ASIN: 1880510022 |

...and he's forgotten??.......2001-09-22
This was a good book. General MacKenzie WAS the great American Indian/bandit fighter which spawned the myth(?) of the American West in the next century (John Wayne played MacKenzie's role in "Rio Grande"). As for his place in history, he was not shot down in his prime the way the inept Custer was, and as a result, he has all but been forgotten in Western lore (his going mentally insane didn't help matters either).
The book reads easily, flows well and the author doesn't bog you down with unimportant details. I recommend this book to anyone with a mild-to-high curiosity about the Indian Wars and the history of the American Southwest in the late 1800s.
"Bad Hand" Worthy of Remembrance.......2000-04-26
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. Coverage of Ranald Mackenzie is rather sparse and this book does a great job of detailing the man's entire life. Mackenzie was one of the many frontier heros who did not gain the notariety of other Indian fighters, but he was one of the most successful. Mackenzie showed the ability to learn from his mistakes and adapt tactics as necessary. He also served in all the theaters of Indian warfare (Northern Plains, Southern Plains, US/Mexico Border, and Arizona). This book is easy and entertaining to read and will hopefully help us remember an Indian fighter that history has tried to forget.

Book Description
This is a book for anyone who's worried about needing a third glass of wine to fall asleep; anyone who loves TGIF celebrations but hates missing his or her child's Saturday-morning ball game; and anyone who knows he or she won't lose weight unless martinis are given up along with the fettuccine Alfredo. Studies indicate that 10% of Americans--nearly 30 million of us--drink more than we should. Based on 30 years of research, William Miller and Ricardo Muñoz argue that for many people abstinence isn't the only healthy alternative. Controlling Your Drinking shows readers how to become moderate drinkers by making small changes in everyday behavior. After reviewing the research supporting their treatment approach, Miller and Muñoz outline a simple, pragmatic, and adaptable plan for achieving the results you want. Balancing a compassionate, hopeful tone with dry wit, Controlling Your Drinking is an easy-to-follow, science-based approach to moderation that avoids labels and moralizing.

Useful for more than alcohol moderation.......2007-04-28
I read this book as part of my biographical research on a man who was an alcoholic. It opened my eyes to the many aspects of alcohol dependency. Its intelligent, unpatronizing directions on how to reduce the amount you drink or decide for abstinence were thoughtful, and I could see how it would be helpful to those thinking through their relationship with alcohol. I think this book would be useful, too, for impulse eating and similar situations. I recommend this book highly.

Essential guide for creating and using your own vinegars........2004-12-28
As an avid chef, herb gardener and creator of decorative oil and vinegar bottles, I am always searching for a recipes to create my own vinegar infusions. When I came across this book I knew I had found the source I was looking for. The author covers all bases from how to make your own infusions to what to do with them once you have created them. He divides the book into different types of vinegars like fruit, classic, savory, herbal and balsamic, the latter of which no one can make since only true balsamic comes from Modena,Italy, but its inclusion is necessary and his recipe for roasted polenta with mushrooms and balsamic sauce is well worth the price of the book. There is also some fun facts and history. If you are looking for ideas of what to do with all that overgrown tarragon and rosemary in your garden, this book is for you.

Customer Reviews:
Great Knitting Instructions.......2007-08-26
One of the best books for basic women's sweater patterns ever. I've made three of the patterns thus far and found the sizing is true, the instructions accurate and easy to understand. I've been knitting for over 40 yrs and I learned some good, new techniques. I wish Ms. Marquart would publish a pattern book for men and/or children also.
Emininently wearable & knittable sweaters!.......2007-06-22
The author has indeed achieved her goal of "easy to knit, easy to wear" as stated in this book's subtitle. Her idea for these sweaters would be ones that could be worked somewhat mindlessly in times of stress, and don't we all have periods like that, when we don't want to be doing a complicated fair isle, lace or cable pattern or a close-fitting sweater with equally close attention needed for body shaping.
But even though these sweaters are simple, they are all attractive and ones that I would wear. This is somewhat unusual, generally there are always a few designs in a collection that scream who could/would wear this! Also the author has a knack for making good yarn choices for each of the stitch patterns. For example, hand-painted and variegated yarns are done in some variation of garter rib, or in one case, a basket weave which helps to counter the pooling or stacking of colors. In contrast, a couple tweed yarns are done just in plain stockinette, the better to see the beautiful nubs.
The photography as usual with Martingale books is high quality and excellent, with some close-ups of stitch patterns, that make you want to get out your knitting needles and search your stash for a sweater candidate.
I'm giving the book 4 stars instead of the highest rating because all the sleeves styles are simple drop shoulder, which makes them not look as fashionable as they could be. But this is a minor point, given the ease of adapting this to one's own favorite armhole shaping, and the overall good taste that these sweaters show.
Love it!! What about those 4 stitches?!.......2007-05-19
I love this book! As a fairly new knitter, I like the simple designs. However, I'm making my first project from this book, and found what I believe is a mistake. In the garter stitch side-to-side solid jacket, when dividing each side for front and back, it says to place 4 sts on a holder, then place the rest on another holder. It never does say what to do with those 4 stitches. If anyone knows, please do tell!! (BTW, I did check extensively on the pattern corrections page of the publisher, to no avail.)
The same sweater repeated throughout with slight variations.......2006-10-11
I'm so disappointed by this book. No imagination!!! Every single sweater has a round neckline whether for the pullovers or for the two plain cardigans. Not a single v-neck, shawl collar, or square neckline at all. The shapes of every single sweater appears to be the same - square and boxy. All have the same plain, straight sleeve. The differences are in the yarn and nearly half are a rib stitch. The others are basic stockinette. If I could be so bold... please save your money and go to an on-line free pattern website for much cuter and infinitely more creative designs with instructions that are equally as clear. I give two stars because the basic shape is ok despite the fact that it is used throughout the book.
Don't hesitate to purchase this one - a classic that will be used by knitters at any level!.......2006-04-23
I didn't plan on reviewing another book, but when I saw this book I knew I had to purchase this one. This is one book that any knitter will use over and over again regardless of his/her knitting level. Don't hesitate to purchase this one!
The author accomplishes exactly what she claims - classic patterns that are easy to knit, are classic in style, and something you would use over and over again, especially when you need a sweater in a particular color.
Just about everything in the book is done just right - lucid instructions, close-up details of neck and sleeves. Also the sweaters are well tailored. She does not neglect the dressmaking details on the sleeve or necklines; they are not only nicely done, but she includes suggestions to ensure the necklines lie smoothly. I have seen patterns by well-known designers where those details are sloppy. If you are an advanced knitter and prefer adjustments for set in sleeves instead of the drop-sleeves, do short-row shoulder sloping, or make shorter sleeves for summer tops, these patterns can easily be adjusted. The designs also allow for easy substitution on of other favorites yarns. I confess to a personal bias that stitch charts should always be included in sweater patterns but for this collection, it really isn't needed.
I realized that I need a sweater in a wine color to go with several of my skirts and could not find one in the store. I purchased an alpaca worsted weight yarn, and I can quickly make one of those sweaters to round out my wardrobe. My problem is deciding which one to choose.
I hope that this writer will make the time to publish more of her designs. This is one classic book worth owning by knitters of any level!

Book Description
This book beautifully features numerous examples of what is the most common single trait of British gardens, the heraceous and latterly, the mixed, border. The examples chosen to illustrate in this captivating book, the evolution in garden taste from the 16th century to the late 20th century.
Customer Reviews:
Book is a Winner.......2007-05-22
I first viewed this book at my local library and after going over it, decided to purchase it for my own personal library. The book covers a wide expanse of gardens in Britain, Ireland and not mentioned in the title, Scotland. Book does not give in depth information about layouts of gardens and such, but does contain one or two pics of mentioned gardens and locations in write ups. The photographs are simply beautiful.
The gardens in England are broken down into sectors, such as south-east England or North England for those who may be going to visit. Often, they contain pictures of the manor houses, cottages, castles or architectural elements in the gardens. The book also includes antedotal information about past occupants of houses, gardens or historical events surrounding the houses and gardens. For me, that added immensely to the overall enjoyment of the book. It's a winner.
Very enjoyable.......2006-05-05
This large and attractive book is a reference book on over 1,700 of the most beautiful gardens in the British Isles. The largest part of the book is the Guide, in which public-available gardens are discussed, complete with colorful pictures. Grouped by region, each of the gardens is given a quick introduction, a more in-depth description, and important information, including location, size and when open. After the Guide comes the Gazetteer, in which the author looks at many different gardens, including some still privately held and those belonging to cemeteries and hospitals.
Overall, I found this to be a very enjoyable book. I really liked reading the descriptions of the gardens, and the interesting historical notes. The one thing that would have made this book better would have been more pictures. But, it is already a pretty hefty book, and I do realize that adding more pictures would have made it huge.
But, that said this is a very interesting book, especially for anyone who plans on being able to visit these wonderful gardens themselves.

An entertaining schedule.......2005-09-17
How can you not love Mary Engelbreit?? She captures the essence of daily life with a big grin, making looking at all those appointments and hectic family schedule much more manageable. The ample space in each day allows for several appts. and is big enough for everyone to see it!!
Disappointing new format.......2005-07-15
I have ordered the Life Is Just So Daily calendars for years. It has always been so convenient to glance down the column of each family member and see what the week holds. This calendar mentions "a whole new look," which "has made it even easier for families to keep track of their busy schedules." I disagree. The family members' names are now along the side, causing the user to have to write them in several times on each month's page. This is inconvenient and harder to understand at-a-glance. Luckily, I looked at the picture closely before I opened it. I will be returning this calendar and ordering the "Make a Note Family Planner Wall Calendar." I will miss my year of M.E. illustrations, but the format just doesn't work.

Customer Reviews:
Quick and Healthy Meals.......2007-10-18
The recipes are mostly quick to whip up and enjoyed the outcome. Great for those who prefers to eat at home to control the salt, oil, etc in their food.
Delicious, realistic food that even my toddler enjoys.......2007-10-09
The first 97 pages of this book are devoted to outlining the Eating Well diet and lifestyle plan. Following that is 150 recipes divided into sections such as breakfast, salads, soups, poultry, snacks, etc.
In addition to the nutritional information that one would expect to find, each recipe has an icon at the bottom that indicates if the dish is low carb, low cal, or high in fiber. I've made 9 of the recipes in this book so far and each one of them has surpassed my expectations! In fact, the Chicken with creamy chive sauce has become a regular feature on our weekly menu.
Bottom line: the recipes are well written, easy to follow, contain common ingredients, and result in food that tastes good and is good for you.
Fantastic.......2007-08-28
I am a personal trainer and bought this book as a tool to use not only for myself but with my clients as well. I will suggest to all my clients to purchase this book. I never suggest trying any fad diets but to lose weight through lifestyle changes and this book gives you all the tools to do so. It is easy to read and understand. The tips it gives you are simple and can easily be used to start improving your life and to lose weight. The recipes are great as well and I love that they factor in the calories for you as well as nutritional information. Whether you are just getting started with a weight loss program or just need some new recipes and ideas I highly recommend purchasing this book. In addition I must also say that not only is the information great but the layout and quality of the book itself is wonderful.
Good cookbook even if you aren't dieting.......2007-08-17
Every recipe we've tried from this cookbook has been excellent. They are easy to understand and follow so if you're cooking skills aren't the greatest you won't have a problem. Even if you aren't dieting this cookbook is worth having in your library.
The diet information in the front is very helpful and well written.
We've been a subscriber to the magazine, Eating Well, for 2 years now and highly reccomend it as well.
Fantastic weight loss advice; good food.......2007-08-12
The EatingWell Diet: 7 Steps to a Healthy, Trimmer You is not a book for those who aren't yet ready to make a serious commitment to losing weight. This isn't a book full of empty cheerleading and excited promises. As such, many people who want to lose weight won't be able to make full use of its suggestions. Those who are ready to make the serious commitment needed, however, may find this book to offer one of the more promising roads to healthy, long-term weight loss, and even those who aren't will find useful suggestions to get them started and improve their diet.
Dr. Jean Harvey-Berino is the Professor and Chair of the department of nutrition and food science at the University of Vermont, and she developed the "VTrim Weight Management Program" upon which this book is based. Her background as a researcher shows--you'll learn plenty in the pages of this book about what long-term studies have shown to be truly effective when it comes to health, nutrition, and long-term weight management. It's a very readable book, however, with fascinating tidbits of information and nifty quotes.
The EatingWell Diet doesn't just try to walk you through losing weight. Despite the name of the book, the nutritionist who came up with the program firmly believes that it isn't about `dieting'--it's about adopting a healthy lifestyle. As such, there are plenty of tips for facing and handling everyday temptations and slip-ups. There's also an entire chapter on maintaining your weight loss once you've lost it, and that's after it delves into tracking weight, calories, and exercise.
More than half of this book is actually a set of calorie-calculated menus and accompanying recipes. Some of the recipes are full-sized recipes, while some are quick little things often listed 5 or so to a page. The full-sized recipes I tended to enjoy, such as a "loaded spinach salad" with egg, carrot, toasted nuts, and blue cheese dressing in it. However, I was disappointed with all of the little mini-recipes I tried. Each one seemed to start with a basically good idea, such as sweet potato oven fries, or brown rice with Asian flavors, but they all came out tasting very bland and uninteresting. Diet food just doesn't have to be bland, and it's my own opinion that the fact that so much of it is designed this way is what makes folks think diet food is torture.
Mind you, I'm aware that there are plenty of people who like bland food, so you folks can ignore that particular complaint of mine and consider that you will likely enjoy the cookbook side of this book more than I did.
All in all, I think this is a solidly practical guide to achieving and maintaining a healthy weight. Just be mindful that there are no easy answers, there's a lot of hard work involved here, and you're going to need a serious commitment to your health to make full use of this book.

This book maps Joyce's vision of his beloved Dublin, and encourages readers to overcome their doubts about the 'Irish Sphinx'.

pretty good intro to joyce for the money.......2004-04-20
it won't pass you in a high level college course but it's got lots of info- a great intro and primer i'd have to say!
Should be read BEFORE reading any of Joyce's works..........1998-08-27
This is an excellent introduction to the life and writings of James Joyce, the former being essential to understanding the later, on any level. Mr. Norris's text and Mr. Clint's illustrations (which are actually rather functional) bring a sense of insight to any who attempt to take on one of the most complex writers in Western literature. The outline of "Ulysses" is excellent, and Mr. Norris even takes on the daunting task of begining to explain what has to be one of the most utterly demanding books ever, "Finnegan's Wake," and illustrates, literally, that it is not just some great joke or jibberish as others who probably have tried and failed to interpet, claim it is. And the keen advice from Mr. Norris, although rather pedestrian, disproves the popular notion of Joyce being unreadable. I would strongly recommend this and any of the other editions in this excellent series (I have since purchased, "Introducing Kafka.")
Excellent insight and introduction into Joyce's work........1998-07-26
Introducing Joyce really gives the reader insight into Joyce's methods of writing, how much of his work was autobiographical, and helps one better grasp this great writer's unique style. I was also amused with the interesting illustrations throughout the book. These illustrations make it impossible for the reading to become at all monotonous. One learns many things that are incorporated into his work that you would never know without reading this book. Overall, an excellent way to prepare for the experience of Joyce's writing.

Excellent introduction to the benefits and pitfalls of FLP's.......1999-06-24
This is an excellent introduction to the benefits of starting a family limited partnership. The book also discusses potential pitfalls that can occur if an FLP is not set up correctly. It is well written and easy to read. The appendix includes a list of lawyers who can provide local expertise in major cities across the US. I have recommended the book to friends.
Too broad of an overview.......1999-05-14
I found this book a waste of time and money. It does not cover how to setup a Family Limited Partnership. It goes on to tell short stories about people/situations that have used Family Limited partnerships.
