they relate to the chapters. The last chapter is a much to short trouble shooting question and answer section. The section on mixing the gold and silver clay was a nice touch. I own it

          4 out of 5 stars PMC/Mixed Media.......2006-03-15

Great book with lots of examples and how-to information. Helpful for someone with some experience in working with PMC.

3 out of 5 stars More of an idea book.......2005-07-09

As a beginner this book isn't for me. The detailed written instructions become confusing and I wish Mary Ann would have placed step by step picture examples with the project for me to double check myself to see if I'm understanding her concept(s). To me this book is more of a gallery book that has some great photographs and ideas in it. It'll give your creative eye a different perspective in how to mix color with silver, gold and black to make pretty items.

3 out of 5 stars A beginner book or intermediate book?.......2005-06-21

The first chapter gives a good introduction to PMC, tools, a brief overview of techniques, firing and finishing the piece. All essential information for a PMC novice, but if you have any experience with PMC you would already know this information. This is followed by projects with specific instructions. The instructions would be very clear for someone who has experience working with PMC, but I'm not sure how clear they would be to a beginner. Most of the examples of the projects are not very attractive, but the author shows an interesting combo of techniques including fused glass and enamel with PMC. An experienced PMC artist would probably not do the projects as shown, but could get good ideas about incorporating the featured techniques into their own work. There are lots of beautiful photos by various artists for inspiration (without instructions)- and they show the wide variety of looks that can be achieved with PMC. It would have been nice to have fewer specific projects and more information about how and why the different techniques work with PMC.

            Book Description

Need the lowdown of first names? Linda Rosenkrantz and Pamela Redmond Satran, authors of the bestselling Beyond Jennifer Jason, Madison Montana and The Last Word of First Names, draw on years of research and experience to offer important insights like these:Call your daughter Rose, but don't call your son Thorne.Nature names are fashionable now, especially those that haven't been used much in the past. December, in other words is much coolers than April.Although it sounds desert-like, Zahara is actually a Muslim and Swahili name meaning 'flower'. In Hebrew, it denotes brightness.Diego, which is a Spanish form of James, has a lot of verve when combined with either a Latin or Anglo surname.Though it has a hippyish feel, Jupiter has a legitimate history as a first name, used in the country as far back as the eighteenth century--in fact, Jupiter Hammon was the first African-American poet published here.A fresh, illuminating, and indispensable guide to thousands of names--from Aaliyah to Zuri--Baby Names Now will provide the information and inspiration you need to make the prefect choice.

3 out of 5 stars Good concept, but lacking.......2005-07-08

I enjoyed Beyond Jennifer and Jason very much, so you can imagine my excitement at seeing another book by the same authors. I like the basic idea of this book--to inform prospective parents about the associations names have (e.g. Ariel is associated with The Little Mermaid). However, I found that some of these were not included. I looked up a few names to test the book, and the authors are apparently not very knowledgeable about children's popular culture. It was written in 1995 (I don't know if new editions have been written or not), so the authors can be forgiven for not mentioning that among children and those who work with children, the name Patrick is associated with Spongebob Squarepants's pink, dim-witted starfish friend. However, under the name Mario, though many famous people named Mario were listed, there was no mention of Super Mario. Super Mario Bros. is one of the most popular video game series in the world! I realize that the authors probably don't know this because video games are primarily a young people's pastime, but if they had done their research, they would have been able to warn parents that children named Mario (unless they live in Latino communities) are likely to be made fun of for bearing the name of a video game character, instead of just relying on their own knowledge of popular culture. Even if they had done their research, this would still be the kind of book that needs to be constantly updated.
My other complaint is that they encourage parents to give girls masculine names (e.g. Michael--I swear I am not making this up!), but discourage them from giving boys so-called "feminine names" even if many still consider them masculine or ambisexual (e.g. Robin--many people associate the name with Robin Hood or with Batman's sidekick). Don't they realize that this practice only perpetuates the double standard, rather than solving any problems?
I would like it if someone wrote a better version of this book.

            4 out of 5 stars A lot of fun.......2005-05-23

Those who condemn this book for not being a long, boring list of name origins and meanings, or for stating that their name has gone out of style for today's children, are missing the point. "Baby Names Now" is a fun, readable guide to what people are naming their children in the early 2000s, including famous namesakes (saints, popes, presidents, royalty, music and movie stars) and what some celebrities have named their children. It's also fascinating to read how certain names have gone out of style: for example "Lisa," "Amy," "Susan" and "Dawn" were very popular for babies born in the 60s (and thus, my classmates), but are rarely used today.

The book's major flaw is in not recognizing that parents name their children using the last names of people they admire, not just the first names. At one point, it reads "Harrison Ford...is almost certainly the reason for the name Harrison's popularity" - excuse me, ever hear of the Beatles? The entries for the name "Jordan" don't mention Michael Jordan, certainly a major inspiration for that name in this area. The entry for "Jackson" doesn't mention Michael, Janet, or Samuel L. The entry for "Landon" doesn't mention Michael. The entries for "Cassidy" don't mention David and Shaun, so popular in the 70s when many of today's moms were growing up. The entry for "Lucas" - do I have to say it, fellow Star Wars kids grown up and naming their children? And come on, how can you mention the name "Wayne" without acknowledging the popularity of John Wayne?

Still, this is a lot of fun, and I give the authors credit for recognizing that "Althea" is from a Grateful Dead song. I look forward to the next edition.

4 out of 5 stars More fun than the traditional baby name book.......2005-05-17

What I loved about this book was that the authors actually expressed their opinions on the names. Some many others just list the origin and meaning. The authors provide some clever and often witty commentary about each name as well as some fascinating information about how trends in names have changed over time. No, I didn't always agree with their opinions, but reading the book did help me figure out more about the kind of name I was looking for.

1 out of 5 stars Good For Sheep Only.......2004-08-26

I was hoping for a book that would illuminate some choices for baby names, while pointing out any unfortunate associations I had not thought of. Only to receive a book that was short on credible information, and long on personal judgement.

I was truly disappointed in the seemingly arbitrary way in which the authors claimed some names to be outdated. While I understand that Cherry could be a torment to a young girl, lumping Cheri and Cheryl in with these was absolutely silly. Having grown up in the eighties with that name, I was never once called a name referring the former. Asking two friends - a Cheri, (ten years younger than myself) and a Cheryl, (four years older) if they had ever been teased in that way, they both laughed and said no. Many times the author's reasons for dissuading parents from choosing a name seem to be based only on the author's personal preferences and peccadilloes.

I found that many of the names the authors' gave their seal of approval to, were names that were probably most trendy at the moment they were writing. They blithely recommend, good god... California? Not realizing that place names, (like Brooklyn, etc.) are already being ridiculed as tired and silly in magazines. No doubt in a year or two, they'll be recommending Apple and other fruit names, once they too are no longer trendy.

The most unfortunately thing is that the author's emphasis on trendy or common names, may warn parents off of some unique and delightful older names. In the end I could have saved myself the price of the book and done the name research on the internet.

            5 out of 5 stars This One's My Favorite.......2003-11-12

If you're looking for a dictionary of baby names, there are about a zillion other books out there to choose from. But if you've already looked at the typical baby name lists and were left feeling uninspired, check out "Baby Names Now". The authors offer real world wisdom and advice about each name. Each entry is clever and funny. Their descriptions are often completely subjective, but that's what makes this book so much fun. It really gets you thinking about what you do or don't like and why. I recommend it to all expecting mothers and fathers!

1 out of 5 stars Hypocrisy and lies.......2001-02-09

A warning to all interested readers: take this book with a HUGE grain of salt. Gerry Adams helped organise a widespread campaign of bombings, kneecapping, and mass murders as leader of a group of terrorists, before he was justifiably sent to prison. Here, he uses the hardship of prison life in an attempt to arouse sympathy. Are we really supposed to feel sorry for someone responsible for such horrific crimes? The stories of prison torture are rediculous. I don't believe a terrorist, with a hatred of all things British will give a honest account of the UK justice system.

If you want a reason why to support the Irish Republican cause, then pick up this excellent fast paced read. Gerry Adams is a hero to the men, women and children of NI. He knows what the people want, and that is freedom from the rude, ignorant, and selfish English.
